Eric, take it away, all right, I'm gonna spin this globe over to our friends just across the pond in the UK and say welcome and thank you very much for listening to the podcast. To Carol Young, who sends us that lovely Union Jack as well as that livelong and prosper emoji, which I'm positive is what God Jim's attention.
7:59 Thank you Carol for reporting our podcast. We really appreciate it. Also saying hello this week to David vib I'm guessing that that's some sort of acronym. You are saying hello from Belgium and you're sending us that Belgian flag, So thank you very much for listening to our podcast, and kapla to you, sir. Also saying hello this week to Vanessa Madson, who is listening from New Zealand, way on almost the other side of the planet. Thank you, Vanessa for supporting our podcast and for being a friend of the show. And last but not least, on my list, I would like to say hello this week to Eric Streparo, who's saying hello to us from Italy, and Eric, you spell your name the correct way, sir. Thank you.
8:40 Charles who would you like to say hello to. I don't think Charles is not here. I will keep going. Charles would also like to say that he's welcoming and saying hello to top fan Mary Stephen, who is saying hello to us from the great state of Pennsylvania, one of them big ones out east and top fan status, of course, means that Mary interacts with us a ton on our Facebook page, and we always appreciate people who engage like stuff, give us thumbs ups, all that good stuff. It makes us feel like people care. So thank you. Mary. Also saying hello this week to Debbie Elmore Creek, who's saying hello to us from the great state of Arkansas. We don't get a lot of hellos from Arkansas, so Debbie, consider yourself one among a few.

And thanks for listening to Todd Allen from Mississippi. And next time to life, this is Dan Cio from Chicago. It's a explanation mark at the end, got really excited there. I guess I don't know, but anyway, Yeah, so thanks for listening. And next time my list is Matt Wall from Washington State. And last summer list is Laura Whaling William from Florida, USA. Paul, who's on your list?
10:26 Well, thank you, David, And you know, it's really good to be able to once in a while be reminded that there are folks who share our love of Star Trek all over the planet. Right. It's not just this American phenomenon by any means. People are listening to it in many languages all across the globe, and pretty much always have been. So in these kind of chaotic times that we find ourselves in, it's really comforting to me to see that there's folks all across the planet that we have a lot more in common with than you might think like top van Gloria Guidance from Dijon, France. No less Gloria Guidance. Now with that name, you would think that she was perhaps ship's councilor on the USS excaliburate perhaps, but it seems like that's somebody you go to for assistance and perspective at Gloria Guidance, but all the way from Dijon. So fantastic to hear from you, Gloria. Thanks for being a fan and for listening to our show. Also top fan status over there in Dublin, Ireland. Flag unfurled proudly is Rachel Carr's another top fan. Great to hear from you, Rachel, and I want now weird question to ask if we're watching next Gen in Ireland. Is it just the same audio or does everyone have Irish access? Question for the ages. I think Eric and I may have to debate this at some point, so that could be a forty five minutes right there, and I'm not sure, but let's head to the south of the Equator and head over to Brazil to Canaos, to Luis Fernando Lopez in Canoas, Brazil and
12:00 in Caracas Venezuela. We have our good friend Milagros Salazars, of course, meaning miraculous, which is a wonderful thing to be called so and it's miraculous. I think that we all come together here once a week to be reminded about what a hopeful and very entertaining universe we all get to share together thanks to our enthusiasm for star trek. Let's see who Uncle Jim is going to dig up from the battles of New Jersey or parts nearby. Jim, who do you have, sir? Well, first we want to swing out to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia and welcome v to the podcast. Welcome. I threw you on our our fan list before you became one of us, So welcome to the podcast. And there is so much that our fans shout outs are real people, because here's one of them right here. Welcome to the show.
12:55 That was scrolling along one late night and I saw your video wanting to have a female co host and to send a recording, and I forgot, promptly forgot. And then next week it came up again and said, oh I should do that, and here we are and here you are excellent. Yes, so I also want to say thank you and hello to Jamie L. Hare, who's listening to us in Tucson, Arizona. Next on my list we have Janice Wilcox who's in La Los Angeles, California. And last on my list is Norma Garza who's listening to us in Austin, Texas. If you guys would like to be mentioned in a future fan shout out, please head o our Facebook page. Look for to Livelong and prosper pinting to the top, tell us where you're from, leave lots of emojis. It gets my attention. And for those of you watching this video, you see all these great pictures flying by that David has assembled. These are all of our fans. If you send us your picture, we'll put your picture right up there.
13:57 And I just saw a V's picture. Well there were two. Yeah. The one was like super old back from nineteen eighty four and that was when I met Walter Kanig. So so you guys can be up there with V. Just send us your pictures and David will get them right up there on our fan shout out. All right, guys, you're ready to do some polls. This is going to be interesting, right, here. Okay, let's first play our polling song. Linn poland you know me like no win what you thought about the show when we try to share your opinions with all of our minions out there because.
14:49 They listen world, Why so tell us just what you think. Get together, we will alter Canara and romulin a. Okay, this is a loop. This is I think we're all gonna need some canar after this. This is absolutely going on here tonight, my lord. Okay. So normally I would say to David, hit the video, but we're not gonna do that tonight. There's no videos, although David did work hard. Oh no, we're gonna do it. We're gonna know, Jim, We're gonna do videos, but Paul and I are gonna do bad lip readings to the videos. It's gonna be great.
15:32 Oh okay, then I'll make sure you buddy, all. Right, David, well hit. You go first. You take the first character. Ready, it's the third video happens. I have been struck this chair for at least a week, and I'm really confused about this giant blob of protoplast. What are we gonna do with that? About being in this cage I'm not sure what to do with my captain. I mean not you're not captain yet, but you will be one day. Aliens don't have feelings. This is ridiculous. Why are we even wasting time here? We could be in this ship has a bar. What are we even doing down here? I'm just going to stand here and blink my eyes and pretend like I'm actually listening to her right now. I don't understand a word she's saying, but it seems like. Holding this canister of romulin ale right here in front of you, and I'm looking at you with love of my eyes and we're still talking about the rights of this being. It makes no sense to me. Oh, I can't even look at it. I can't even look at it.
16:22 Well, captain, I mean, I'm sorry, you're still not captain yet, but you will be one day. No, don't do that. Don't sprinkle. Oh my god, I can't believe you're sprinkling. I'm sprinkling some for my friends who've gone ahead. And you know who cares that? This click on is just off the board bow. That's it. I'm out here. Yeah, you're out of here. No, I'm out of here. I'm this thing. This is the same device that they used to get low cuts back in, wasn't it. Look that's this is old equipment. Or baby, we love you? Yes, into space even afford a photon torpedo case for this little guy. Yeah, I know, no torpedo two for you, ling, And I am for the Tartar grade lightning arounds.
17:07 I'm not here. I'm going to go show up in Pacific rim tree. See you that there we go? All right? That was our video that was from Discovery actually season one. That doing the video from my speakers and talk, I'm like, that guy's so confused. All right. So Eric, now that we saw the video, that was the question. Well, that of course was a video from the Star Trek Discovery episode Choose Your Pain. And in that episode, Burnham, realizing that these spoor jumps are killing the Tartar Grade, chooses to release it. That strands the ship in Klingon territory and it leaves it vulnerable to attack. Do you agree with her actions? And I am proud to say that ninety five percent of our poll responders said yes, they agree with Burnham's decision. What concerns me is that five percent of our responders said no, they don't agree, and so who are those people?
18:06 Yeah, that throws up sometimes with some questions. Those are the Trump people right there? I don't even really know, but it seems pretty logical, right, like that was a good decision because you know, genocide and killing things senselessly is bad. Right, That's that's agreed. Yes, definitely, that's what you jump in and take the we're gonna we're gonna throw your right to the walls. Sure, go first, all right, go first with what? Sorry? What if? Did you think Burnham did the right thing the wrong thing? Are you with dominions against dominions? Well, I have I hate hod Ment. I have not seen that episode, but it's one of those to me, it seems like it's one of the needs of the many?
18:54 Is that? Am I right on that? It's more like a a single creature is It's kind of like the episode of Voyager called Equinox where they're like, oh, yeah, like one of these situations where the creature is being harmed to make it better for other people. Yeah, which that's a that's yeah, that's that's terrible. But I mean they you know, she did what she thought was best for the for the creature. So, mh cool, All right, Paul, you want to go next? Yeah, I would agree. I think it's this is one of those, you know, more altruistic points of view what the Federation should be embodying. Right, It's just like, Okay, our own inconvenience is secondary to the you know, what you would call the civil rights of another you know entity, you know, basically another another being right that its rights matter, and that we don't have the right to go in and just selfishly, you know, colonialize our way through the galaxy at the expense of other life forms. Right, So it's kind of like it's a kind of a that you know, when it said it's best the Star Trek would always kind of remind us of so to me right in there with the same perspective from shows like Equinox that Eric was saying, or even going back to like Devil in the Dark, right that like, just because we don't understand something doesn't give it the right to malign or abuse it. So yeah, I would definitely say that. Yeah, I'm I'm with the majority on this, and the other five well, you know, sorry, Marjorie Taylor Green, who were you?
