2:34 I have myself. I have Jared Leto's disease. So I'm not able to see a movie with Jared Leto in it. But I am able to see a movie with a lot of Waila Tutani androids and crazy monsters. And that I love. And so I would talk about highly recommend that Alien Earth has been picked up for a second season. That's right, that's right, very good news, very good news. So a lot of good stuff out there, And we got the we got the excitement of Pluribus that is out there as well science fiction fans. So you're not watching Pluribus, you really need to be checking that stuff out too. So there's a lot of good stuff happening these days, I guess as I'm full of enthusiasm, full of enthusiasm.

3:15 I've been watching it Welcome the Dairy, which is wow, has. Some really great Those opening credits are the bomb. They are hilarious, They're so disturbing, just really really good. They tie it into the Stephen King universe with characters from other Stephen King movies, which is awesome as well. So I don't want to ruin it for people that haven't seen it. But anyways, that's our beyond. We are beyond beyond. We have very own v I'm doing all right. I got Moopsie. 40:32 Yeah, you know, the Final Front TV with Uncle Jim. And now we're going to move on to the meat and potatoes, the part of the we're going to talk about Star Trek Con. So that we're going to turn to Paul to give us a quick of the episode. I am. It's a strange title, right, I mean, kind of is. But coming to the home stretching this we drama here, folks, this podcast drama. And you know, I think we've been through a lot and a lot still to come. But this. I would have to categorize this one. It's kind of a deer jerker, right, I mean it, you know, should come with at least one or two possible trigger warnings for folks, depending on you know, what your history is.

41:19 But we got some big plot twists and big events that unfold in this show. In particular, you know who's mentioned in the title, but Marlon mcgivers, because you know, this happened to me all the time. I try to take a nice relaxing bath to the hotspring, and what happens. I get attacked by a set of eels, right, and I'm just not able to you know, it's just not able. To relax and join me something. Right. That's why I never go into a hot spring by myself, because I need to make sure there's someone else that I can push towards the eel if that should ever happen. But anyhow, all joking aside, this happens to me who we know is pregnant with Pond's daughter. And we actually get a name for Khan's daughter, which is a great trivia question. But is uh go ahead and say it's name Collie, right, you know, which is a little bit of a you know, maybe foreshadowing of not you know, the best of things in some ways. But anyhow, seti Eel burrows into her ear and she's ultimately killed. Right, they don't really feel you know, it's kind of a teta tet between Cohn's people and the Elborians. We're gonna talk about the Olborians, I think a lot tonight. Maybe they can keep her alive until their daughter is born.

42:40 But things don't go as they hoped they would. And so Marlon mcguvers has of course been kind of Cohn's north star, right, and this becomes her loss becomes a pivotal moment for his character because he is consumed by grief, and it basically begins this I guess you call the solidification of his is blaming Kirk for his circumstances. Right. Meanwhile, I don't know if. I'm even remotely going in orders, trying to you know, go from notes here. But is you know, sort of assistant fellow Ivan whatever his rank or position is, is being held captive by the Alborians, right, and it is eventually sacrificed to save the rest of Khan's people, Right, which is whoa a bit of a surprise, and CON's loyalty to Ivan has kind of blinded him to who Ivan has become at the stage of the game. And there is a lot of distrust happening at this point, right, Distrust in the Alborians, I would say, is increasing at this point, right, And the Alborians have been trying to build this ship to save everyone from the dying world, and it gets crazy. There is the idea of restitution being made for death, which turns out to be of course who's responsible. And so we're at a bit of

44:12 a juncture point as things. Are getting worse. The Elborians are looking for a way to save their own people and find a way to live alongside cons people. But we've got this huge personal tragedy that happens in the in the midst of all this. So, I mean, that's that's kind of where we find ourselves. It's an upsetting episode. In a lot of ways, but I think it's an emotionally rich one. I think, to me, this is one where I think the actors, especially wrench Med, I think, really came to deliver some quality work. But that's where we find ourselves. So enough stage setting, let's talk about this episode. I'm sure I've forgotten, so.

