Why would I not be doing well? Of course I'm doing well. Now. It's a good week and the whole some interesting stuff happened. Had a good thing happening was the weekend. It was superstitiously not say what it was, but it was the first time it's ever happened, and I was very pleased about that, and it was very auspicious so it made me feel really good, and he's giving me the fortitude to continue on and so it's good. So yeah, an interesting uh you know, uh, an interesting period of time hit on Earth as we have, and I was excited we're going to be discussing, uh, because this is our first sit down that we've had since the return of lower tacks and so we had, you know, guests and holidays and Halloween and all kinds of nonsense. So we're running a little behind, but we're finally going to get a chance to talk about lower decks and it'll be.

But when you're having to deal with the green orions, the blue orions, and we're waiting for the teal orion to show up, who knows what's going to happen next. That's true, You're absolutely right. We have no idea what color orions may appear next. We'll have to watch lower decks to find out. Well, I've had I've had an interesting couple of weeks, and I'm actually glad we're going to be talking tonight. My father died last week. As some of you may know, we didn't have a show right before Halloween because my father passed away. So that was that's how things started out for me. Of course, my met's had a good season, but they failed at the end. I threw my back out. I've been out of work for a couple of weeks. I have to go to therapy tomorrow, and so things have been pretty dark for me lately. And then of course there's other events that happened the other day which are extremely dark.

Now, I usually do three polls, but since we have two episodes to cover, I only did two polls for this week. So, Eric, what interesting, factual, titulating, exciting, fun filled pole questions did I come up with for this week?

19:18 Well, there are a couple of interesting ones here, Jim. I don't think we'll be too surprised with people's answers, but I do think a little discussion may be warranted. In the TNG episode's Birthright Parts one and two, Wharf gets romantically involved with Bayel, but he breaks it off when her romulent heritage is revealed to him. Do you agree with his decision? And twenty five percent of our pole response said yes, they do agree Wow his decision, but seventy five percent said that they did not agree with his decision. Now, listen her. Clearly, her race is like a major factor this decision, and I don't think that this is the first time that Wharf has kind of shown his true colors, so to.

Yeah, but you know, he also is the guy who like continues to work on himself and kind of knows that about himself, and eventually he sort of works his way out of it. So no question to me, T ANDG. Wharf is is racist af But I think he? So let me ask you a question though, Okay, because let's read between the lines here, because it's a little while since I've watched birthright right, maybe more than a year, right, I know I watched it with him last year or so. But but but what do we really think here? Did he was it a was it like a oh, I can't believe you wanted to sleep with me because you're a romulan thing? Or was he more upset about the fact that she kept a secret.

20:47 Like that from him? So is the fact that she's romulint that bothers him or the fact that she didn't come clean and she wasn't truthful with him, that that might be a variable as well. I'm just wondering, does the show come right out and explain that, you. Know, I'd probably want to go back and look at the the actual dialogue that happens. It feels to me like like it's he has a visceral reaction when he finds out specifically about her, like racial background. That's what I remember about it. Yeah, I think I had something more to do with the fact that Cleanon and Romulins were actually mortal enemies, so that probably took place as well. Always say that Romulins have no honor, so maybe he's looking for honor and relationship.

Man, that's just that you're pretty much you know what I mean, and you're done. In my googling, I just found the script really quick. And yeah, it's hard to explain. Lingons and Romulans. Their blood enemies have been for centuries. They're treacherous, defeedful, and without. Honor done, and so it's kind of like I think they use warf as a way to show how racism works, and in this particular example, I think it works well because to Buyel, Buyel, it is nothing. It's not an issue to her being raised on a Romulan. Klingon was it internment camp. To her, it's not an issue. So she doesn't even par partling on. Yeah, on half romulin.

22:47 But isn't he betraying his clingon thing by if she's part Klingon, he's turning his back on the Klingon. He's living like one percentage of her uh makeup, get in the way of you know, you know, I don't know. I mean it's me, it's a you know, yeah, they're probably going to come up with a different species then. Tent forward with Wharf. Right. If Wharf and I were in ten forward together having a prune juice, I'd be like, wh isn't it kind of hot? Though? I mean really, when you think about. It, forbidden, right, isn't that kind of you know, isn't it? Doesn't it get your battless polished? Isn't that kind of aude?