20:25 I don't even know. I don't even know you've got in here. He's under couch. Sorry, I love it. Well, you know, I'm with you, Paul. I was actually very disappointed that Sir rou was upset that burn What Burnam was doing, I think of all people should have was he really, I don't remember that? Well, this is one. This is one of those centers that were like somebody's thinking about the good of the ship, right, and that's like he's thinking, I'm taking care of the crew, and by launching this thing out into space, we can't take care of the crew because now the Cleons are going to comeat us. Right. Yeah, that's when Stammett stepped in and jammed his veins with the things there and he controlled but at the point, at that point in time, they didn't know that. So Saru was like, no, you need to keep that thing alive, and Burnham said up yours and let him go. So yeah, I went the minions on this one for sure.
21:23 So they never got to hang out and Locke antlers with the Klingons in this episode, then no, no. Because they have this opportunity and the vain action going on and they were out of there. So all right, God, what do you think, David, are you with the minions or against dominions? We lost? D he is, I don't say. Remember what the federation charter said, put good of all life, right, So yeah, I'm with the minions on this. I think they were a good idea to let go of life and just let him live. Although I didn't have one question. Did they know that it was alive when they launched that uh total grade? Or did they think it was dead?
22:09 They knew it was alive. That's why she dumped all the spores on it, because it eats the spores. Okay, go in the space. And she wasn't seasoning it for lunch. That looked pretty good, though, one. Can Charles hear us? Is Charles on? Now? I see his pictures? Is on? I see his picture? Can you hear us? Charles? Charles? Charles Charles Charles. Twice? If you're okay, Charles, David, he can't hear us? Okay, that's fine. Let's play the next video. I get the show on the road.
22:50 Okay, lot the buttons? Oh my god, guys, ready. For number two? Here we go. So as you could see right here, we're looking at a bunch of pictures of different tartar grades. And if I pointed this one and then I point at that one, you will see that clearly. I know exactly what I am. It's just unbelievable. And oh, sorry, were you listening say that out loud? I'm sorry, Yeah, you did say it out loud and we all heard it, and I'm really disappointed to you. Well, you know, it's trying to take you seriously. And that was so cool. That was perfect. That's perfect, all right. That clip, of course, was also from the Star Trek Discovery first season episode Choose Your Pain, but in this one we hear the first ever use of the F word in the franchise, and it's used by ensign Sylvia Tilley played by Mary Wiseman.
23:45 Did the use of profanity offend you? And I'm happy meaning fuck? Yeah, that's fun. Yeah, thank you, Paul. I like how you always make sure you clarify things. That's really I like all at the table. Absolutely, we want to make sure everybody's on the same page here. So thirteen percent of our responders said that that F bomb offended them, but a solid eighty seven percent of our responders said, no, that was that was that was appropriate. Man, that was a situation. And also, actually they didn't say this. I'm not putting words in their mouth. Sylvia Tilly is obviously coded as probably autistic or probably having at least some kind of thing that makes her special and actually gives her like superpowers brain wise, and it wouldn't be surprising to me if that was one of the reasons that they chose to make her the character that iterated that word for the first time.
24:43 So I personally am in the no category two. It didn't didn't really offend me. And since we've heard actually Jean Loup Picard say it too. Oh what he says it in card? It says it in a card. Yeah, all right, I gotta watch that. We well, actually it was Admiral what's her face that said it to one. Oh, that's right, I'm sorry. It was Admiral what's her face? Who she her? Hubris? Yes? Oh yeah, okay, Admiral what's her face? Famous in the Canons of I remember then later in the. One way or another said it's there all that. Were you totally offended and just shut it off and watch it?
25:29 Do we have to really ask if there was yeah, if there was like a. If there was a dashboard that showed like which tre experts were most likely to use profanity on a regular basis. I mean we would be like, wait, I was just like, you know, there's only a couple of words I haven't used. Really, I mean it's just for sake of course, of course. I mean it's ridiculous, you know. I would love to find out though, like the pole recipient's like, if there was a way to like, you know, parse the data by like the fifteen percent, Like what's their age demographic? Right, I'm guessing the probably the mostly and I mean I'm being very you know generalizing here is probably the oldest person on the show, which is I wrong, But I'm guessing the younger folks just another problem, right, And that's the old folks who are like you know, uh.
26:16 You know really really. The series, right, I mean like really, no one wouldn't related and start writ kind of me. Never would use it for salty language like that. I would be never do it, No. Prune use. Hey, that's a warrior's drink, war. The sun. That's perfect, that's perfect. But yeah, I mean, what the hell? And it's words, right, It's words. It's just you know that it was the way she said it and the way Stamit's reacted to it. That makes that scene at work, which we didn't get see in the video, but it was.
27:04 And that I just I missed the old Stamates. He was so uptight at first, right, and it was just he was just so funny, and he was just really really really updight, and he just sort of mellowed out a little bit. But I kind of it's fun to you see in his face in that clip, it's like, that's the old Stamates. It was just like completely like you know, woo, yeah, fun to look at, fun to look at. So yeah, I don't know problem with language. I'm not threatened. But no, it didn't bother me either. Of fact, we discussed it on the podcast. I thought it was done perfectly. What about you v No, it. Didn't bother me at all because I told you earlier about how why I love lower decks even though I want the words unbleeped. That's especially doctor Tanna says. But no, if it's if it is, you know, like you said, the way it was delivered and the reaction on the other person's face, then yeah, I think it's maybe the people that remind me of my parents that don't like the swearing, because that's that's not a good thing to do.
28:08 Oh yeah, I agree, how about you, David? Can you hear us? Oh yeah, I can hear you can hear me? Yes, okay, yeah. I grew up completely separate from everybody. I was taught to be offended by this, but overall, as I were growing up watching movies listening to other people say it, you know, in a way, I do like it when it bleeps out. I find it more funny. But you know that's a meame. But I mean, I'm not offended now. I probably would have been back in the day, but no, I grew up. I guess I'm a big boy now.
28:52 My beard fell off somehow, but you know I'm going to get back all right. Well, I guess that's it. And that's the name of our polls. Guys can go to our truck talking and beyond page I'm always putting polls up there. Make your opinion her, tune into the next show and see if people agreed with you. All Right, David, this we can do slides for it because there's no sound along with it, so we're gonna do lower Decks. Maybe let's see, we're gonna do Lower Decks. There it is. We're gonna do issue four and we're gonna have Paul catch us up on what's going on. Okay, friends, So we're doing issue for of the Lower Decks comics series from id W. We always like to give credit where credit was due. This one's written by Ryan North, by Jack Lawrence and the good folks there at id W who've been keeping track alive pretty seriously with their comic releases. There's some crazy, staticky loud noises.
29:48 Did anyone else hear that's? Wait? I heard it? Yeah, yeah, okay, all right, I'm going to soldier on as we go, so to speak. So anyhow, issue brief recap. The Soritos is continuing on in this story from what we had in the previous issue three. It's caught in some kind of expanding bubble universe, if you will, and there is a I would just say that if you're a fan of technobabble, this issue is for you, okay, because it is just exploding with technobabble in every frame of every page. They basically say that by pinching off a normal bubble of reality by generating a non propulsive warp field, and they're trapped in a new form of expanding space time, expanding away from the ship at the speed of light. And they can't move any faster than impulse engines. And I really need some of that Romulan blood one. So they send out a probe, right, and then suddenly Rutherford and Tendee are possessed by these non corporeal energy aliens, right, and they interpreted the probe as a weapon, and the detonation of warp cores is acts of hostility. They're very defensive of the critos.
31:03 Right. They didn't know that their universe's expansion was destroying our universe, right, I didn't realize that when I was mowing my lawn, I was killing all of your tools. So, and the one funny bit of sticking here is the aliens keep referring to everybody as babes. Right, hey, babes, like that's their name. You know. Sorry, it didn't mean to blow up your ship, babes, you know, which is kind of fun. Right, And so as a gesture of goodwill, the aliens moved Rutherford in Tendee's minds into the main computer, which they seem to really enjoy. The Aliens feel very threatened by Captain Freeman's earlier comments about the fleet arriving and popping their expanding universe in order to save the Federation. So a lot of mistrust there, and so the Aliens feel compelled to make their universe expand even faster in order to survive over there. Back in the main computer computer Rutherford and Tendee try to convince the Aliens to stabilize their universe and stop its expansions so both universes could peacefully coexist.