44:58 Just jump in. How about ladies first, you want to get us started the Yeah. So, as I was listening to it, as always, I write down notes of things that stand out to me. When Ivan is in the beginning, he's berating Khan and he reminds him that we are the superior race and basically it's all about you know, the planet belonging to them and because we are superior, and of course my historian's mind, it's like, how many times throughout the beginning of you know, time have people said that it's like, we are superior, so this is our world. So that really resonated with me. Also sad. I just was so sad at the just the enormous distrust that the Augments have of the Elborians when they're you know, not they're trying to help, you know, they're they're I mean, there's so much and later on when Con has the conversation with Delmanda, it's like, good God, this guy is trying to help. They're building a freaking ship, and they're still the distrust. But I did like the scene because it reminded me of a Star Trek Voyager episode. But when they're playing they found Ivans, I guess, because they cleared out ivans quarters and they've got his his I guess,

46:32 boombox or whatever, and they're playing the music. And the Alborians are fascinated by that because they're all, you know, telepaths, so they don't really have music. But that reminds me of the episode of Voyager when the doctor was humming and those those I can't remember now what the people were, but they were they had never heard music before. And then he thought he was going to be a famous singer on their planet and it just wound up not working out for him. Let's see all the uh so, everything that Delmando is offering, and I just I think more than generous, and he that he even offered, uh you know, when they were talking about Ivan, who killed you know, one of the Elborians, and Delmondo's offering to you know, do like I guess, basically a mind meld with him and take out the part that made him a killer. It's like, you know that that's that's just enormously generous. And then of course we get to that that terrible part where you have Marla, she's enjoying herself in the hot springs and then she gets you know, but I don't know if she did she get bidden or did it get was she like, I didn't really understand how the eel attacked her.

47:54 So these things I'm trying to figure this out. Are they like amphibious, they fly through the air, they live in the tree, they burrow in the ground. I don't know, yeah, like like they're just like everywhere. Yeah, she was enjoying herself. And then she says owl and you know, I don't know, something like underwater if it bid her, I don't I don't understand. But then they break away from that and you've got Cohn and Ivan together again and find out that Ivan is trying to poison Kan because he's sneering at Khan wanting to cooperate with the Alborians. And uh, then after what sounds like a really you know, like a because I understand these these men are they have superior strength. So they're tussling.

48:51 But then Ivan gets exiled and Con basically says, you're just going to live your life. You can't come in and you'll die. So that's I don't know, I guess that's the end of Ivan. But then the heartbreaking part of they should warn they should have you need a box of tissues when you listen to this. So once again, no trust or very little trust in the Alborians who are trying to help Marla to see if they can do anything, but unfortunately they can't because who is it the doctor, doctor what's her face? Said? I can't believe you're letting an Alborian look at your wife. It's like, come on, they're trying to they're trying to help, and then they find, you know, there's there's nothing that can be done. So that's absolutely heartbreaking. And all they can do is try to save, you know, try to save the baby or keep Marla alive long enough, and that's that's so I don't know, it's just that's absolutely heartbreaking.

49:56 So now we know in the doctor tells them what we we have to do. We just have to slow down her brain functions, but she's going to stay alive until the babies you know, comes to you know term and can and can be born. So now we know what absolutely has broken Khan and what made him the man that we see, you know, in the Wrath of Khan. But also one last that last scene it's just absolutely heartbreaking because you've got the sound of her heartbeat that is just going slower and slower, and and then as he's getting me up, just kind of choking me up, where Con is reciting Coleridge, which he had Marla loved Coleridge but Con didn't. But yet as she's being put I guess into a basically a I don't know if it was a sleeping like a permanent sleeping state, but she was alive to incubate the baby for instance, you know.

51:04 But he's just sobbing and reciting Cole Ridge and it was just absolutely just gut wrenching. So that definitely I don't know if I I think I break this one at ten because it was it was that emotional and that well done. So that's my take on it. How did Ton know that Ivan was trying to poison him with He. Said something about he said, how you know, do you expect me to not know that I've got a glass of poisoned whatever it was, you know, being handed to me. So he must have known that Ivan was going to try that. I don't know that's I didn't really understand that either, But.