23:28 I mean, come on, come on, So she's formula and no one else is going to be a you know, don't come on, dude, what happened? I don't think most Klingons want to. Deal with this community. The biggest thing I believe is that Wharf didn't want If I remember correctly, Wharf was concerned because she would never be able to show herself and a cling on empire and walk amongst Klingons was his concerned. He was concerned with what other Klingons would think. And you know, I cannot introduce you to my mother because she exactly she would not approve of the way your ears look.

I think Alexander was born, but Whorf didn't know yet because ka Lar didn't come back years old or something iron alert you know, No, we I think. We already dealt with him that that's birthright was the middle of season six weady dealt with Alexander another fact. Wow, so that's kind of making worth even douche here then, right, I mean really around it, right, I mean you're kind of impocrt dude, I mean he is. You know, they're never going to be peace in the Middle East with Wharf in charge.

25:09 And well, so I'm like starting to wonder now I had said that he sort of worked his way out of it, but is there is there evidence that Wharf ever became not this way, whether it's in the movies or in Picard, like he and Eldore never got to cross paths. I think he I think he probably got a more peaceful version of war and for card sure, so I think he might have been more forgiving by. Then wait a second, hold on, guys, this wasn't a TG episode. I thought, Oh, that's that was six of TNG.

25:54 Forgetting the most important thing though, charls beheadings are on Wednesdays. That's the most importan thing. What happens on Thursdays? We talk about it later. Well, you just have a you have a prune juice and you kick back. But I just I thought this was an interesting question to bring off because Wharf is an honorable cling on and he tries to live up to that, but sometimes he can be a bit of a dink and this I think is one of those instances. And as far as him ever getting over it, I don't believe he ever did. But when when the Romulins and the Vulcans unify and together become the var would he hate all? What would he hate Vulcans at that point too? You know, I don't know, But at any rate, that was our first question, and sticking with the Wharf theme, was trying to trying to stay on topic a little bit. Uh, what was our what was the next pole question?

26:54 The next pole question was in the TNG episode Ethics, does Doctor Toby Russell make the right choice by giving Wharf the experimental spine? So you might remember that this is the episode where Wharf gets hit by the big blue barrel in the head. He takes some damage. They put him in sick bay. They say, brother, your back is broken. We can fix you. And he's like no, and they're like, no, really we can. And he's like no and they're like, dude, we can totally fix you up is a big deal. And he's like no, and then they do it anyway. So I say that the entire episode of Truk Talking has been worth it just to hear Eric. Could we capture that on tape and just put it at random moments throughout the show, please. I just like, we need a lot of mileage out of this man joint. Could you do it again please?

27:56 I can definitely send Jim a SoundBite of me saying no, Oh, I like it because. You don't sound your voices in as deep as warf, so you sound more like Michael J. Fox right before long. But he'll take it. I'll take it. I'm getting a whole other version of this episode in my head. Now, my whole head cannon. Is just shot. Oh my gosh, I love it all right. Well, you know what, believe it or not, folks, eighty seven percent of the people out there who answered this poll said that the doctor made the right decision, and only thirteen percent said no, way, he did not make the right decision. And so he does it against WARF's wishes, right, well, he kind of does.

28:38 And you'll remember about this episode that this is the one where Wharf is like, dude, I can't live like this. I'm a klingon Riker, will you please kill me? And Riker goes through all of this like consternation, and he like goes to Troy and kind of talks to her about it, and you know, in the end, he comes up with this idea that he can't do it. And so there's a little bit of a like whitewashing of Wharf's culture. I think that's happening if you look a little deeper into this episode. I mean, obviously everybody's like, well, do we can just fix your spine? Like I was saying, it's kind of no big deal. But also they're completely adoring his wishes along the way.

29:18 Well, what it was is that, you know, Riker, being the Klingon expert that he is, after serving on the pod, he uh, he goes to wharf with the knife and he explains the wharf that according to Klingon rituals and ceremonies, it has to be your next of kin. And the only person on the ship at that time that was next to kin was Alexander. Alexander right to kill wharf and which Alexander, Jim Which Alexander is this young kid Alexander right? Yes, this is Brian bontel h Alexander. And and you know, Riker goes to him and says, Alexander is to plunge this into your chest. And at that point Wor It's like, well, I can't have I can't ask Alexander to do that.

