I thought it was rather it seemed like this was something that everybody's agent's cooked up, and it felt to me like what's referred to as stunt casting. And there's no way you can even for a second not be cognizant that this is Patton Oswald. So it's very difficult to get into the character. It's just it's just, you know, I'm gonna save most of my thoughts for when we actually talked about the episode. But it did not work for me. And and they're claiming there at the end it was just it was so slow. I mean, good lord, it was just painfully slow. And and that music in the background, I mean, I'm assuming we didn't put that music in there, right, that's the music to play with it, the looking you know Ed Sullivan show.

But I think we had a variation of Vulcans in this show, and I think that show was a little more variationally that you were used to seeing in the vulcans. So when you got somebody wagged fees interested in humans that most falcons are, and I think he made Doug a little different and I enjoyed having something a little different. All right, Eric, your thoughts on Doug.

28:40 Well. Of all of the new Vulcans that were introduced in this episode, he by far was the best, but I still hated him. So it's a good thing I didn't do the vote. No, I love them, I was with v I laughed, I cried, I hurled. I just I thought it was great and after all, you know, it was good to have a laugh, and it was nice to see something like that, something different on Star Trek. So I enjoyed Doug. In the Strange New World's episode What Is Starfleet? A fantastic episode that we reviewed last week, Captain Pike helps a sentient creature commit suicide. Do you agree with his decision? And I admit somewhat surprisingly, although I guess we do have Star Trek fans here so maybe a little bit more on this side of the of the coin. Ninety six percent of our responders agreed with Pike's decision and only four percent did not agree. And yeah, I you know, personally, I am a big advocate for a person's right to decide how they want to end their life, and in this case, I think it was pretty clear that the creature was done. They communicated with her, they executed her wishes, and that was, in my opinion, absolutely the right thing to do. So I am with the minions on this one.

But what got me was the fact that she had communicated about her children. So that's a universal thing with mothers want their children. You know, all you care about is you want your children to be okay. And once she knew that Pike was going to make sure that her childildren were okay, then you know she was. She could die in peace, you know, she she died in peace, so there really was no other option. So God, that

That makes a lot of sense with their new Vulcan minds, though these four individuals exhibit a lot of exaggerated behaviors, very rude, selfish, emotionally detached, including some racism to good old Spock for being only half Vulcan, which is a little uncomfortable, which distresses Spock, and he's very displeased by the logical inconsistencies and rude feetman he receives from his colleague As we lurch into the fourth act, Una unless her former romantic interest, Doug, who is a Vulcan fascinated by humans, Doug who's a Contra expert who supposedly went to help them. My god, I can't even think, sorry, but yeah, the credits that I thought were pretty interesting because of the fact that Pike was actually speaking in like a vulcan tone, innocent and I know some people didn't really like the way that he spoke, but I thought that was pretty clever in the fact that he just kind of like, you know, played his roles of Vulcan.

So I was writing notes as I was watching it, and I immediately knew that was a Romulin just a way that she was so manipulative and everything like that. And then when they got together and they talked about it, like you know, I can't say certain things to a degree, and it was pretty chilly, but you know, I just knew that she was part Romulin because of probably her dreams that she had gotten. But yeah, so I did like how okay, So when they introduced uh Doug for the first time, I laughed out loud when they at his name. I don't know why, but it's just unusual

I don't know if they're gonna like going off or anything, but I thought that would be a very interesting and we could probably talk about it later about more about it. Yeah, I actually liked how they did that whole ination for Gotti, and so there was another thing too. Of course we've already kind of touched on the whole Gotti and her type with Gott, you know, bringing back an old dear

Well, if I looked at the four vulcans that we've got, we had Leon, which was very warlike. She wanted to get into full combat. She won battle. She wanted war. Pike was very strict, very clean, very logical. His quarters had to be perfect.

They had some different emotions or different things going on with how they acted, which is why I kind of liked this episode because I liked the fact that each person had their own personality and their own little difference to who they were, and also the fact that they sit there and would push the fact that's, well, Spock's only half Vulcan. We're better than he is. And of course David mentioned the fact of the new opener opening credit for the show was spot with Pike just kind of going monotone and saying it real slow, almost Kirk like. Definitely thought it was an interesting relationship builder between Kirk and Scottie. Definitely to

In sort of a card esque face palm, the entire time, I just really couldn't believe what I was seeing. For me, this episode, you know, it reduced sixty five years of development of the noble race of Vulcans down to an absolute caricature. They you know, Paul mentioned the whole like somehow they absorbed hundreds of years of culture and training with their little shot DNA shot.

