They're like tiny, little two inch people. It's it's like very much like the old Richard Matheson picture right, the incredible Shrinking Man. And so it was just basically they took that idea and just riffed it off into a TV show, but really really fun. I mean, you know you can still watch it in enjoyable Asack Irwin Allen knew how to enter game people man he was he was a shellman.

So that brought us up the survey with Uncle Jim. And now we're going to move into a corner talk about Lower Decks eight and nine. And for that we're going to turn to Paul give us a quick a quick run down, and uh, then we'll dig right in and talk about the issue.

49:29 Okay, friends, comic time, and some of us still prefer the tangible magic of the go to your comic book shop, uh paper comic. Right, And so we are talking about issue number eight of the awesome Lower Decks series from our good pals at I d W there. And this particular book eight that we're talking about here concludes a two part flashback story that began in issue seven, where Captain Carol Freeman Captain el Freeman, as we know, Mariner's mom, recounts her time as in when she was an ensign to her daughter Beckett Mariner. Right, So the story focuses on Ensign Freeman. Then Ensign Freeman and Ensign Durango rising to the challenge when their USS Illinois is in peril during a clash with the Romulans. Right, and so she's basically trying to just convey bonding wise to her daughter.

50:26 You know that. Yeah, you know, I too was once and nobody screw up, and there's a lot of mother daughter bonding on the cerritos is like a framing deal, right. And so during a patrol along the Romulin neutros zone, the Illinois is engaged by a Romulan warbird, right, and surprise, surprise, This is where my good friend Eric gets a little excited because a lot of this whole comic is all about doctor Catherine Pulaski. Right, Actually, I am a commander what And she takes over, right and becomes commander of the ship, and the rest of the crews kind of disappeared because of some kind of unsanctioned transport experiment that's going on, Right, we don't really need to worry about that.

51:08 But because Freeman disagrees with Pulaski's tactics, Freeman takes responsibility for rectifying the situation, and they decide to try to outwit the Rymulins by retrieving their missing crew members before they can be killed, either all at once or one by one or in by volume, whatever method of efficiency, the Rhemulins decide to go for right, and then a little twister Rooney at the end there doctor Pulaski's revelation that her actions were deliberate and she was trying to manipulate the ends and solve problems themselves, to step up and exhibit their potential for leadership. And then at the very end there was a funny bit. I'm betting David has an image of it right on the holodeck, and Carol's taking them on her version of a crazy Holodex ski program.

52:01 Pumped through it in honor of Eric's favorite CMO, A giant crazy daredevil ski mountain that's shaped like doctor Pulaski's you know, magnificently quaft hair, which was never so magnificently quaft on the show, but boy, it sure was quafft in that last panel. So a lot of good romulent stuff in here, pretty goofy. Definitely a good outing for doctor Pulaski fans, wouldn't you say? Yeah? I mean, it was nice to see her featured in the last couple of issues. You know, was she written as doctor Pulaski would actually be written. I'm not so sure, but I think it was okay, because you know, the story is really all about the fun and ridiculousness of things that happened on the Serritos. So yeah, I absolutely love seeing her. She's kind of mysterious. And then that ending with like it was all just to dream. I mean, I was just like testing you. You know, Okay, you.

53:05 Know she's pretty wacky. She is very wacky in terms of she's depicted, right, she is. She's kinda she's kind of out there a little bit. I mean, she says things that Pulaski wouldn't necessarily say. But you know, this is Pulaski of the few. Well actually, so technically speaking, if you remember that by the end of this comic, we are reminded that this is actually Carol's recounting of what happened. So one potential out here is that Carol remembers things, you know, slightly differently from how they actually occurred, and so maybe the Pulaski we're seeing is the Pulaski that Carol Freeman sees when she looks at Pulaski, So I contend this is not the real Catherine Pulaski. Still like, generally I enjoyed this issue.

