So they're all in their kind of like you know, hoodie style, like grungy outfits from the planet there where they go looking for Klo's mom. And so we say, name this grunge band and top fan Dan CEO said Captain Geech and the Shrimp shack Shooters. I love it.

14:52 Too bad, not too bad, We have no we had better ones last week, but you know it was fun. Anyways. All right, guys, we're going to talk. About a comic corner ISSU number one of Starfleet Academy, and we're going to have Paul through a quick synopsis before we dive right in, So take to Mike Paul. I thank you Uncle Jim. Well, first of all, it's acknowledged our good pals over there at IDW Publishing who continue to keep star Trek alive and well with an ongoing series of different titles. And this is the absolute first issue number one of Starfleet Academy, filling in some of the gaps that we may have seen previously on the show. Here, this particular several issue run is going to be a storyline called Lost Contact. So we begin with Genesis Life and they have been doing something where they're practicing what's called she's doing like a log entry.

15:43 Initially is we're not sure who she's contacting, but she's recounting what the consequences were after the fact. It was something we're about to see in this issue called Consequences of our Planetary Survey Simulation Exercise. So it's some kind of thing where they're put down on a plant in environmental suits and they have to practice a planetary surveillance with real time decision making on a planet called c K two, which apparently has been quite devastated after the burn and there's no life there, supposedly, just some questionable foliage and you know, vegetables and whatnot. And the first part of this supposed simulation that they occur is we supposedly get a warning, let them know that acid rain is coming down, right, But apparently that's not real acid rain.

16:32 It's some kind of simulation that I guess they're experiencing through their suits. It's a little uncertain. One thing I did notice myself on this particular issue was it was a little challenging to follow because the art really looks nothing like the actor's likenesses on this show. For me, I found it a little difficult to tell one from the other because they're all in these very heavy environmental suits like you see on this screen there, right, And it's sometimes hard to tell the characters apart when they're covered up like that, right, and there's a character who's briefly referred to with some new one who's not part of the regular characters we're familiar with, Ensign Falaro. I don't know which one that even was, so it was confusing to me. All of a sudden, though, there's some kind of a sudden ozone storm, which I guess is like the old ion storm they used to have on an original series, right, and it disrupts all of their technology, so conveniently, the cadets cannot being back aboard the ship there, and they're stranded and forced to try to survive on this backwater planet, if you will. They can't bean back, and then all of a sudden, they see what appears to be an alien up in the hills in the distance, on a planet where there's supposed to be no life, right, And Genesis is kind of leading the brainstorming on this should we try to make first contact? What do we do?

17:53 And so she tries to run off to communicate. I will also say that it was very difficult for me to tell what this alien really looked like, So maybe we're going to get a better reveal an issue too. But I've found a lot of kind of close up sketches of it or very distant sketches, so I don't really have a clear sense of what it is. I think it emanated some kind of a sound there, if I was following that correctly as the issue wraps up, because it ends very abruptly without a real cliffhammer, just the cadets stranded. I'm sure about the alien or what to do with the alien, though it seems from the speech going on there that they were all rendered potentially mute or unable to communicate because of this force field that the alien generated. It's really hard to say because it wasn't depicted visually in a way that I could follow, so it was more exposition kind of happening about all this stuff. So again a little rough for me as a first issue, and it seemed like maybe this was written or the art was done before they really had seen any episodes. I don't know, because just I don't or to make it would be weird to get the license to do a Starfleet Academy comic and not have the likeness rights for the actors. That would be odd to me and not usually how IDW rolls. But I had a very difficult time because they didn't really look like the cast members of the show. So for me, I don't know if I should give a letter grade now or do it or a number grade now or do it later. But a little unsatisfied. I would just say,

19:26 you know, especially for a show we're hoping that we'll breathe some life into the show now that it's you know, facing, you know, eminent cancelation and falling off everyone's radar. I think the hope was that a good comic run could maybe juice it up, get things people excited about it again. But I didn't see that here. So what did other folks think? I agree with you completely, Paul, as far as IDW goes. I think this is probably next to that Deep Space nine issue that we reviewed quite a while ago. This issue I felt was not good. Like you said, the art didn't impress me. The characters don't look like the characters, which is odd for IDW because usually they're spot on.