51:55 Because maybe Delmonico told the movie. I think he's I think I don't think that was I don't remember hearing any I don't think so. I don't know. That's a good question. Yeah, you just kind of knew. Yeah, maybe because he would have if they had been maybe if they had been in you know, if the tables had been turned, Con would have poisoned Ivan. That's that's the only thing I can think of. Yeah, yeah, so i'ven't bit the dust yep history. Eric, you want to jump in next and share your thoughts, sure.

52:36 Yeah, I mean just relative to that last thought. Yeah, I mean we've we've kind of seen Ivan's you know, evil nature, I guess building for for many many weeks now. And what was interesting to me was the whole idea that Khan, you know, Ivan's like, you've changed, and CON's like, yeah, I've changed. I can do things now that I couldn't do before. And so there's been personal growth by Khan that even feels like has left him behind or or you know, is not part of the old ways or whatever. It was nice to see. I even get his just deserts tall day. But I really like the way this episode started. So it once again started in the future time with Tuvac and Lear doctor Lear chatting with one another, and we find out something pretty cool, which is that the logs were found in a salvaged vessel of some kind.

53:37 So if you connect that to the fact that the Aliens are building the four seater vessel, I think we know that this vessel is going to make it off the planet. Now we don't know who goes, but I think the logs go with the ship. So that's kind of a cool thing to know. Now. I love just the battle between Tuvac and Lear. How Lear is just kind of like pushing forward and Tuvak feels like he's trying to hold her back or somehow like protect you know, the legacy of Kirk and and kind of people from back in the day. So anyway, really like that's a total side story to the real meat and potatoes in this episode. But I really like that opener. Okay, fast forward to the later stuff. I totally agree with the man this this is a tear jerker.

54:30 The poem and everything just I was not expected, Like I kin'd we all knew that mcgivers was gonna that's gonna die at some point, but I just wasn't quite like ready for it, I guess, And so it did. It did hit me? Yeah, surprisingly hit me. Uh, let me see what else? You know? Kahn and Ivan their whole conversation where Ivan's all like, you know, we got to dominate these people and Con is saying something different. I think was kind of interesting.

55:11 What else do I have in my notes here? Yeah? I think V just really hit it on the head when you were talking about the Elborians and about how they're just constantly trying to help. And at first when they brought aliens into this story, I just didn't really I don't know, it was kind of like, ah, why are they mucking this up? But I'm seeing how they are the catalyst for developing past macgivers, for developing any sort of you know, empathetic version of Con. Now what I'm a little worried about, which I think is where this is going. But maybe I shouldn't So maybe I shouldn't be worried about it. But like, is the ultimate message of this entire nine episode series gonna be if you kick a man enough times, he turns into a jerk and tries to steal your starship. You know, Like, I don't know, I want one more moment for con where he kind of triumphs passed the the revenge stage.

You know, you got to hope that the story, the meat and potatoes of the story, is good enough to kind of carry you through. So anyway, I really liked this episode. I don't know if it was the best absolute best one. It certainly was a tear jerker, and I thought it was really well written, and I like some of the little personal interactions that happened. The conflict between her and Tuvox and to the Tuvox.

It's like they're really trying to push trying to protect Kirk, and I think there's another story going on that. I think he's the Tuomics realized there's another story going on. I just don't think if he wants to really let that information out, which was interesting, definitely, I havenan. I think Ivan was going over the top.

It's like, Okay, the Givers was trying to tone tone con down, and yet Ivan is just trying to sit there and ruin all of this, and it's one to sacrifice it just to say, oh, we're the tough civilization. It's like, Okay, there's a civilization trying to help you here, and you're refusing to accept the help. You want to conquer them instead of getting help. Oh, we're gonna conquer them and take the ship. No, because you don't know how to fly that ship. So I think he was kind of a point of being happy that ivan it is going to get shoved away because I think he's getting a little way too out of hand.

58:58 As for the SETI eel, I wonder if the set of eel might almost swim also and was trying to it was trying to embed itself in her foot or where she was sinking down into the water, but swim in tried to get into her. So you. We don't know a lot about these seat of eels or then yeah, there's a good reason why they're a difficult species on this planet. I mean, the one thing. So let's logic this out. So they the inevitably they want to get to the brainstem. It seems like, right, that's sort of an ultimate destination for your set of eel. So so the the easy ways that we've seen to get there are via the ear, you know, presumably like you could go in anywhere in your general stinuses like mouth or you know, any of that kind of stuff. You probably it probably doesn't I don't think. I don't think it would like enter like just through some random to your body. Right, So it must be that she dunked her head under or.