32:06 And at this point, there's a pretty funny joke about Star Trek Generations about how Captain Kirk died and they're saying, one of our most celebrated captains famously didn't even believe in the no in scenario. His name was Kirk, and he died from falling off a random bridge, but up until that point he had an amazing street So it's just like again, just the uh, the ignom of that decision there, Writers of Generations. Then the Aliens take over all of the arrest of the entire group, and Computer Rutherford and Computer Tende try various different anesthazine gases to try to knock everybody out so they could be gain control, but all of the safety subroutines won't allow them to work, so instead they turn into Rutherford and tend shaped force fields, if you will, right, each holding a bunch of items together, like a crazy collage of things you would scrape off the top of your desk. Very weird and surreal looking and goofy, and it's kind of amusing. But the Aliens disable those force fields that were holding everything together, so you can see this is a real straight reactive plot going on here. BROTHERHD and Teddy realized that using the warp engines to speed up the expansion of their universe is funneling all that energy into empty space, which could push the aliens universe up to its old vacuum threshold our universe, which would collapse their universe. So much techno babble in this issue it was just driving me crazy, I have to say. Then the universe appears to collapse
33:39 and the Aliens disinhabit the crew and seemingly they're vanquished and they're gone and they're dead, and then there's a wrap up scene in the mess hall bemoaning the inescapable randomness of death, which seems like it's something that albre Camu might have written. And then Tendy takes the gang to the Hola Deck for an escape to a beach on a Ryan that she always used to go to when she was sad not all of us get to see tomorrow? Or is an Oriyan fatalist saying that Tendy tries to put a hopeful spin on So, uh, we're going to talk about this one before we do the summary for the next one, right, Yes, we want to tell one of the great perfect silence equals concerned. So for me, this issue for was not my favorite. I generally enjoy these, uh these connects a fair amount, right, enjoying Lower Decks, but this one just didn't really have a really good story. And this is like, you know, lurching out of the previous issues with this whole Pocket universe thing, and I just don't think it was very clever. Frankly, It's just like, especially if something's trying to be funny, if Lower Decks is like could be clever, and this just seemed like it was just regurgitating a whole lot of techno babble and there's no real surprises. It didn't end well, you know, there was really know, a clever solution to things. It's it's like, okay, so we're gonna kill the aliens to save ourselves and then go the hol of deck and say crazy shit, and it's like, oh okay. Yeah. So to me it was, you know,
35:11 and it had the misfortune of me reading it right prior to reading the next issue, which we'll talk about in a bit, which I enjoyed much much more so. And this one just really paled in comparison for me. If I was giving it a letter grade, I'd probably be generous and give it a five. But not great stough, certainly not good writing, very forgettable for me. Oh all right, well Paul gives it a five. How about you, David? What did you think? Yeah? I am in Yeah, I agree with all this. This particular issue was not my favorite. I mean, I honestly thought they were going to be continuing from the last comic book, which I know they kind of did because they went through that black hole of some sort.
35:59 But this year were alternate Universe, be honest, and I don't know, it just didn't pique my interest. I was just kind of falling asleep almost and I had to read back on some of the words because you know, I'm not much of a comic reader myself, and I accidentally reading somebody else's line before the other, so you know, it's kind of up and down for me. But uh yeah, I don't know. Just this episode of episode of the comic book, this didn't really it didn't connect with me. So to me, I'm I'm literally gonna give this a three.
36:39 Okay, a five and a three? Uh, Eric, what do you think you're gonna You're gonna pull us out of the out of the gutter here or what? No pressure, No pressure at all. I'm gonna pull us up a little bit. I will say that I can't disagree that this wasn't my favorite issue. I think the like three issues of this, we're really killing it. And I say this every time we review a Lower Dex comic that I love Ryan North as a as a writer. I think he's really clever, and I love the little subtitles down at the bottom or the footnotes down at the bottom, and they always offer a little bit of a side, almost non related but sometimes related stuff that is clever and funny. There's some wording in here, like them when they become their little avatar sells talking about meatthands and just like fun little stuff like that. But generally speaking, there's not like a big story being told, and this is kind of the end of our first arc. I think. I think this one actually says end on the very last page, so it's kind of like this story happens and then the next story sort of begins. So generally speaking, I mean, I'm still loving the idea of having a lower dex comic because I really do miss the show and I enjoy the fact that we at least get to continue on adventures with these with these guys. Right now, this wasn't the best one that we've seen. I think, I think it's better than a three or five. I'd probably give it like a like a six point five, but but it's not one that I'm going to go back
38:10 and kind of like read over and over again. Personally, I'm kind of in the same book as Paul, where I think the next one is really particularly good. But yeah, that's my take on it, all right. Vre okay, honest, all right, no pressure, all right, So I'm gonna have to turn on the light so I can read my notes it's getting dark in my little so all right, so this was actually my very first venture into the comic. So I just love the whole setup. Like on the first page you got that l cars display and Badgie is insulting you know, us, calling us miserable humans. The comments at the bottom, that's just that's hilarious.
38:58 And I think what jumped out at me was billips to Bridge were not dead and said we noticed billups much obliged as always. Uh so that and all the noises, the zach and the crack and then he says at the bottom, pencil in your own noises, the you know, the the hip noises. Let's see what else were talking about earlier, the warf corn the like they did. I think, well, it was really interesting. Well I love that they call them babes because that's to me, that's an improvement from what was it the next gen when uh those I'm trying to remember which episode where we call you know, mostly bag or bags of ugly bags of mostly water. So, you know, for that, babes is definitely an improvement. I know that Rutherford seemed like he really enjoyed being in the computer. That's, you know, because he's like half cybernetic.
40:05 So but then later on he learns that it's not as great as he thought it was. Of course, I just I had to laugh out loud at the Kirk with his no wind scenario, you know, died falling off a random bridge up till then he had an amazing streak going on. I don't know why, because I hated. I hated that ending in generations I did. That was not the ending that Kirk deserved. So I'll just say that, let's see what else. So they're trying to uh put everybody to sleep. That doesn't work the safety protocols. But the thing that really got me because this has happened before, and it was in a DS nine episode where they were too eager not to trust one another. They didn't want to ensure that they could work together and that they would all survive. So that's that distrust in one another.
41:13 And at the very end, I think it was sweet because I love Tendy that she was trying to help everybody feel better by taking them to her holiday program and say, not all of us get to see tomorrow, but all of us did get to see today. That was really good. Nice, So I would give it since it's my first one, I will give it a I'll do a six point five. How about that? All right? Excellent? Well, you guys pretty much touched on everything. I still like the little blurby things at the bottom of the page. I enjoy reading those. I did like the Badgie introduction on the first page and the Kirk falling off a random bridge. Just so, yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna go with you, guys. I'm gonna go with just because I know Paul loves his decimals, So I can't go with a six point five because everybody else did.
42:12 So I'm gonna go with a six point four or five just to be different, because that's. The way I am bringing it into the hundreds, bringing it into. The hundreds, just just for Paul, because oh you're different, all right, different? All right. So that wraps up our review of Lower Decks issue number four, and now we're going to roll into issue number five. The mic is yours, Paul. Thank you so much. Issue five a delightful return to form for the comics here, also written by Ryan North and by Jack Lawrence. Again, this one is just so much more inventive and clever and fun and in the best spirit of having good connectivity with other pieces of star Trek, which is, you know what lower Decks when it's doing really well, does beautifully. So first of all, the Critos is docked in an orbital array getting a Baryon sweep, and you have to go all the way back to Next Generation season six, episode eighteen, an episode called Starship Mine that was basically like the diehard of Next Generation, if you will, of Captain Picard trying to prevent the ship from being stolen while he's wearing a leaveless shirt to look muscular. Right, So Barryon sweep right, eliminating these particles that accumulate as a side effective war of travel. That is your educational moment for this episode.
43:36 So there you are. Anyhow, so they're all given shortlyave on this planet while the Burions weave is happening. But Marin is very suspicious of the signs pointing to a senior staff only reception and she's like, something's going on there, and so she sneaks into it and she hides underneath a banquet table to eavesdrop, and she finds out that this reception is actually a briefing from the depart Apartment of Temporal Investigations right, being led by two agents, Dulmer and Luxley, which is the most flagrant X files anagram I've ever recountered, But there you go. I got a nice little tip of that there and definitely done.
