Was, there was a it was originally there, but there was a revamp that David did where the graphics became a little bigger and a little bit more prominent, and now it's easier to see and kind of like. So I'd just like to make a point in that case before I'd be quiet. All right, you're telling me that in our pre show theme music slide show we have Saturn three but not Planet of the Apes. I get that correct. You're absolutely correct. Yes, okay, that needs to be rectified. I'll be back when it is so, thank you. Sounds like we need a lyrical rewrite. We are a country of apes. Hasn't that been abundantly made clear in the last We are a nation of pre Damn, let's you know, be true to your school.

And with regard to that opening, I will confess that due to I don't know if it's my vision is not great, but I thought that those Star Wars when are they not droids? Those little creatures at the end, Yeah, I thought those were dancing skeletons. I have been keeping that a secret for a while. And the very well, if you you.

Yeah you heard me, correct, guys, pilot episode yes, pilot episode called Kids These Days, and episode two entitled Beta Tests, So we're gonna dive right in and talk about that. Also, we're talking about the new show. That means there's a new theme song. We're going to talk a little bit about that as well. We're going to share that song with you, guys and talk about it if you haven't heard it yet. And there's a brand new Star Trek sixtieth anniversary montage as well that we're also going to talk a little bit about. Yes, Star Trek is sixty. Hard to believe, isn't it. So we have a lot going on, but don't worry, we're still going to squeeze in some fans shout outs. So that's where we get to thank fans just like you around the globe for being fans of ours. We're not going to be doing trivia this week with Uncle Jim because we're going to have fan reactions and fans scores for this week's episode.

I mean, it's so cool, just the way it transforms the colors, the way it kind of zooms and like has that single shot. It's amazing. I love it. The TS Enterprise bridge sound effects at the very very end, which is really cool. Paul, what do you think? Did you like it? Oh? Yeah, it's nice. You know, we've been we've been seeing the same uh, you know, buffer for a while, right, so it's good to see something that's new, and it's it's just good to see them, you knowledging that this is going to be a big deal, the sixtieth anniversary, so all kinds of craziness.

And this is a live action show they're premiering, and it's just you know, it gets too busy. But I liked it nonetheless. It was it was created, it's very good. Now it's the sixtieth anniversary and gave us something different. And so now guys, it's it's that time.

25:19 We have a brand new show. And with a brand new show means we get a brand new theme song and a brand new intro. David roll the tape out. Mm hm. Hm hm hm.

27:28 So there's the new theme saw and the new intro. So Eric, what do you think? Okay, So let's go visual and then audio. So visually I think it's great. I love how it kind of follows in the lines of these kind of credits that have images that sort of morph into scenes that then morph into images and that kind of thing. So I really like the visuals and the way that kind of plays out. I have to admit, this is the first theme song that I haven't been completely in love with the first time I heard it. You know, it has like the quality of it is very nice. It has a very kind of light touch to it. There's a lot of optimism in it. You kind of hear hope in the in the music. You know, it's got a little bit of that kind of like war college military snare drum thing in the background. So I think it has elements of the show and it's trying to kind of like represent the show through the music. It just doesn't have a theme that I can remember. I've listened to it a few times and I can't find the theme, So that that's a little weird for me as a person who is a musician and just like is really locked into things like the music for shows. So yeah, I wish I liked it better. The audio is not it's just not I don't I'm not in love with it, but the visuals are great.

28:59 So I I the first time I heard it, I heard that I lay a theme song from the motion. Oh yeah, the first couple of notes. And I was like, oh wow, and then it quickly changed into I want to say, the Picard flute type of montage from Star Trek to card and then it went into the military snares and there's no theme, there's not a there's there's not a theme song that like Deep Space nine or Voyager or TG that's going to stick in your head that you're going to remember. And that was that was a disappointment that it doesn't actually have a theme song that I could play as a clip, like when we're doing trivia with Uncle Jim and I'm doing Buck Rogers and the different shows. I don't think I could do. There's not a recognizable theme. Unfortunately minor drawback, very very minor. But I would have liked to hear a theme song that was more recognizable and more more closer to a traditional theme, not like, you know, it's been a long road getting from there to hear.

