0:48 Up the series, Well, good evening. Troki's in Trek is a while, mc globe. It's Thursday, June fourth, twenty twenty six. Welcome to episode six and eighty eight of TROC Talking and Beyond. I'm your most excellent host, Uncle Jim, And before we get too far, I want to go around and introduce my awesome, my incredible trucks. First, We're going to start off with Eric. Eric's out in Portland. Are you doing tonight, Eric.
1:46 I'm doing pretty pretty good. Yeah. Once I got my laptop working tonight, things started looking up. I'm very much looking forward to doing a Star Trek themed bike ride tonight in Portland, because in Portland there's a ride for everything. I'm going to go tonight and hang out with a bunch of other nerds and advertise a podcast. I got all kinds of business cards and my spokes. It's gonna be great. Well, this this is not the naked one. This is a different one. We were talking about this. That is correct. Yeah, I mean there is there is a naked bike right in Portland. This is not part of that. That does not mean that on occasion a naked person might not show up to a non naked ride. You just never know. Well, yeah, yeah, I get that. And we also out in Portland, we have our very old toy guide Paul.
2:32 How you doing to Paul, I'm doing well. I'm doing well. As as Eric so adroitly puts it, you know, here in Oregon Portland, we're very comfortable with three things, beer and our bicycles. So basically, you know, that's kind of where. We're at so excellently. We're very well attuned for you can basically, you know, put us in any century and we're good. Well, let's hang out in Portland and let's go on very old miracle worker, David, how you doing tonight. David, we should all just visit Portland. That's just the bottom line. We should move the podcast to Portland. That's where we That's where it should be. And let's swing out to Las Vegas and say hello to Charles. How you doing tonight, Charles.
3:26 I'm doing all right. After a little bit of shaking today, it's things have calmed down. I can talk to Star Wars with the helicopter passing overhead. We're definitely going to do that. And last, but not least, we're going to go to Virginia. We're going to say hello to v How you doing tonight? V doing all right? And as I had mentioned earlier on the DM or whatever, I used to live in or outside of Portland years ago, nineteen ninety eight to two thousand and one. So we lived outside of Portland in Forrest, grow, lovely little town.
4:07 Did they have a naked blacke ride there too? Not that I know of, Okay, not. That I know of, But that was where when my. Youngest kid was born at the hospital there in September of ninety eight, And when I got out of the hospital, I forgot where it was, but there was this is Star Wars theme to promise Mark Hamill was making an appearance somewhere, and we could have gone to meet Mark Hamill, me with a newborn baby in my hands, you know. But no, my husband had to take us to his lame o family labor day picnics.
4:49 No comparison there at all. You got to go from Mark Hamel. I absolutely labor day. That would have been probably labor days in the fall, so that probably would have been Roast City. Yeah, I don't know. It wasn't well, I thought it was. It was something different. It wasn't a con. No, No, it wasn't. It wasn't a con because it was something. Yeah, it was something because we didn't dress up and I just had a kid and I had a c section and my guts were stable together and all that. So it was some something else. Whoa, whoa, Okay, that's a lot of moving into Uncle Jim territory. Here. We're very comfortable with our bodies here, beer and we're riding.
5:31 Yeah. What year was this? What was year? Was this? The nineteen ninety eight? Okay, I'll help you out. The show was soaing you never know what we're going to do. Amazing, But I was just I was. I still haven't. I was so mad that I had to go to the lame O family picnic because I didn't even like his family, and I would have rather much, much much rather Mark Hamill, because you know, let's. See if we can get him on the podcast. So wow, that would be absolutely I would. I would absolutely, yeah, because I had such a crush on him, him and Harrison Ford so much so that actually my another Star Wars related my son, who was born in September of ninety eight. His middle name is Harrison for Harrison Ford.
6:27 So there you go, Hunter Harrison. My dog's name is Leah, who's right here at I know, and my Anakin, who yep, hopefully doesn't come in here because then Anakin and Leah will start there. Sis. But we're getting we're getting on the track before we get too far. Finally, after after rescheduling, Cecilia Lee is going to be with us from Starfleet Academy. She'll be with us next week. She played the romulent Zolo there on the screen and Starfleet Academy. She was in the War Academy actually, and she'll be with us next week. 13:12 Let's head back over to Europe to a beautiful French France, to Chemi Duchat, who doesn't say where in France they live, but they're a top fans so they can live wherever they want. Basically, you can just choose any house you want in France and if you have a hello, I'm a top fan of the Trek Talking and beyond, and they will just let you live there. So that's really all that's necessary. Right, kindy set me straight. That's what I've always heard, so and just up the road in near Harvard in Germany. It's is also another enthusiastic fan letting us know is a reminder that enthusiasm for Star Trek and all of these other franchises is in total something that we as a citizens of the planet share together.
13:58 So it's not any kind of a one countrict con climb ownership of it. It's nothing that stuff. We're one big global family and we all enjoyed the same entertainment, which is just phenomenal to be reminded of on a weekly basis, Isn't that right? Uncle Jimmy, I couldn't have said it better than myself, Paul. Now, we're going to have some fun on our Facebook page. I like to put poles up there to see what you guys are fans have to say, kind of put our fingers on the pulse of fandom. Well, there was this movie that came out a couple of weeks ago called Mandalorian and Grogu and I put a poll up on our podcast on our Facebook page.
15:47 But before we get to that, David Roll the team. You know me like no Wind, what you thought about the show when we try to share your opinions with all of our minions out there because they listen world wide. So tell us just what you think. Get together, we will all dream, Canara and Robulin a. Uh. You know, guys, I'm gonna tell you I say it every week. I'm gonna say it again. The subscription, the ninety nine cents a month is worth it just to see that video. Okay, I'm not turing my own horn here, but David put together a killer video. Eric did an awesome song, and you guys are missing fifty percent of the enjoyment if you're only listening. So that's all I got to say, all right, Eric, So what was our poll question this week?
16:55 Well, the pole question was, of course, what did you think of the movie? And what would you say? Score it one to ten with ten being the best, and of course we threw in a this is the way Todd Pletz said, I'd give it an eight out of ten. Nothing groundbreaking, but it was still fun and enjoyable. It was like a whole short season of Disney Plus Show condensed into a movie of the Disney plus show condensed into a movie. I would agree, Todd. Thanks. David Hegney Junior said The Man, Laurian and Grogu is a good movie. I give it a seven. I have spoken. Milan Vorsak said very nice, no complaints, good entertainment. Ten.
17:36 Top fan Michael T. Piquette said I liked it seven. Rissy Oranglova said I like it a lot. It's not the original story, but it is good. Ten. It's not that original. I think they they're trying to say, it's not that original of a story, but it's good. They gave it a ten. Dan Lecky said a solid seven out of ten. A fun time watching it on the big screen with a little popcorn bucket. Thanks Dan. Steve Turners said five. First half was good, second half just one fight after another. There was no development of the mythology for either Mando or Grogu. Thank you, Steve. Paul Bev said I thought it was fantastic. Go in there and enjoy it for what it is, a good old fashioned popcorn flick. Something this world needs more of.
18:25 A seven. And finally, David E. Reese the Second gave it an eight point five for a combined fan score. This week for the movie of seven point seven. Very respectable, very much so. So now we're going to turn it over to Paul. Paul can give us this quick recap and run down, and then we're going to die right in and talk about the movie ourselves. Take it away, Paul. Hey, what a surprise. I love I'm so prepared. So anyhow, friends, Mandalorian Grogu. It's been six and a half years since we've had any kind of Star Wars theatrically in exhibition. Last time was the Rise of Skywalker that kind of closed out the sequel trilogy, and we haven't really been back to the movies with Star Wars since. And in terms of first this is the first time really that we've ever had a TV show that's been Star Wars that's tried to make the jump over to the theatrical release. So this has never really been done before for Star Wars.
19:29 Other shows certainly have done it. I mean, look at Star Trek, right, but this is the first outing for Star Wars. There's a lot riding on it. I think the box office is probably going to be scrutinized a lot more than the picture itself, which is a shame. But anyhow, I've gone ahead and seen the movie twice. At this point I felt like I really needed to get a second viewing under my belt to really get a good take on it. The gist basically is this This movie was designed so just in case you've never seen any of the previous three seasons of The Mandalorian on Disney Plus, you won't be lost. You can go in there and you can follow what's happening, grasp the concept, follow along, and have a good time, even if you don't have the slightest idea who Grogu and Dinjarn are right. So, I mean, I think it's kind of the business decision that they chose to go with, right, Let's make this as accessible as possible for people. But they also want to try to bring along the regular fans who are enthusiastic and who have enjoyed the show and give them something that they're used to. And you definitely get what you're used to. It's established at the beginning that are Pal Dinjarn is a Mandalorian bounty hunter and he is tasked with He's got a young apprentice, the Grogu, who's from the same species as Master Yoda, that we all know, and their job basically is to go through the galaxy and help out the New Republic. So the New Republic,
20:59 for those folks don't know, is basically they're like the next iteration of the Rebel Alliance once the Empire had been defeated, rejourn of the Jedi type situation. Right, we're kind of rebuilding things again, and so the idea is, let's go back to being a republic. And so the New Republic is that kind of post rebellion group of freedom fighters who are trying to restore order to the galaxy. And we've seen that all throughout on the Mandalorian, so we're familiar with that on the show. And so as things start off, if you told me that I was going to see Sigourney Weaver in a Star Wars movie a couple of years ago, I would have just been but my mind would have been boggled. But there she is as a general in charge of a base that a mandorin reports do, and she's giving him an assignment she needs, is asking him to You've got a World War two style deck of bounty of cards of all the people that are the top targets that are in the Empire is not just rolling over playing dead. No, the Empire is like trying to reform itself and there's all these warlords out there that are trying to re establish things. And that is the opening sequence of this movie.