20:13 Maybe you're right, maybe they did this before the show aired. I'm not sure, but the characters don't. I mean, Genesis doesn't even have those little gold eyebrow I mean there's on her head. I mean, I was it was hard to figure out who was talking because I don't know that the characters were hard to distinguish. The artwork wasn't I think up to IDW usual standards, and the alien I agree it just the story didn't. I don't know, it didn't hold water for me. It didn't. It was hard to understand what was going on. I'm with you, Paul, one hundred percent. I mean I was very disappointed in because I love Starfleet Academy. I think it's one of the greatest shows. I think we're lucky to have it. But the comic I thought fell way short of the show. I mean, it could have been anybody on the planet. It didn't have that feel at all.

21:18 So I'm with you, Paul, And for me, I think I'd have to give this one up a five. I think it could have been so much better artwork wise, story wise, so I'm gonna go with a five. So how about you, David. I'd have to agree with you guys as well. When I was reading it, I was having a hard time picturing the voices in my head of like what character was saying it, because for some odd reason, it was just like the artwork itself was like okay, who does that look like? And to me, I was actually really confused myself. I was like, yeah, it's a little tough for me to read, to be honest. Also, it was really short. When I was putting this together and everything, I was like, wow, that one by really quick. For some reason. I was only able to get like maybe twenty some pictures out of this, and I was just like, weird, you know, just is pretty much almost all of the pictures too, And it was just like huh, all right, well, yeah, so to me, this particular book, comic book kind of fell fell flat for me. So I mean, was it before the season one or after or doing maybe? I have no idea. It was just a little strange. So yeah, I might actually go with a four on this one.

22:54 All right, So we got a four from David. How about you, child? I can understand, yeah, I can understand when we we put somebody on a ship and we don't expect somebody to come and to attack it, but to put a group onto a planet and then lose track of the something not being able to track the cadet. Let's get cadets, it's a little confusing. They put them on this thing and it's like, Okay, it's acid rain. Well, I'm confused whether it's real acid rain or simulate acid rain. That was confusing. At least some they lost contact with them.

23:42 That was another confusing. Unless it's aliens somehow block them communications. It got a little strange what was going on with the story. I kind of agree with it. The story kind of fell flat. I think the story it's tagged April in the copyright. The copyright says April. I'm assuming this was made during the series. The publish it. That's the publishing date April was published. Well, and I now see that this is only going to be a This is only going to be a two issue comic I'm seeing according to what IDW has put out, So how do you two issues?

24:23 I thought so much story too. I have to look it up on Amazon. I thought this was more than two issues. But I think they took a lot of individual freedom for the drawings. I don't think the artist really got the work on getting the drawing is done properly. But I'm going to agree with the guys on this one. I might go to I was thinking a seven. I might drop it to a six, but I think this one's kind of running a little short. Little apologies. Now I'm seeing a couple of a couple of other folks who are saying a five issue series, which is usually what you get from my DW. So I think that's probably more like it, unless they had a really negative response and maybe limited it to two.

25:08 But I would imagine five. That's usually what they get. That's what I would expect. I mean, this is, like you guys said, this first issue seems like it's barely even a prologue. It's just the sort of a setup, right, so it's just a very little little. I'll look it up while the next person's going over it, but yeah, this one. Near all right? What about you V? What do you think about? Well, I'm relieved that you all are having difficulties or had difficulties with it, because I thought it. Was just me. I was just I could not follow, and also because I had that free link.

25:48 As I was, I think I was mentioning to Charles earlier. I kept on getting interrupted by inappropriate, inappropriate requests from random people on WhatsApp or something like that. I don't know. So I'm trying to trying to figure this out and not doing and then getting interrupted by those weird ads or those weird you know whatever. So yeah, it was I don't understand. I just didn't understand it. And yeah, the the characters looked nothing like their real life counterparts, so it was it was very, very difficult to figure out what was going on. So I'm with the rest of you on that.