44:17 So. The Temporal Investigations team is detected that our shared history is changing across the Federation, and I'm not really sure what that means yet, but they're very concerned about it, and so rather than send some big high profileship to investigate, and they chose the Sorito's crew because no one would ever suspect or miss lowly California class starship. Yet even after that explanation, curiously they don't take the Soritos. They assigned the bridge officers and reassign them to some old Food class ship, the USS Nemo, to take it back in time. And in this issue we do not see that ship yet, so we don't really have a really clear picture of what that looks like. I'm sure Charles is frantically googling Freedom class ships right now as we speak to get a clear picture there. But they're going to go back in time, right. Meanwhile, the lower deckers are watching the most awesome Jim centric puppet show that ever was created, a love letter to Star Trek five with puppets featuring the magical line Shaka Revent. And I just know that Jim was loving every moment of this.
45:25 So I never thought I'd say that there was a Star Trek five puppet show, but we have seen it, Jim. I can't wait to hear your thoughts. Mariner bursts in in well, the lower deckers are enjoying this magical entertainment. She says, we need to get back to the soritos, at least the part of it's clear the Baryon suite and fills everyone in on what she's heard. Right, So Tendy whips out these anti tachy On field emitters to protect everyone from many changes to the timeline. And I love Ruth offrd's line. He's like, once it done, an emotional problem is solved by a neat gadget it very very RUTHI bird right, just again, when the show is commenting on all of the tropes that Startrek frequently does, do, I think that's when it's and it's most entertaining. So I thought that was great. So then these different timelines start emerging that everyone has to sort of contend with, even though they're protected by these little anti tachy on field emitters, but still they have to navigate the different changes when they occur. So, first of all, this timeline emerges where first sash wearing energy whip cracking season one, next Gen Frengi have commandeered the soritos, right, and it's hilarious to see those What are that's our for? You'll never forget your first Ferengi apparently, but it's great. And so they've comminated, and then they start talking and Mariner and Boemler, this is really great. They fesce up to their whole portal misadventure on Chrolmouth B that we saw
46:57 on Strange New Worlds in that episode, because that's what they're referencing to, that whole Strange New World's crossover where we had live action versions of Manner and Boriemler, which is I think one of the best episodes Strange in the World has ever done, frankly, and so it's really cool to hear that reference here in the creative way. So they decide that they will go to Krollmouth B. But then the timeline changes in rapid succession to like, first of all, a Romulan and Borg timeline, and so the idea of romulin Borgs is pretty terrifying and pretty fun, and so they decide to go there. But then the timeline changes again and they realize that they're gonna need heronium, which we remember from that Strange in World's episode, to operate the portal. But it's a rare metal, nobody's really seen it for years, so they decide to just wait and cycle through all of these different timeline changes until they can find a timeline where they can actually detect heronium.
47:48 So long winded, but you know, reasonable plant and so there are a whole slew of different timeline shifts. We get the bella Ox mix Iotian gangsters, we get thes, we get the herogion is depicted on the cover, and then they finally in the midst of their journey to Krolmouth B but then the timeline changes again and we see a bunch of unconscious Zindy But good news, friends, there is heronium in the Zindy's uniforms, and so they are able to get all that for what they need, and they're just about to head down to use the portal when Vendreans show up for no real clear reason other than for Marina to beat the crap out of them.
48:30 That's the one thing, is. Just pat them up, you Venorans, for really no reason I could understand, except I think they like drawn Vendorians. But so they go down to the Planet Service and they reach the portal and the portal now has a new interface, so they can talk to it, and they're not really sure. The portal asks them where should we go? And they don't really know. They don't really know where to go, and so they say, just send us to someplace where we can have the greatest effect, and so that's where the portal sends them, right, and they sent through to some other time and space, and they're on the surface of some large vehicle and they're trying to figure out what it is and Wemmler leans over the edge of it to see if he can read any signage, and we realized in the last frame that they are on the deck of the Titanic, and that is how the issue ends. So this was just a breath of fresh air. It was fun, it was clever, It was actually funny throughout, which I think is really great. Half the fun being in terms of dialogue, and half of it from great visual gags like the season one for RENGI right, which were just ridiculous. So I thought this was clever, and it moved a really good clip, and there was really not a lot that was just annoying about it, right, And so for me, this is a lower decks comic when the pistons are firing and it's good storytelling and you have affection for it, and I thought it was done in a really interesting way. I wouldn't say it's all time classic status, but I would
50:00 certainly give it a nine. Absolutely, But I think it was really inventive and just exactly the kind of thing we needed to wash the taste of issue four out amendmenton. So Issue five a winner, friends, and it made me look forward to reading issue six, which is what your issue should do to propel you in there and help increase your sales and all those So this was a treat. Really enjoyed it very very much, So that's me I would give it a nine. A nine from Paul, Well, Victoria, we'll let you jump in after Paul and follow up the nine, So the mic is yours? All right? Yes? Well, I enjoyed it very much, being only my second issue that I've read, I did love. I just laughed out loud at the anagrams of Maulder and Scully with the time the temporal agents, because they really don't have a sense of humor. And that was something that was mentioned that they really need to have, you know, a little more kindness because they have all the time in the world to be kind, but they don't really have a lot of that. I think, what let's see, Sorry, I'm trying to read my notes here. When they had the Borg invasion with the the Romulan Borgs, I really wanted to lend to say the ship is outdated and smells like borg but she didn't.
51:31 Uh. And oh, I was going to say with it with the Zindy when they have their uniforms that that have that essential element, so they make it up. So is the ship full of naked Zindy or what I did? I did? It didn't That's what I wanted. They say their uniforms, they don't you know, what would. They do with you? Just you have to buy the less family friendly issue. But that's what I was yeah. Oh. And then then at the very end when they're on this this old steamship and you know, they're saying, oh it's this is some enormous, colossal, gargantuan and then of course Titanic that was that was a boom moment for me.
52:17 So I'm expecting Boemler and I think it. I think it gives a preview where he's at the front of the ship saying I'm King of the world, like they did in the movie, you know with Rose and Jack. Yeah, yep, So I would give it. I would give it a nine as well. I thought it was great. I mine, Well, what do you think, Eric, we got two nines? Oh man, this was a great issue. Uh yeah. I mean I can't remember who says it, but there's that line about second contact missions being where the juicy stuff is and don't even get me started on third contact.
53:00 It just like really cracks me up. I love that. There was the moment where they were the temporal Investigation guys were talking about high profile Starfleet ships and they said the proto star and I mean, great reference back to one of our favorite shows that's no longer with us. But I wouldn't call the Protostar high profile ships. So I thought that was kind of funny too, because it's always really funny when they say things that aren't necessarily true. Boimler wasn't sure whether his hair is naturally purple or whether he dies it, and that that if you read the little note at the bottom of that page, it says something about how that even deepens the mystery, so just totally crack me up. Of course, we already talked about the Farrengi and many of the other things, the Star Trek five references and stuff, so I'm with you, guys, man.
53:52 I thought this one was hitting on all cylinders. It was funny. I actually read the issue twice back to back, just like finished it, and I was like, that was so good, I'm gonna go back. I could read it again. I don't think the herosions really looked like herogions. I'm not really sure if that was a color issue or if it was just like the drawing wasn't quite right of them. But that's literally my only complaint about the thing. So I I give issue five a nine myself as well. All right, well we're rolling, we're rolling, David, what do you think you got nine. This one was, in particular one of my favorites out of all of the Lower Deck comics, and the humor that they put into it, where it's just just it just kept going. It was like a roller coaster ride, you know, you did if you get off your fall and what not, But it was just to me. I like the a lot of the humor. Let's if I can remember some of them, like the first uh shut of time difference that they experience were from the IONI and I think they were called and and then you can see boy log in the total of going oh thanks you so just a lot of different little things.
55:09 Of course I had to add the picture in here for Jim, you know, she's always been talking about it. But I was just, oh man, this whole comic was. I actually could not wait to read number six. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time, but I will eventually. And if we are continuing the Lower Decks, yes, it would be really fun to get into. So yeah, a lot of these different pictures that they showed up and Eric you mentioned like the Herozion didn't look like them. I actually thought they kind of did do a pretty good job, but they were only in like a couple of frames before they disappeared, and you know whatnot but yeah, I really enjoy addition, I'm gonna actually give this a nine point five.
56:05 Nine point five, So we have a nine and nine and nine and nine point five. Guys, you know where I'm going with this. You already know that's that would be classic Jim Well. I was gonna start. I was gonna start with feel like. Star Trek I just like Star Trek Transporters. I didn't like it. I was gonna start with a five different just because of Star Trek five, and bumped that right up from there. But I got to say that this this one felt the most like I was watching a Lower Decks episode. It was firing on all burners, all the references were great, Everything just flowed perfectly like it usually does on the show.
56:49 And when I got to the what does God need with a starship? I lost it. That's all I needed right there. And so yeah, I'm going with a ten point ten on this one. End point one. Baby, I'm going off the chart because anybody that references Star Trek five, I don't need to go any more than that. So I'm going to go with a ten point one on this issue. I highly recommend it. It was. Just it was pure joy to read it, really was. I read it in their voices, I you know, like, and that's how I know that they're doing it right. Like the last one not so much. I was slogging through it, but this one I could hear their voices saying the lines, you know, especially the Star Trek five reference.
