And with everything that was going on back then, they never a body part, They never found a strand of hair, they never anything. New York City was shut down. We couldn't even go to the funeral, and all they had was a DNA thing for her burial. And her name is on the wall down there, and one of these days I'm going to go down with my family when I get the courage up to go down there to the monument and pay her the respects that she deserves.

I ran every simulation and found the only viable way to successfully transit the gravity waves and search for Erica. We need to take Enterprise through the wormhole. Un Orthodox is an understatement. In addition, a HER's plan requires for creative, stable work filled around the ship, effectively wedging the wormal aperture open. What about the vaccines on board for Epsilon n D three. We're not just going to be risking ourselves. I understand that, which means we have enough time to try it once. You can pull the plug if it gets too risky. Guess really work using a starship to prop open a wormhole? Yes, and theory when we're inside this thing?

Question is in the Strange New World's episode Terrarium, Whorra changes the success numbers of the mission, essentially lying to Captain Pike. Do you agree with her decision? And sixty six percent of our responders agreed with her decision and only thirty four percent said no, she should not have lied, So there you go.

15:41 So what what do you think, Eric? Are you with her? Do you think she did the right thing or yeah. I mean, you know, turns out pike knew what she was doing anyway, So no harm, no foul. Uh you know. I mean this is a hard one because if it was real life, you know, I would say, no, it wasn't the right thing to do. But because it was Star Trek and because we kind of needed that for the story to move along, I'd say, yeah, she did make the right decision. But yeah, I think in real life, like well, I mean, theoretically in real life, I guess I should say, because we don't have starships. But you know, even in like boats and other things like that, if you fudge the numbers by a few percentages, sometimes the math doesn't math out. So but yeah, I mean in this case, I think it was fine.

16:26 And I thought it was interesting that pike knew she lied, And. Yeah, I mean he sort of already knew what decision he was going to make. He just needed to actually put up a good show and make sure that he was, you know, checking all the boxes to make sure that he was captaining correctly, so number one didn't get on his case too much. There if we don't want that, do we? I mean, that is her job is the XO. But yeah, yeah, he had already made his decision in my in my opinion, What do you think, V? I agree because I thought of even though it's not quite the same thing, but I thought of Kirk in the Kobyashi Maru where he changed the program to alter the outcome. And also Heah is trying to save her friend, and we have to remember that she already lost Hammer and because she couldn't do anything to save him, and so I think it was interesting that because unfortunately I only got to watch this episode once. I want to watch it again because it was really good. But the fact that Pike knew what she was doing really was interesting because if he, you know, since he knew, he could have said, well, we're not going to do it anyway.

17:51 So but I agree with her decision and it worked, so. That's a good thing. Yes, that's good. How about you, David, what do you think? Yeah? I think it was like what Eric said pretty much, you know, because of sty Trek moving along and everything. It was a good idea. But at the same time, I actually kind of agree with you V. I actually didn't think about the whole idea of losing him, and that she feels like a deep wanting to be able to do like shaving of any of her friends. So I can imagine that she did that on purpose, just because of the fact that she had lost her best friend and everything. So I think I kind of agree with the pole there that I think it was a good idea that she did what she did. But I mean, it's a plot armor.

But all right too, Charles, you got the caboose on this one, buddy. Yeah, I think I agree with the minions on this one, especially with Artaga not having plot armor. But when they were flying the ship, look at what Pike said mortegas I fire the ship. So I think he has them caring about her too, so I think he wanted to try his bets to save her when he could.

I'm going to respectfully disagree and call bullshit on all y'all because it's like, yeah, okay, maybe she wants to save her friend, right, None of that justifies lying to your commanding officer, which should really get your ass thrown on the brake. Frankly, in any ship, in any you know, service, you could have, right, And so you're expecting you to provide precise details on everything that's going on, and if you just suddenly decide that, for whatever personal reasons, you're going to fudge the data, you could do something that's responsible for the entire ship exploder.

I mean, and you're making a lot of assumptions here also, friends, as you're assuming that Pike knew during the clip that we saw, right, we don't know that he could have found out after the fact reviewing data, reviewing logs, and that's when he found out afterwards, at the very very end, because it's not clearly stated that he knew when he was talking to her when she said this, he knew. He definitely knew later on when they were discussing it, but it doesn't say when he could have done that. So be careful with these assumptions. With the script. It is just my thing, I would say, And I think what I'll do is I will disconnect and try to come back and see if maybe the other fifty percent of riverside is actually working this way.

They never set them to kill first. That was one of the dumbest things I think I've ever seen. Despite the fact that this was an awesome episode, it was dumb.