30:03 Type something're talking about that. You know what is does something like they did with you know Something Classically, it should have brought Shatner. Shatner come up with something, But that's just my opinion. But I do like the visuals of Start Free academy being built, and the whole thing is really really well done. Paul, what do you think your your your audio experts. Yeah, I'm really a lot more interested in talking about the show than the credits, right, to be frank, but. I thought that was fine. It's it's fine, right, It's just you know, I like the idea that it starts with an image of a seed, because that's really the you know, thematic element of what it does about, right, growing from infancy, through training and growing and becoming indult in the seeds that we plant today, if we you know, kindle them appropriately and take care of them, they'll grow into something impressive and enduring period.

31:02 So you know, I think it's good, you know, and you know, it's I can't think of an example in Star Trek, but there are the TV shows that have started off with like, you know, one set of opening credits and then they're sort of going to maybe need to finesse this a little bit. I think they've done that a couple of times in Abo, where it's just like, you know, look at the credits until they kind of you know, finance something. So maybe this will stick around, maybe it won't, who knows, but it conveys what it needs to do. But you know, yeah, so you know, it's a different it's a different era, So I'm fine with them. They're fine their credits.

31:43 What do you think me? I liked it. I saw the seed knowing, you know, what I learned about the burn and everything like that, that they're starting new and new life and you know, new civilizations to orrow a term. Yeah, I liked it since that it was because I'm not I'm sorry, Eric, I'm not a fan of the Enterprise theme music just so jarring. This was more in line with it, And I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who heard the Aliah theme, just a couple of notes that I heard there quickly. It's pretty yeah, but you're right, it isn't particularly memorable, but who knows, maybe they'll change it.

32:29 But it was a really that they put a lot of thought and effort into into, you know, the whole starting over and building and here we are. What was cool about it was what made me think that Aiah theme. And Paul can correct me, or anyone can correct me if I'm wrong. But when the credits come on and we see Starford Academy logo, for the first time. Is that not the exact same logo that we saw in the director's cut of Star trekor motion picture? Is that the same letters lettering that we saw. I mean, it's kind of a standard Star Trek font, but yeah, I do believe that it was the one that they used in the director's cut.

33:17 Yeah, and that made me think right away of the motion picture, that's where that came from. Well, David, what about you? Yeah. I think the reason why we can't really burn it to our heads mind the punch is the fact that it is a mixture of a bunch of different theme songs from different Star Treks jewies. I mean, I actually thought, for some reason that I thought I heard the card. I thought I heard a little bit of Prodigy and a little bit of maybe a tiny tiny bit of the next Generation. But I mean they're all kind of like that French horn anyway. So it's just kind of like, I think, the more we listen to it, the more it's gonna be ahead.

34:06 But I actually enjoyed it. I liked it, which cool. So yeah, all right, Charles, you get the caboose on this one. Then we'll roll right into cadet training. Well, I always I kind of like the visuals to it. It reminded me of Discovery. Good Discovery always built their theme on what the season was about, so we got to see that real change in each Each season's got their own credit form. So I don't mind it. I think it's early enough for me not to really get hooked on a theme. Yet as we see it more and more, I think I'll start getting a little more into the theme. But I'm giving it time.

34:55 All right, guys. So that's uh. The Chuck Spurts breakdown on the theme and the opening credits, and now we get to the part of the show that we've been waiting for. We haven't had cadet training in a long time, and Charles take it away cadet training for episode one, kids these days? Okay, well what is okay? First of all, especially for those that have forgotten, what is this cadet training? Well, I take a look at the episode and then I look and say, oh, okay, I'm looking for Easter eggs, but these Easter eggs I want to tie into other Star Trek episodes or series. And one of the real good, definite examples on this one is that Discovery season three, when we basically say what is the burn? You go back to season three and you understand what happened, Why did the burn occur? And why did Starfleet have this jump where they stopped and they're now reft and some of the characters. I really got into this episode Strange New Worlds.

36:09 Pellia. Why am I picking Pellia because Pellia is a Lanthian? Oh? Why is that important? Because Chancellor a Key is also part Lanthian. So we've got another character that is many, many years old. She's talking with several at least a few hundred. I don't know exactly, but it's interesting to hear some of her stories and comparing how long she's been Around DS nine, we're gonna go back the Dominion War. Who are these Gemahdar people? Well, we learned about the Gemmadar in the Dominion War and why because number one is half Jemadar and half Klingon. We go back in history quite a bit for the one Voyager when we had the EMH emerging medical Hologram the doctor. The doctor is back with a little bit of aging to him.