57:34 So ten point one from me on that one. So guys, that's our lower decks. Anybody want to add anything before we move. On to our Star Trek word if I could. I think in the very beginning, wasn't there In one of the very beginning there was the somebody was holding a dog and I swear it was the dog with the unhorned that is from the original series. So I noticed that, Yes, yeah. And then in that Puppet show it cracked me up when the Spock puppet was beating up the God puppet.
58:20 I don't, yeah, I just wasn't expecting that. And then last, but not least, the whole I've heard I've seen armand Shimmerman talk several times about because he was in that awful TNG with those those terrible uh FRANGI and that was his goal to sort of atone for that when he was Quark in d S nine, because he wanted to make up for the horrible FRANGI yeah, it's a hume on. Thank god we never saw them again.
59:00 I know. Oh yeah, yeah, you clothe your females inviting others to unclothe them. Yep, that was the FRINGI al right, guys, Well that wraps up our Lower Decks Issue four and five review for Comic Corner. And now it's time for our Star Trek Birthdays and let's see how this goes. I'm almost afraid to push the button. Hm.
59:46 That was not a Cleon song. What what? What? Okay? At least we're consistent. It's David's gremlins if they've moved in. All right, guys, we do our Star Trek birthdays and you can find the birthdays listen about our Trek Talking and Beyond page and we always start off our Star Trek Birthdays sadly enough, remembering those who are no longer with us, and for that we turned. To Eric, Yeah, Jim. This week we're going to remember four members of our Star Trek community who have gone before us. The first is actor Patrick Horgan. The actor from Nottingham, England, who appeared as Enegg in the original series second season episode Patterns of Force. He was best known for his affinity with words of art, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or more specifically Sherlock Holmes, and he played the Great Detective several times on stage, notably in nineteen seventy five and nineteen ninety, as well as providing the character's voice on two audio recordings for The Blind. He of course did many many television guest roles and was maybe as well best known for his four year stint portraying doctor John Morrison on the soap opera The Doctors from nineteen seventy through nineteen seventy four. Had a few feature films along the way, most notable Lee Zelig from nineteen eighty three as the narrator.
1:01:04 He also appeared in The Thomas Crown Affair from nineteen sixty eight. Happy Birthday to Patrick Horgan lost at the ripe old age of ninety two years old. Happy Birthday as well to Sarah Marshall, the actress who played doctor Janet Wallace in the original series second season episode The Deadly Years. She of course is the only daughter of the British film and theater legendary stars Herbert Marshall and Edna Best. She made a number of television guest appearances throughout the fifties and sixties, but never appearing in more than one or three episodes or so in each series. She became known for playing Agnes Stewart in The Long Hot Summer from nineteen fifty eight, and was nominated for Broadway's nineteen sixty Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actress for Goodbye Charlie. After a thirteen year hiatus from taking a break from acting, Marshall return for one final film role. She played the pivot role of Missus Weston in twenty twelve's Bad Blood and Unfortunately We lost her to stomach cancer, a long, hard battle that she fought for a very long time. Lost her back in twenty fourteen at the age of eighty years old. Happy birthday to Sarah Marshall. Happy birthday as well to Natalie Norwick, the actress who played Martha Layton in the TOS first season episode The Conscience of the King. Natalie Norwick was born in nineteen twenty three in the Bronx and she's perhaps best known for playing Josette Dupree Collins on the television series Dark Shadows from nineteen sixty six through nineteen
1:02:38 sixty seven, a real classic as far as I'm concerned. She also appeared in such series as Perry Mason, seven episodes of Have Gun Will Travel, which of course was a written by Gene Rod Murray, Shenanigan's Thing, and Starsky and Hutch, which I know that Jim is a big fan of, and had roles in the film's twenty three Paces to Baker Street from nineteen fifty six and nineteen fifty seven's Hidden Fear, Happy Birthday to Natalie Norwick. And last but not least, for our remembrances, we remember Kevin Conway, the actor who played Els That's Right in Star Trek The Next Generation six se is an episode Rightful Air.
1:03:18 You know, Kevin didn't decide to pursue a career in acting until he was twenty four years old. Before that, he worked as an IBM sales analyst. In nineteen eighty he also starred as doctor William Haber alongside Bruce Davidson in the made for television movie adaptation of Ursula. Kyle Gwin's science fiction novel The Lave of Heaven, which is a fantastic book if you have not read that. I personally think every single person should read every single one of her books, but that's just me. Conway appeared as himself and the Earl of Hastings in al Pacino's nineteen ninety six documentary Looking for Richard. He was an actor, but he was also a director, known for movies like nineteen ninety three's Gettysburg, two thousand's Thirteen Days and two thousand and six Is Invincible. Not a lot of people know he was actually he actually himself turned down the role of Fiodin in the Lord of the Rings movies so that he could reprise the role of Buster Kilrain in Gods and Generals from two thousand and three. Of course, that role eventually went to Bernard Hill instead. Conway did have a reoccurring role as Seamus O'Reilly in the HBO series OZ, and also provided the control voice for the nineteen ninety five to two thousand and two revival of The Outer Limits, a role that he took from Vic Perrin.
1:04:39 Kevin Conway I think one of the classic faces of Star Trek and I love how we've seen Kalos reappear in a lot of the Star Trek comics as of late, so we get to re see your face every once in a while. Kevin Conway, albeit drawn and not live. We lost you back in twenty twenty at the age of seventy seven years old. Happy birthday to Kevin Conway. Well, Charles is not with us, Eric, so v would you like to take over for Charles or do you want Eric to continue? Yeah? No, I can, That's fine. Yeah so. Alex henfel Off born May twenty third, nineteen forty two the actor who played doctor Nichols in Star Trek for the Voyage Home. Ray Burke born May twenty seventh, nineteen forty three. The actor who portrayed Wren in DNG first season episode Haven and a sona Doctor. Ooh, that was where they got their faces stretched. I think Star Trek Insurrection.
1:05:45 Jack mcbraer born May twenty seventh, nineteen seventy three singer and comedian who voiced Badgie in the Lower Decks episodes and Nobody Can do Evil more than Let's See. He was in the Lower Decks episode's terminal provocations No small parts. A few Badgies More. He also voiced Gujie and Logic Key and we have Melissa Young born May twenty ninth, nineteen sixty seven, played Caprice in the DS nine fourth season episode Our Man Besher. So happy birthday to all of those lovely people.
1:06:30 And with that, it's time for Paul to jump in. Well done, thee Well done indeed, So we have more birthday still to come here. First of all, let's say happy birthday to Yadira Helena Guevara, actress who portrayed May Honey Ika Haley Capol in Short Trek's episode Runaway and Discovery second season episodes Such Sweet Sorrow and Such Sweet Sorrow Part two. Happy Birthday and Excited to be Able to Lose are amongst us. Dame Joan Collins, legendary English actress who played Edith Keeler in the original series first season episode The City on the Edge of Forever, probably one of the all time greatest hours of television we will ever see, and it's science fiction and it's from Harlan Ellison and it's just a benchmark. What a great piece of writing, and she is definitely embodied that role so well. Easy to believe that somebody you would be heartbroken over if you had to let her go in the manner that the Jim Kirk does so phenomenal work and a screen luminary to be sure, and what a legend.
1:07:44 So John Collins still out there. Happy birthday, friend, Great to see you out there, and happy birthday. Happy birthday to Michael Benyar, actor who played Seveth in the Strange New World second season episode Charades. Happy birth to the legendary Lee Merryweather Okay, actress who we acknowledge here for her turn as l Sira in the original series third season episode That which survives no depiction ever in Hollywood has ever made a woman look thinner than in that particular episode where she becomes a vertical line and just disappears and for you to tend tomato, right, I mean, she's just and she kind of made it.
1:08:29 Uh. It was a really interesting way if she performed, because she's basically like in the depiction of a machine, right, she's kind of like like a projection like from like a kin to like Landrew. But she really made it without doing anything really like you know, scenery chewing. She conveyed a very disturbing kind of maniacal, defensive presence of evil. I thought it's a really good performance. It's really interesting. I mean total idream of Genie costume. I mean, I think it is the I dream of Genie costumes. It's like crazy, but a great episode. I think underrated, you know, at there's a lot of third season episodes. So Lee Mayweather also, of course, is just a huge list of credits in her career. But was when they made a feature film out of the Batman anime, the sixties classic Batman, you know, sixty six Batman TV series, Lee Merriweather stepped in and played Catwoman because of course Julie Numar and Earth the Kid played but a ten times the movie, Lee Mayweather stepped in and a great job, so really really famous.
