2:40 Hey, Uncle Jim, I'm doing okay. It has been an interesting week out here in the Pacific Northwest, but ultimately a good one. So excited to revisit this episode with you. Yeah, the publy cohorts. The smoke from Canada is just awful here and it's just amazing. And we also have not from Portland, but from Virginia. We have our own v How you doing tonight? V? Doing all right. We finally have some cooler weather, so, as the expression goes around here, we are no longer living on Hell's front porch. So that's a good thing. That is a good thing, very good thing. And we have tonight with us as well, our very own miracle worker himself, David. And guess where he's from. That's right, he's from Portland. How you doing a.

Awesome, awesome, And we're gonna head right back out to Portland again and we're gonna say hello to Eric. How you doing today? Eric? I am doing great, Jim. And you know it is a it is a little known fact actually that I wrote the book actually on space jurisdiction, and I am known for my diction.
4:23 Okay, all right, well we will. Maybe I just didn't deliver that with enough shatns. Diction. I can't go. Trying to say I know what you want to say. Oh boy, As I said, guys, we have a great show for you tonight. We also have our Star Trek polls, con returns and Ortegas is in subordinate hmm. Interesting. We also have some trivia with Uncle Jim, which should be interesting.
5:19 We haven't done that in a while, but David asked me to bring it back, so we're going to do it tonight. And what Star Trek actor do you share a birthday with? Find out on our Star Trek Birthday segment. And a last but lot neast, what's going on around the Star Trek universe. Could we be seeing Cybock return? I hope, And of course we are going to be talking a little bit about the Muppets as well, one of Victoria's favorite topics. And while you're over why you're over at Trek talking and beyond on Facebook give us a like and a follow, and look for the pinned Livelong and prosper post at the top of the page asking where you are listening from. We have lots of emojis, guess my attention. If you see a heart next to your name from yours truly, then you want to tune into the next podcast because your name is going to be featured like these lucky fans. Take it away, Eric.
6:14 All right, Jim. The first shout out that I'm going to offer up this week is from right there in the middle of Europe, and we're going to say hello this week, and thank you so much for listening to Maria Caldevida, who's saying hello to us from Hulton, Onse and that is in the North Rhine Westphalia area of Deutsch Lan. Maria, thank you so much for saying hello to us and for giving us all those nitty gritty details about where you're from. Lots of cool regional stuff going on in that Rhine River area, and we really appreciate your support for our podcast. I'd also like to say hello this week to Gabor Mestian, who's saying hello to us from Budapest in the Hungary. My wife has family from Hungary, and so we've got a little bit of a personal connection to that amazing country. Although I have never been there myself, hope to make it there one day. Thanks Gabor for saying hello. Like to say hello this week as well to George f rec Rex SoC Facundo, who's saying hello to us from Puerto Rico. Ah, Puerto Rico another one of those amazing places out there that I have never been to. I have a lot of friends from there actually though, so George, thanks for saying hello, and I'll make sure that my friends know that Puerto Rico is supporting our podcast as well. And last, but not least on my list, I'd like to say hello to Antonio Brass, who is hailing from Portugal, proudly flying that beautiful Portuguese flag. Thanks Antonio for saying hello to us. Charles, I'm imagining you would like to bring
7:46 it back to the US here, buddy, Yes. Thank you, Eric, thank you. Let's start off with a welcome to Michael Richie from Alabama. Welcome Michael Fan Gary Lee from Texas. Big place to be. Welcome to James Boyer from Northern California. I would love to spend some nice weather up there right now compared to we're having here. And welcome Terry Smith from Maryland. Welcome Terry V. Who's on your list?
8:29 Well, first off, I have Julian Krotinsky from Canada, our neighbor to the north, and got the Vulcan hand salute there. Then then from your neck of the woods, I guess Grant's Pass Oregon, another Vulcan emoji, Chris Loopke. Then just a little bit up the road, Al Williams from Washington State, and last, but certainly not least, Nancy Brown from East Tennessee. So I've got all the Vulcan salutes, none of them sarcastic, though, but thank you all for watching. Now it's on to Paul.
