So, man, I really would love to get into a conversation with the folks who said no, because seventy thirty is no runaway pole, so a significant You know, almost a third of people who answered the poll didn't like the way those two connected with each other. Now, if I had to guess what it was, it would be something related to the thing that I kind of felt about it, which was that I loved that it did it, So my answer would be absolutely, but little forced. You know, It's like, oh, now we got to go take away all the a that we put on here, and now we've got to do all this and it kind of felt like a a closure of a of a writing thing that wasn't planned ahead of time. That had to happen because it had to happen. I don't know what's your take.

But you know what that that finale did do, Jim, was it answered a question that back when Calypso came out, we had a lot of questions about and that was when exactly was Calypso set And it wasn't until we had Discovery and we knew that Discovery had launched itself into the thirty second century, and then we knew that Calypso took place one thousand years after that. That brings us to the forty second century. That means that here's your trivia stuff. When you go to trivia night and people are like, what's the most you know, forward looking example of star trek that we have that you know, of any substance. We've got way beyond enterprise, j We've got all the way up to enter forty second century with Calypso.

I think what we saw in season five would have cared on the season Hicks and Chevin, however far they go in. But yeah, the only thing that I felt about it I did like that they wrapped it up. I did like that Burnham was an admiral, she was married to Booker, they had a son who was a captain. I liked.

But the one thing that they didn't explain that I was that why did they have to take the A off the ship and why did they have to take the technology away and put them put it back the way it was? And the only answer for that is because when they did Calypso, they didn't know they were going to do that in the future, you know, So they had to put the ship back to the way it was in season two in order for it to work in Calypso. And that's just a technicality thing, you know. I don't think I don't think that the I don't think that the Cannon police were too happy about that, you know, but I didn't mind it, you know. I would have to go with in pole position for me would be Spot, and then right behind Spot for me, right, A close second would be isis Spot?

So honestly my first choice when I did this one, I did multiple choices, and I chose Porthohis was my first choice, and then I went immediately to Spot. So yeah, yeah, that's the way I did. All right. How about you, Charles, I would have. Hit Grudge first and possibly a Spot second. Round. I was as much a cat person, but when Grudge came out, I was a bigger cat person by then. And we did we did give away the Grudge books and we had the author on the podcast, so yep, you know Grudge. Grudge gets a leg up or a tail up in that case.

I agree that I think we all see Spot as a reflection of data, and I love all of Data's little conversations that he has with Spot along the way you like while he holds the cat up and looks him in the face. So Spot was my number one choice, but I I'm a dog guy, so Porthos is definitely second for me. Plus He's just a cute little beagle that loves cheese. What's not to like about that? I love the references to Apocalypse Now and the James Bond movies. The ski chase not my favorite episode, but definitely not a bad one either. Oh and I'd ship both a Tallnn Mariner or a Tallinn Tendy relationship, though to Maren would seem a bit more logical to me. Thanks Christian, That's awesome.

Okay, all right, Well we're talking about The Best Exotic Nite Hotel, where the Lower Deckers hunt nanites on a resort deep in space. Right, and the episode title is of course playfully tweaking the twenty eleven British comedy The Best Exotic Marygold Hotel for those who didn't get the reference there. But they're pretty much always trying to work in a pun with the episode titles to reference something else, because that is what Lower Decks is all about, referencing something else. Right, So they don't really do a lot of original things on the show. They're having fun riffing on other stuff. So the whole point here is they're doing a mission to capture some kind of growing nanite cluster that's loose on this big cruise ship, the Cosmic Duchess, right, and then things get crazy when Jennifer joins right, who's apparently unaware that she and Mariner broke up a couple of seasons ago. It's really nice that we have Tendy and Rutherford back together, right, I think that's really nice. Uh, definitely a good thing there. And uh, there's not a lot for me to talk about for this particular episode, guys.

36:10 I'd rather save a lot of it for what's coming next. It was okay, I mean, Boymler is excited to go join Ransom for this undercover mission, right, But uh, it's all about beachwear and a lot of weird kind of you know, half baked references there. As Charles intimated, a lot of what we're doing here is kind of going in and riffing off of Apocalypse Now in kind of a left handed way. Right. The uh, the the Admiral is named after a screenwriter, crazy right winging screenwriter, John Millius. It's definitely a unique gat in the annals of Hollywood there. But he's the guy who wrote Apocalypse Now got an oscar for it.

36:54 So I'm not really sure where the you know, the sunburn thing came from that they were working there and very odd Crag looks to be inspired by the Marvel Universe's cord from uh, you know, the MCU. It was what I could say. I think for me, this wasn't as a very successful episode. I find it a little tedious. Uh gonna sound like I'm on repeat from from last week. But for me, what kind of saved it was to Lynn. Right, I think that Gabrielle Ruiz is just great. I liked it in this episode we got a little bit more of insight into how she's not really as completely in control of everything with herself as we might think. Right, I thought that was it was really fun. She makes a lot of cutting remarks about Mariner's bad communication skills and super extra bonus points for me for her use of the word propinquity, which I thought was charming and delightful.

37:54 So I think d Lynn continues to be the MVP of this series. Uh, And I was started to get a little bit less than confident about where we were heading into this season. But I will save the second half of that sentence until we get to the next episode. So it was okay, but a lot of stuff that just didn't really go anywhere. The the whole. Sorry Jennifer thing, right, Jennifer, isn't it? The whole Jennifer thing was just not well written. I find the banter between her and Mariner just really.