30:12 I'm asking you. And he's like, well that's not the king on way, dude. No. Riker and his technicalities legals got data off. But this is what I love about Star Trek because always brings up these ethical conundrums, right, I mean they ask you to consider it. Right, So here's the question, Right, what if it had been the spine was made as romulin DNA, he. Would have said no and like torn his own spine out after. You would have torn his own spine out affect, he would have really said, could do it? Do it? Do it? I think we dealt with that is later on. Didn't he didn't?

30:57 Yeah, there's like a you let him die? Yes, But the question, but the ethical question in this episode really wasn't with Wharf. It was between Crusher and doctor Toby because this particular h experiment had never been tried on a human being before, on a living whatever Klingon and doctor Toby told Wharf that this could completely heal him and make him as good as new, but Beverly Crusher was like, you can't test this contested theory on somebody who's desperate to walk again. It's not ethical to do that. And doctor Toby did it anyways, and which pissed off Crusher. Made Work happy, but pissed off Crusher because she didn't follow medical procedures. The question is a bunch of We had a bunch of different ethical issues that were all coming together in this one episode, which is why it's one of my favorites.

32:04 What My question is is did doctor Toby, I guess her name is did he use augmented DNA? Same thing at Conridge? And that's kind of an interesting or. I don't remember. I honestly don't remember what she did too. I don't remember the intricacies of it. But doctor well, I know I remember the deleted scene. That's all I remember from the Blue Rays. Do you remember that she was? She was notorious, doctor CRUs Just like, just like, listen, doctor Toby, where you're giving me a experimental spine. While you're at it, can you give me some other experimental parts?

Nomula n Doctor Crusher already knew who doctor Toby was because she had done this type of thing several times before, and just because the outcome turned out favorable, does the ends justify the means? Is the question? So this is a great episode, you know, this one and the Bayel one, I think are two great episodes to discuss ethics and cling on on or so that's why I chose them. So if you're one of them, so I love them.

33:31 I think I think we got so what do we think? What did the Texperts think? Did doctor Toby Russell make the right choice. I mean we think. Well, I mean I think there's a little I think what we've discussed here is that, in my opinion, there's a little bit of coercion going on here. And I know that Worf ends up like finding his way there, but Riker clearly uses his child against him as a like a as a battless to make him do what Riker wants him to do? And or or is it that Wharf really has gotten soft over time? And you know, the Klingon culture, I mean, listen, when you get I think when you get to any culture, so to speak, the culture matters to the people who are in it or who practice it to different levels. Right, And so one of the coolest things about Wharf is that through all of Star Trek you're constantly getting this full klingon guy who has all this stuff in his head about what he thinks a klingon should be because that's what he's heard a klingon should be. But really he doesn't want to be that kind of a klingon. But he battles against himself constantly. And this is just another one of those like great things, just like the one before this the like his racism, I started like joke about it, but like his racism is really a vestige of a

35:03 cultural norm that he's not really even part of. So it's just so interesting that he clings onto it with so much fervor, because it's almost like people's hate is what they cling to the most. Yeah, have you noticed that? Speaking of Wharf being the perfect textbook Klingon, but how do you notice that every time Wharf runs into other Klingons, they are never what they're supposed to be. According to his Klingon views, that they're always lying, backstabbing, criminal, They put buyers people's arm, they stab people in the back, they poison each other.

Is a little bit built on this gym, right, Like I think you could argue that pretty much all the way up to Gowran and beyond, Like there's honor, sure, but there's a lot of that kind of like just an idea of honor without it actually happening going on. The premiere of this season is there's a spatial anomaly then that never happens, and it forces the Critos crew to face their own toppel gangers from another universe. Right, And that was okay?

To me, the best moment was our Toimerian friend Kashawn's line gramble is his throat split by his misrest. I mean that was you know, I think that was the one that was the one. Legit lap out loud moment for me where I was like, oh my god, that's great. But a lot of good sort of you know, throw off jet Gags' starbas eighty seems to be getting a lot of references, which seems to me like setup. So at some point I think we're going to be seeing learning more about that in episodes to come with me my guests this season, because it seems like that's getting a lot of you know, a lot of a lot of setup, right, is what It seems to me a little for foreshadowing. But it was okay, it was enjoyable, didn't you know? Bowl me over?

So I would be tempted to give it a six, but because I think we need comedy right now really a lot, and I'm just fond of the show in general, I think my reading for this particular episode would be a seven.