9:15 I agree, I appreciate the introduction my for him. First of all, let's go back to Europe if we can, and say hello to Arnold van Duren from the Netherlands with a cheerful greeting bestowed upon us here. Arnold, it is wonderful to hear from you. Absolutely hi on my list of places I'd like to visit someday. Seems like you are in abundant sanity over there, so I super envy you Arnaut. Not too far from Arnold. We're going to go over to Hamburg in Germany where reich Automn is hailing us from our Facebook Porthal. So great to know that these folks are all over the place here. And if you go a little bit further from Hamburg to Berlin, you would see another star Trek enthusiast who lives just down the road, and that's Judith Barley, who lives in Berlin. So fantastic to know there's so much UFP representation over there in the old sod fantastic news.
10:12 And guess what it turns out we have a troika of German fans here tonight. That's right, we have three of them. It because in learnin Brandenburg, Germany, we have Holy Mike, which I believe is pronounced I'm pretty sure that's how you're supposed to say it, Holy Mike Batman. My audio goes to eleven. So yeah, we got a triumvirate of wonderful Germanic fan enthusiasts here tonight, and another one from the nether One. So it is a global thing. I'm wondering what people in Germany and nearby vicinities are thinking of the episode we'll be talking about tonight. Perhaps one of them will be on the little list shopping list of fan comments that Eric will read to us. Shortly, we shall find out what we friends. In the meantime, Uncle Jim will take us to the deep, dark hinderlands of somewhere in the five Borough area that is the city of New York. Uncle Jim, please continue.
11:15 Well, I thank you, Paul. We're gonna go to the Big Apple, and we're gonna go to Brooklyn, New York. We get a heart emoji and yeah, my family's from Brooklyn, New York. I spent my summers down there. I wonder if at some point when I was down there, if I ran into territory Lenuso Lenoso. I wonder it's possible. Maybe at Coney Island, who knows. And we also want to say hello to Kurt Shriver who's listening to us in Texas. Thank you so much Kurt for being a fan. And the last, but not least, because I put a duplicate on here because I'm not perfect, we want to say thank you to Lacy Mackenzie, the third from Central Florida. So that my friends are all of our fans shout outs.
11:58 If you would like to hear your name mentioned in a fan shout out, maybe see your picture up here on the screen. For those of you who have the video feed, visit us on our Facebook page at Trek Talk and beyond. Tell us where you're from and send us a picture. There's Paul getting beat up by a gorn, so you. Know, yeah, that's a shot from my last trip to Home Depot. I was trying to buy some lumber and it's about the only place that'll hire a gorn these days, right, you know, yeah, other other stores won't hire them, so yeah, they got a bad rap. Well let's spit eggs all over people. It's a mass.
12:39 There. You know, what are you gonna do? You know? But yeah, what can you do? Work in a restaurant? The reason with. No it is it is for sure. So you guys can send us your picture and see it right up there with Paul's gorn picture, So please please do that. And now it is time for our Star Trek polls. And you know what that means. The polling song. Lino, lino, you know me like no win what you thought about the show? Then we try to.
13:20 Share your opinions with all of our minions out there because they listen worldwide. So tell us just what you think. Get together, we will alter Canara and romulin an. Crack into that romulin ale right now. All right, So this is where we do our polls, and we ask you guys on our Facebook page, which you think. And you can go to our Facebook page Trek Talking and Beyond and take place in all these awesome polls. David Roll the tape. Con this is Star Trek Khan, the untold story of Star Trek's most legendary villain.
14:15 The new pieces added to this puzzle by the logs I retrieved on SETI Alpha five only confirmed my belief that Con. Was much more than a map. Tyrant, what is it you hope to tieve here? Con andes people, I did? It is my intention to find the truth. Help me find the rest of the. Story featuring Naveen Andrews is con Cook? Did us pay that from this gridessence? Dust People rise? Fire Ren Schmidt as Lieutenant Marla mc geivers. Simple fact remains that we are both here now and must find a way to share this world and its dwindling resources.
14:55 Son Yu Cassidy is doctor Rosalind lear in my. Experience are made not born. With too russ is ensign tuvac fulkins find it incredibly difficult to lie why this renders us especially sensitive to the lies of others, and I am not aware and George de kay as Captain sulouon Khn was one of humanity's greatest mistakes, a products of ill advised genetic manipulation. If there is a justice in this universe, one day we might avenge yourselves, starting with Captain James T. Star Trek come coming soon wherever you get your podcast.