22:08 Very much like a James Bond movie. We have this big exciting opening sequence of Mando and Grogu trying to track down this imperial warlord on a very icy planet reminiscent of hot It's got walkers and all this stuff like that, and basically taking out the warlord. Very exciting, a lot of chase, a lot of exciting stunts and what have you. So really movie starts off with a hell of an action sequence, really great before the titles even come up. It's really really great. So as the plot goes on, basically he's Mando is supposed to get tasked with each new assignment from Sigourny Weaver right, and she says, I want you to go talk to the Hats, which is a pair of relations of Jaba the Huts, who of course died in Return of the Jedi, and they're gangsters. The Huts are right, And a lot of these movies like a gangster movie in a lot of different ways. Right, So the Huts promise that they're going to give Mando information about where other Imperial warlords are hiding out, but they need a favor. They want their nephew, Rada the Hut, right, who we saw as a little tiny huttling way back on the Clone Wars car zone right in the early season there. Rada they say, is missing, right or being held prisoner, and they want Manda to go free, and if he's willing to do that, then maybe they'll talk turkey about where these other Imperial warlords are hadding out. So that begins. The actual mission of the movie is Mando heads off to this planet to
23:39 go check out what's going on with Rada the Hut, who supposedly is a you know, a terrible circumstances in a prison or being held a captive against his well. And then he gets information from a street vendor who's voice mine, No, No, the Martin Scorsese. So they just blowing my mind, who's in this movie. It's just crazy, And we end up finding out that Rata it doesn't seem to be being held against his will at all. He's been jacked up on like Hut steroids, right, and he's kind of running the tables in this big pit fighting deal. He's like a giant pit bull, if you will, fighting all these different characters and he's like a gladiator. It doesn't seem to need rescuing from Mando or anybody else.
24:23 And the story proceeds from there throughout with surprises and plot twists and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of action and fighting. And that's basically all you need to know to talk about the movie, I would say, and there we have it. So that's what I can weigh in with the score later on. I don't know, want to tilt the plane. I don't want to tilt the Jajark pit too far in one direction to the other. So we'll just I can pop back later and give you my score. But definitely fun time at the movies and do a lot more to say about it, but I'll hold off for now. All right, Well, David, being the youngest, will you know what you want to start out with? The Mandalorian and Grogu.
25:09 Uh? Yeah, sure. So this is the Mandalorian who apparently adopted baby Yoda or in this case. And Uh, this is a from what I. Understand, is a uh continuation from the TV series. Uh. And we don't know if they're going to be making any more TV sharing, but I think that's kind of in the air, I suppose. But oh well, I mean to be honest, this show was actually surprisingly good. I actually really enjoyed it. H Yoda or Grogu, I keep calling Yoda, but Grogu. Apparently it's just like, you know, being cute throughout the entire show, and I actually enjoyed that.
26:01 It actually kind of brought a good balance to the show. And one of my favorite changes is where you know, after the whole at At battle was going on, you see baby Yoda like tapping rapidly on his helmet trying to get his attention to get out of there before the bomb discluded and stuff. And so you know, there was a lot of fun stuff elements to this show that brought everybody together. I think just to watch a Star Wars movie that needed to be on the screen for so so long. In my opinion, I think Star Wars does really well when it comes to a movie and it brings together the elements of what they're trying to tell. I enjoyed this one so much that I actually didn't think I would actually have such fun time at the theater like I had all those other times with other movie because other movie back in the day, you know, just not Star Wars related recurse, but just they I didn't really find so much enjoyment with those.
27:09 But then when Star Wars came along, it was just like, Wow, that actually was quite entertaining. I really enjoyed it. I think this particular movie has some pitfalls, suh, But I mean honestly, I mean, like right there, you know, it's actually really fun to go see a movie with friends, so it made it much more enjoyable. But to me, I actually think this movie could actually have a second movie, to be honest, and I think it did. It did that well. And the fact that, you know, they brought in nostalgia from the original movies, and I think they did a really good job putting it all together. So honestly, I'm gonna give this I'm gonna have to score it a nine. So to me, I really enjoyed it that much.
28:02 Wow, Eric, Now are you going to offset Paul's gonna off? It's not You're gonna give it a one? I need to know. No. So yeah, so at least as of the time that I look this morning. Uh, the tomato ometer on this one was down to sixty two percent, but the popcorn meter was eighty eight percent, which I still think is pretty good. Listen, when when I think of transformation of television show to movie, the first thing I think of is Star Trek, and I think of kind of the grand scale of the Star Trek movies, you know, Insurrection aside, uh and maybe in some ways Nemesis aside, but like many of them have this kind of grand scale to them.
28:47 So that was kind of the the sort of expectation that I came in with. I knew there wasn't going to be a Dusk Star, but I thought that there that there could be higher stakes. What I liked was that, although I was disappointed on that because the story doesn't really go there, and in fact, I think a couple of our responders made a good point that, you know, there's not a lot of character development here. You don't learn really anything new about Mando or about Grogu. I do think that it helps to have seen the show, because we the people who have seen the show, have an automatic emotional connection with din Jarren, despite the fact that we don't we also have a connection with Grogu, but this movie automatically puts the Grogu connection in right.
29:31 He's just so darn cute the whole time. Those little alien characters that he hangs out with, who are even smaller than him, crack me up and just lend a lot of like comedic relief throughout the movie. So plot wise, like it's a quest movie, right, You're going out and you're completing tasks. It's like D and D. You complete this task, you beat this monster, you do this boss whatever, and that's how you move through the movie. So as long as you're cool with that, which I was, I really enjoyed this movie so positives. The puppetry of Grogu was of course amazing. I mean, he's They just really embraced the whole puppet thing. There's some stop motion animation in other parts of this movie that's really good, but the puppetry is just fantastic. I loved it. I loved him always hanging out on Mando's shoulder. It's you know, pretty straightforward, lots and lots of action. I guess what I noticed is like, I'm always comparing this against the original Star Wars, right, and I feel like the original Star Wars has this kind of like shallow arc to its action, whereas most twenty first century movies, and I feel like this one does the same thing. It's like up and down much bigger. So the action is really intense and really loud and really fast, and then there are these like sweet little moments that bring it all the way down and completely are action free. I don't know, it just felt this is this is how movies are.
30:58 It's I'm not complaining about it. I'm just saying that this is a difference in the way that movies I think are made now versus the way that they used to be made in the past. And of course the production quality is fantastic, you know. I think they use the camera what they call it, but like the big wall screen thing a bunch to make cool environments and things. But it basically is kind of yeah, a long or a shortened season. It feels like they they told the whole story of a season just in a couple of hours. My favorite character I just wanted to mention was absolutely raw the Hut. I mean, the first time that he pops out and he's totally built, and he's got like all these muscles and stuff.
31:40 I just like, whoa, and then like he's got really he's this big slug, right, So his fighting techniques used the slug body in really cool ways. So I just I thoroughly enjoyed that character. I love that he's breaking the dad's mold. I love that he's fighting against his family and what they want him to be. It's a that I think Paul said it's very much a mob movie. It feels very much like that, right, somebody's trying it every dime they try to get out. They pulled me back in, but of course he is able to break away in the movie. So I love this movie. I think we are always left with questions like, you know, why doesn't the Mandalorian just like join the New Republic. Why does he have to feel this need to like work for them but be independent? But really he's just like part of the I don't know that that whole thing. I guess it's a Mandalorian thing. I wouldn't understand. Yeah, I think that's pretty much what I wanted to say. I'd completely agree. Never thought i'd see Sigourney Weaver in one of these movies, but here she was.
32:44 I didn't think that her performance in particular was like was like a mate like she She was a great character and she was fine, but she also was a little flat. I thought in her performance. That was just my take on her character. But loved it overall. I'm gonna give this movie a solid seven and I will absolutely watch it again in the future. Excellent, excellent. How about you, Vi, what did you think about Minalin and grow Goo? Well, I was just thinking, you know, if you told fourteen year old me who saw the first Star Wars movie way back when, that I would be here all these years later reviewing this, I'd say, yeah, no way, because I was a skinny, shy, nerdly nerdy, you know, friendless kid. So that's that's just blows my mind that this is this is still part of my life now.