I'm glad of both aspects. So well. I thought Erica was really a little slow on the uptake there. Right. But yeah, I disagree. Yeah, I cannot agree with the minions on this all. You know, it's a you know, it's just like, if that's the rationale that you're saying that, yeah, it's right to shoot on site with no context or explanation.

And let's just leave it at that. So yeah, shoot shoot shoot first is a terrible, terrible rationale in any situation. It's just not a it's it's I thought there was a bit of hot need you know, squeezing the you know, plot wash a little too dray from my face, but you know, we'll get into that. Yeah, so I can't agree, I think on I mean, everybody on this show lately is just ignoring the rules like left and right. I mean, you know, so many flagrant violations.

But on my remembering, it was Erica, Yep, it was Erica. Yeah. I mean everybody on this ship. Nobody there toosy poor and great big highballs, a red one and Pike's quarters, you know, eaton steak, and nobody follows anything as far as like chaining command of the rules. It's just like steal a whole star base. Sure, no problem. As long as we're back by a happy hour, then that's really all that matters. So yeah, I see a lot of nonsense going on, and this is just more of that nonsense lately. So what can I tell you?

I mean, I have to say, I I understand because of her history with the Gorn, but I agree or Ortega should have said something, but I know I was part of the plot, so she did as a date. But it just I don't know what's is heartbreaking for me. That was just I did not expect that, and uh La on was wrong. And then when Ortegas said, you know she uh you know La was her friend, but that the Gorn was her friend too, and she said, I don't know what to do with this. So that's going to be I haven't seen the last episode, so I don't know if you see Ortegas dealing with it. But that was that was that was tough, tough to watch.

What kind of policy did they have on that ship shoot at anything that moves? But yeah, that that whole thing, which is kind of crazy. I didn't really like it at all, you know. And of course what were they going to do with the going continuing on if they didn't kill it? I mean it kind of lazy writing in my opinion, So yeah, I don't agree. Well, if you remember the Battlestar Galactic episode, they'd return a starbuck. Uh, they killed the Cylon, which I thought would have been a great addition to the colonial fleet of Cylon. But that's a story for a different, different day.

Erica knew what was going on. You fire even though Erica is coming out and you know, Erica probably may have had some connection with this creature. Nope, you shouldn't have been firing like that.

But man, I mean who I would love to see who they would cast as like a you know, a young William Wyndham esque, ambitious Matt Decker. But that was a great reference. I was just I was very delighted by that. That's the kind of a pet that I welcome. So good stuff there.

Right, you're digging in your garden and you know those those weird earwigs that you find in the bathroom at two in the morning, Right, those things are like, oh god, you're a nightmare. They called them things, didn't they. Yeah. Yeah, it's something about an insect with multiple legs that were just intrinsically freaked out by. So yeah, I think that was a great a great creature design for them.

35:14 If memory serves, it's everything is kind of every smart decision, sorry, every smart decision in this episode is made by the Gorn. The human. It's it's the Gorn, the female Gorn pilot because female pilot's rock Uh somehow got a power thing in a jigger and reconfigured the power thing in my jigger to make their own personal deflector shield. Right that they were able to somehow project I can't remember if it was from the wreckage of the Archimedes or or where. If it was from the Gorn Zone ship, I can't remember, but they just basically made like a kind of projectable deflector shield, which was really cool. So I like that idea.

I would like to have one of those if I ever after, Like, all right, the bus, Yeah, Charles, what does or Tagas modify into a rudimental translator that allows her to communicate with simple yes and no answers with the Gorn? Well watching the episode, as far as I could figure, it might have been a tricorder. Ye, look like it's definitely. I do have a question about that though, for my Trek experts, did not on Star Trek Discovery in season one did Michael Burnham create the translator that would allow them to talk to the Klingon?

36:42 So they already had a translator? Am I? Am I right or wrong on this one? Yeah? But the thing about a universal translator is is that it has to have It's not really universal. It has to have some sample data for it to work. So and also they're not built into the communicators like they were later on in there. It's like a separate device. Okay. Cool, Like in d S nine and Little Green Men they have love what's you know? They Fani had them in their ears. It's sub Yeah. And another interesting fact about the translator is that the episode The Enterprise, at the very end when they were forming the Federation, they actually had they actually wore something similar to a combat that it's like a universal translator during that whole speech and everything, so all the alien could understand what the English were talking about.