15:51 He is con All right, you saw it, So I guess you guys know what the pole question is. But take it away. Eric. Yeah. Based on that trailer, we asked our Facebook participants, are you excited about the Star Trek con audio drama? And a solid eighty percent said heck yeah, I am excited about that. Twenty percent said no, and I can only guess that those are people who do not have ears. I for one, am extremely excited about it. I'm all about the audio drama. I listen to a lot of audiobooks in my car while I drive around the city doing various things, and so this fits right into the way that I like to consume my media. I'm really hoping that it harkens back a little bit to that amazing twenty ten comic book series called con Ruling in Hell, which, if you have not read that suggest you go back and check it out. Definitely covers that zone between when he got dropped off and when we see him later.
16:55 So yeah, I'm super excited about it. What do you guys think? What do you think? Paul? Oh, well, if you're not excited about this radio drama, yes should be, because this has actually been ges dating for a while and is the brainchild of none other than a writer director, Nicholas Meyer, who we've been lucky enough to have on this show. Of course, this is the gentleman who conceived and directed Star Trek to the Wrath of Khan and Star Trek six The Undiscovered Country. So you know, there is no greater Star Trek luminary than this guy. Right. He understands drama, He understands these characters. He created a lot of these characters, right, and these situations, and this is a heck of a cast. I mean, you've got Navien Andrews, who was so good on Loss, and I don't know if everybody is hip to Rin Schmidt, who they have playing Marlon mcgivers mcguivers if you want to shatter it up a bit there, But anybody here watch on Apple TV for All Mankind.
17:53 Absolutely, yeah, absolutely, If you're not, you should be. But this is the same actress who plays Margot Madison on that show recent Defectie Margo Madison, and she's a dynamite performer. And the fact that they landed her in addition to you know, Navine and all these other folks, I mean, it's going to be amazing. So with this pedigree, I think it's super exciting. I think the chance radio drama you get to use your imagination, you know, and really visualize things and have a more interactive experience. I'm super excited for this thing. And I think it's nine nine episodes or six six or nine, I'm not positive, but we definitely will be reviewing them on this podcast a podcast reviewing a podcast, yep, right here. So that's something to look forward to. Anybody want to add anything about con before we move on.
18:52 I was gonna say it's interesting because we don't have Lieutenant Sulu Captain Sulu, so it's interesting how we're going to tie the past and the future together. M I didn't. You're right, you're absolutely right. Time travel, yeah, time travel, Yeah. I suld Star Trek six though. Ye. Yes, but not in Rapa Kan they have George. Yeah, I'm sorry to go ahead. No, no, I'm just it's it's interesting, I wonder. Yeah, it was interesting.
19:34 Yeah, Marlene's already passed away by by two. So who in the combination? Mcgiver? Marla okay, Marla okay? And what were you going to say? Vic? I don't. I forgot now, oh oh, I just when I when I heard I know, when I heard George Takay's voice, I thought, oh my gosh, that's awesome that they got him on because he's he's still quite active, but he is. Yeah, he keeps on going. So I look forward to listening to this.
20:18 He's like the energy energizer Bunny. He just goes and goes and goes and yes, all right, well guess what, guys, We have another one for you, guys, David Roll, The tape. Are awaiting fail the ticket at the prescheduled time. The transponders are active, but they are not responding to any health from the enterprise which means they're even having comes babble or something else. We need to. Get with an emergency beaming range without attracting any cling on attention. I recommend this slow approach. Buying a low impulse will keep splothing noise limit at the premotion their sense. Course, we'll not be able to tell support from the dust particles.
21:02 Well, we have to move it a fraction of impulse and shut down all non essential systems. But if we were invisible it might be worth it. My calculations we would reach Canfortia in four hours. I can live with that ortagus plot. Of course, the picious box. Four hours, Yeah, that won't work for me. Explain yourself, Lieutenant, why are. We tiptoeing around these Klingons. It's obvious they know about the Captain doctr Mavenga. Our priority should be getting them out fast, and how do you propose we do that without violating a border treaty. Hypothetically, even if there were a way, the interference from the dust belt makes transporting impossible.