37:18 And of course Discovery season three to five, what's this about programmable matter? Well, that's when we learned about what programmable matter is and what we can do with it. And one more character that caught my at tension and I'm rather liking that they're there. We're going to go back to the tos. Let this be your last battlefield with the charine ones that are half black, half white. If you look in the Cadets, we have one of these beings there and make the comment thinking they survive because we thought the last two of those two were going to kill each other off. That society had to have survived or came back. But she is definitely prominent several times in the scene with the cadets.

38:18 And that gets me. With the end of the Cadet review for this chapter, I believe we're going to pass it over to Paul and talk about the episode recap. Thank you, Charles, I appreciate that. Sarah. Okay, well, gosh, friends, it's true we have a double scoop helping of this new series, Starfleet Academy, and there's a lot to talk about with this. So let's first of all focus on the initial episode Kids these Days. This is Jim mentioned the pilot, so this is kind of branching off within the same universe that Discovery took place, right, And as everyone's mentioned earlier, right, we were in the kind of still formative stages after what was referred to as the Burn, we kind of rebuild the Federation. The Federation isn't what it used to be, right, and so the idea is we want to sort of, you know, right, direct them, create more stability, more alliances, more protection, dare I say it, more enlightenment, right, And so Admiral Vance comes in and basically his explaining to you know us and the woman nala At, who's portrayed by Holly Hunter, who will talk a lot more about, right. She's resigned from Starfleet over a past injustice that we learned about in a little prologue sequence to this episode involving a young boy being separated from his mother. And if that doesn't resonate to you right now, I got nothing for you. I got

39:50 no hope for you. But there you go. But she's looking for redemption and Admiral Vance offers it in terms of like he sees a lot of you know, long skills and character in her that would make her perfect. Again, we're talking about Holly Hunter here as Chancellor Starfleet Academy, and so he offers her this post, right, And so it's a very high stakes, character focused series. A lot of what we're talking about thematically in the start of the show is we're overcoming the darkness of the past. We're trying to create unity, and we're nurturing a new generation of Starfleet officer to help rebuild a very factored galaxy so they can have a federation again. That little boy who is separated from his mother grows up to be a very much a young twenty one year old lone wolf dude who's been of like running around the galaxy as a petty criminal. He holds a deep grudge against Naake Holly Hunter, right, because he blames her for his mother's being you know, taken away from him right at the doing of Starfleet.

41:03 Right. So he's not a big Starfleet fan at this point. Right. But Commander Aka is a very convincing person, and she says, give this a try. It's a good chance for you. And this is this whole idea of somebody who's been you know, needs one last chance. I mean, it's an old, you know, movie situation that we've seen before. And so she convinces him to give Starfleet a chance rather than go to jail. Come to come to come to Starfleet, try it out, let's see what happens. Right. So he's like the main character, a guy named Caleb Meir, right, And along with Chancellor ak Right, we have a faculty at the Starfleet Academy that we get to know. Right.

41:45 We have everyone Charles mentioned Harbor coming back as the doctor. There's the Ema once again. Right. A really interesting character, Laura Thok Right, she's the number one. She's basically the cadet mass if you will, like somebody would have as a drill instructor. Right, and she is half Klingon and really really just striking character, really really interesting. We talked a little bit about her background already, but really interesting mix of characters and fresh faces that make up the Cadets. We'll talk a lot more about that, and we'll talk about the conflict because there's a lot of younger people are going to have conflicts about each other. Is they all want different things and they're being taught to unify and put their differences aside and cooperate on this show, which is pretty amazing. And there's a nemesis there is a wily pirate out there played by Paul Giamatti called noose Braka. He's got a grudge against both nala Ake and the Federation, and so during one of their first voyages out. One of the unique things about this show is basically the Academy itself exists in two domains. There's Starfleet Academy in San Francisco that's being rebuilt, right, but the ship itself that they're going there on is actually like the ship is a training facility itself, so a lot of what they're doing is involves being on a ship and dealing with what happens when you're in spaceflight.

I'll talk more about my thoughts on the show when it's appropriate, but I just think it was a fascinating and from my perspective, very welcome I returned to for him for Star Tracks horrific pilot episode, but we'll talk about the second one later on. The nostalgia hit just right, from the nod to the original Enterprise crew with the humpback Whales to the return of Voyager's emh the Doctor and the Captain. Absolutely fantastic. A living witness to Starfleet history and its compromises with a sharp sense of humor that made her instantly memorable.