33:38 So as somebody, I meant to catch up with the Mandalorian on Disney, but it just didn't happen. So but I did. I was able to get pulled into this movie right away. It was definitely very gripping. It got me interested in it. You know, it's usually something that you know if I don't have the interest in it, then I'll just get you know, like when is this going to be over? But I didn't feel like that once throughout the whole movie. And can we say Pedro Pascal Yum, he is he's got.
34:20 You hardly see him, you see, but but his voice definitely he's got. I don't understand how he looks so good with a mustache. Usually mustaches are kind of creepy. But I. Don't know, I don't know. And and somebody what was it there? They somebody online was making a comment about him. It's like they were like commenting on how he always manages to look rather not scruffy, but he looks a little bit rumpled in all his interviews. But it's like I don't care. I'll still I mean, he still is. Just absolutely I don't know, I just I just really need to see more of him. And of course Grogu because I mean just absolutely stinking cute and the comic relief that we had throughout the movie with him, and then the little this little Guy's the little Engineers and Zellen's Oh my gosh, there, how can you not love when they say no squeezy and bad baby horrible baby.
35:23 When he's trying. He just wants to make friends, and Mando is saying, he's just he's young, he doesn't know any better. So but then he grows too. I know somebody said there wasn't much development, but he's learning how to use his powers, because he was able to get some things done there with using the force or whatever. But what what Eric said. I liked Rata because first off, who would expect to see you know, some jacked looking hut you know. Slug guy. But you wind up feeling sorry for him because he was just saying that, you know, he had to he didn't want to be like his dad, and so he was just trying to rise above his his family, which I think a lot of people can understand. That. Then extremely satisfying, of course, especially this day and age, to see the bad guys getting wiped out, you know, as uh like we're saying sort of like you know, mob bosses, and you know, just something very extremely satisfying. And of course having a mob type movie and having Martin.
36:40 Scorsese voice the uh that. Cafe owner that was just absolutely you know, chef's kiss. But I would definitely see this again. I need to. Find a little bitty grogu and Anzellen, you know, figure set like Paul did. But I would give it. I think I would give. It a eight point five. How about that? Yeah, Fell a little bit this. Yeah, Fells joined it to me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so at eight point five. Ye.
37:21 I enjoyed it. The opening scene, guys, oh my god. I ended up seeing it in three D imax. So the Walker sequence at the beginning was just, oh my god, mind bottle. It just blew you right out of the theater. And I'm sitting there watching this, and I kept thinking about Luke Skywalker and Hop and the Empire Strake Spat because in that movie, the Walkers were very slow, very humbersome, you know. But in this movie, oh my god, these things were. They were huge, and they were asky. They could swivel, they could do all kinds of things that that they didn't do in the Empire Strikes Back, but incredible.
38:05 We got to see inside of one, which was just wow, awesome, awesome, awesome, And I thought it was great that we got to see snow Troopers without their bottom mask. I don't know what to call it, but you know that they have a breather underneath that mask, and I thought that was cool that we got to see that. When the Willard goes to escape from the Walker and he gets in what looks like the head of a walker, it's actually an old toy that they made. It was an Imperial Interceptor toy from way way way back in the day.
38:48 And obviously the people that made this movie are well into their Star Wars stuff to put that toy in the movie. I just thought that was so neat so on that yeah, seeing snow Troopers, Stormtroopers everything else, it was just like, wow, awesome. I don't know if anybody else noticed this, but when so the Mindalorean is battling with Rod of the Hut, did anybody else notice the creatures they were battling Yep? I forgot to mention that, Yep, that's. The chesst from Star Wars. And even when they pull up overhead, it's actually the chest board that they're playing on.
39:32 And I just thought that was the coolest thing that they actually made those little, those holographic entities real in the movie. I thought that was great. I loved it. Didn't really I mean, it didn't affect the movie, but if you knew it, it was just a cool little little thing. And of course Paul mentioned Sigourney Weaver. Of course we see zed from making his second appearance in a live action movie. I loved it. I had I saw it twice like Paul did. It was a lot of fun. I enjoyed every single minute of it. I thought it was great when Baby Yoda, I apologize ro Goo uh was was trying to heal the Mando and he builds them a little hot. He's trying to use the force to push him in and this fa stick out at the end. I just I thought it was great.
40:27 It's a good This is a great seeing battle droids again. I thought that was cool because they seemed to leave them out of every Star Wars movie. But here, yeah, they're back. We see them, which was a great nod. I believe the hot twins we saw already in Boba Fet. Did we not see them in Boba Fet? I think this is their second appearance I remember correctly, Yeah, is where we first saw them. You guys can correct me. But was not? Was this not a Star Trek five homage?
41:08 Was that not Shakyrie? The planet they went to? Well, I think you know you're gonna see what you want to see, Uncle Jim, like you always. I mean, it's you know, they're not pronounced the same, and I don't even think they're spelled the same. But you know, if you want to smush your vowels together and go okay, just makes you happy. When I just thought it was I thought this was Shakyrie, and I thought, wow. I thought the same thing. I thought the same thing, and I yeah. Wow, Sparks movie ever made, that's even better yet. But at any rate, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it to anybody that's uh, you know, go and see this movie. Don't listen to the n ears. Get a popcorn, get your this is the Way popcorn tin which I have, and sit down, have some popcorn, and enjoy this movie for what it is. And that's just fun, you know, be a kid for a little while and have some fun. And that's that's that's it. I did think there was one part that I thought was strange, and maybe someone can explain it to me. When the huts took his helmet away and threw him in the pit with the poison snake thing there, Why did they give him the helmet? Bat? I I saw it twice and I still didn't get why why they bother to take it off. Well, I know why they took it off, because they wanted us to have Pedro's face on the screen.
42:34 That's the reason they took it off. But why did they give it back to him after making a big thing about the value of this helmet? I didn't catch that. I think they gave it back mainly because they were impressed with his skills at surviving down there. I guess one of the huts says, because you have entertained us reward, right, So it's basically it's but it's it's contrived, right, It's really contrived just lose his helmet because he's not supposed to be without it. So yeah, it's it's a it's a stretch, I would say. But the home world there, uh, not shakyrie whatever it was really called. Seeing all the huts writhing around in the chambers and you know all that other stuff was awesome and I loved it. So I think I'm gonna be right there with the I'm gonna go with an eight point five on this one. Go see it please, it's don't don't cut yourself short, go and see this movie.
43:32 How about you, childs. Okay, first of all, I'm gonna say Pedro Pascal David slide show. I got second reason I like him. You're for those that actually get to see the video. In the background, here is pictures of Pedro Pascal actually at Disneyland promoting the movie and the new Smugglers Run ride. And he's actually in there in Mandalorian costume. Oh wow. And yeah, he's actually in there. You'll at David start flipping.
44:15 You'll see pictures of him. He's actually in uniform and there with the fans. The fans. I'm not sure there were select fans, but there he's there with the fans, and the fans just are loving it. It's like, Okay, he's out there with the fans. Yes, how could you not love this guy that's getting out there with the fans, just getting everything hyped up, the hype for this, I think, which is fabulous. And to show up at Disneyland, this would just wal away for the fan just to go crazy. One of the interesting things we talked everybody talks about Sigourney Weaver. I listened to a few things that behind the scenes, and one of the behind the scenes.
44:59 I thought was fascinating. Was Sigourney had one thing in her contract for doing this movie, and due to that one item, they had to add a scene to the movie. She said, I want to be on screen with Grogu, and originally she was not on screen with Grogu, and she said, I have to be on screen with Grogu. And her scene with the treats, the little snack that Grogu tries to take just is I love they put that in there.
45:42 Another thing that I thought was interesting is, you guys saw her in the X Wing. Did anybody happen to recognize some of the other people on the X Wings? Besides, I think one person cast from a previous Star Wars. Movie direct this from the show The show Manali directors. Yeah. Yeah, it's the fact that just to get all these casts, all these directors that got the oh, I get to be in the movie playing a pilot. I learned that later and just smile. It's like, Oh, what a way they show up in a movie. It's like, Okay, we helped put it together, let's show up in the movie.
46:27 I do think that the poison scene went a little long, but overall, I love the action in here they say Grogu didn't really have a growth in this one. I think Grogu did have a growth in this one because we've got to see him use his use his use the force a lot more at the end of the movie. I love when he started using the force a little bit. We've seen him put a creature to sleep once before they go. Everybody goes head to head against their opponent, Grogu looks at him and puts a creature to sleep. It's like, yes, that that is so Grogu. But I love where it's like, Okay, we have to get rid of the why do we get rid of the Ennitt?
47:18 Why do we get rid of the huts? Well, because they saw him, and I love the ideas. Okay, they saw him. Okay, I guess that's their death sentence. But I love how this place looked a lot like the Java's Alice in Tatuen. I love how this place looks so much, so much like that. And of course David's video there, I remember the speech hees name. But the little engineers. I love these little guys that are the engineers coming in to fix Grogo's ship and kind of help a little bit to rescue, Rescue, Rescue, Mando.