It definitely wasn't very funny, I thought, so not a success and and kind of I found this episode war its welcome out for me really fast, and there was a lot of stick that just seemed really predictable. Yeah, yeah, so I I enjoyed that, and it would I do agree with Paul. It was kind of predictable, but it was a predictable in a fun sense. It was the humor was great. I don't like what lower decks She's been doing so far with their humor. And but that ending there where they finally find what looks like Voyagers

But to me, I don't know that's I'm not too much in the whole uh banter of people's relationships anyways. And in fact, I was unsatisfied with the whole like Jennifer breakup thing, and then this episode kind of tried to fix it, and I'm still unsatisfied. It's just like, okay, So what it did a good job of was it did a good job of showing two people who understand that they don't belong together and partying amicably, right, Like, that's that's a good lesson in life. That's a good thing to show on television. That can happen. But I don't know, they just I feel like the whole like Jennifer Mariner thing could have been something cool and then they just kind of like dropped the ball a little bit and it didn't really go anywhere. So I don't think I have too much else to say about this episode.

I was very happy that she was there because Star Trek needs representation, so that's really important to me. So having her there was great. Uh the micro Voyager that was cool too, But I just couldn't deal with this this giant like nannite bubble rolling around and sucking people in and they're just floating around inside this nanite bubble type of deal. Aug, what the hell?

This is what I watched this show to get is actual comedy, okay, and not a lot of self referential nonsense. I thought this was just extremely well structured, right. I love the opening, but basically there was just not the usual deal. They did this really nice, appealingly rendered cinematic depiction, and we're like, hey, we're on a farm here with funny kling on farmers and you know Malor's you know, the sassy farmer brother.

I thought it was pretty funny as a whole. But the real meat and potatoes of this stuff is all the stuff with the Klingons, right, and especially when you're going up against the Oversight Council, which is hilarious that we're really deconstructing a lot of the stuff that we saw an tig with the Klingons, right, and all the good stuff there.

Now we've pretty much made that clear, so we're paying attention to what that went. But it didn't get in the way of the humor, right and the fact that you know, I'm sorry, every single season of what we're season five now right on the lower das, right, Yeah, but every time they put Klingon's front and center on this show, you get comedy gold. I mean, that is pretty much. It's been a consistent thing for me, and I wish they would do more often. They really get how to riff on the Klingon, sticking themselves so seriously and making the violent

Do you guys remember last season when Nick Lacarano tried to take over the world with his crazy thing there the Klingon that that Mariner was stuck in the cave that is the Klingon. So that's how she knows him from that episode and anytime they do that, I particular, as you guys remember, I loved that episode too, and now he's back again, so I just can't say enough about it.

But there was a favorite partner this episode that I really really enjoyed, which was, oh yeah, the paint sticks didn't wharf go through the paint sticks and survived the very last one, because I thought they mentioned nobody ever survived the last one, and I'm like, wait a minute, they must have and uh up the jolt or something in this later seriod.

I think not only is Lower Decks at its best when it's sort of focusing on the comedy, but I think it's been very clear that when you go for these alternate stories that are sort of like part of the cannon but don't necessarily involve the main characters to a heavy degree, you can be very successful. So please, please please give me a animated Klingon series. Give me an animated and Dorian series, like, there's gotta be some like even if you do it for like a season or two. Right, think about how Disney does this. They'll they'll throw a show out there for eight or ten episodes and see if people like it, and if they don't, then they don't make another season.

But you know, you know what made me laugh the most eric is the fact that the brother I don't know was he the older brother, I'm gonna call him the older brother, was like, so like anti Klingon, I guess that's the best way. Well, because I mean he would throw off Lin like, oh well, well he has no honor because he killed his brother. I mean, he's making all these snarky klingon to just cracked me up because you would never hear a kling On saying the kind of stuff he was saying, and it was hilarious.

You're like, is this even the same team of writers. But I don't think good writing works without a great actor to actually deliver the lines. And I will say that some of those lines that Tony Todd delivers as Kern when he's talking to Wharf are just like they just are heart wrenching, right. You can feel the like klingon brotherness of what's going on there. So we will miss Tony Todd. We're so sorry that we lost him this past week. And I'll just say to you, brother, we all look up to the sky and yell our great klingon death for for you.

I mean, if you haven't gone and watched Sins of the Father's Sins of the Father for a while, right, which is basically the start of the whole worst discommendation art, go watch that for Tony Todd's performance. He's just he was such a veteran stage actor and it shows because he brings a gravitas that you just don't have if you don't know that kind of training, right, and he understood. I think he was one of those recurring actors that we saw on Star Trek who understood that basically, the Klingon culture it's Shakespeare, right.

The one other thing I wanted to make sure to mention for folks because people don't always know that he was in this. I think it was season one of The X Files. Check out an episode that he was in where he played a soldier who was part of an experiment where they made it so that the soldiers were constantly awake and never were able to remember. That episode Yeah, it was just awful. I mean it's just basically the idea was to make it so they're in the constuals U episode of Black Mirror. Yeah, it's from nineteen ninety four. He played a character named Augustus Cole right and uh and it was just the poignancy and the pain that he was able to evoke in that episode. It is just you want to see acting.