37:39 So kind of interesting, pretty cool, pretty cool. All right, you get the final question, Charles. Al ready and the flies the Enterprise? Who flies the Enterprise any of the Wormhole in the absence of Artagans? Uh. Well, I'm going to answer this question, Jim. I'm pretty sure it was the second best pilot on the ship, and the second best pilot on this ship is our dear captain, mister Pike. Mister Pike, that's right, he was the pilot. As we mentioned during cadet training there, she's got a really stripped down shuttle to survey this region of space that they run into a lot of crazy gravity as going on there, this wormhole appears unexpectedly and she is sucked in with her shuttle and crash lands on this moon, seemingly never to be connected with the Enterprise again, right, very cool set up, and it's a survival story. She's forced to basically figure out how she's gonna, you know, get through things there. And then we talked about this. They are just gigantic, horrific looking earwigs or millipedes or whatever you want to call them, the spring out of you know, craters and come to get you. That are terrifying. So it's not just this inhospitable planet with this rather dangerous elliptical orbit that could fry up pretty easily, but it's populated by these horrific bugs as well, so things are not good. And as if that's not enough, or take as stumbles upon a stranded Gorn pilot, okay, really really crazy and inicily of course, because she's carrying a lot of you know, from our season's premiere, she's carrying a lot of angst and frustration from her you know, injuries and torment at the hands of the Gorn. But she's got a you know, basically team up, which is a great sci fi premise, right, and work with the Gorn

So this is you know, Timba his eye arms wide, you know, very Dharmack and Tanagra very much evoking well, you know, not so much Arena, but the classic picture from I think it was in the eighties. Uncle Jim Will sent me straight on this, but it reminded me a lot of enemy mind a lot and in a good way. Right. I think that I can't apologies, I can't pull the ear out of myself here. So the Gorn captain is revealed, thank you, perfect. I thought that was in the old New York days. There the Goran pilot is injured and it's a female and is really surprised or tagis by you know, expressing empathy for her. We've heard a lot about empathy in the world this week, but you get a lot of empathy from the Gorn pilot helping defend or tag Us from the creatures and protect her with shielding and do and even provide food for her. So they willing to not treat or take us as an enemy, but as somebody who also needs help, and they're thrown in the situation together, right, And then we end up finding out because we mentioned earlier complicated thing where the Enterprise figures out how to create a stable warp field and push itself into the wormhole so that they can find or take us again and or take us as something to attract their attention. And everything's okay until Lawn

47:45 and their security team, you know, as though they're basically working in you know, southern Los Angeles, just suddenly bursts into the scene and shoots the Gorn ally on site, which is it a whole tragic thing, And then in a little de numont action, the Metrons received revealed themselves, which is some interesting casting there, and realize that this is to address some of the concerns that our well intentioned fans had in their episode scores. This is basically tying into what we see later in Arena, right, so that this is that Arena has ended up being revealed.

48:26 It's not the first time that the Metrons have been scoping out the Gorn and experimenting and learning from the relationships that humans have with the Gorn. This is actually an earlier sample of that, so it's kind of ends up working I think very nicely as a prequel. I think here so laans reflexes are a little bit unchecked here, and a tragic sense happens around that where it's unclear with the Metrons exactly how much of all this stuff that Laon is going to remember, because I think they're messingg I don't think that they will that Law will remember the Metrons. I think she will just remember her time with the Gorn was the impression I got. But we'll see what everyone else says. It is very fortunate for this episode to fall on the heels of last week's episode, which I did not care for that much.

49:15 But wow, I thought this was a real return to form and it felt to me like a real classic old school you know, Meat and Potatoes Star Trek episode. I mean, it's a little rough going in the first half because the fact that she's by herself, Erica is required to talk out loud to herself a lot, which is difficult, right, because that's something that's very hard to suspend your disbelief. Right She's like, Okay, now I'm going to make a fire and I better be careful and who she is? What about these bugs? So she's narrating like crazy for the first half the episode. It was a little annoying for me. But the dynamic of learning to coexist with your enemy and transcend factionism and work together for your mutual survival, that theme speaks to me loudly, and I thought that was someone that we really need to hear. So I thought that was all handled very very well for the most part. I think, you know, we talked about it were a little fudging the data right in her zeal to you know, get what he wanted, which is not a great lesson to be telling people.

50:20 So I hope that she gets you know, maybe we could throw her an Eric in the brig for an episode, you know, just to basically teach the lesson that both I'm sorry, I'm gonna get along witted here, but still a great episode. I really liked it a lot, and I would be happy to give this. I think a nine seems appropriate. I don't know if it's all time classic status that's what I saved the tens for, but it sure is close, right, It sure is close. I've only watched it once, but I just thought it was a refreshing, well written which we've been needing. A well written episode and a real showcase for the actress who plays Eric ord Thus to carry the whole episode. Right.