48:06 I just I love the fact that they gave. Him a new. Ridge Crest, give him back his ship, even though it's not his ship yet, and I'm sure it's going to be at the modifications to make it a little more closer to his ship. But I love seeing that ship on it. I can even pull out and say, yes, I have my Grogu figure. As I told the guys here, everybody here, it's like, yes, I that's the one they gave up the theater where the cup. My problem was a friend of mine two spots in front of me, grabbed the last Grogu cup topper, so I had to find it online. I definitely want to make sure I've got something to remind me of it. But as I told the guys, I saw the movie with I'm agreeing with you guys in giving an eight point five. That's what I told them. I was scoring it and it's like that's when I'm still scoring, and I think that's a perfect evaluation.
49:16 Now this movie went loved it. I will not sure if i'll see in the theater, but I will watch it again. And the entire. Series, well, that brings us in a full circle right back to you, Paul, Oh my friends. Okay, Well, as I mentioned, I wanted to see his picture twice, right, and the first time I saw it, I had a little less than an excited reaction to it. If I was judging it based on that first viewing, I would have come in much lower. I would say probably would have been like a six or seven for me if I had only seen it the one time. I feel like it was really a safe choice to deliver this right because it really isn't that connected to the series at all. There's very little in terms of character or storytelling in this movie, you know, I'm sorry there is, and just recognizing things from other movies and well, I know what that is. That's from X y Z.
50:14 That is not storytelling, friends, I am sorry, it is not it is. It is recognition and it is you know, marketing, and there you have it. But it's not a story. So just seeing something you recognize from some other part of the franchise it doesn't really count as writing, and so I feel the writing on this one was a little weak. Unfortunately, there was really no If you watch the show right, you get a lot of information, a lot of other really cool characters, right, You'll get characters like Cobb Van who I was really hoping that some character like him would show up, or Ahsoka or more with Boca Tan. These are the characters who you really get a lot of dialogue and storytelling and myth building.
50:55 The story pushes forward with those characters a lot and on book of Boba Fan, right, So I thought there was a real good opportunity to to do some character work, you know, give Mando a little bit more of a push towards, you know, growing into his role. And I just it was not so great as far as that goes. So I really felt they they kind of there's there's very little dialogue in this movie. It's mostly just action and exciting action. As it may be. I think that, yeah, it's it's just not particularly well done in terms of the writing side of things, right, And initially I really was like, the rot of a hut plot is what you came up with, and that's somehow was like enough to like we're going to make that the plot of the movie. I was really surprised by that because I didn't think it worked really well. I mean, it's kind of like you know, uh, callbacks to you know, on the waterfront almost really, I don't know if anybody ere even knows what I'm talking about, but yeah, it's kind of got that sense to it. And I like a lot of the gangstery stuff though. And I'm really glad though that I went back and saw it a second time, because you know, you want to remind yourself, essentially, if you can see this movie with an auditorium full of like kids and younger folks and families, really, because that's really what's going on here, and they really did, you know, want to try to make a movie that, okay, is really super safe and not super creative, but it is
52:26 in its DNA it is Star Wars right when you have things like the dragon, snake, big monsters everywhere that are regularly exciting, and I liked. I think I came away from my second outing being willing to forgive some of the story stuff and being more appreciative of the craftsmanship involved in terms of like the special effects. They brought back legendary stop motion animator Phil Tippet to do the sequence with the two enormous droid bodyguards outside of the hut Twins' palace on Nahuda, and that is an amazing piece of stop motion animation. I hadn't seen anything like that in years. It's really really great. Say what you will about Pedro Pascal. Grogu's kind of star of this movie. He's really got all the best moments. I think, as pretty much everybody I talk to myself included, it's Grogu and Neon Zelln's who really get the greatest reaction from the audience. They are hilarious, They're really fun, they have this is all puppetry, right, These are little puppet characters, which is really refreshing. So I think that kind of stuff, the creature building, the stout motion, the craftsmanship, the excitement of just old fashioned, adventurous storytelling, even though it is a really slim volume of storytelling that hopefully people who've not seen the show will go and watch it now after I have to see this movie because I think the series is a lot better in terms of storytelling than this one. But I think craftsmanship and overall love of Star Wars. I'm a long time Star Wars fan,
53:58 like from back forever. I mean I saw the original movie in theaters, so I'm going way way back, and I've got dying affection for this stuff, right, I think it's certainly a better outing, I think than Rise of Skywalker, if that's your litmus test, right from where the last time we the last time we saw Star Wars movie theaters. So my bumping my grade up to an eight, which I think is appropriate. It's real solid for this picture we do right now live in a time where escapism is necessary and adventure storytelling is super welcome, So I think for me an eight is appropriate. If this had been better storytelling with some other characters, if they had given Sigourney Weaver something to do as an actor, I would have bumped us up to a nine or ten happily.
54:44 But she doesn't get to do anything. She's basically like, you know, I don't you know, here's your assignment. You know, it's just kind of a waste a really really you know, epic talent. So you know, points down for the storytelling, which was really really weak, but points out up for everything else in the overall spirit of Star Wars adventure and action in filmmaking, which I will never be so locking in a solid eight. I would love it if they necessarily did not continue doing this franchise in the theater. This was a squeaked out season, you know, scrunched it down into a two hour picture. Go give us another like eight to ten episode season where we can get involved and do some good storytelling, some good character work, and really give us a good rich canvas. So I would like to either get back into the series format again, but a lot of it I enjoyed, So that's where I'm at. Leave it at eight.
55:38 There you go, Thanks, all right, Charles. Our Facebook fans gave it a seven point seven. What did the Tuck Spurts have to say? Trek Spurts gave it an eight point three, so I think we liked it a little better than some of the fans. But that's about what the people were scoring on this. I forgot to mention. I was going to bring up the fact that this was part of this part of this movie was stuff that was supposed to be in season four, But I'm hoping in the process they've still got more stuff and maybe we'll still get more stuff for season fall for season four. Yeah, I forgot to mention. My least favorite part of this movie is where I had to go use the restroom.
56:21 But you know, I missed some of it. I couldn't really you know. Remember they were trying to get people to sign up for the Okay, yeah, not go the other way. I mean maybe I'm just I'm wondering if I would feel like Paul. Maybe upon a second viewing, maybe I would take my score from a seven to and eight. Who knows, you know, it's hard to I think it's when you walk in with certain expectations, right, It's like when I walked into Star Trek five thinking it was the last Star Trek movie, and so it was going to be the best Star Trek movie, and then it was so bad? Will possibly be this bad? Oh good thing?
57:06 That made Star Trek six the best really best of all the Star Trek movies. I don't know, the one with the whales. I like that. Yeah, preaching, Yeah, it's it's all right. I saw my shot. I had windows. Uncle Jim cuts us out of the podcast after we said that. It's like, mute, We're just. Then we're not going to SEBS News. Don't even get me started. You must speak freely. But it's just like for me, it was just like Act three, right, It's just so much gunplay and just so much pew pew PuO p pew PuO pew. It was just endless, and there was no moments of like you know where I mean the Jedi films, there's usually a lot of like heart in your throat, you know, myth building, right, uh luke, I Am your father? Right, or some you know, dramatic thing where somebody's life has changed and there's a pivotal moment where you nothing will ever be the same again. Right.
58:11 You get those in the Jedi movies for the most part, right, because it's focusing on the human element of things, right. And I would have loved to see Pedro without that helmet for most of the time. Right. Engineer a story where you get to see the guy because he's a huge draw, right. I think that killed a box office a little bit to have him be kind of buried under the helmet so much. You could engineer a story where he doesn't have it around him for a whole time. It would be easy. So yeah, it's just I just a lot of the writing. I just had that thing where it feels like, you know, initially I was like, is this God? I just hate to even think these thoughts, and that we live in a world. It's even remotely like this, But it's like this sort of almost feels like a screenplay that was put together by Ai. Right. It didn't feel like a human screenplay to me, because it's now there will be the many big fighting scenes and droids will.
58:54 Come and Meaul, Isn't that like I'm not gonna lie aside from and Or? Isn't most Star Wars that way? It is? But the big big human moments that punctuate all that stuff, right, I mean, you know, there really really are, especially in like the the more human centric films like the prequel trilogy, even the sequel trilogy, right, there'd be some bigger moments on there. I mean the sequel trilogy, a lot of those big moments went to Kylo Ren right and or Mark Hamill. Right, but there would be big human moments where things fundamentally are entering a new phase and we didn't really get this. It's mostly just kind of like, Okay, you're you're wounded. We need to heal you, and there's not real any doubt about that, and we know you're gonna be fine, and then we'll go back and fight some more. It's just it's not very satisfying storytelling for me so.
59:50 I mean I at least expected Grogu to take a shot to the chest and his little plate armor because they spent so much time on his little piece of plate armor. I was like that suckers gonna save him at some point, and then it. Never did. Anyone else think that the ending battles seemed a little less like it was just really quick and really short. Like all the other Star Wars movies they have the big battles at the very end of the movie, but all of a sudden, it was like this one was like kind of short, but. I felt like it had groaned on interminably for me. I mean, yeah, just the opposite reaction. I was just like, good lord, are we still walking low? Okay, well we're coming in hot, be careful. I mean, Sigourney like every you know cliches that they could put in the screenplay. Sure, Pete Headseth was watching it, go yeah qqq enough with the shooting and enough with the you know, I'd rather have a story with characters think they're out of thinking.