So I was like, that's an interesting point on like this whole thing, where like are Vulcans really lying or are they just kind of like telling truth? But I mean, you know,

So but other than that, I thought it was kind of a little weird that even for a telepathic race, I mean, as long as you have any kind of sound that they couldn't come up with music. So to me, I just thought that was a little strain that they did never heard of music before show.

Get that mainly to it was. It was mainly to get help and then come back and get the other people.

Yeah, maybe she went to get a steak and he was there, you know, But yeah, I find it. I'm not quite sure what thread uh is going on between Leir and this Delmonico dude, del Monta. Something's there. Why would this dude care about conn in the first place?

So I'm waiting to find out what the connection is with that whole situation, why he even cares, because obviously he got off the planet or the logs wouldn't be there and he wouldn't have been able to get him to her, And what exactly is her game? What is she looking for? Like? What is she trying to prove that Con was actually an angel who was dancing around in the tiptoeing through the tul of playing a ukulele and you know, spreading love and joy? I mean, what what? What is she trying to prove here? That what we know about Con isn't true? Is that her deal? Like that he wasn't a mass murderer and anything like that. So you know, I don't know what she's after, and I don't know what this del Mondo dude is after, but I didn't enjoy it. I think that Eric was right. I think the death of Marla is because Con, I think, is going in a good direction. He's dealing with the aliens.

1:11:12 He's you know, he's kind of trusting the alien and he's going against his nature on Marla's wishes, and she's pushing him in that direction. But now that Marla is out of the picture, I think we're going to see the Con that we see in Rata Khan, you know, come out. I think the revenge is starting to seek in and we're going to see that that vengeful, hateful Cohn e merge out of the death of Marla I think. I mean, I haven't listened to next week's episode, so I don't know yet, but that's what I'm thinking.

I love all the Marlo Guiris stuff. I think is really great. I find some of the plotting though, with the aliens and things a little upduse, and maybe it's one of those things that when we finally watch or listen to the last two episodes will make a little more sense. But I find some of that stuff just not you know, I'm a little torn, I think, to be legit, honest, I think probably for me an eight is accurate. I think on there, So that's where I think I'll land. I mean, you know again, it's it's very sad, it's very emotional stuff. But it just goes to show you, I mean, you know, the challenges with this right radio essentially right, it's like the old radio place as opposed to television. We can see everything, I mean, not everybody hears and imagines it the same way. Where you know, like when we're talking about the SETI eel right, everyone's there's a lot of internal confusion where everybody is not super clear on what was depicted. Right, So it's a very challenging medium to work in.

Carl Stephen was the actor who played the nine year old version of Spock in Star Trek three, The Search First Bock. This was his first Eat Your film appearance. He actually again played the younger version of a Leonard Nimoy character in the nineteen ninety one made for television movie Never Forget, directed by Joseph Sargent. So kind of a fun and interesting thing that he's actually portrayed a young version of Leonard Nimoy twice. He was briefly a regular performer on the series Webster in that nineteen eighty six to nineteen eighty seven seasons. You may have remembered that particular face right there from that television show. And he was in a few of those other eighties movies like Teen Wolf and Honeye Shrunk the Kids, and a couple other ones along the way. So tragic and unfortunately to Carl Stevens's life lost at thirty six years old, but we appreciate his contributions to Star Trek.

Happy birthday as well to Norman Lloyd, the actor who played Professor Galen in the Next Generation six season episode The Chase. Norman Lloyd best known to television audiences for playing doctor Daniel Auschlander on the drama series St. Elsewhere from nineteen eighty two through nineteen eighty eight. He began his career in show business performing in theater before Alfred Hedgecock cast him as Frank Frye in nineteen forty two's Saboteur. So that's kind of a cool little beginning to a career, and this guy at one point he was the oldest. He was the person who was the oldest who had lived that had been in Star Trek. But anyway, he's like second or third on the list. But this guy lived to be one hundred and six years old, so we lost him back in twenty twenty one.