21:44 I've thought about both problems. We warp into the planet's thermosphere energize and warp out. Simple warping into a low planetary orbit it's reckless. Have you ever done that? No, but I could. Such a dangerous maneuver is rarely attempted. I could see the oput atmosphere. Maybe we spin the boon in this atmosphere, our whole would be the cabbage. I won't let that happen. Also, residual warpfield prohibits transport. Well, and theory one could look at a signal through the residual field. I don't mean to step on Master's box to us, of course, but you just have to calibrate the fease inducers to the distortion only like really fasted.
22:28 Yeah, so my plan checks off all the boxes. Where is there any evidence that Klingons know about our people? Total calm, silence out there, not even a whisper, and spots plan makes the most sense. You have your. Orders, all right? So Eric, what is the pole question this week? Okay? From the episode we reviewed last week? In the Strange New World's episode Shuttle Too, can foy Erica Ortigaz committed in subordination in an attempt to save Captain Pike and Doctor Benga from the Klingons. Do you agree with her actions? And I think there's another scene where she says, no, that doesn't work for me, which is the actual insubordination.
23:12 But sixty five percent of our responders said yes, they agree with her actions. Thirty five percent said no. I can only assume those thirty five percent are people in the military in subordinations. Never okay, anyway, that's of course, of course she was justified. Of course she was, because that's what makes for good writing. Anybody else. I disagree, Well, I guess jumping. We go, let's go. We'll start with. In the words of in the words of Captain James T. Kirk, that's mutiny, mister. I mean it basically is you have this is a the whole history of Star Trek. It's very name, not this naval, but you know this naval and it's it's a military ship, right admittedly primarily meant to be a ship of exploration. But there is a chain of command and you have to follow it. You just can't go off half cocked and do what you want to do, right You Basically rank determines what your authority level is. And at the end of this episode, she gets come down on hard for violating it, and she gets relieved her duty. That's appropriate It's one of the few times, realistically on this show that we've seen the consequences of your actions because people are like, we will steal the US's enterprise. I mean, how many times does that happen? Right, Mealers go off and do it.
24:41 There's no consequences for the behavior, and especially in a military situation when you're you know, way with life is in the line, you have all of the options presented to your commanding officer, who waighs all the choices then makes their final decision. It doesn't matter that, you know, she's not justified by breaking the rules. I mean, she's you know, maybe a good thing happened because she did in terms of the story, right, well, everybody that save sooner because she justified breaking the rules. But that doesn't mean that she gets off scott free. You know, it's great that the people got rescued, but she still broke the rules. And you cannot have somebody in your command who's going to do that. You know, she you know, got let off easy with the warning, but if she screws up again out the airlock with you, yeah, you cannot have that. So, yeah, she's not justified at all.
25:38 I do not agree. Okay, Eric says, well, if you're a military, I am former military, and there is a chain of command. They admitted the fact that he was almost to the shuttle when they beamed him in, and that risked damage the ship, which could have been damaged the crew. Just as this episode we saw Scott to get lit into by not asking for extra help. She kind of got lit into because she kind of did her own thing. And I know, we like seeing all these great characters doing their independent things, but it's also a Federation ship, and federationship does have rules to follow.
26:34 Yeah, and we knew as the viewers, we knew that the Klingons were just hired hands for Captain Bitha and that they actually weren't there on the behest of the Klingon Empire, but they didn't know that on the show. Pike didn't know that, and Una did not know that. For all they knew the Klingons were going to turn around and open fire on them. They didn't know the information that we knew, so I don't and they did open at that. Yeah, and that classic Star Trek five getaway where they warp away from the Photon torpedo like check Op did in Star Trek five one of the best movies ever made, by the way, got to throw that in there, but yeah, yeah, so what do you think David five being the best movie?
27:21 But I mean, well, what, yeah, back was a really good But I have to incline to agree with Paul there, because yeah, that makes a lot of sense in to train of command where you just have to follow the rules. I mean, real life does not have plot on her, so you know. But yeah, other than that, I think you can still have a good show even though you get the in subordination ah that she got on the show, and I think it was in a way she did get in trouble for what she did. But I don't know if the out the airlocks should have been that kind of extreme type of a dishonored kind of stuff.