26:34 It's like womp womp. Hopefully the next one is better, but I would give it a five as well. I'm just so. And maybe I don't know if they can improve the artwork. I mean, once they've established it, I don't is this what we're going to be stuck with for the next you know? However many issues because they need to have like a little name texts on the characters so we know who they are, because I just I don't recognize them. But anyway, all right, that's that's my take. All right, Eric, you got the caboose on this one, buddy, So wrap it all up and bring this crazy bag of snakes on home.

27:18 Okay, Yeah, I mean I think a lot of people are commenting on coralai A Spoono's art when I went and I looked them up. The three issues so far where covers have been released of Starfleet Academy are the only thing on their resume, so I think we're probably looking at a new artist that IDW has brought on. I don't know who they are, but I will say that IDW does a particularly good job, I think of ensuring that women are well represented both as writers and as artists in their books. So I'm happy about that.

28:02 I'm I'm assuming CHORALI is a woman. I'm not. I don't have any further knowledge of that, so I could be completely wrong. But the writer appears to be a woman and the colorist appears to be a woman, so you know, good representation in the people writing the book. I did get pulled into the cover, which I thought was beautiful, although I will admit that the likenesses weren't quite there. And you know, the cover is often a different artist from the from the book artist. There was no separate cover artists listed here, so I'm assuming it was also Coralai who did the cover, and I did think that that was a very beautiful piece of art, despite you know, the characters being relatively unrecognizable. I guess as much as you guys are saying right now, So the book had a very familiar feeling. I feel like it was almost like the and I don't remember which episode it was, but there was a Starfleet Academy episode where they had kind of a competition that they had to do and they were all shooting at each other and stuff and they had to score points. Well it's it's essentially kind of a rehash of that kind of story, so not like super interesting as a story mechanism. And I don't think we hear from anybody except maybe what Akade Genesis, and maybe a couple of other people to owe the guy from the War College, but we don't really get a lot of dialogue from a lot of different characters. So whoever it was that said they were having a hard time hearing the voice of the character

29:35 in the way that it was written, I would agree with that. I had a similar experience. I always like a good trope here and there when it's funny, and so the fact that they couldn't be mount was great because that always happens because ion Storm right, there was a bit of bickering going on, which was kind of like the show, which I think is what turns some people off of Starfleet Academy. But I think among people of this age group and that sort of thing. It was very apropos and so I didn't mind the way that that was written. But the alien, I literally I wrote down I didn't see the alien at first in the first panel in which they appear, so I was then super confused about when they started talking about the alien.

30:16 I'm like, what are they talking about? What alien? And then I went back and I saw the little purple guy in the corner. So I don't know, Man, not very interesting, just not very interesting. So I will say that I found the art itself to be very nice. I just don't think that the likenesses were that good. But I like the kind of watercolor like semi transparent style, and there were a lot of really cool like vibrant colors and stuff. And actually, as a comic, the panel layout was really interesting. You know, every single page had different kind of dynamic panel layouts that helped you kind of follow through the story. So, you know, it's absolutely not the worst comic I've ever read, was it? You know, was it the best? Was it the worst like Star Trek comic I've ever read? No, But it was right down there. So man, I wrote down five and then David gave it a four, and I always feel like I have to offset David's score a little bit.

31:18 You're just so nice, Eric, you cannot be you have to be nice. You're just a very nice person. Right, I'll give it, I'll give it a I'll reluctantly give it a five. But but that's because I'm I'm just. What do you want to get it? What do you want to I want to give it like a seven, but I can't even come close to that because it just isn't of that caliber. Right. We've read a lot of Star Trek comics on this podcast, and this one I think, David, you're right. I think it is two to four pages shorter. I only count twenty pages here, so typical comics are like twenty two to twenty four pages. So yeah, I just I don't know. I give it a five, and I wish it was better, man, because I did want the to be our next vehicle to staying in touch with these characters. Right, we love these characters. I know we have a whole season left, but it's so disappointing to already know that they're going to be gone by the time season two starts. The timing of their cancelation announcement was just like it was almost like somebody did the what's it called when people like bet on when wars are going to start and stuff.