But you know, the the unlikely coming together of Erica, who had her you know, she had that trauma from her you know, being almost killed by a goron before and being surprised, and I wonder, I just I really wonder what it was about that particular gorn that because it wasn't until the gorn throws a piece of whatever that was to Erica and she realized that, oh my gosh, she's trying to help me. She knows I'm starving, and she she's throwing me food, even though it was gross. Whatever she was doing and gagging had a turn. I had to turn away from that. But no, that just the even with the simple agree and disagree

But uh and then It was just just absolutely heartbreaking seeing the Goren line there and just you know, her last breath and everything. So that just that I don't know, which just really upset me. Yeah, it wasn't perfect, but it pulled me in. It had me like almost you know, on the edge of my seat, so to speak, until the very end, and so this was definitely a solid episode.

But uh, yeah, that thing brought my score down for sure.

I mean, there was a whole wormhole, right, it's basically a vacuum cleaner, and I'm thinking, how is a ship supposed to prevent it stop from getting shot through? So I don't know. I guess I was thinking too much in the line of the d S nine wormhole where everything just kind of like went to warp right through it, I guess. But I think in d S nine's defense, I think you fly into the wormhole, the wormhole doesn't suck you in, so you you have to be you have to have a power flight into the. Yeah, it just had that effect that it looks like they were being sucked in because it looks like they were getting faster and faster, and she kind of went into it. But I don't know, it's just my thoughts of how wormholes works since I watched D nine. But anyway, overall this episode, I'm going to be giving it an eight.

In the in the Night In the nineteen seventy nine Disney classic The black Hole, there is an event horizon that you can go right up to and kind of hang on the event horizon before you get pulled into the gravitational field of the black hole. And I think it's they may have their very hard uh something more than the Klingon society, but they definitely have the focus to

Kind of got me the point, like, okay, which is to be set up for Enterprise or we're just the setup of trying to see what happens to human and a Gorn and another human and seeing how that goes. And I'm going to kind of agree with towards David idea. I said, with a couple of negatives in this one. I'm going to give it to an eight to two good episod, but I could have could

We talked about, you know what the whole thing is, and it's a cool planet that Ortigas ends up on, not really you know, a planet type that we see too much of in Star Trek. So I thought that was really cool. I will admit I tend to agree with Charles on the internal dialogue part. I actually liked that, and I do think that that reference that you said Charles to theater it being like a theater device is absolutely true, So didn't bug me one bit. I get it's a little you know exposition. Ye, I mean you're seeing what she's doing and she's explaining it at the same time. But I don't know, I thought it was okay. This episode for me set up that classic Star Trek problem of the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the really well, you know, it's like a whole starship's worth of people and another four thousand people against saving this one person, so you know, sometimes that person's worth it.

I just I'm fascinated by that, and I never exactly know what the right answer is. Sort of depends on how I'm feeling underneath particular day. Yeah, this episode did a great job of that. I thought. I thought Number one was great in the criticisms and you know, alternates that she kept offering throughout the episode. Is nice to see a really effective XO like it kind of makes me think back to like Riker and you know, right like was Riker a really good was he really good at his job? And I haven't thought too much about this, but like, you know, the job of the X is to kind of question the captain and like provide alternatives and that kind of stuff, and I think he provided alternatives, but Pacard was always right in the end. And I feel like I feel like number one's got more of a chance of being right than Riyker does on any given day. Maybe she's just got good ideas. I don't know, but I appreciated what they did with her character in this one too. I also appreciated the a moment where there were a couple of moments. I mean, obviously she's really digging in on saving Erica, which is which is cool because they're close friends.

1:04:32 There's the one moment where she says to Spock that she has faith that this thing can work, and it was kind of one of those moments where Spock's like science, science, science, and She's like, yeah, but faith, and he was like, hmm, okay, let's keep doing it. I'm gonna stick around, let's let's go for it. I appreciated that kind of like acquiescing of Spock to you know, a way of thinking that he doesn't necessarily naturally have in himself. And in fact, I think it was later on in the episode where Eric is I assume kind of that that idea of faith is what causes her to to bust out the Swahili too, which I thought was a nice tie into our original uhurah and you know what her background was and all that kind of stuff. So that was that was fun to see that thrown into this episode. I loved the Gorn show and the first sign of kindness.

Because since she's supposed to be fixing the calm thing, like, why are they playing chess? I was not at all really expecting that. You know, there's a lot of questions about the Gorn because it's like, I'm not clear if in tos In Arena, if that's supposed to be the first time that they see the Gorn, or if they're already familiar with the Gordon. I've always assumed that was kind of like the first time, but I don't.