53:56 Oh yeah, look at that he's got both Mariner and Freeman. Generally I like this one. You know, the the ending scene where they're on Mount Pulaski is pretty cool. Yeah. Overall, I don't know. I can't give it too much more than like a six or a six and a half. Maybe I'll give it a six and a half. Despite the fact that I loved that Pulaski was part of this, it just kind of felt a little bit flat at the end. But I'm really excited to talk about the next one. But anyway, that's enough about this one for me. Somebody else, go. You want to jump in? Sure? No, that was you missed the part about when they when they knock her out, when they stun her with a phaser, and then they're going to transport her into the brig and she would they would remove her clothings so she would be naked, but pretty much nobody wanted to see that, So that was hope.

Yeah, because she had a transporter inhibitor sony into her uniform so she can make sure nobody could transport her off the ship.

Yeah, She's like, oh yeah, I'm gonna sit there. I want to convince the crew to kind of work on themselves. And by the way, I think it's kind of funny the fact that when you think it's a transporter problem, and it's like, yeah, and it's a transport problem that Carol Friedman created herself trying to get out of something past Pulaski's uh inhibitor of trying to keep people from slacking off and going out to the going out and had a little too much fun when they should be resting or working. Definitely.

56:54 I love the fact that when they tried tricker into changing uniforms so she doesn't have the inhibit her on her yet she gets to a point where she gets to it, gets to a transporter, and doesn't seem to mind it. Interesting. I'm not sure about the Romulns would kind of fall for this kind of deal. I'm not sure how they end up capturing the crew in the first place. But here with Eric, the story is pretty good. Maybe about seven point five.

So but the things that a couple of things she says as and as John Luke Picard always says shit happens, which of course he never did. And then at the very end, a very another something that Jean Luke Picard did say when shoot, I can't even read my own writing. And I forget which episode that was, but those were the things that just stuck out at me, just those those little lines. But I mean, I thought it was funny. I was not expecting because I was just expecting Pulaski to continue to be, you know, just sort of nefarious, and then at the end it's like, surprise, I was just testing you because I'm not well. I like the part where she said I'm used to treating one person at a time, you know, not not watching over a whole ship. So yep. And I mean, let's face it, having a mountain to ski down that looks like your face, I mean that's just great. So I'll go with seven point five.

It was a continuation from the last Pulaski episode seven, Book seven. I think it is what we talked about a while ago last year, I think. But yeah, going back between the two in reading him in chronological order, it's interesting to go through and seeing how the different stories take place and the different what not happened, and then the ambulance show up, and I thought that was kind of fun. And so yeah, there's a lot of different Easter age for sure in this particular episode. Keep calling an episode book, magazine, whatever you want to call it, comics, there you go. I don't know why I had an issue with.

This particular one was I'm trying to remember if that because I just read it today and I read the other one and I'm trying to remember what all went down, but funny parts and the parts that stuck out. I think you got pretty much covered a lot of the funny parts already, where it's just like the different types of things that were going on with the whole the uniform, and of course I like the iteration with three men, the mom and the daughter at the end there and how Mariner was like super worried about the mom because it looked like she was just like in a drug trant almost, And so I thought that was pretty funny. So but yeah, overall, I'd have to give this one a seven. Wasn't as great as I thought it was gonna be, but I mean it was about there.

That's because that's because a while ago Ryan North uh No longer was the writer, and so since they changed writers. A in my opinion, the quality of the book has gone down overall just a little bit. And b just the format is different. You don't have those anymore.

Okay, so this particular issue opens with a really wacky that turns out to be devan attendee's crazy dream that she's having right where everything is perfect.

1:05:07 She's just everything is wonderful and the food is good, and she's just well liked and everything's going well, and she's even discovered a plant loaded with liquid dilithium, right, and she's on such close terms with the Captain that she's able to affectionately refer to Captain Freeman as care Bean, which I don't know if we've ever heard have we ever heard that on the show or is that new to. The comic, But now that's new to the comic. Yeah, I thought that was pretty you know, Carol Freeman is care Bear. I'm like, that's pretty hilarious. Right, And her lovely rhapsodic dream is interrupted by a private hail from the Federation President that turns into an explosive eruption of Gorman Gander droppings, right, and give the full two page panel. It's one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen, okay, And of course we've seen the Gorman gander before, right, originally on Discovery and then later in Picard.