Adorable, awkward, totally out of place, and incredibly relatable. Watching her try to learn social norms and humor had me laughing out loud more than once. This is actually the first series that I loved at the first episode, and I go back way back to tos first episode airing. Thanks Jeffrey.

I felt totally out of place, trying to figure out, Okay, how do I pretend to be a normal human being with these other students. So I really, I really liked that character. The one thing, though, I will say, that put me off. And you know, I like, I like some good swearing, but I think there was a little too much. It was. It was just too much. It was just a little bit off putting. And like I said, I love a good curse word. And now I understand in Star Trek Lower Decks when they bleeped everything out that actually made it more funny. But you know, went along with the with the animated show. But yeah, they just if they could just dial back, I think, like I saw some other reviews online and said, I think I agree with the person who said it took me out of the moment because it was just too contemporary.

And to me, this episode seemed a little it seemed a little too fast paced for me because even though it was longer than an hour. The idea of getting to know the villain from the beginning to the end just seemed like there was a lot of machine parts because I didn't quite understand exactly why if he was even around at the time. I mean, I know that he was supposed to be a pirate, I guess in some ways, but it just seemed a little fast to me for some reason, and it was just the villain for some reason, just didn't cut it for me. I mean, I like Paul Giamati. I really liked him in the Planet of h He's a really good character actor as well. And the character he played Half Clean on Half tellerte supposed to be like a what did you call it, a kleanote or something like that, and I'm like, that's pretty interesting. But to me, the

It's because if you've ever read David Eddings books, he's got a person described as a shad Dar, which is a person that has a rare ability to communicate with horses. So they just got that name, and they like flipped it up, so I think maybe that's an homage that was a little Eastern bandicot, because I was like, when I know that name, yeah.

She's a drill sergeant that we've not seen a number one that was that tough on cadets. But I like that. I like that she's got that strength to her. I want to know what happened with a Jemadar. The Geminha have come back and they're meeting with another species. I want to know this story on this and of course it hasn't been brought up.

58:32 I will bring it up that we talk about our chancellor and she kind of just relaxes in the chair. She's technically one of the she's technically the oldest captain we've ever had on a ship. Our captains are usually in their forties fifties, not multiple one hundred years old. I'm sure if Pelly had decided to go sit in the captain's chair, she might get a little comfortable and sit where she's comfortable and sitting. I know people who are bothered by it.

I loved hearing one of the crew members say that. It's like, Okay, that's a professor saying that. What am I gonna go with this episode? I'm gonna go with the death that solid nine.

I mean, that opening scene is intense, and it's funny because we saw bits of that I think in trailers before this now, but I never it never occurred to me that the mother was Tatiana Maslani from Orphan Black that I just watched it this time, I was like, well, that's who that is. Anyway, it was kind of cool to see her and something again.

It just feels like there's a lot of room to grow, there's a lot of room for hope. And I think the setting, you know, in a college, with these kids who are kind of transitioning from being kids into being adults and learning new skills and not only that but like rebuilding the Federation at the same time, it has this kind of like automatic optimism, sort of building aspect to it that I really really like. You know, I think that when we got into Discovery and the Burn and all that kind of stuff, it was kind of like, oh my god, that not only has the world weighed me down, but like everything sucks in Starfleet too. So it's kind of nice to have the antithesis of this going on in this show. You know, David, I get that there's like some some high school slash college humor in here.

So that so maybe maybe there's just an aspect of me that just doesn't mind that that type of character interaction. I think for me, what it is is it's watching people discover themselves on screen, you know, watching them form new relationships, watching them find out how they're strong inside, make mistakes. I can't disagree with one of our fan reviewers who was talking about Sam the new Photonic character, Like, as soon as she was on the screen and started talking, I just got this gigantic smile on my face, and I sort of got every time she showed up on the screen, I couldn't help but smile and just like be complete, even that hard where she's kind of like, you know, I don't think people I don't remember what she said, I don't think people like me, or I don't think people get me, or something like that, and it was kind of like this moment of doubt. Even then I was still just loving it.

Yeah, where she's she's you know, a little socially awkward, but she she also kind of has. I love the idea that she's really young but has been programmed to act in a certain way, but then can grow from that programming. It's almost like taking the doctor and you know, putting him on speed more in four months, she's trying to, you know, become something different from what she started out as. So fascinating character. In fact, I really like how they introduced pretty much all the characters on the show. Like I said, I love the opening scene with Caleb and the mom and just how heart wrenching it was. Really like it just kind of, you know, hits you right in the fields. And then when we we get him back at the academy, he's got this kind of like huge chip on his shoulder. And what you see is you see people at the academy not punishing him for being who he is. Right they start to work with him.