32:22 It was almost like that kind of thing where they're just public. Yeah, it was like that was it was like people were betting that Starfleet Academy was going to get canceled and then they had to cancel it before the second season even started anyway at this point, but that's what I give it a five. It's okay. I mean, they're doing better than I can draw, so technically. Yeah, but you're not getting paid David. You know, I don't want to. Say everything that's really bad, pretty artist. I'm just saying, like, you know, it's okay, but it's just like it was good. I just couldn't follow it or tell who was who, or follow the story. But I could tell I could tell who Genesis wise, yeah, but one other male characters.

33:03 I was like, who, Well, and the thing that you and the thing that you guys said about the acid rain. I read this comic two or three times and I'm still completely confused about whether that was real or simulated. Like I just really can't even figure it out, and I'm a smart guys. Just was Jaden one of these was he with them on the planet? He was, but he never said a word he did. He's like advocating. I think he's someone who's advocating that they go hide, right and we should run away. But it's so difficult to tell who's new, and there's an extraneous character who's not even one of the regular characters.

33:44 So it's just like, and he's popping up character. He's going to be the one that's going to die because we don't know who he is. So he's he's he's a bigatory red shirt as it were. Yeah, yeah, I never gave my but listening to Eric, it's like, I want to give it a five, but I can't. I got to give it a four. I just think it's so disappointing, right. It's just like there's a lot of good storytelling out there and a lot of people who I think deserve a shot, and I just don't think that this is worthy of I. I would like to go on record saying I hope we do not continue reviewing this series. I would be very content to leave this at one. We dipped our toe in but there's a lot better stuff that we can be talking about than this story, which I don't think has any surprises in store for us.

Right, Sorry, one is just a major Yeah, it's tough. It's a tough thing, but it's just yeah, it's just And you know, I'm excited to move on to the next comic though, because I feel like that is the antidote that I need. So, like, there's Genesis on the screen there and doesn't look anything like her. It looks like it looks like some bimbo on Instagram. Hell is this looks like she looks like it almost like a Kardashian before, you know, and.

And everybody looks the same they look everybody looks the same. And that cover is by the same artist. By the way. If you look in the back does a cover gallery and it shows who did what, And the cover is the same person, right, I mean it's just a but yeah, it's just not my bag? Can we go on? Can we can we talk about that next one? What's the overall feel of the truck spurts on Starfleet Academy issue number one? What did me give it? Five? Yeah?

35:55 About a four point eight? Wow? Not even why. We have another issue number one to talk about the last starship and we're going to turn to Paul to give us a quick recap on this issue. Ah, this is to me, I love the batting order that we're going in tonight, folks, right because this one, to me was I won't even hide my enthusiasm, right, this was very satisfying. This has been a very well received series. This first issue we're talking about tonight came out back in September of last year, okay, and there was a lot of buzz around it. People were kind of excited about it. And now I can kind of see, you know, the origins here Basically there's a prologue right, very much akin to like TV style set up. Right, We've got a new captain we don't know, Captain Delacourt Sato of the starship Sagan, obviously named after Carl Sagan right, and they are in this encounter with a bunch of Gorn ships, right, and you're, oh, it's it under battle that we've seen many times before. Now this is a captain diplomatically trying to urge then to end their isolation and join the Federation. Whoa, and the Gorner depicted like old school tos Gorn by the way, too, which I found really interesting.

We find out and we never really get a really deep explanation of this, and I don't care because it was so intriguing to me, and I'm sure we're going to find out more about it and other issues. But on the ship they had a to me what looks like the engineer who was a Tholian of some kind. Seemed to be the way the Thlians were depicted on the Enterprise, so his name was Acylic right, And anyhow, the Gorner about to accept this proposal, but then they hear some kind of strange noise of thrumbing, right, and the entire delegation of Gorn ship explodes. All of their warp core detonates, as do all the warp drives on all of the Federation ships. And then the sayan the ship that Captain Delacourt and all of our characters are on it explodes.

37:52 Boom title. I mean, what a prologue, right, pretty exciting. Seventy two hours later, somehow, miraculously, Captain Sato is alive along with his first officer whose name is probably called Wowie. But they's somehow been saved, and we find out that the thli An engineer Silik somehow was able to yank them out and at the last minute and put them in a transporter buffer on like a a torpedo and shoot them away from the ship. So he's manages to save several members of the crew. As crazy as that sounds, right, there were particular ones that Silic felt needed to be saved, including the captain. So you know, a hair brake, hair raising escape, but a cool one.