1:09:36 Uckily, it wasn't taken down by shark repellent right right with. Bat shark repellent so on the Penguin submarine. So it's it's it's really bad ideas in that movie, despite the fact that the show was great, and you know, I'm sorry they use a clip from that movie in like thirty episodes or whatever. But when they go running down that dock and jump into bat boat, it's the coolest goddamn thing ever. Its looks so exciting. Just remember as a kid so much. It was just the best, really really fun. I'm glad that those have all been restored. You can watch them. It's super super fun. Birthday Lean Marray Weather and finally for me, he was saying happy birthday to American actress Julie Cobb, who played Leslie Thompson, credited as Yeoman the ill fated Leslie Thompson in second season episode by any Other Name. Really kind of a sad end to this character and pretty brutal, I mean, frankly, considering how people would usually meet their end, I would say that she should have an important footnote in Star Trek because I think what happened to this character is one of the most brutally.
1:10:50 Just harsh. Deaths. I think it's all of Star Trek. It's it's grim and this is an extremely underrated episode. I think it's one of the best episodes of all Star Drag frankly, because it really shows what it would probably be like if you were dealing with like aliens who had no familiarity with human emotions and would at first be terrifying, but then how could you use your emotions their emotions against them. So it's a tremendous piece of writing. If you haven't watched it in a while, I highly recommend by any other name. It's absolutely spectacular. So and Julie Cobb wonderful presence in the opening scenes of that particular episode.
1:11:30 So a lot of cool people have in May birthdays. And I think there's still more to come. As we spin this flaming candle over to Uncle Jim. It's always saves the Klingons for last. I don't have any Lingons, but I have some good ones on my list. But I just want to say that we did an outstanding job pressed it action that quick, right on the spot. It did an outstanding job for Charles so oh and. I will can I say that I am I am a May baby as well. My birthday was on the first. But you know I'm. Got to sing and cling on.
1:12:12 Yeah, yeah, don't actually sing birthday songs. One another, no, No, I'm just just but somebody translated that that's what I love, you know, the happy birthday. But now this has been I have just had a blast technical issues and all, and I just look forward to hope you want to keep me on and you know I'll be happy to play along with your Shenanigans anytime. Excellent. Well, wrapping up our birthdays, I only have three one, two, three, but there's some pretty good ones here. First, uh, sticking with our how many spots have there been, Eric, there's been a lot of spots. We want to say Happy birthday and live long and prosper to Jacob Coogan, who played Young Spock in two thousand and nine JJ Abrams Star Trek. He's an American actor of Russian Jewish ancestry, and there he is on the screen. Happy birthday to Jacob.
1:13:17 Funny story about Jacob. He wasn't invited to the premiere of Star Trek two thousand and nine. He hitched a ride with Zachary Quinto and there's a picture of him with Zachary at the premiere. So happy birthday to Jacob. Now, hopefully you guys all watch the short Treks and if you did, then you know that tribles. What the tribles taste like if you shave them down, Eric. They taste like scallops, like a's right, and. Would taste like chicken, Yeah, you would say. Slightly. Year if you watch the Short Treks episode The Trouble with Edward, then you would know why tribles multiply and who caused that. And so we want to say happy birthday to h John Benjamin. He's the American actor who appeared as Edward Lark in Star Trek Short Treks episode The Trouble with Edward. He's an idiot. In that episode, he injects his own DNA into the tribles and look what happens.
1:14:28 Man. Yeah, why there is Danny Aaron is underwear in the ships. If you want to find out why, it only takes like eleven minutes, because. That's okay, all right, I will. I will probably regret it, but I will. That's a. Theory. It's a fun one. And I saved this guy for last. He's not a Klingon, but I think he's one of the highlights of Star Truk Discovery. I think his relationship with Michael Burnham is one of my best. For me, I think it rivals the Kirk and Spock. I think it might surpass Kirk and Spock for me. We want to say Happy birthday to Doug Jones, the actor who played saruin Star Trek Discovery. And the short Treks episode The Brightest Star. But my god, Paul, what hasn't Doug Jones been in? My God? He's been well, he was a silver Surfer.
1:15:29 He practically lives at Guermo del Toro's house. I mean, I mean, he's been in so many garam. He was Billy Butcherson in hocus Pocus. That's where I first saw him, and he really but he's like, yeah, and he really had moths in his mouth when they you know, when he's he's a corpse and he spits those moths out. Those are real moths. It's like, I don't know how he did that. Yeah, going way back to Hellboy, the early movies, right, he was Ape Sapien, Right, and then went on to play a very similar aquatic character in Shape of Water a lot. I mean, but it's just if you need somebody who can do you know, physicality, right, it can play.
1:16:12 He's a very very extremely thin individual. Right. Had the good fortune of going to a panel at the last Real City Comic Con here in Portland last year, and it was Doug Jones with Jason Isaacs together, right, and they're just so funny. I mean, they were just amazing together, right, they had so many good stories and Doug dun'ts just He's just great. I mean he's super. I mean the dedication it takes just for a series. Okay, it's one thing to do a picture, right, but to do a series and wear that much makeup all the time as elaborate as the Rows makeup incredible. So a legendary individual. Hell of a nice person too.
1:16:53 And he gives great hugs. By the way, if you meet him at a convention and you go up and say hello, he'll give you a hug. He's a really great guy who loves the fans. I ran into him at Trek Long Island, their first convention. Uh he was great. All right. That wraps up our Star Trek birthdays and now it's time for some Star Trek news. Means we have to play. We got to work on this intro Eric for now, period. I got some ideas in the hopper. All right, let's see if it'll play once. Maybe do you think let's try it or at all? Or maybe not. I already won message from Starfleet coming in on secure channel incoming transmission enter authorization code, command codes verified, define parameters of program level nine authorization required specifying parameters. Transfer updata is complete.
1:17:53 A blank alert, A blank alert. All right, guys, Star Trek News. All these segments can be found in their entirety on Trek Talking and beyond our Facebook page and Eric, you want to start us. Off, I do. Unfortunately, this week our first news story is more of a recent remembrance. Rest in peace. Peter David, the legendary comics writer and author. Peter David, the comic writer best known for a revolutionary twelve year run on The Incredible Hulk, has died. A lifelong lover of comic books, David had a hand in expanding and reinvigorating the mythos of the medium's most famous characters, including Spider Man, Captain Marvel, and Aquaman, picking up an Eisner Award for his work on Hulk.
1:18:41 Following years of health issues, his wife, Kathleen O'Shea David, confirmed David died on Saturday, May twenty fourth. She did not provide a cause of death. He was sixty eight years old. Born in Maryland in nineteen fifty six. David found comics as a child, picking up Casper Wendy books at the barbershop and seemingly never dropping them. His father, a newspaperman by trade who occasionally wrote film reviews, would encourage David to write his own. Though initially hoping to follow it in his father's footsteps, he'd eventually briefly give up writing to work in the sales department at Marvel Comics. At the time salespeople jumping to editorial was frowned upond Still, David found a champion and editor, Jim Owlsley, who published a story penned by David in Spectacular Spider Man number one three in nineteen eighty five, shortly after he began his generation defining run on The Incredible Hulk and No Kid in Folks. If you haven't read those, you should, which saw the writer expand the Hulk universe, who introduced the Joe fix It Gray Hulk and elaborate on Bruce Banner's complex relationship with his abusive father. He and artist Dale Keowne would win an Eisner Award for their work.
1:19:56 Around this time, he wrote Star Trek comics, Supergirl and Teen Titan, as well as the TV show's Babylon Five and Nickelodeon's Space Cases, which he co created with Bill Mummy. His twenty eleven run on X Factor, which is also fantastic, was renowned for depicting a same sex relationship between characters Shatterstar and Richter. The book won a Glad Media Award for Outstanding Comic. Some of his best Star Star Trek novels include Imzodi which is great Triangle, Imzodi two, The Captain's Daughter which is also fantastic, Vendetta, and IQ co written with John Delancy. David's health began to decline over the last fifteen years. Following back surgery for a herniated disk in twenty ten, David had a stroke in twenty twelve.
1:20:46 Three years later, he was diagnosed with type two diabetes, and he suffered a series of strokes, kidney failure, and a mild heart attack that eventually took him on May twentieth, twenty twenty five. This is a tight of comic books, you guys. This is a person who made a significant impact, and not just in terms of being a comic writer, but in terms of the types of stories that he chose to tell and the way in which he told them. His writing was fantastic, It was insightful, it was meaningful, and I think it actually changed a lot of people's lives, no kidding. So Peter David is a big loss, unfortunately, and we're sorry to see him go. But maybe we'll include him on our remembrances in the future since he did some Star Trek comics. But yeah, just really am sad that he's gone, but happens to all of.