They you know, they don't try to punitively make kids do things. They help kids discover why they should do things in a certain way. The one thing I'll say is so I really like Holly Hunter, and I like all of the Cadet characters. The I agree with the that Paul GI Matti is chewing this scene or as hard as he positively can.

Right So now it's just kind of a waiting game of we're gonna have a couple episodes of cool stuff happening at the Academy, and then the Pirate's gonna come back at some point probably, So that's probably the aspect of the show that I'm the least interested in at the moment. Ship's cool writing school, you know, this this particular episode didn't like break gigantic ground, but I think it was a really solid kickoff, So I'll give it an eight.

So I was a little nervous, right, because we still have a lot of the same creative people behind the scenes, right, And so I was very, very nervous. And I was just from pretty much the first, you know, thirty seconds of this episode all the way through the first two that I've seen. I was absolutely delighted at the direction they took. I thought this was extremely held on. I think Alex Kurtseman directed both of these. I think, if I'm not mistaken, right, So I'm curious to see what happens with other directors taking this cast and everything. But it was just terrific.

And she's right. I like her.

Right where he's not just the pirate, you know, over the top. You know, you got to have a big fight scene and whatnot, right, But he's a lot of fun and everything is great. How do you use that ongoing antagonist given the stability of the dynamic that we see in the Academy, which is just wonderful. I thought there were some just amazing moments.

And I'm sorry I don't have the names all memorized yet, but our Klingon character, Jane, he's like kind of a passive this clingon. He's a bird watcher, he's a healer. He's a healer, he's a klingon. He's got the strength of a heat can cling on. But he's kind of gentle, right, and he's just like, you don't turn your back on your friends, right, that's his strength, that he believes in right and time after time. The show is espousing values that I think that are just so desperately needed and a healthfully right and it's very hopeful. Though. I found myself laughing way more than I thought I would throughout this show. I've never rolled now is a really anything other than some unfortunate CV and too, But we'll get to that. Well. I was thought this was a triumph.

They're very charismatic, hopeful of being going through you know, yeah, they're young people, right, but I think that the you know, what they're going through is really relatable, you know, to folks through remember their youth and we don't have all their ship ware together as an adult. So very relatable. Yeah, me too. I don't think we ever did kidding yourself otherwise, but they're very relatable. I am. You know, when they played you know, the San Francis goes on as their returning I mean, come on, can there be yep beautiful achievement?

It's just like, oh ready, a little pribaby. But you could just see the ground swell of affection that was able to just ascend beyond all that. And I think people really like this show. I just think she did a remarkable job. He's just such a great actress. And I hope they literally let her do some cool stuff here. But I just love slump in that chair for as many seasons as you can, sister, Just just do it, you know, and do your own thing.

Paramount has traditionally just given us two episodes back to back. Here's your pilot. That's not a pilot. That is not a pilot. This episode was a pilot in the true sense of the word pilot. We meet the characters, they come together, we learn about them, they're on their mission, they leave one point, they get the point B. That's the end of the episode. It's a pilot, it's a true pilot. And I love the fact that they respected us enough to give us a pilot. They showed us the world, they showed us the ship. We got to hear Stephen Colbert on the PA system talking about not to Geno being servant about.

We even got to see the the snail headed aliens that we saw on Star Trek beyond singing with the Doctor, which I thought was great. I like how they went out of their way to tie every Star Trek series into it, including Rock Top.

And every Star Trek show we've ever seen, they're already at the end. We don't get to see them getting there, getting from there to hear it.

And later on in the episode, when they're out training and it's in the and she's yelling about fear and my cadets will not be afraid and they will not have fear, and she goes up to the girls standing on the starts screaming in her face.

How they carry her her dead pan, like her arguments she's had with Stammens. They kind of carried that character. They've kept her the same, which I think is great. I can't think of and I work in a school now, and I can tell you that the teachers at the school they called me the star Trek guy, and they're they're all coming up to me and telling me how much they really like Starfleet Academy because it feels like a school and they can watch it with their kids.