38:34 Right. So we find out that there was a series that is really well done. And I want to point out something really quickly on here too, if this is not too difficult to see. We were talking about how hard it was to follow who was saying what, But on one of the first pages, if you can see here really closely, you see how there's like a color and a rank emblem next to every one of these little. Area. Seeing what I'm seeing there, guys, it's like, you know, like pips. What a great way to tell who's speaking, right by identifying them with those like, you know, rank insignias and colors and pips. I thought that was a really great solution to the problem we've just seen in the previous comic. Anyhow, I digress slightly. Okay, we find out but on the next next page shows all these different starships kind of with their last transmissions. We find out that all of their trans di little team exploded, and that is when we realized we are seeing the origin of the burn depicted as we never saw it really on Discovery, Right, we found out about it kind of obliquely. Here we're finding we're living through it like it's an actual movie, right, which is really interesting the way it was depicted.

39:39 Right. We find out that ninety six percent of Starfleet was lost, and we have a prominent scientist who's talking about he predicts the end of Starfleet within a year. And Sato's very kirk like and sat that was a really interesting character. He's like part Bulkan, part Trill, part Andrian, part human. He's this wacky hybrid of all these different character teristics. It's really interesting to have a character who is a captain like that. I digress again. Anyhow, he says, I don't agree. We need to do something here to redeclare the life of the federation. He goes. He suggests they build a new ship, and that that new ship be powered not by di lithium but by transwarp drive, which gets everyone's attention, right. And then because transwarp drive will make you think of one particular thing, all of a sudden, in this conference with the few remaining captains that are there, there's this levitating Boorg appears, and it's a new kind of Borg from what we've seen before, but it is Agnes Picard Fans, it is Agnes Girarti, and she explains that there's no longer the Board Collective as such, but the Borg cooperative. She's a new kind of Borg, right, and she wants to be the new flagship's engineer to operate the transwarp drive and also get access to something that is a particular specimen on Daystream Station that we may be have glimpsed previously.

41:02 And she says, I'm here to pay a very old debt Captain Sodo and everyone else agrees. Then we have this montage of this new ship being built from mothbald old prototypes and other salvage vessels, which is declared in a beautiful two page spread as to the uss Omega, very very cool Klingon officer of Balkis is doing a sad journal entry about the interrupted path of life and grief. In this conversation with Hannah. They are both also the other two I believe officers who were rescued by that engineer from the destruction of the Sagan, right, And she's having this conversation she feels very lost, and then we cut away over to today Strom station and we have borg Agnes in there looking around something called Project Phoenix, very interestingly names, and she says, I hear you met God once and came out on top, and that I knew when he read that, Uncle Jim would be just quivering having a moment, right, Because it's a phenomenal Star Trek five reference done well. It was just like wow, wait to integrate that, And you know, I just thought the writing was just really top drawer in this comic all the way through. So she's read there to resurrect James T. Kerr, which is incredible, Right, some other version of him that we don't yet know about in this Project Phoenix. It ends with a Klingon woman named Hashet, daughter of Kuta, and she is explaining while she's brutally

42:35 murdering another Klingon with canon Aker Purple Blood, that they have walked the red path of peace before. Right, this is something that we heard Balkis talking about in our journal, this red path of peace right, and says our ancient myths have been weaponized against us to make us compliant, and now we walk a new path, a black path, with the promise of the Federation's end. So this Hashet is some kind of vengeful cult leading Klingon who's out for blood, doesn't want to see the Federation come back together, wants to go a different direction. And that's where this first issue left us. I thought this was like a banquet. Frankly, from my perspective, I thought this was an extremely good issue.

43:18 There's nothing about it I didn't like. I thought the art was outstanding. It was really crisp, but it really evoked the heyday of Golden comics, right when there was just really beautifully defined art, but a lot of sense of good use of panels to create dynamic storytelling. I thought the writing was really sharp. I love the fact that they were able to reference a lot of things like Star Trek five and Agnes Girarti from Picard and all these things like that that normally I would be like, oh wow, what fan service nonsense, But it was done in such a really cool way and really interesting and just an effective writing. Look at that art. And if you're no One I have a Patreon, you can't see this. But the art is really sharp, it's bold, it's vivid, it's really you're never confused about who's talking, and things move at a really good clip, and there's a lot of great surprises and reveals that happen in here.