The space whale name Gorman gander may actually have been taken from Norse mythology, friends, where the Yorman gander is also known in the English parlance as the Midguard serpent. And God help you if that stops, because if he releases his tale, it's a sign that Ragnarok is nigh, if you will. So I think that's where the name came from.

Second, there are really there, really are Well allow me to report, I do I need to start, like, you know, pointing them out. Yeah, I mean it's all over the place, right, I mean, it's just it's yeah. So to me was just like, but I'm digressing horribly as tend is all freaked out, right, Why is she freaked out having these weird dreams and friends out. She's trying to hide dozens of subspace messages that she's been frantically deleted so no one knows about them. Right, She's not sleeping because she's having all these crazy dreams which are all about lowing money to a Ferengi loan shark, get it, loan shark.

1:07:59 The image now is coming together, right, And so we learn in this rather lengthy flashman right that when Tendy was going to Starfleet Academy aka school the Ferengi would call it, she wanted to go. She's all proud of herself and she doesn't want to think that she be thought of as relying on the coattails of her parents, so she wants to get there on her own without taking help from her parents. So she borrows money from this loopy Ferengi person, and now years later she's in Ferengi collections and she owes them a butt on of latinum, right, and Damon Glam is the Ferengi in question here, And of course glom means to seize or get hold of something, right, so English and that know what your words mean if you can glam on too, right, And so Damon Glom shows up with a bunch of Ferengi starships demanding let Tendy be handed over to them or die, right, And that's basically the cliffhanger that the issue ends on. So I think a lot of your rating acceptance level on this particular issue will be dependent on your fondness for Devon at Dandy on one hand, and your lack of ability to tolerate huge piles of excrement. And you're reading material.

1:09:23 So I'm kind of in the middle on that. I will weigh in later. But where did you stand on this whole thing? Eric? I have to say that I really liked this issue. I find tend to be incredibly delightful overall and just an entire issue dedicated to her is something that I don't mind one bit. You know, I kind of knew at the beginning when weird stuff was happening that it was eventually all going to be a dream. But I didn't mind it somehow, despite the fact that I often complained about it was only just a dream type things. But there were some great jokes in here, great funny moments, the whole thing about like some people getting per diems in star like. I still like they've complicated the whole like finance of Starfleet so much that I love it.

But also there were a couple of references because I love Tendy and you know, I love to Lynn having met Gabrielle and you know, doing the yeah all that. But did anybody catch when Tendy is reminiscing about going to

So this one, I don't know, I just it just cracked me up. It was just hilarious and the whole confusing, the whole money thing, like do we need it, don't we need it? Oh we get a per diem, don't you? But we get definitely an interesting history, Definitely an interesting little backstory, a little bit Tendy's backstory. Definitely an interesting idea of what's going on. And I think. The conversation with the money was interesting that we kind of deal with U, No, they're not making income. They're not they're not getting a group, they're not getting especially they're not getting a bonus for joining Starfleet, which the FERENGI think they're getting, and that these these these Starfleet officers are rich. It's like, no, they're not. So definitely, when we're done with the episode, I got to go back and read, go go through and read reading nine.

But I definitely be ready for the show and for this eight point five, and I definitely like the Tindy side of it because I'm definitely a big Tindy fan. Uh right, well then what do you think? Yeah, I liked this. I have a shorty issue. This. I agree with the Charles. I am kind of a Tindy fan as well. I like her energy, I like her attitude. I like her overall almost oblivious sense of like what's going on around her almost but what's out and everything plans out and whatnot. So yeah, as far as this whole poop situation, oh, I have to bring it up. I'm not really too much into the whole throw OpEd up either, but if they can make it funny, it's funny. You know, it gets me and it can make me laugh. And I've actually laughed out loud reading this issue.