1:21:39 Us absolutely Now. The next story was supposed to be accompanied by a video. Fortunately, guys, we are having difficulty right now with our video, so we're going to have to skip the video and you'll just have to imagine it in your head, unfortunately. So Patrick Storart is back in space to promote an ironically geeky vehicle. The wait for an upcoming Star Trek show isn't that far off. But before that, we have a surprise return to space for Patrick stot This promotion, which I was planning to show you has nothing to do with the Starship of any kind, is for the return of the Deloreum. Those interested in going back to the future and buying what appears to be a much sleeker DeLorean, we'll need to visit the official reservation system and marketplace, which comes with a bit of a catch. Users must purchase a twenty five ft, reserving their place among the first to buy the new vehicle, which is seen from the back in the commercial. A company image of the car is not available on the reservation website. It would have been great to see Patrick Stoart return and yet again for more adventures, so as to stinct possibility this advertisement maybe the last time we see him hanging out on the bridge of a starship. And I suppose we could play the video and mute it, David, Maybe, yeah, we.
1:23:06 Can track lets. The video is actually the video is actually being narrated by Patrick Stewart himself, which is why. Wonderful that we have a fantastic chance to make money and sell NFTs to people who can't really afford it. Isn't that great nostalgia for Back to the Future are able to give us some money. I feel like I'm a contemporary of Donald Trump, that I'm exploiting people for their money and shamelessly hope I can buy some more real estate with this video. Doesn't seem toybe working, though, does it. That's strange.
1:23:48 I'm flying across the universe, target acquired, that is me. I'm on Mars, by the way. I just suddenly wanted to just slap this right in the face of advertisers and say how much I just test the use of AI any forms, particularly in depictions of my likeness, where I would never appear in any such way. So I just think it's reprehensible, and none of the t experts on this show would have anything to do with a any AI are in any way, shape or form, because we all know it's a complete invalidation of artistic integrity and steals money from the pockets of legitimate artists like those who I used to be friends with. It looks so serious, it does, he says.
1:24:32 DeLorean raccoons don't. Don't confuse them with dumpsters like they do testless. You know. You see. He's just jumped right in. I love it id because he knows that's happened, right, that's happened. Yes, they don't explode, They they don't pull up when you drive. Actually, it's just like, well, I don't know why this is a news story. I mean, I know it has to do with Patrick Stewart, but it's like everything we're against. Right, I wanted to play it because Patrick Stewart narrates it.
1:25:15 It's it's kind of cool. When you hear it, it lessens your opinion of Patrick Stewart Man. It makes you realize he's as much of a shill as like Trump and Bitcoin. I mean this, No, we should not be it. We shouldn't be showing shining light and exposure on this kind of thing. I'm against it. Yeah, it just it makes him look in a bad light. It's not good. It's like when the Breaking Bad guys did like nacho commercials for the Super Bowl. It's just it's we they This isn't helping anybody, all. Right, our next story, Paul happy to. One of the things in the show a little unfiltered. So there you go. At least that's part of my love.
1:25:55 So you probably heard of Tony Newsome, right, known to many as Beckett Mayren in the animated Star Trek Lower Deck series. Well, guess what we have an update from her on her live action comedy series, which maybe might have appearances from some legacy actors. Right. She recently gave an update on the project, saying that there's a chance that some legacy Star Trek actors could find their way into the new series. Now, this project was first announced at the twenty twenty four San Diego Comic Con. Now, While she didn't go into a lot of detail regarding the new series, when asked about the time period it could be set in, she said, the era is still shifting, but my dream of dreams is to keep it in the twenty fifth century. Yeah, so anyone who's on Picard could theoretically be yeah on the show. My goal is that all of these lovely people, all of our legacy actors, everyone who's currently on a show. I want people to be able to show up with their real faces where we don't have to like do some insane de Niro in the Irishman expensive Ai to their face. Wow, everybody is against Ai. Solid saw, She's against it.
1:27:01 I like it. It's good. The fundamentals of the series a workplace comedy set on a vacation planet like Riisa, but not in the Federation. It's essentially the same. How did they pitch this? I'm just amazed, Like, we're going to. Do it totally different, but it's gonna kind of be the same. It's going to be a lot like Star Trek but not really at all. Thanks Star Trek, but different and I'm writing it. I'm funny, so come on, and she must have had a very successful bitch. I don't know. What I can tell you is that we're really working on exploring are the sort of overlooked sections of what happens in a world and a culture that is not in the Federation. Love it. That's so cool. What happens when they decide to be so Federation outsiders, and what's kind of nitty gritty involved with joining the Federation involved with Yeah, I'm really struggling to avoid spoilers, she said. So we didn't get a lot from you here, Tony, We really didn't, but we're intrigued. We've learned that a lot of your show has nothing to do with the Federation, so we'll find out.
1:27:58 But there you have it. I mean, we've talked a lot on this show about how we would love like a Klingon themed series. We would love a rodulent themes that like, I just think this is fantastic. To find out just a little bit more about this project, and knowing that it's not Federation based, that makes me even more excited about it. I gotta I gotta pitch something because she just pitched, right, Can I pitch something to you guys? Just in real time because we've done some we've done some good news stories here, right, and we're a little head of schedule shockingly with all the technical stuff. Let's what do you think about using the last ten minutes of the show to just really embrace our new trexpert VA and we all take turns asking her some questions to get to know her.
1:28:40 Is that okay? Sure? Well, Uncle Jim, what do you think can we do this? Yeah? We have, we have the time, We definitely have. Let's make it feel welcome by asking your questions. Okay, I'll start because I'm annoying that way. These again, Welcome to the show. It's a good sport on here. I would like to ask you what, of all the movies that have been made from the Star Trek franchise, what is your favorite Star Trek movie? I still be right, I can ask your follow up, what is your least favorite? Starting? No, actually yeah, I just have to say Star Trek for or the Voyage Home. Yeah, there's that wonderful environmental message.
1:29:29 Uh and I love you know who doesn't love whales? And there were so many, so many great lines in that. I mean, we had you know where spot can't use colorful metaphors. You've got Kirk Thatcher, that punk rocker on the bus that I think reappears in Picard, doesn't he the guy with the music which is, yeah, I still hate you and I beraate you all that. And then at the very you know, when they've got the when the bird of Press has crashed into the bay and they're all swimming around, and that just to me was just such a moment of unscripted joy among all the all the actors. I don't know, just I just loved it for lots of reasons, but that's my favorite.
1:30:24 One. More. How do you feel about the direction that the franchise is going. Well, I've been sort of late to some of the shows. Like I said, you know, I only discovered DS nine last year, and now I've been watching it on the Pluto TV app. There's DS nine and I'm watching it, you know, when I'm when I'm awake and not at work. I'm watching it round the clock, and I've just really gotten into it. There's just some me being having a history background, you know, I just I just love the writing and d S nine enterprise. I've sort of I haven't watched I've heard things about Discovery. You know, people have trashed it. I've seen that online, but I always want to give things a chance. You know, I'm going to I'm going to watch as many of them as I can. But I don't know, I just think it's it's amazing that, you know, Gene Roddenberry had this idea and you know, all those those years ago, and here we are today, you know, still still new shows and we're still talking about it. So I think it's you know, pa, can I say if Paramount Plus would would get on the ball and maybe help us out a little bit.
1:31:46 But uh, you know, so I think I think it's I think it's got potential. I mean it's continuing. I hope it continues for a while longer. Awesome. So Victoria, what's your what's your Star Trek origin story? How did you get into Star Trek? Well, I think if you saw earlier, the one picture of me when I'm just just impossibly young, that one with Walter Kinig that was in August of nineteen eighty four, there was a okay, well, I have to go back a little bit. I used to do singing telegrams when I back then.
1:32:32 Love. Yeah, you realize that as I'm recruiting you for the band. Right, Yeah, I don't know if I sing anymore. But so, long story shirt, Okay, So there's this fourteen year old kid that came up with doing a convention in Virginia Beach in nineteen eighty four because that's where I grew up, in Virginia Beach, and he got Walter Kinig and he got Richard hat from Battlestar Galactica, and his sisters wanted to do something special for him. So they wanted a because sometimes I could, you know, when I was when I still had half a brain and I was more creative.