This is what I've kind of built up and haven't kept up with since the first couple of issues came out. So I'm really excited that I don't know yet how this is all going to fold out, but I'm excited as heck to go back and reread all these To me, this is I DW Star Trek at its best. I was really really engineered and engaged by this. I'm giving it a ten because I just loved it. Well. I gotta say, Paul, you. Look at our Look at that art, Uncle Jim. That's I mean, it's wonderful. So bringing back Borg Jardi as we called her I was great.

And look at that do you guys recognize that clean out on the screen right there? That's a Discovery claimant, which I thought was awesome that they actually showed us a Discovery clean out. But back to the story. The reason why I didn't read this when it first came out is the whole Captain Kirk angle. I'm like, do we need it? What could Kirk possibly bring to this? He's an ancient character. Do we really need him? And I thought, just a bunch of fans service, So I'm kind of leary about the Kirk thing. But other than that, I thought the artwork was great. It was your typical I d W quality, as you can see here on the screen. The references were great, star Trek five awesome, you know, all the references to Star Trek for cardboard in particular. This is what IDW does best, is right here.

I may hate it, but I'm really intrigued by how the setup was delivered, the fact that you know, the board comes back and she's has for some mysterious purpose, very terminator there with the way he's resurrecting right. It's just I was intrigued by it, even if it is a weird thing. We're go Kirk again, But I didn't get that feeling at all from this intro. I was really intrigued by it, So if you were intrigued by it, you know, be generous.

46:56 Jim Well, I mean if they mentioned him on to card, I mean they actually zoomed in on his casket, well not his casket his. But on this very same thing, Dave strim station. Yeah, yeah, wherever he was being stored. They made a point of showing him to us on the episode. So yeah, okay, but I'm honestly sick of her, I really I am. I want to see something different. But he did right in direct starts to five, and they did mention it in the issue. You know. All in all, I can't go with the ten, but I can go with an eight point five.

But good thinking back to the last time that we reviewed this, and we are not this particular comic, but the last comic that we had a Thalian in, and the integration of Atholian as the engineer of the ship here was really cool. But yeah, different characters. Okay, different because if I couldn't remember, but I do remember that that particular Tholian character joined Starfleet. Yep. Yeah, and I think it. I think it like it propagates a whole series of Tholians, you know, now serving in Starfleet. So I think this is just one of those people who are now serving in Starfleet as part of the Thillian Federation alliance.

So, as I was reading this, I was actually kind of intwigged with how the story prologue actually started out, and I was thinking, oh, yeah, cool, they're going to be bringing the going into the Federation, and all of a sudden, big boom happened. I was like, oh no, and then they just said it was that the whole Bone. And you guys know me, I'm not really too big on the whole Bone story plot, but I'm actually kind of digging this particular series. I've already read a couple of the other comics beyond one, so I actually got into the take of the story when it comes to what the explanation of how the Federation handled themselves after the buron. So to me, I kind of brought my score down because of the Bone. But then they brought in all these you know, the fan uh pleasing, uh noshalgic.

50:16 I guess you could call it, uh the idea of just, uh, what's going on lately with Star Trekt now, since we have a lot of things canceled and it sounds like there might not be any future Star Tract shows for a while, comics is really the only one that we can really kind of lean on at the moment. So to me, I'm just kind of like, yeah, this is this is a really good story. It's pretty interesting. The fact that they were talking about the Red Path. I can't remember what that comic book book was called, but I think Eric remembers, uh, the whole Red Path with that whole thing that was going on with the other comic books that they were talking about. Well, the Red Path from those comics was from back in the like uh you know, just post next generation. So the fact that they used the same term now in the thirty second century, I think is new.

Yeah, Dad, that's much going for it. But it's actually really intriguing, so we'll see what it goes.