1:00:51 It is just they needed always champion story over everything else, and you know, you gotta have. Better, right, I will say that they. We're in a point right now, or we don't know where this whole franchise of Star Wars is going. It's going to go places if we have better writing. I know that the game of the Chess figures because seeing them like, you know, big and you know, trying to kill Mando, they were they were kind of terrifying. They looked so much more innocuous on the game, and I want to say, you know, let the Wookie win, you. Know, especially like the millipede one that was scary, really.
1:01:32 Scary, the original soundtrack from the Chess Game and put it in the movie. You know, the creature of stuff was just amazing. That's just the thing. It's just like, you know, it's like I'm of two minds. It's like part of me can criticize the storytelling, but then I look at the work of the crafts, the design people and the artists and people who have slaved away for literally years to evoke all this stuff and you know, put their imaginations out there. It's that's going to win me over every time. I wish they had a more moving story to hang all that stuff onto, you know, because you know, recognition alone doesn't float the boat, right, But still, I mean I just a world with another Star Wars movie in it is richer because of it. Right, I'm not one of these people who Disney Disney, you know that person. Right, I'm thrilled the Disney, you know. I just I just a little bit more focused on storytelling and the art and a little less story focused on profit, gentlemen, and I think you will be well suited.
1:02:37 All right, Well, there you have it, guys. The Mandalorian grogu thumbs up the trucks first, go see it, walk, don't run to the movie theater. All right, guys. As now it's time for our sci fi birthdays. You know what that means. That means we got. To see. A gread. That was not a clute song. All right, guys, this is a part of the show where we have some fun with some sci five birthdays. And we always let Eric start off our sci Fi Wenesday section. Why savvy and I remembering those sci fi itons who are no longer with us, So take it away, Eric, Yeah, Jim.
1:03:31 This week we're gonna start just a little differently because we lost a member of our sci fi community this week. Kelly Curtis, so Star Trek Deep Space nine actress Kelly Lee Curtis, sister of Jamie Lee, dies at the age of sixty nine years old star Trek Deep Space nine guest star Kelly Lee Curtis passed away at the age of sixty nine on Saturday May thirtieth, According to a social media post uploaded by her Oscar winning sister, Jamie Lee Curtis. The Halloween star and horror genre's renowned scream Queen wrote the following on Instagram. A warm ALOA to my older sister, Kelly Lee Curtis. She passed away this morning in her home in Nature at Peace. She was my first friend and lifelong confidant. She was jaw droppingly beautiful and a talented actress. She played a mean game of hearts, collected turtles, loved her family, nature, music, thrifting, travel, Facebook, and POKEMONNGO. She was proud of her Danish roots and Hungarian Jewish ancestry, and was a devoted American patriot. She will be remembered for her loving generosity, fierce opinions, endless curiosity, unique style, and her powdered almond crescent cookies at christ Christmas, hence her name Anti Cookie. Kelly always signed off any message or fare thee well with a Hungarian blessing. If
1:05:05 stead velid God is with you, is stead velid to my sister of the Sun and the Moon, my tie, I'll see you on down the line. Kelly Lee Curtis has the honor of being among the very first guest stars to appear on Deep Space nine. Curtis portrayed Miss Sarta in the season one episode Captive Pursuit, which aired for the first time over thirty years ago on January thirty first, nineteen ninety three. Sarta was an alien who worked for Quark on Deep Space nine. Although Curtis's part was a small one, the actress enjoyed an incredible career working in Hollywood, just as her sister Jamie Lee did. In fact, many Star Trek fans may not be aware that Kelly Lee also appeared in one of Jamie Lee's biggest hits, Trading Places from nineteen eighty three, as Muffy.
1:05:55 Kelly Lee Curtis, of course, is the daughter of Tinseltown's royal couple, Tony Curtis and Janet Lee. And so we say farewell to Kelly Lee Curtis just this year, just a few days ago, Happy birthday to you and we already miss you. Happy birthday as well this week to actor Sebastian Shaw. Yes, that's right. Sebastian Shaw was the English actor, theater director, novelist, and playwright and poet remembered by Star Wars fans as the man behind Darth Vader's redemption. That's right. He's the like guy you see when they take the helmet off in Return of the Jedi. So no less than at least three people have connections to the original the Darth Vader, and then they just keep adding up, right, So Sebastian Shaw lost back in nineteen ninety four. Happy birthday to him and thanks for playing Anakin slash Darth Vader. Happy birthday as well to Kevin Conway, the actor who played Kyless in the Star Trek Nest Generation six season episode Rightful Air. You know, Kevin didn't decide to pursue a career in acting, and until he was twenty four years old, he originally worked as an IBM sales analyst prior to becoming an actor. I love that.
1:07:09 I love when companies like IBM come up and you're just like, whatever happened to them? I know, they're still around. But Conway appeared as himself and the Earl of Hastings in Al Pacino's nineteen ninety six documentary Looking for Richard. He was an actor and director. He was known for Gettysburg from nineteen ninety three, if you never saw that TV movie that was Fantastic, Thirteen Days from two thousand and Invincible from two thousand and six. He actually turned down the role of Theodin in Lord of the Rings so he could reprise the role of Buster Kilran in Gods in Generals in two thousand and three. The role went to Bernard Hill, of course. Instead. Conway had a reoccurring role as Seamus O'Reilly in the HBO series OZ, which I had a strange affinity for, despite the fact that it wasn't really that. He also provided the control voice for the Revival of the Outer Limits, a role he took over from, of course, the infamous and famous Vic Parrien from back in the day. So Kevin Conway, thank you so much for all your sci Fi and Star Trek contributions. Happy birthday to you, sir. Happy birthday to Michael J. Pollard, the actor who played Yan in the TOS first season episode Mary Pollard was began his acting career back in nineteen fifty eight, having at only nineteen years old. He was a character actor, accumulating almost one hundred appearances in movies and television series throughout his career.
1:08:39 In nineteen sixty seven, he earned an Academy Award nomination as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role of C. W. Moss in the film Body and Clyde. And if you haven't seen Body and Clyde, you should see that movie. It's one of the best. He also earned two Golden Globe nominations for that role, one for Best Supporting Actor and one for Most Promising Newcomer. We also saw him in Lost in Space in the episode The Magic Mirror Back in the Day, and of course the movie Scrooged, one of my favorites from the late eighties with Bill Murray. He has been a ton of other stuff. I like to remember him from House of a Thousand Corpses because sid hey maybe so. Thank you, Michael J. Pollard for all of the cool things that you did. You lived to the ripe old age of eighty years old, and we lost you back in twenty nineteen.
1:09:26 Happy Birthday, Happy birthday as well to Ivy Bethuen, the actress who played Duana in the Next Generation first season episode When the Boo Breaks. She was best known for her role as Ma Peabody in the nineteen eighty five hit time travel film Back to the Future. Yes. She's also known for her regular role as Miss Tuttle on the nineteen eighty one Western series Father Murphy. She mostly worked in theater and in television during her career. She can also be seen in lots of episodes guest starring from the eighties and nineties. Just think of a show, she was probably on it at some point. She was only the eighth Star Trek performer to reach the age of one one hundred years old. That's right, we lost her at one hundred and one years old. She was born nineteen eighteen lost July nineteenth, twenty nineteen. Happy birthday to Ivy Bituin. Happy birthday as well to Renee Murat Aberjeenois, the actor who's best known for portraying Chiefs of Security Odo on Star Trek Deep Space nine. He appeared as Colonel West, of course, in the best Star Trek movie of all time, Star Trek six, The Undiscovered Country. Although his scenes were initially cut for the film's theatrical release, glad we finally got to see those in the video releases.
1:10:45 In addition, he made a guest appearance as Ezraul in the Enterprise first season episode Oasis aber Zeennoa was also briefly considered to portray the doctor in Star Trek Voyager. What would that have been like? Starting his career on the stage in nineteen seventy, he won a Tony Award as the Best Featured Actor for his portrayal of Sebastian Bay and Coco. He gained a TV fame for his Emmy Award nominated role as the snooty Clayton Endicott, the third on the comedy series Benson. That's, of course where I first saw him. He also guests. Yeah. He also guest starred in The Practice alongside William Shatner in Boston Legal.