Oh I did want to mention one other thing. They have learned their lesson out of time. Yeah on streaming. Did you guys notice that the first episode, the pilot was seventy six minutes and episode two was fifty eight minutes. So they're not cutting them at forty minutes or thirty six minutes.

Oh definitely, even though somebody did tease one of my tidbits already. But one of the things, first off, that who in this group didn't get a little teary eyed when we go back to TNG first duty and the first time we met Booth B. If you look on. The Starfleet Academy grounds, there's a booth me memorial sitting there, and who didn't get a little teary by thinking they remembered Booth B. In this episode, Prodigy, we see a character similar to Rock as we just said, it's a brick car. It's a nice to see that species coming out.

1:26:01 And then of course I like going this way. Let's go to lower decks and no small parts where we have an XO comp. We've got an EXO comp coming through here. Again, It's like, it's nice to see the exo comp still around. Two definitely for people to study. Tng Deanna Troy and I should put in there a little Walksana Troy and gives you, guys an idea of studying the betazoids, because the betazoids are definitely a high point in this episode. And you get an idea where we originally cut up and started creating these based the betasoid theme. And of course for my favorite and kind of adding a little tag for me, unlike Gem's Star Trek four the Voyage Home, the humpback whales are still around the thirty second century. It's good to see that those whales are still around, and one's pregnant again. Gee, I think we've heard of the pregnant whale before. But Paul, what did happen in this episode.

So the second episode is called Beta Test, and there's a little play on words there, of course, because we're talking a lot about Betazad in this episode, right, And this continues the whole focus on rebuilding the Federation after the burn, right with Earth and Betazed looking at trying to do some reuniting here. And we get a lot of Admiral bents in this episode, which is nice, and the insane timing of this episode is just wild. I think that's this show did a lot of things with eerie synchronicity that I'll talk about, but a lot of what's going on in this particular episode is trying to negotiate things with the very skeptical delegation from Beta Z, right, including the main you know ambassador from Betaze himself, right, and it is it's President Sada, I believe his name is, right, And the idea is we want Beta Zed to rejoin the Federation, but they're extremely skeptical of us, to the point that they've built i mean heavy metaphor alert, they've built a wall to protect themselves from you know, outside influences. A psionic wall, if you will, all right, And so the idea is, how can we get this very reticent society that has lost their ability to trust us to you know, re

1:28:55 cement relations, right, And I mean everything that's been going on in the world around us this last week, in the last forty eight hours, right with the summits and things. It's uncanny how relevant it is to the world we live in today. And I think this episode deserves special praise because it really shows that through God's old fashioned tenets of like cooperation, the decency, compromise, the spots rising tide, lifting all boats right, the diplomacy right, it really shows you know, people working together to the benefit of all, which we really need to hear these days. Right. And so this is an incredibly relevant episode to what's going on, excuse me, in global society right now and within this last week in particular, so really wild. So there's a lot of negotiations going on with President Sadal excuse me.

1:29:54 But meanwhile, Caleb, who's still kind of very much anti authority at this point, right trouble left and right, thinking he might just blow down and leave right, get done right, he still wants to find his mother right, and he's not sure he can really just focus and do all the Starfleet Academy things he needs to do. He forms this interesting bond with Tarima Sadal, right, who's President Sadal's daughter, right, Who's a striking influence on him and really exactly what he needs, right. And I would not dismiss their relationship as team romance angst. I mean, there's a bit of that, but I really like what they did with their It was really really cool. There's a little bit of a romantic connection, of course there is, right, but there's and there's conflict because she thinks at one point that he's I won't get in all the details of the plot, but she she's worried that, you know, Caleb is like using her to get information, right. But there is just some great campus life stuff going on here with the EMH characters dealing with mundane things, them trying to get people to join the campus opera club. Like star our Fleet Academy has all these different clubs and things going on to try to create culture and create bonding in the community. How refretting is that? And I thought it was really a nice thing too. Without hitting anybody over the head with it right that the President Sadal uses like sign language communicate, right, he's a telepath, has like a little device that allows you know, like the interpretation of his sign language into like audible speech, so you

So it was a real uh you know, victory for the disability community to have that featured so prominently. I thought that was outstanding, so really, really great. I just think this was a really cool episode. I love the fact that they did show the whales. Damn, that was unfortunate. CG. Though, Wow, that was not ready, not ready. Like with every amazing It was almost like they didn't. It was it was like worse than you'd see on like I hate to say it, but worse than you'd see on lower decks. I mean, it was just like, you know, they could have had lower decks whales and it would have looked more realistic. I was like, but you know, it's what six seven million dollars an episode.