I've been so busy I have been caught catching up on my comics series, so I'd forgotten what this one was about. So I just pulled it out and said, okay, I go with book one. It's like, okay, we're on board this ship. And I was a look confused at the beginning. It's like, okay, I've got a crew I don't recognize I thought the soling.

Now realizing always the engineer that makes sense was kind of reading and skimming at the same time and didn't really capture the whole story. But then as I read, and it's like, all of a sudden, it's like, okay, there's this big event the ship is destroyed, and then we get the. Title plate Last Starfier. It's like, okay, this reminds me of a TV episode where it's like okay, you get the prologue and the opener and it's like okay, I'm okay, what's going on with this story? And then we go to the transmission page where talked about what happened to all these ships, and it's like, oh, it's the burn. Now I understand what's going on. We're dealing with post burn. It's like, okay, I think that's a good spot to really discuss. As we say the Tholian. I think the Tholian was from Year four and that was the tos Era. But I like the idea of them bringing that Tholian type, that type of Tholian back because he used the same same drawing style from that series and that was I.

54:33 Like that series. So we get in discussing what we do and I thought, okay, transwarp drive interesting, and then we had this creature come down. It's like okay. In Green, it's like okay, this doesn't quite remind me of traditional Borg. And when I look at it, realized the face like, oh that's Agnes. Okay, we're actually going to tie this into Bercar season two because so much for card they kind of wanted to get they wrote it.

We're not quite at ten yet, but you've got my attention and I definitely will grab Since I've already got all the current issues in my library, I just need to get them. I'm going to go back and probably reread the series and see where the series takes is.

They wisely didn't give us a lot. Of I haven't gotten. Behind, I haven't gotten to Pericard season three. But uh, it's that that captain that is a combination of four different different aliens. But he's just got if I can, if I'm looking at the image of him, he's got the blue skin, but he's got the white hair. But he's got like this killer stashing going on. So, you know, very stylish. But I think I'm I I definitely need to buy the issues on Amazon or wherever because the interruptions with that yes again the inappropriate.

They're currently up to issue number six with this series, and it's such a good series that I really hope we do get a chance to review future issues because to me, this is just kind of the beginning of a really good story. And when it first started, I was a little taken aback because it reminded me a little bit too much of a not awesome novel written by William Shatner called The Return. And I don't know if anybody ever read The Return other than me, but essentially, the plot of the book is that the Borg and the Romulans team up to destroy the Federation, and they resurrect Kirk as their kind of like perfect weapon against the Federation.

1:03:44 So it's, you know, it's an interesting book that was written by Shatner as a result of the way that he died in Star Trek generations because he never liked the fact that he died on a bridge. And so when he got the you know, when he got the chance to like write this book book which then does also bring Card into it and like you know, does a cross generational thing, it was his kind of Okay, this is my answer to the terrible way that I had to go out in generations, and I'll write this terrible book instead. Anyway, right off the right off the Batman. I well, first of all, when I picked up this book, and this is one thing that you kind of get in the physical copies, right, the book was hefty, and it was a couple it's like a dollar more expensive than the other comics, and it's because it's a little bit longer, which I think is totally awesome, gives us a little bit more content. The art was something that I hadn't seen before. It has this real kind of like rough style to it that has these real thick, kind of dark lines. In a lot of ways, it kind of harkened back for me to some like old Todd McFarlane stuff back when he started Image Comics and was doing the Spawn comics and just use like really heavy dark lines to kind of depict like rough you know, alley ways or whatever. And of course we're in.

Yes, And so that's perfect for the story that we're telling her here, right, because we're we witness as Paul was saying, we witnessed the burn here, and then we see the aftermath of it. And I, you know, I knew the burn was bad. It didn't quite clock to me that ninety six percent of Starfleet was destroyed. So that was that was kind of intense. But the artist here is Adrian Bonilla, and when I looked them up, they had just a ton of stuff, a lot of like Doctor Strange comics and other stuff in their lexicon. So I think we're dealing with an artist here who has you know, been around the way, knows how to depict people, knows how.