1:11:30 And he was also known as playing Father Mulkay in Alman's original nineteen seventy classic Mash Lots of other Cool Things, did some video games and all kinds of cool stuff. What a great actor and what a great character that we got to see throughout Deep Space nine renee. You're at Abergenois lost back in twenty nineteen at the age of seventy nine years old. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to Maurice Evans, the British American actor born in Dorset, England. Maurice Evans best known as doctor Zaias Doctor Zeas Doctor Zaias in Planet of the Apes and has Samantha Stephens father Maurice in Bewitched. I will admit that I saw Bewitched long before I saw Planet These so that's where I actually knew him from. I saw every episode of Bewitched back in the day. But yeah, Maurice Evans, thank you so much for your contributions to science fiction and doctor Zayas. What a classic character. Happy birthday to you, and last but not least, on our remembrance list, this week we will say Happy birthday to the actress Sally Kellerman. She, of course, is the woman who portrayed Elizabeth Dinner in the TOS first season episode where no man has gone before had to wear those contacts right. She's best remembered for portraying Major Margaret hot Lips Hulahan and Robert Altman's acclaimed nineteen seventy film Mash, for which she received supporting Oscar and Gold Globe nominations. Remember the movie, not the TV show. That's why she doesn't look like the actress
1:13:01 from the TV show. Sally was attracted to the performing arts after seeing Marlon Brando's star in the film Viva Zapata from nineteen fifty two. She in the nineteen sixties, she pursued a singing career and it just eighteen years old, was offered a contract with Verve Records. Unfortunately, stage fright daunted her from performing live and she never got beyond the stage of making demos and the deal eventually lapsed. Wow, how about that. Some people just are not made for being the star focused on the stage right. But what a great actress. Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad was somebody that she actually used to date as well back of the day, and that band wrote a song about her.
1:13:44 So please go to your YouTube search Grand Funk Railroad Sally and listened to the song and you will know that that song is all about Sally Kellerman back in the day. We lost her back in twenty twenty two at the ripe old age of eighty four years old. You so much Sally for all of your wonderful contributions to Star Trek and beyond. Happy birthday to you, and I would certainly like to now pass this flaming birthday candle over to somebody more qualified to talk about birthdays than me, right V. I don't know, well, I get, I don't know. I'm not sure what that means. But okay, what do I do with that? All right?
1:14:25 Well, my first birthday wish goes out to somebody that was in a show that I actually have never seen, so I apologize. Adrian Paul Hewitt. He played the immortal Duncan McLeod in Highland or the series Highlander Endgame and Highlander The Source. The role of Duncan has brought him the most prominence to date. So happy Birthday. I've got a friend that is like very much into that show. Well, I'll just say the it's one of the few franchises for me that started with a movie and then they made a couple of movies and it was so close to my heart, and then they made the show and the show was so much better for le than the movie. Yeah, they really would I love Okay, I guess I have to love it. Yeah, the show is pretty good.
1:15:20 Next, somebody that I actually saw walk by at Galaxy Con back in March. Did not get to meet him because the line was ridiculously long, but happy birthday to call him Jay Meaney. He's the Irish actor known for his performance across performances, I should say across screen and stage. He has received seven nominations from the Irish Film and Television Academy, And of course, he was best known by Star Trek fans for his portrayal of Chief Miles Edward O'Brien on TNG and d S nine and Thomas C.
1:16:02 Durant on the AMC Western Hell on Wheels for five seasons. Never saw that either, but I saw him definitely in Star Trek, where he liked his coffee double strong, double sweech and making blend if you remember that. And he was married to. And he was a man. He was a Union man. That's right. Yeah. What did they call him on Star Trek lower decks with the statue? Was it the most important person? I can't I can't run Star remember, I don't know. I wish I could have met him at that at that con, but I had waited so long to meet Ethan Peck and I just didn't have it in me to stand in the line to meet anybody else.
1:16:49 It was just but I saw him walk by, So there's there was that. I mean, that's almost as good as Jim peeing next to Q right. I got. Uh, I mean you saw him. He was right there. I know, I know, but I don't even know what. I don't even know what to say to that. Oh my god, all right, well let me continue, let me try to pull it together here. Oh my god, that's going to be in my head for the rest of the night, you know.
1:17:33 And you because when when John Delancy stepped up next to the you know, I just gave him the old die. He gave me the die that No. Girls don't do that. We don't know, I mean, well never anyway. Can I, oh my god, help me here, I. Can't sees educational? All right? Happy? Oh my god, Okay, I gotta pull a tigether oh man.
1:18:15 Happy birthday to Jules Belair State. She is a Canadian actress who plays Serenity's mechanic Kayleie Frye on Firefly and the movie Serenity. Something Else I didn't see, Sorry, I'm sure she was wonderful. Next one of my favorite episodes of TNG had Nicole Avery Nicki Cox, who played Sargenka in that second season episode pen Pals, where Data is actually talking with her and her planet is like on fire, but he saves it, and she was just really cute in that. That was also with this was one of the Doctor Pulaski in there, and they had the singing stones. Anyway, she went on to start in a television series unhappily ever after next, Happy Birthday goes out to Anthony T. Montgomery. He portrayed ensign Travis Mayweather on Enterprise and he's the grandson of legendary jazz musician Wes Montgomery.
1:19:24 And last but not. Least, Happy Birthday to Michelle Phillips and we should have had the song playing in the background, but anyway. She's a singer and actress who played Janice Mannheim in the Star Trek Next Gen first season episode will always have Paris. Of course, she was a member of the pop group The Mamas and the Papas Co wrote their hit single California Dreaman with her former husband and BANDMTE John Phillips, which was featured in the Star Trek Picard second season episode Assimilation. So happy birthday to all those fine folks, all right now onto Paul, who probably can keep it together a whole lot more than I can. So pass the flaming birthday candle onto you.
1:20:16 Well, you never know, because I have triggers and you never know what they are or what they might just suddenly snap. So you know, anything can happen on this show. Yeah, all I know is if somebody ever, if somebody ever gave me the guy nod at an adjacent urine, all I would probably blow their brains out. Okay, I was just. Like, what what the guy nod? Are you? Are you kidding? I mean the guy is kind of an acknowledgment of guyness, right, you're giving them. I don't want to not I don't want to business to get an elbow and the teeth, I mean, get the away. From I'd rather reach under the stall for some toilet paper. If I don't know, I can't.
1:20:58 I'm sorry, I can't spare square. I have no. More than about my co hosts, and I wish. That's what that's why, that's why men should I don't know why the men's bathrooms are like that and not like women's where we're like enclosed and we can close the door. Girl, I can tell you why. I can tell you why would you like to know why? I can tell you why as somebody who because I'm a stall bright, men are animals. That is why we're basically like peril a right who like you know, we really are. That's the truth. Don't argue with me. I don't want to see even though I have an actual photo of a Star trek urinal cake, and it's not the kind of cake you eat.
1:21:46 It's not the kind of cake that you serve with the It is just not. So maybe that's what it is. Maybe that's why the nod was invented, because I don't know. I'm just very believe there's got to be there's got to be who's line it? Whose line is it? Any way? Segment where they have scenes from a hat and it's like the worst things to say when you're standing next to somebody. The show will be overnight, right, Uncle. Star Trek you' an okay, this is what John de Lancey gave me.
1:22:30 You know, I'm right, okay, Sorry, I got a grip that was There was a great sequence there. Look at the comedy. It's fawned. I'm like, oh, man, man. Moving on to other people who are like going to be a year older by the time we're done this ship. So happy birthday to American actress who's never used a you'reine old, Julie Cobb okay, who is credited on the original series second season with the very detailed appellation of yeoman. Okay. Then, and this poor girl, frankly, if she had one of those traumatic moments in all of Star Trek, I would hazard to guess, right, she's just this nice, pretty yeoman, Right, She's just show up in the fucking landing party in your red dress, right, and then by any other name, she gets turned into like a one of those styrofoam cubes by the aliens, right, and then he has to pick one to show that they need business, and he just crushes it in his hands. And then when she doesn't come, when she doesn't materialize, you know there it is a horrific moment. I mean, one of those just like shocking. I remember being like more mortified by that as a kid, right, and it's this freaking actress here, so she's you know, I would say, Julie Cobb you know, way up on the trek level of like, you know, memorable deaths, perhaps one of the worst. So yeah, I mean, don't just dismiss yeomen from the second season because I'll tell you what what a what a moment. So yeah,
1:24:01 I mean it's but you know, if you know what I'm talking about, you know what I'm really need to be done. More sleep for this man, please. Mark Shepherd does having a birthday. Let's hear from Mark Shepherd looking at the thing going right down in the middle of his face. You won't see that in a journal. So anyhow, that's that's the lampsy nod right there. That's what you. That's what happens to somebody. Mark is a British actor who played lu Khan in Voyagers six season episode trouds Play. However, this guy's got serious cred, okay, because he's also known for recurring roles as the demon King of Crowley on Supernatural and on the phenomenal Ronald D. Moore reboot of Battlestart Galacty. He played Romo Lampkin on that show too, which is a really cool garacter. This guy really knows what he's doing. Terrific actor. A lot of small character work, doesn't have a lot of starring roles, but really really great.