I guess, kind of like being watching it, I guess you could say anyway, But yeah, I really liked this episode a lot because it had a lot of a lot of funny lines.

But to me, I think this episode in general had a lot of uh different aspect of like the uh the comedy, the story plot, and all the uh other stuff that they have done in the past kind of like bring up into one episode almost to the point where it's like, yes, it seems like they're kind of recycling with the idea of alternate universities, But this particular one I kind of like because Mariner, even though that's her middle name, uh, she she just wants to go back to being what she used to be. And I like the argument that kept having between whose universe was prime, was it Hours or theirs? And so from their point of view, there was the prime, and so I thought that was kind of interesting. I don't think any other serios actually had anything similar to that. So but yeah, it's uh. The comedy was great.

I agree with a lot of the fans here, you know, just bringing in the whole aspect of comedy. I enjoyed comedy a lot, so to me, I really liked this one. I'm pretty sure I'm missing a bunch of other lines that I wanted to talk about, but I'm pretty sure you guys are bringing it up, so I won't spoil much of anything. I'll let you guys talk, and I'm gonna give this episode a eight point eight. I think, ooh, a little bit higher than our fans. Interesting. Yeah, very interesting. Well, I want to tell you guys, I enjoyed it. I thought it was really well done. I don't know what ultimate universe this particular one was, because they weren't evil and they didn't have goates, and that confused me. Because I like the evil go tea thing.

I did you guys notice that that Billips was a prince in the alternate universe, And remember the significance he was a king. They called him King Phillips. Well, they said there was a point zero eight percent difference between our universe and theres or something like that, like it was very it's supposed to be very. Self and the reason that in order for him he had to lose his virginity in order to become a king. You remember that whole episode with his mother. So obviously in this other universe he did because he's a king.

58:37 So I thought for fans that remembered, that may have cast why he's different in this one, that's why. And I thought that was great. I really was laughing my I literally was laughing my ass off. When when the two Ransoms were arguing with each other and they were calling each other, oh, you sexy bitch, you good look, and hunk, and they were arguing with each other, calling each other all kinds of names. I thought it was hilarious because that's so Ransom. You know, he would do that, and he did do it. So I really liked that, and I liked how they had the Mirror Universe's versions of each character arguing with each other the way they were, you know, argue with themselves. I thought it was very well done and very creative. It was a it was a new spin on an old topic. We've seen lots of Mirror Universe stuff. We just got done with a whole Mirror Universe. Prodigy deal and Lower Decks managed to put a fresh spin on an old story. And I really really enjoyed that. Starbase eighty Well, we'll have to see.

Well, when our characters come and made the choice to go one direction to another, some of these characters went the other choice. He also saw Bradford with a beard and a little bit of the Riker in him. One thing I thought was interesting was the coloration of the uniforms. They were using much darker, a different, slightly different shade of color in there. Look at the two two engineers one last to Kindy and literally we're almost bored comparison for them. One of the things I did catch on one of my researches was the opening credits. Do we notice what got added this

Where Mariner didn't want to be a captain, all of a sudden she was captain in charge even though she didn't want to be in charge, and she was very hostile to her crew compared with friendliness that the other universe would do.

I do like that this one has just kind of like the subtle differences. And I will say that the whole tallinn you know, fascinating remarkable thing is probably the thing that made me to laugh the most at the end where she's like remarkable and they're like ah, and she's like I was messing with you or whatever.

I do think that Lower Decks probably lives and dies on its character interactions and on showing like character growth and that sort of stuff. So I like that Mariner got to see her captain's self, you know, since that's something that she's kind of tried to avoid doing all along the way, and turns out her captain self is maybe, I don't know, a bit of a fascist or something. I'm not really sure what's going on there, but you know, it showed her like at least what another version of herself would be, like all the little subtle differences with rather, you know, like David was saying with Brotherford totally upgrading himself, or Boiler's beard and Boimler was pretty much the same, right.