Yeah, particularly the design of our of our of our good captain here, who has very kind of like gamor or flavorings to him, right with the pointy ears and and that kind of stuff. But uh, but the thing that nobody's talked about yet, which I think is so cool about him is his last name. It's Sato, right, so he presumably is a is an ancestor of Hoshi Sato, is my guess. So anyway, I love not that there's only one line of Sato's, and I want to be careful to you know, there's there are multiple lines of Sato's. They don't necessarily nothing Star Trek, right, but nothing accidental in Star Trek. So I just wanted to acknowledge that last name and the connection all the way back to Star Trek Enterprise and the inventor of the Universal Translator. So yeah, thank you very much for doing that. The introduction of Gerardi I thought, or borg YARDI, whatever we like to call her, I thought, I thought it was fantastic. I loved bringing her into it and the fact that she is kind of a cooperative now and not a collective I have. Unfortunately in this case read ahead.

I keep up with the Star Trek comics like if it's if it comes out, I'm reading it like within a couple of days of it coming out, So I've read all the way through issue number six, and I think as a result, I liked this issue even more having read ahead. So you guys have a lot to look forward to, because as we read future issues, I think you can go back and you can read this one and be like, oh man, that was actually really cool. Can I ask you a question without spoiling anything. Yes, do we find out why his first officer's name is Wowie? I will say there is. It's no spoiler to say we don't find out why his name is Wowie, but but we do get a little bit more Wowie, So that's good.

1:08:00 It was so there was such an odd like Normally I would find that kind of thing so tone deaf and glaring. I would just be like put off by it. But I could not find it in myself to get put off by anything in this comic. I just it was cool. I have a twin named Salie. Maybe why not? Yeah? So I loved the way that this whole comic sort of moved, you know the way that it had that kind of you guys have already talked about the sort of pre credit uh intro and then boom the ship blows up. I thought it was really clever to have the transporter buffer be the escape mechanism. You know, that feels very thirty second century to me, So I I totally dug on that. You get a couple of sides of Sato because you see him like captaining and his ship blowing up and stuff, and then you see him in the aftermath, much like Perk or Pike would sort of mope in the aftermath of a failure. I think we get that same thing with Sato here in this comic, which I really like, the kind of tos callback, you know, Ould School Marvel callback to that. So yeah, I'm I'm kind of with Paul Mann. I really like I read a lot of comics, and not every comic kind of starts out running from the get go, and to me, this one pushed all the buttons. It had fantastic art, it had really good writing, It had interesting ways of telling a story in an era that we

I will also say that it's not a spoiler to say that I think you guys are going to continue to like this series. It's the best series that's come out in Star Trek Comics in my opinion since the big crossover between the Star Trek Comics slash Defiant Comics where they were doing the Red Paths stuff and that sort of thing, which was also a fan tasting series. Uh so yeah, I pretty much perfect. I mean, I can't imagine a better first comic than this one. So I'm going to give it a ten. Wow.

Although d I mean that scene in the Terminator, you know where he uh he lands on Earth or whatever, because I saw that in the movie theater and it's like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the buff.

One thing that I think bears like for those people who are into Star Trek technology and stuff, there's one thing that comes up occasionally, and it comes up in this comic, and so I just want to touch on it real quick in case anybody listening to this podcast cares. So despite the fact that in the original series we had Star Trek three, where of course we explore the idea of transwarp and they go all colored and googly and time dilaty and that kind of stuff in that movie, that is a different type of transwarp from the transworp that we're talking about. When it comes to Borg transwarp, right tos transwarp was a way to like travel faster than warp could travel, but kind of in the same way within some sort of bubble within normal space. Borg transwarp is there are these conduits that exist all over the universe and we can use them to get places that we're going.

1:11:58 So anyway, well, I think that I think that's interesting, and I think there that's sort of I sort of believe that there's there's more to this universe than we have any clue. So if there are real Borg warp conduits. I would not be surprised at all, just saying mm hmmm. Yeah. When they were talking about the twins whip, I actually thought they were talking about the TST warp. I was like, didn't it also take that with them? But not to be not to be confused from Voyager and the slip stream. Slipstream, Yeah, also another way to travel outside and well, and they bring that up at the beginning of Discovery season three, which when you get there you'll see v but they talk about all of the alternative ways that the universe explored, traveling faster than light.