1:25:04 So check out Child's play World worst is that show? But no, no, he was. No, he was the world's worst. Stab on that episode? Oh the character. I'm like, I'm not IMDb World's worst Dad? How many seasons was that? I had a moment? Not in this lifetime? Okay, okay, moving on this gentleman, is you know living icon? I must acknowledge the great Caire Delay, American actor, best known, of course, for his portrayal of astronaut David Bowman in the iconic nineteen sixty eight san Ley Coo Bridge film two thousand and one, A Space Odyssey. He appeared again in the nineteen eighty fourth sequel twenty ten The Year We Mad, with Roy Scheider, both from Arthur C. Clark novels. How than for grabbing the emergency brake slowing the train down momentarily, one cannot mention care Delay and science fiction without acknowledging his seldom discussed also television program. I can't tell if it's in that tiny little print there or not, but there was a show. If you were of a certain age as I was in the seventies that you might remember a television program very culty, very few people remember it called The Star Lost. Is that one of the ones that's in that mosaic there? Friends? Does anyone see this is Starlust? Excellent? Excellent, because that's a great, so really weird show. It was
1:26:35 filmed in Canada and created by Harlan Ellison. Okay, legendary science fiction writer Harlan Neilson, who subsequently took his name off the show because he was not happy with it. But care Delay plays this man in the far future who is on the spaceship called the Star Lost, and it's basically all of these giant pods. I mean, the ship almost looks like the ship in Silent Running, and every pod is like another world or city, and he has to basically find his way going from you know, every episode he would go into a new dome to basically try to figure out if there was a way to prepare because the arc that they're on, it's like this giant space arc and it's going to crash and disappear unless they can figure out what to do right, So it's like all of the future of mankind is on there. Care Delay was the star of the Star Loss though, and it's a crazy show. It was shot on videotape in Canada with a lot of green blue screens, chroma key stuff back in the early days with tech more effects. Walter Kaneig was on the show, Sterling Hayden, Samon Oakland, a lot of John Polakos. They had a lot of star trek vets and genre vets are on the show all the time. But if you're looking for something crazy, you can buy it on like Amazon on TVD for like ten bucks. Right, but it's a crazy piece of science fiction history. It would be crazy to mention care Delay and honor his birthday and not mention this because it's a very interesting piece of cold history.
1:27:56 But forever he will be the open the pod doors, Hew, open the pod doors. I'm sorry, Dave, he will. That is his place in cinemasty is cemented for all time. So we so loute you here. Delay. Absolutely amazing to be able to celebrate your birthday. So there, we love it. Happy birthday goes out to luminary Lina Thompson, actress and director who of course originally played what Was There? Lorraine Baines McFly. I want to say Yeah, before she got married, she was Lorraine Pains and who would eventually marry mister McFly and in the Back to the Future trilogies, right, and she's the one who has that clinch with her future son in the car and the parking lot. It's like, something's wrong here, what's wrong with this picture? But tremendous actress she was in. We're acknowledging her for her work directing Picard's second season episode Assimilation and Watcher because she is a formidable director. Also played Diane Werner character in the episode fly Me to the Moon that series as well, so she one of several non series regulars who both acted and directed for a star Trek. So she's gets the job done really really amazing phenomenal there. Of course, everyone will always remember her for Back in the Future.
1:29:19 And then she was also in the eighties pictures Howard the Duck, which she's still trying to scrub from her IMDb page. Yeah, still really trying hard and some kind of wonderful from the John Hughes gampt. There, so great stuff. Leiah Thompson phenomenal presence. Also, there was a sitcom that I watched. It was called I think Caroline in the City where she was like a cartoonist or something. Does anybody remember that? I vaguely remember that. Yeah, I don't think I ever watched them. I remember the ads were. Yeah, we're we're all trying trying to scrub Howard the Duck out of our collective mind size because yeah. Yeah, it's it's it's a it's a special one. I mean, it's it's crazy. Happy Birthday too. Zachary Quinto Okay, amazing portrayal of Spock before it all happened on Paramount Plus right, he was over there in the two thousand and ninth Star Trek started into the Darkness and Star Trek Beyond resurrecting the character before anyone else did. It took a lot of guts to take that on too, I'll tell you what. And it was also played Counter Terrorist Unit CTU analyst Adam Kaufman on twenty four that crazy Donald Keeper Sutland series there. And I don't know if anybody here was a fan of the show Heroes. It was on NBC for the show, really really fun show. I mean, it's kind of an X Men type thing in a lot of ways, but not to be dismissed. It's a good series and he played a super powered serial killer
1:30:52 named Siler Gabriel Siler Gray on that show. Seek it out if you haven't ever watched it. It's it's good television, right. I think it kind of was ahead of its time in a lot of ways. But he was the bad guy, a really interesting recurring character. But yeah, really really phenomenal actor. I still man, I have not given up on the the JJ Abrams Star Trek universe. I'd love another one of those, and such a good cast, such a good cast throughout all that stuff. Was really a fan so I would love to see them get their shit together at Paramount. Oh sorry, did I say something high Paramount? Hi, how are you? Ellison's doing good? I'd like to see you get your shit together with the franchise and make a decent Star Trek movies. That too much that ask.
1:31:36 It's only been like how many years for crying out loud, thanks just started to get that in there, because you know, I'm sure you don't have enough money to count, so you know, by all means, Happy birthday. Also to sci fi iliminary Morena Baker or Bakaren, I'm probably mispronouncing it right. But an actress who's all over the place. Okay. It first came to my attention is playing Nara in the series Firefly and of course subsequent movie Cementity. And I'm sorry you mentioned this is something you are not familiar with the Firefly universe, and so it is. Put it on the top of the list. It's a it was a one season wonder that the Fox didn't know what to do with. What a shock, and it became a cult hit the likes of which we've never ever seen.
1:32:24 It's a science fiction western comedy, if you can believe it. But it's just badass cool, full of good actors and good characters. And they made a spin off movie that's actually pretty damn good as well. And it's just it's very unique. It will make your laugh your ass. Off, Okay, I need to do that. Highly recommended, and if. You fall in love in one season is not enough. Plenty of comics and novels as well to fill out the universe. A counity that laughed my ass off, I will I will take. It's it's it's a GM if you're if you're not a brown coat. The fans call themselves, you will be. She's also played villainous Anna in the v Rebooth that they did right a few years ago, right, and she played Adria on season ten. Started at SG one Vanessa Carlisle and Deadpool and Deadpool two. She's done a sun of work, a lot of genre stuff. Absolutely lovely, wonderful performer pretty much, you know, generally a really good magnet for good projects. She doesn't just choose craps. She tends to choose pretty good stuff. So and has a fondness for science fiction and fantasy, much to our good fortune.
1:33:35 So she also did a putt a good job and the show got them. That's right. She was on that show, right, And I think I remembering it wrong. I don't have her page up in front of me, but I think she was in the show Homeland as well. I could be wrong. Almost positive she was in Homeland, which is a really good political thriller. Also, So she does a ton of good work, I mean really really really good. And you know it's to do dramatic scenes opposite all that Deadpool makeup. That's not easy, and she just did a phenomenal job in there. So it's just they can for granted, but that's that's hard work, so love her. Gregory Harrison's also having a birthday. American actor he played, of course, people forget Logan's Runner the TV series I Am remember when Logan drunk. That's right, Friday Nights Man, I remember, I was watching all of it. He played Logan five in the TV series and then came back and played doctor Gonzo Alonzo Gates on Trapper John MD, which is another one of those show spin offs that happened there. And ruthless business tycoon Michael Sharp with an E in the CBS series Falcon Crest. Of course, we in this day and age, thank god, because of Star Trek mankind has enlightened ourselves and evolved, so we no longer have ruthless business tycoons.
1:34:58 No, not at all, all none. No, that trope has never made itself into the real world, did it? Absolutely not? And finally for me, a big happy birthday to this cat. Love his work. The wonderful British actor James Callous, who, of course we honor in our Star Trek realm for briefly playing Maurice Picard, kind of an illusionary Starfleet psychiatrist in the image of Star Trek percard episodes, was Stargazer, Monsters, Hide and Seek. We's kind of like supposed to be in a fantasy version of Picard's Father is how I took it. So it's a little confusing, but I'm pretty sure that that was set together. There some Picard fanis set me straight, I'm sure.
1:35:46 But I will always love James Kallis for his phenomenal multi season portrayal, very complicated role of doctor Guys Baltar in Ronald de Moore's Star Glands, which was just amazingalking about a couple months ago, but I still run the people who've never watched that ship you've seen Battlestar Galad together. Yes I have, Actually I have. Okay, that's where. Where the cylons were. They looked like humans and that was deeply disturbing to me because it's like I was used to the old school, you know, with the lights. Yes, yes, well he was so great. He was such a great guy as Baltar because he was just so neurotic, right, he was just like he was trying to be confidence swaggering and think he was like sexy because you know the one Cylon loves him and stuff. But he's a pile of nerves and he just he portrayed terror and anxiety better than anybody, which is phenomenal at just showing a guy who's just barely holding it together because he's got such a terrible secret.