Like we've seen that a bunch in Star Trek, right, and people do it so that they can go down to planets or so that they can do you know, blend in to like do a mission or whatever. But the the and I love the The generally speaking in strange New worlds. I love comedic moments that they have in episodes. It's something that I think this show has done pretty well up until now, where they sort of throw these little do dads in, which I think is what you often see in Next Generation, less so on Deep Space nine.

You know, it was like a total distortion that really didn't really for me, didn't read as Star Trek at all. You know, the title is four and a half Vulcans and they, you know, they really lay into Spock for for being half human, which, okay, granted, is that what volts would do. Well, we sort of see that at Star Trek two thousand and nine, right, we see them going back to that that anti human racism.

So I think that's pretty consistent with what Vulcans would would really do. Does it mean that I like to see Spock bullied on a show that's produced in twenty twenty five? No? Did it lend comedic value to the episode? In my opinion, No, Watching somebody get bullied like that is never fun, So it didn't. It just really didn't add anything for me, And I didn't like that the fact that they set up the sort of interesting problem of the planet at the very beginning I thought was cool. I was like, oh cool, there here's this planet that, like, you know, is kind of on the cusp of you know, can we contact them or can we not? Based on the prime directive and what we should or should not do, very very interesting premise. That whole deal was solved in the first ten minutes of this episode. This episode was like fifty three or fifty four minutes long, and all of the interesting stuff happened probably in the first five minutes, aside from a couple scenes that I'll talk about later.

It was all about like the comedic relief of these people trying to turn back into humans or not trying to turn back into humans. I think that you know, several things I found ridiculous, the high fives, ridiculous, them not wanting to transform back into humans, ridiculous, the industrial music playing when they're walking slow through the hall.

I'm trying to think if Mike, like, if this had been an episode of like Lower Decks, would that have changed my opinion of it, because I'm sort of expecting a particular level, but I I feel like, yeah, it just felt like it lacked.

Sleep I'm so sorry. I'm just trying not to and I just just escaped me. I'm so it is a reflection on you, I promise. So I just found the comedy to not be super intelligent at all. I did find Laan's kind of romulent tendencies and kind of the realization of her and Pike coming together to be pretty interesting. I actually liked that, and la On was probably the most interesting character for me.

Conversely, I couldn't believe how bad Antson Mount's portrayal of a vulcan was. It was almost like, how could you be that bad given that you're such a good actor. It just really didn't just really didn't resonate for me at all. So I need to wrap this up, I know, because there's a lot going on in this episode. The whole last bit everybody makes up. It sort of all is okay at the end, and I'm left at the end of the episode with my first thought was I'm never watching that again, and then my second thought was, oh damn, I forgot to take notes. Now I have to watch it one more.

The second time around, I really didn't like it any better. So for me, I'm going to quote something that I also read. This was after I took my notes, but then I went and read some articles and there was one article sentence that I thought was very resonant for me. It said Star Trek doesn't endure because of gimmicks or gags. It endures because it takes its characters, cultures, and ideas seriously, even when it's having fun with them. And I felt like that was where this episode just really went wrong. It just made everything into a parody. And I would put this right up there with probably my least favorite episodes of Star Trek of all time. And so I thought Paul was pretty generous giving it a five. I actually gave it a three myself, all.

This is almost like somebody wrote a Lower Decks episode and then they decided, oh, we can just do it on Stranger Worlds because all the stuff you're saying, the exaggerated stuff, the ridiculousness, the absurdity.

So I I watched this with a different context than Paul and Eric did. When I was watching this, I'm thinking to myself, these are not vulcans. These are humans perceptions of what vulcans are. And so each one of their their tendencies, their human tendencies had been magnified like one hundred folds. So you know, Pike was the leader, so he's going around making all these decisions. Now, granted, I agree with Paul. The first thing I said was it's belled oar conehead. That's exactly what I thought. He's walking around doing conehead. But his tendencies had a big magnified and no, Horror's tendencies to communicate and whatnot had been magnified. Each one of their human tendencies were magnified because they were vulcans, because they weren't raised as vulcans like Spock, where they had their whole life to train to learn how to deal with it, to handle it.

I'm just I was I wanted to ask that question because it's that initial kind of suspension of disbelief that for me all really pulled me out of the episode because I'm like, well, they can't even really be vulcans by getting a shot. Right, if you look at all the other episodes where people change races, they have to fight back their own tendencies. Right, You're not instantly a romulin.