1:33:17 I wish I still had it. But I wrote a Star Trek. I think I did it. I think I did the song to the Star Trek theme, and I'll have to find the picture where I dressed up sort of try to do my version of an alien. But I wound up going to the convention and then you know, got changed and then did the singing telegram for the kid, and Walter and Richard Hatch were at his house and everything. So that's kind of a convoluted story. But I've always I've watched I watched the original series Endless reruns and I think Next Gen was the first one that I was the only one that I watched as it first came on, and I was just against watching any of the others. And then you know, getting into DS nine and loving it so much, I said, idiot, you know, why didn't I watch it when it first came on, Because there's so much you know, I think Far Beyond the Stars and Past Tense are two of my favorites just because of the history and you know, doing what I do. I'm just I'm not into eighteenth century history, but I you know, I see, you know, it just it just weaves its way through everything. And so those are two of my favorite episodes in DS nine, And then of course Lower Decks like how did I miss that?
1:34:41 And now I want to watch Strange New Worlds get into that. So and I went to like I said, I went to my first convention, my first major one the end of March Galaxy con and Richmond and got to meet or or had a picture with I think that was up there as well, with William Shatner and Jonathan Frakes. And it was right after William Shatner's birthday. He's ninety four. Holy crap. And I got to you know, you have like two seconds when you go up there, and I said, happy birthday. And then I told Jonathan Frakes, I said, you are still riker hot nice but she is, Yeah, he is. I got to say that in like two seconds.
1:35:23 So yeah, and oh and I also I forgot to talk to him about his Star Trek role. But Alan Ruck was there, who had been you know, Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and I was talking with him. There was nobody at his table. So I just went up and just you know, told him I'm much I appreciate it him. And I forgot about he was in. I forgot which Star Trek, but he was. He was in there not until Tuesday. He was only good. That's right to keep calling me and calling me the first captain of that ship. Yes, yeah, so and I want to go. I want to go to another one. I want to go. I would really like to, if I can swing it, go to the one in New Jersey in the beginning of September because there are lots of Star Trek people there.
1:36:14 So you know, I guess my as I'm getting older, I'm getting bolder, you could say. So absolutely, Well, well, make sure you're bold enough one day to watch Star Trek Voyager as well. Because you oh yeah, oh yeah, oh no, I love Voyager. Oh yeah, ok, yeah, yes, because that's my that was my whole thing. And I because I have to meet Kate Mulgrew because that my outfit that I'm wearing. I made because we're history nerds, are Sciphi nerds. I have a I made an eighteenth century version of a Racknea's gown from Captain Proton, and I have to meet I have to meet Kate Mulgrew wearing that. I know she will appreciate it. So she's going to be at that one in September.
1:37:05 Oh yeah, it's so exciting to my gosh. I know I have to. I just especially wearing that gown, because that's that's quite a thing to turn What was Captain Proton was like a nineteen thirties or forties Holid Deck program. But they're, you know, voyagers in the twenty fourth century, and I'm converting it to the eighteenth century. Figure that out. She would be smart enough to figure all that out. I love it. Yeah, yeah, it's it's interesting. So that's a sort of jumbled version but i'm I think, I'm I'm never going to stop. So oh man, that's great. Thanks for sharing that with us.
1:37:46 Jim David, what do you got. Well, the Colonial Williamsburg Colonials or Union Army. Oh no, not that. No, it's eighteenth century, so it's this is the Revolution, so no union yet, but colonial Well, Williamsburg was Virginia's second capital city from sixteen ninety nine to seventeen eighty. And you know, everybody always talks about, you know, everything happening in Philadelphia and all that stuff, but a lot of things happened here. So this is where they called for the forming of the Continental Congress, and it was a Virginian that wrote the resolution that eventually got voted on for independence. So lots of stuff.
1:38:37 If you all can come here, I will give you a personal tour, and if you can bring a Star Trek Star that'll be extra extra points. Yeah. Well a Klingon might show up waving as batlet around. You never know, all right, that's that would be cool. Actually, one of the managers here he's a big Star Trek fan. So I would love to see a live action series with the Klingon brothers from Lower Decks, the blood Wine Brothers whose names escape me right now. But I thought they were great. Yeah, yeah, I thought they were great. So are you you planning to come back and join us again next week or did we scare you?
1:39:21 Yes? No, are you kidding? It takes more than that to scare me away? Gosh, No, I would love to come back. We did have a lot of we haven't officially talked about it, but I'm pretty sure you're in. Okay, okay, all right, yeah, because if you would say to me that, oh, you sucked, we hate you, don't ever come back, you know, on this live thing, that that would be really kind of a terrible thing. Well, you aren't catching us at our best. Uh we uh, usually our miracle worker, David is more of a miracle worker. But it's it's okay. That's that's why I like the eighteenth century. I understand the technology absolutely digital stuff, that's yeah.
1:40:09 But I but I'm learning, I always, you know, I'm always learning. So I was able to do this, So that's a that's a big deal. So yeah, now, this this was great. This was great. I really enjoyed it. Well, welcome aboard, friend, thank you, thank you. David did you have any questions for val. I actually got a couple. So you said, Riker hot. So do you like Riker with a beard or without a beard? Uh? Definitely with the beard. Okay, with the beard, Yeah, and doing the Riker maneuver. And have you all seen the I think I don't know if he sells it, but somebody made a Riker clock where his legs and I wanted I was trying, I want to, I want to make Still I put it aside because I couldn't get it to work. You know, the the naked Boimler where he's kind of like going like this.
1:41:14 I never figured out. Yeah, yeah, I think that was Boimler on the Holiday. But yeah, the Riker clock is hilarious. Well, and I also like the fact that he's just he's a good guy and he's been married to Jeanie Francis, who I was a fan of when she was on General Hospital, and so he's he just seemed you know, I'd love to he just seems like a really good guy. And he also did the what was that show where it was truth or factor fiction and he goes through all these scenarios and you have to guess whether the story was true or not? Have you seen that?
1:41:55 Yeah, beyond belief factor fiction. That's right, Yeah, that's it. Yeah, yeah, cool, Yeah, definitely the Riker beer doing the Riker maneuver. Ye. I've got one more question regarding your background for the eighteenth century Revolution they were. I liked watching a lot of the shows that they've been coming out with the Revolution they were, and I wanted to get your opinion on like how accurate to do some of those movies actually portray Like have you ever seen the movie what a TV show called Shark with Sean being in it? Which one? Which one is that I didn't I kind of you kind of glitched out?
1:42:37 Yeah, sorry, Oh yeah, it's called Shark with an e at the year. I don't think. No, I haven't seen that one. I know they filmed like parts of Turn here, but I haven't seen that. I haven't seen that one. There was also the John Adams mini series and then oh also Ken Burns is coming out in November with because if you've ever seen any of his film series, he's absolutely the best, and he's he's coming out with the American Revolution series and he filmed a lot here because we're like the biggest you know, eighteenth century living history site in the world. So I have the ones that I've seen.
1:43:21 Sometimes they take you know, pardon the pun, liberties with things, hah yeah, but sorry, couldn't resist. But you know, they I don't know, because we have a there's a film that people see that they've been showing at the visitor center called Story of a Patriot and it's from I think nineteen fifty something and it has an unknown Jack Lord that's playing the lead characters before his Hawaii five o days. That's called Story of a Patriot and it's that one is because it was in the fifties and the history of the time, it's not quite There's a lot that they they leave out as far as the deeper reality of our history. But I don't know. I have to I have to watch a series and sometimes I can, you know, with the military aspects of it, I can't tell if they're correct or not. But the clothing I.
1:44:22 Can so somewhat similar to the other Patriot movie that mel Gibson did. That one I haven't even I haven't seen either because not a mel Gibson fan kind of eh. But I heard that one was really good because it used to be where in movies like that. A lot of the reenactors would be extras in those movies and so. Cool. There's so many that I haven't seen, but I heard that one was really good. Yeah. Well I think that pretty much answered a lot my question. But to thank you and uh yeah, welcome to the show, and I hope that you will return.
1:45:08 Yes, I will, I will. I promise. I'm not going to go to all I'm not going to just disappear. Now. This was so much fun. I really really enjoyed it, so thank you so much for having me. And shocker Jason Isaacs is in that movie and he plays a bad guy. Who would have figured who ever would have figured that? Well, the question is was Jeffrey Combs in it? She was a horse? Oh boy? Well, I'm glad that you saw the ad and you answered it, and I think you're going to make a great mission. You're going to be a great trek spurt, So welcome aboard. We'll have to get you onto our page so that you can have your own stories and your own birthdays to read, which will be awesome. Before we go, I to remind all of you guys that we have a special Tuesday show coming up on June second, at four o'clock Eastern time, that would be my time and one o'clock Pacific time.
1:46:14 That's the rest of my truck Sperts. And we're gonna have Bruce Horror, who played Hammer. I think an awesome character and en R for those of you who want to be specific, not not an Andorian, and I'm really looking forward to talking to him. That's going to be a great show. That's going to be on Tuesday, So mark your calendars and try to be here if you can. Yeah, I'm at work. I don't know how long you're gonna be. I could always jump in late if you're still on.