1:36:46 He's like the trader of all traders, right, and he's just hoping no one will find out. And it's just great. He would be such a good character for like the Trump administration. I mean, just amazing performance, amazing. So that's a great guy. All these folks phenomenal birthday celebrants, but man, does Uncle Jim have some good ones. I'm telling you coming up, especially the next one that he's leading with. I'm the little envious you, Uncle Jim, because Wow, she's she's phenomenal. So I think we should graciously give the floor to he who will always be real Here, Uncle, I. Thank you so much. Paul. You guys can go to check Talking dot com and check out our interview with her if you're so inclined. She was a lot of fun to talk to, so you can check that out.
1:37:34 Check talkin dot com, look under guest stars, find her and give it a listen. At any rate, we want to say happy birthday and a hardy cup lot to Susie Plaxon herself. She's an American actress who appeared in or different roles on Star Trek. First, she appeared as Doctor Salar. In the TNG episode The Hizoid Man, she played Lady Q, and the Voyager episode The Q and the Gray she played Tyler, and Enterprise episode Sees Fire. She was an Andorian. However, she will always be forever known and be loved by STARSUK fans as playing Kay law Mate, a warf mother of Alexander, and the TNG episode The Eminary Emissary Reunion and First Born. There you have it, Susie Plaxon, thank you so much. I have a happy, happy birthday. Please check out her interview with us.
1:38:34 It was a lot of fun. And boy, I have got the greatest birthday from the greatest movie next right here. I'm so excited about this one here that I can't believe I get to do this one. But we've got to say happy birthday to Cynthia Gao. She's the Chinese American actress and model who played Caitlin and the best Star Trek movie ever produced that will ever be made. Star Trek five The Final Frontier. She has a VA and Political Sciences from International Relations from UCLA and became an Emmy Award winning reporter for various TV news stations, inclusing k XTV News ten in Sacramento, California and kpi X Channel five Eyewitness News and San Francisco. But she will forever be known for her awesome performance as Caitlin dah and Star Trek five The Final Frontier, the best Star Trek movie ever ever. And I got to say that, So, Happy Birthday is Cynthia gal Now, June first was my birthday and I share that with Odell, who, by the way, I remember from a nineteen seventy sixth movie called King Kolm.
1:40:01 Maybe other people remember him in that he was in King Kong. But on June one, believe it or not, yeap on June first starts for three. The Search for Spock was released in nineteen eighty four. It was written and produced by Han Bennett, directed by Lennondinmoy the first movie that he ever directed, and June first, nineteen eighty four, I was there to see it. Of course, David, all the team, all that they've loved, all that they've put bull.
1:40:44 All that they've stood full will now. Be put to the test Star Trek three for Search or Spot. The word, sir, the. Word is no. I am therefore going anyway. You do this, you'll never sit in the captains chair again. Engage all the systems. They're all mornings cleared. There one quarter impulse power. Someone is stealing the Enterprise. A bird of bracers. She saw me tornedos shields on the shields not responsive. You're just sitting duck. Join us on this the final voyage of the Starship Enterprise, Star Trek three or Search or Spot.
1:41:31 The adventure continues. So did anybody join the search for Spot? I was there too, I joined the search. A lot of fun, good movie, good memories, great poster there, Happy Birthday, the Star Trek three, the Search for Spot. Anybody have any memories they want to share about the movie, like guynds that were going on at all? Okay, all right, Well with that, we're going to move on to our Star Trek news. Okay, Eric, you're going to start us off with our classic Shata says where.
1:42:44 Yeah, absolutely, my favorite segment. William Shatner almost abandoned his historic space trip. That's right, William Shatner broke a record when he became the oldest person at the time to reach space during in October twenty twenty one flight with Blue Origin, but he almost abandoned the trip entirely. While talking with Neil de Grasse Tyson during their The Universe's Absurd Event in Beverly Hills, the Star Trek actor recalled wanting to jump ship a jump spaceship when he was climbing eleven stories to get to the opening of the spacecraft. During his trek up the stairs, he noticed some gas coming off one of the events, which he was told was hydrogen. Shatner immediately thought of the Hindenburg disaster, an airship filled with hydrogen that caught fire and was destroyed in nineteen thirty seven. It makes sense why he would be nervous, he said. So now, with trepidation, I enter the ship and I'm in the chair a five point buckle, and the countdown begins, he said. To make matters worse, someone in ground control noted that there was an anomaly, which caused Shatner to think, what the f is an anomaly?
1:43:54 The countdown continued, and Shatner then heard, all right, everybody were removing the gantree. Anybody who wants to get off, get off now. And I go, okay, and I think I can't. I'm Captain Kirk, I can't. I love that pure pressure moment. After safely landing back on Earth, Shatner was overcome with emotion. Jeff Bezos was there with a microphone and international cameras, and I'm weeping, he said, I'm crying uncontrollably, and I don't know why, although he eventually realized that I'm in grief. Shit is all over the place in this pristine mountains, and it echoes the shit that we've left all over the planet, that we've left all the planet with. He said, now we've learned that microplastics are floating in our blood, and I speak to you, I could drop dead from microplastics. It's a tragic thing that we're doing to our planet. And I was in grief for the Earth and the beauty that we see all around us. I think I would have a similar moment, like I'm not afraid of heights. I'm not afraid of death necessarily, but man, when you're getting up there in a spaceship, you're like, it's go time, baby, right, you can't.
1:45:03 He can't undo what you're about to do. So really fun article. I love his insight and man, at plus ninety years old, this guy is living life large. And I just realized he was a kid when the Hindenburg exploded because he was born in thirty. One and that. Wow. Yeah, so that's kind of wild thinking about that too. There you go. All right, well, let's keep the news train rolling. And I think Charles has something to share with us. Oh, thank you, Eric, thank you. The new Star Trek book wants to map out every one of his timelines. Star Trek is a very interesting relationship with time, not only just because a franchise turned sixty later this year.
1:45:50 A side room a thousand years of history presented across every Star Trek show as a normal franchise now given us a whole multi universe. Our reality is born from mildred of timelines, from more traditional parallel universes like the Mirror Universe, to branches off deviations like the Kelvin timeline. It can be pretty confusing, even when the dedicated follower of a temporam mechanics class in starfet Academy. So it's a good job our Timeline is getting a big, fancy new book to cover it. All Star Trek Timelines A Voids through Generations of history. A new reference book is coming later this year. Written by Tyler Derek Tyler Acado, Kelly Fitzpatrick, and Star Trek Adventure scribes Michael Dysmuke and Jim Johnson. Timelines will chart the known chronological Storytrick universe literally from a Big bang to its death, covering the events of every Star Trek showing movie from its first sixty years, from a Golden Age of space to the classic explanation of Classic Trek to the far flung future of Storkleet Academy. It's take it's taking an account the way it's time travel is wrecked, havoc and chronologically too, the way without that's falling. Different realities like the Calvin Universe.
1:47:22 The Diversion Mirror Universe will also be included, even if its roots don't come from temporal manipulation to the many a board of timelines we've seen through various Trek stories like Voyagers, year through hel or future visions, seen things like TG's a Good All Good Things Chart Trek Timeline Avidual Voyager goes through generations of history and sets Hit Shells November three, and definitely a book I want in my collection because there's a lot of times I'm curious about Star Trek history and having to go just look it up online and try to build my own diagrams.
1:48:04 So it's interesting to actually get the whole thing put together. It was quiet there for me. It was just quiet there for a second. Yes, this sounds interesting as well. Star Trek's sixtieth anniversary comic to feature stories from Brian Michael Bendis and Lower Decks creator Mike mcpahon. Now for the storied franchise sixtieth anniversary, IDW is putting together a comic special with timeline and galaxy spanning stories that will feature the Trek writing debut of comics author Brian Michael Bendis, a story by David Gerrold, one of the last living writers who worked on the original series and created the iconic tribles and also the sleeve Stacks, and won by Star Trek Lower Dex creator Mike mcphann. The seven story collection will have tales based on the original Star Trek series nineteen seventies Star Trek, the animated series Picard, Lower Decks, and Starfleet Academy. It also features a preview of the all new Star Trek flagship title that IDW will be launching later in twenty twenty six. Vendus also penned a story centered on Sulu after an encounter with George t Kay, the actor who inhabited the character. I grew up in a house of Trekkies, he said in a statement. I
1:49:36 am married to a trekkie years ago. In real life. George to Kay was so kind to me and my family that I jumped at a chance to express my affection for all things Star Trek by cooking up a classic Star Trek Sulu focused story. Gerald wrote or co wrote three original series episodes, including The Trouble with Tribbles, one of the best remembered entries that centered on the fast replicating furry creatures. His story follows Interstellar con man Harry Mudd. The reason why Star Trek has been an enduring part of her culture is that, at its heart, Star Trek has never been about finding enemies to defeat.
1:50:21 It was always about finding allies and friends against the vast darkness of the universe, said Gerald. I was privileged to be part of that original vision. It was an amazing opportunity and I made some of the best friends anyone could ever imagine the chance to return to the Star Trek universe and write a new story, especially one that honors the original series. Yes, it was a privilege. The issue will also include a Lower Deck story by McMahon and artist Mike and Laura Alread, a Star Trek the Animated series story by writer Ryan North and artist Derek ch arm and a war story by writer David Walker drawn by the Escorza Brothers.