So so hear me out on this, Okay. I've always been disappointed with what they've done with Betel and the whole Gorn thing inside her. Now it seems like everything's just fine. You know, she's strong. That's about all she's got. I mean, I want her to have a tail or something. But couldn't they have brought the Gorn back to so instead of giving her the job at the Judiciary or whatever, what if they had brought this Gorn back to the ship and then Battel has the special skills to be able to like communicate with this Gorn and we already know this Gorn in this episode go back to the Hegemony, right because they're injured, they're broken, so they can't go back home. So what if it's a found family story instead, and the Gordon comes back to the ship and Betel understands them, and then the two of them go off and do something together, you know, become roommates or something on some other planet because because they understand one another, you know. I mean, that could have been a great spin off show, honestly.

And I thought that was a little bit lazy the way that they just chose to to kind of end it with a gunshot. So I just really really didn't dig that at all. And the last thing I'll mention is I just really I can't remember who it was. Maybe Charles said that didn't care for the Metron fair enough. I literally got goosebumps when the Metron came on screen. Their their voice was amazing, how it kept modulating between like a male. Voice and a male voice, and. Like it just like, I don't know, I just thought they were really super cool. And you know, they they did the Star Trek magic where they're like, you won't remember us, we'll see you in the future, you know, which is okay. I mean we see that in Star Trek all the time, so that that part didn't really bug me either. But I I really liked the Metron I love the way they looked, I love the way they sounded. I thought the little I mean, the episode is called Terrarium, and once again my wife is like, what's the terrarium. I'm pretty sure the planet is the Terrarium, and that the Gorn and Ortegas are like the pets, like the you know, the things inside the little glass box.

So yeah, I really dug this episode for me, was it was. It's probably one of the best episodes of the season. I will give this one a nine from me. Awesome, awesome, So all right for me, there was a Battlestar Galactica series called Galactica nineteen eighty and there was one particular episode called Return of Starbuck and Starbuck crashes on a planet with a Cylon and they become best of friends. This reminded me of that as well as Enemy Mine and a lot of other sci fi tropes.

And that would have changed the whole episode. So they gave her a knife so that that wouldn't happen because they had become friends. So I thought, you know, I thought that was really cool. And the Gorn making her eat the game piece after she won the game, It's okay, you we're out a game piece. It's pretty quick if you're eating though, But uh, you know, I think I think they had to have the them playing chess and Gorn checkers whenever. That was in order to to show their bonding, their their friendship had grown, because otherwise, you know, the death of the Gorne wouldn't have meant anything. And Eric, I was on a slightly different page than you were. I thought, okay, now, don't laugh, this has nothing to do with Star Trek five.

Well, I'm so desperate for them for this Gorn thing to tell they got.

Here's whate we're getting into the whole fostered stuff because they add stuff and remastered that everyone's watching now is supposed to do on the original series that they didn't, you know, they they when they did read it all the facts, they added a cock and stuff like that that you know, it's not you know, that's none of the stuff that was during the original airings. So just putting that out there because a lot of crazy said.

So yeah, I mean there are there are a few omnipotent species in you know, in Stardruk, right, It's not just the queue. I mean metrons is one of them. I think there was a there was another species. It was like the doud or something that was another one.

Yeah, read people's thoughts and then create it. Like Beverly with the have some fabric or something and they had it or something something. By the only one that feels like sometimes like in the real world, that we're in a terrarium and we've got the metrons that are just messing with us. That's all I thought. Yes, yeah, okay, when. The Metron says that that makes that line about altering your perception of the Gorn, it made me think. The first thing I thought was that ancient hissing Gorn in the rubber suit that we talked with Andy Bray about that was on aarp, that Gorn that Kirk fights. I immediately thought to myself that Gorn is a is an altered perception of the Gorn to give Kirk something that he could easily relate to, And that's why that Gorn looked that way versus the Gorn that Ortegas is stuck with, which is the actual Gorn? And that that was kind of the where my brain went as soon as the Gorn said that they altered your perception of the Gorn.

Get props to range New Worlds for their I think their effects are fantastic because yeah, the Gorn was and I don't I don't know exactly what the you know, percentages were of because the head was was clearly you know, cgi or whatever they did, but the like the hands, you know, the body was there was somebody I guess in a Gorn suit, but the whole planet, the lighting, the planet on fire, everything, and like Eric said, with the Metron, the voice changing back and forth and whoever they got, maybe we can get that that person to be on the show, because talk about an ethereal fascinating looking individual. Just I thought, very very cool. Just you know, stop messing with us. We're done already.