But you know, I was still able to suspend disbelief because it was a really nicely written scene, right, and the actors, you know, screw the computer generated stuff, right, the actors, the two of them, in their charisma and chemistry really sold me and I wanted things to work out for them. And at the end a wonderful compromise is I don't want to spoil it in case you haven't seen the episode, but but you know, Hubris and Ego are abandoned in the interest of trying to make someone else's feel more comfortable about the future in their society. I thought that was a brilliant move that they did there to win Betazeed's trust, to give trust to them, and I thought that was just outstanding. This is the kind of television we need right now, all right, And I really just continue to love these characters in here.

Discovery and Enterprise suffered from the same thing bad casting, meaning none of the character actors or characters really had much chemistry, unlike Strange New Worlds, where there are multiple characters that are of interest and play well off one another. Chapel And and Benga are the prime example.

So I'm glad to still stee it in there. One of the species I saw in here, and to add in Kelpian, I saw Kelpian in there, and that actor still had the arm waves in the back.

To see them kind of wandering the academy and see what the academy was like. I loved going in and seeing some of these places astrometrics going down and seeing the whale habitat. Yeah, they could have done a little better job with that, but hey, it still gave me the impression that I could still kind of know. It's like, okay, those are that's the whale, and they talk about the pregnancy. It's like, okay, I'm not worrying about the visual. It still gives me the impression to realize that they're still there and how they go through negotiations with these with these dealings, especially with the negotiator that you can kind of tell doesn't want to change, and they take bats about how he wants

1:43:05 Yeah, agreeing with much of what people are saying. I kind of saw like three main sort of themes being explored in the episode. There's like the whole betazoid diplomatic thing, which as a fan of Deep Space nine, that idea of an episode based on political intrigue was very interesting to me, and I'm willing to like watch them stand there and debate one another back and forth. I thought that was really really compelling. I've seen people complain about the fact that he's using ASL and I saw somebody else say, well, actually, it kind of makes sense because as telepassed, the Betazoids would never need a visual language, right, they could just talk to each other through their heads. So when they had to adapt one, they took the one that the Federation was using, which was ASL. So you know, no, it's not a Betazoid language, but a Betazoid is using it. So I kind of liked that headcanon on that, So that whole thing was great. I loved the the fact that he came to say no and that he eventually was turned around through compromise. So just that's the way it should be. That's the way we should talk with one another, that's the way we should move through the world exactly. Just was resonated very well for me. The second one, the kind of like Caleb and Tarima thing just very sweet, you know, they're kind of like exploring one another's personalities, cute little banter things, humor looks. So just as a kind of romantic subplot

I also thought the kind of how she felt betrayal, you know, from him, once he learned that, or once she learned that he was just trying to find the planet, the Gojia five planet where his mom was supposed to be, but she did help him, so you know, I mean, look at those arms, who wouldn't. But so, just a really cute story. And then as the third part that I just thought was really cool was like the whole academy in the atmosphere. You know, you've got great characters. You guys have already said like Thok, who's amazing, just a drill sergeant like pounded it in and we how could she be so like hard ass and we love her so much. I just it's like, that's such a cool dynamic. We learned that there's something called the War College, which got me kind of thinking about Makos and like enterprise and that sort of thing, and the split between military and federation.

1:45:29 So I think that's kind of an interesting thing that out of the burn comes this war college thing, and I would love to explore that a little bit more, like I can see some some war college federation kind of like you know, friction happening at some point in an episode. So just very interesting concept. And then yeah, the couple of familiar faces that we saw was great to see Pacardo, was great to hear him sing again, which we got to hear on voyager and that was kind of like at a great scene where it was nice and extended. You know, it starts with them singing, it pans down to the party, it shows them again, it pans down to the party, it shows them again. I just like that kind of It's very it feels like a period piece, like you're watching something on Hallmark Channel.

He was actually discovered by Paramount because he was involved in like propaganda films for the military, so that's kind of how he was found. And he always was Gene Rodberry's first choice for doctor, but it was other producers that kept bringing in other characters.

So a few months prior to making his appearance and encounter at farpoint, Kelly expressed skepticism about the next generation. He said, it's a mystery to me why they're all doing it. He remarked, I assume Paramount thinks they can hold on to that Star Trek phenomena. There's no doubt it can't go on forever.