Ransom? Yeah, So what made me read this line over and over and over again for some reason? When they were saying something like we don't want to force you to force us to use force or something like that, and I'm like, so that and the just oh man, it was funny, but it was confusion in a funny way. But to me, I don't know, this episode. I enjoyed it, probably way more than the other there that episode. But yeah, this, as you guys know, Lower Decks is my favorite TV series of the Star Trek stuff. So the comics, they really reflect what the TV series had brought, and I have to give them kudos for that because they really did their homework in a sense. So to me, it's like watching what Lower Decks could have continued if they didn't cancel.

I'm probably gonna go up there with Charles and doing an eight point five. Eight point five well, as you guys know, starts five. The Final Frontier is my favorite movie. I had thee I Can't Break my Streets, so uh they even started, I had to jump in there. But yeah, anything right, you know, I the Scooter poots. You know, this was a fun, fun issue. I enjoyed reading it. I loved Tendy anyways, the whole So here's my thing on the pay I'm thinking back to point Beverly Crusher is on the planet and she buys an entire bolt of fabrica and she says, send it to my ship and charge it to Crush her. So they must have some fight.

What it is, I don't know, but to see that, you know, the Feringi wanting the money and the whole thing. It was funny. And by the way, those moment there was one Dacora class and two their ships, and I paid close attention to it because I wanted to see what the other Feringhi ships look like, because the de Kora is pretty much and the Shuttle are the only two Feringi ships that we ever see. But in this issue we see two different Feringi ships. So I thought that was cool that they actually took the time to design a new Feringhi ship along with the one that we always see, So I give them kudos for that.

I love Tendy too. Tendy is a great character, is really super fun. So her my affection for her as a character, and my sympathy for anyone carrying a lot of student debt, I think is is winning out right. This week, we honor six of our members of the sci fi community who have gone before us. The first is actor Jeremy Kemp. Jeremy Kemps, of course, the English actor who portrayed Robert Picard in Star Trek The Next Generation's fourth season episode Family. He was born Edmund Jeremy James Walker in Chesterfield, derby Shire, and adopted his mother's maiden name as his stage moniker, which is kind of an interesting thing, makes sense, nice and short. Kemp began his acting career in the nineteen fifties, eventually joining the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Old VIC for two seasons, and I, of course years later because I just finished watching this show, would see him in an episode in nineteen seventy five episode of Space nineteen ninety nine Voyager's Return.

And after meeting Nichols at a Star Trek convention in nineteen seventy five, scientist doctor Jesco von Puttkamer suggested that the actress take part in NASA's recruiting drive. She took up the role in nineteen seventy seven, making recruitment and training videos and supervising astronaut recruits and hopefuls. She noted that within six months, the applicant count went from fewer than one hundred a year to over sixteen hundred. Most of the recruits that she attracted were women or from ethnic minorities.

And then it's only in this last couple of years and she's really come into like a claim where people are really seeing what a titan he is.

It's a slight delay on Wave one of those Star Trek Action figures after unexpected manufacturing and transit quality problems. NA Cell Company was happily telling American collectors that their long awaited first wave of Star Trek Action figures we're on track to arrive in the US for distribution before the holidays. But now they're sharing some disappointing news for those eagerly awaiting and delivery. The Cell President CEO, Brian Volkwei said in a video, Unfortunately, we started shipping Star Trek Wave one figures on Wednesday, and even though we did our inspections and we looked at about ten percent of the entire shipment and everything looked great. It turns out, and we're still trying to find out why. We've been told by the shipping company that one of the containers got too hot and that made some of the plastic expand oh dear, we definitely have some sort of quality control issue, and I would rather be late and send you bad news and have a QC issue. We're going to stop shipping as of today, fix a QC issue, which we believe will take it the most thirty days.