1:05:39 I think that's what we learned was that there was just a beard involved, and as we go into that second episode, we'll see that there are some things that carry forward from this episode related to the beard. So I guess the one thing that I appreciate about this as a you know, alternate universe episode is that there seems to be or there is definitely a plot that is multi episode developing that's going to tie everything together. And so this is our serial television world, and Lower Decks has added this season this kind of like serial story of what's going on with the weird time fishures. So you know, I'm kind of a little tired of time stuff, but I'm willing to go along because the jokes are the jokes are pretty darn good, you know, the references. Charles did an excellent job of bringing us all the way through there. The only couple that I thought were kind of fun was I always liked the occasional mention of Naomi Wildman right drop it down that she's like ten years old. Yeah, And I don't know if you guys have like get the Star Trek magazine or see the Star Trek magazine at the shop, but it's you know, the cover of the alternate Boimler, like that's basically what the Star Trek magazine looks like. So there was just a nice kind of like, oh, this is exactly what I'm aready buying. We get some tie ins with like the whole Roger Kirby thing a little bit because he mentions in what are little Girls made of?

And I think that this like great plague thing that we learned about in this episode, which was the first time I think we've ever heard about the great Plague on Orion. I think that kind of like has an indirect tie to some of the other stuff that we've seen in previous Star treks. So so I did like that. And yeah, I mean I was the Blue The Blue Orions were great. Yeah, I think I guess I can't really think of too many other things that you guys didn't talk about. You know, the styles like writing crop thing always kind of freaked me out, and the fact that they brought that back here for Marin or just just really cracked me up. Oh oh, I know one other thing I wanted to bring up, uh just and this is a bit right, It's not like a major part of the show, but the bit where where Mariners tied up and she experiences the the other end of the sarcastic vulcan salute. Yeah, that was a nice little like call back to previous seasons.

We always have these utopian societies, right, and you know, you know John Luke Picarten first contact, right, the acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. Right, we're actually sort of saying, well, how do we get there? Right? And it's like they've you know, actually sent out on their mission to help transition away from the capitalist system, which you know, is a pretty fun idea. I would have loved to see them exploit that more though, to make some more satiric commentary about you know, frankly our lives we live in here now because you know, they had them wearing like, you know, T shirts that riffed on notorious b I g right, you know, no money, no problems, right, a little bit of that.

I think, you know, they could have done more stuff with that than I think it would be really really really funny, but you know, I'm not writing on the show. Instead, they spent a lot more time with the old Orion bit right to Erica and learning that Erica was pregnant and parthy and bat milk and all this stuff. Right, It's just I was really glad to see this whole thing that. I mean, I got a joke out of the a chuckle out of the tendy offering herbs, you know, the bedroom slippers that are modeled after the one horned dog from the enemy within.

I love Gabrielle Ruiz as to Lynn. I think she is a phenomenal asset to the show. I feel like the show has kind of improved with the addition of that character because she's such a great deadpan counterpoint for everybody else. Right, she's just, you know, just superb at it. And they're starting to explore her more in these next couple of episodes right where she's getting a chance to show other dimensions.

And I feel your brother, because we really do too. We need to get her back on the show because this whole Orion thing is is is been squeezed dry, and she is great in this, I think the whole thing where you know, she's you know, uh inadvertently you know, fixes the shuttle craft and realizes she's kind of sucked the joy out of you know what he had hoped Brutherford and hoped to be able to do when Tendy comes back, and then she just destroys it and just just rips it apart, and and she's you know, just completely dead been.

And to me, some of the funniest stuff on this episode, the crazy Uh, it's funny. Yeah, but Caprica was the Battlestar Galactica prequel series.

I love those kind of references. I think they're pretty funny. What else, The dogs were great, like I said, the bedroom slipper dogs. But uh, really, I think we're done now with the orions please, and we're gonna have Tendy back on the ship in her uniform where she should be, without their word, where she should be. And I'm really glad that's that's done, assuming it is done completely. I don't need to go back, and I don't need to find out about Erica's baby. I really don't. I'm done.

As much as we can get more of that care actor and worker into the plot more, I think that is great, really really really really good.

We This one just broke my heart because I think I think she's one of the great Klingons, even though she has a lot less screen time than people seem to think that she did. She performed a song called Steel and Flame that's like a metal song but as a cling on So there's some good like cling on metal out there that If you guys haven't seen the music video where she performs that song, you should check it out. I think Mary Chiefo was great, and I love the character of Laurel because she she she brought the character to life, she gave it a personality, and she was written really really well and I love her. She was going on to She was on a panel just before IDW was doing their panel. Idie W was giving away a couple of different posters to people that ask questions. One of the posters was Captain Keilly and the other one was Mary Chiefo and Laurel.