28:10 But yeah, I don't know. To me, I think it's more of a what she got probably, but at the same time it probably could have been more extreme. So but yeah, to me, I I'm kind of in between. For me, I don't know, it's like I agree, but I don't agree show. Yeah, I'm kind of in the middle, all right, Switzerland. I mean that's that's part for the chorus, David, that's here. How we end up is somewhere in the middle. Yeah, but that. There are.
28:50 Married. He didn't care about dating. All right, Well, guys, that wraps up our polls. You can go to Trek Talking and Beyond and vote in our polls. I'll try to get some more up next week about tonight's episode. But back by popular demand, we have a segment we haven't done in quite a while, and we do have a somewhat of a theme song play, and you. Know what that music means. It's once again time to put on your thinking caps and join us for Star Trek Trivia time with Uncle Jim. Okay, and that's me Uncle Jim, And we're gonna start off with with a question for V. You're ready, V, you got your thinking cap on? I do? All right?
29:39 What is the Riker maneuver and how is it relevant to this week's episode? All right? This was one of my favorite bits in the Bloper Real. The Riker maneuver is what Riker always did, flinging his leg over the pair to sit down, and it was it came about I can't remember how he injured his back, but Jonathan freak uh did it that way that just helped him somehow. How it's relevant to this week's episode. In the blooper reel, the Kirk character is trying to do that, except it's a giant The chair has a giant back to it, like the old style captain's chairs, and so he I'm sorry, people, it just cracked me up every time. So he can't get his leg over it, and he starts, you know, getting upset, and says, can somebody fix this chair? But he tried and failed epically.
30:45 Yes, that that was rather hilarious. It was. All right, David, you ready, you got your thinking cap on and your trouble. Yep. All right, let's see if if our listeners at home can beat the truck Sperts on this one. All right, here we go, David. What is the name and registering number of the fictional Star Trek starship in this week's episode? Well, from what I remember, it's the kind of the same name of the episode Adventure Hour, but without the hour, so it just the Adventure. Well, did I have a registry US or was it? I think it was USSH Adventure.
31:28 The registry number wise very small from what I remember, it was twenty twenty dash one. That's right. The truck sports are batt in one hundred. I hope you guys at home are keeping up? Sorry, did I fall asleep all to what's going on? You're ready? What's the name of the fictional show in this week's episode? Oh?
32:08 God, the fictional show because it's like fictional, right, because it's like made up? Yeah, I believe it's kind of a play on words from a famous phrase from the other fictional show, Star Trek. So I think it was called the Final Frontier. Yes, shock and Dismay. Huh what did I win? One of the best Star Trek movies ever? By the way, Okay, Charles, are you ready see I hope our I hope our listeners are keeping score here? Okay, what famous author does Spock claim to be a descendant of? In this episode?
32:51 Well, on stir Trek six, Spock used the quote if you eliminate the impossibility, whatever remains howibrand probable, must be the truth, which was a Sherlock's Home reference, and of course Sherlock Home was being fictional. We're actually talking about author Cornan Doyle. Okay, Sir author corn and Doyle. Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding All right, the pressure's on, Eric. Okay, let's do it so far. Everybody, Okay, you're ready? Yeah, all right. What episode was the first time that the recreation room was mentioned?
33:34 The Recreation Room? Uh, that one's easy because I'm a huge TAS fan. It was The Practical Joker, And I actually just rewatched it last night to remember what all the recreation room stuff was, so I've got it fresh in my head. But yeah, it was The Practical Joker. It's the episode where the Enterprise goes through a cloud of weird space dust and it sort of gets a mind of its own. I think what the Sulu says something like it's the equivalent of the ship having a mental breakdown or something like that basically tries to like joke with all the people and half kill them. It's it's strangely dark if you kind of actually think about it. But of course it's rendered in a very fun way because it's the animated series.
34:16 Yeah, with that choppy animation style. Absolutely, absolutely, Okay, David, you ready? Yep? Okay. When was the last time that the names of Gene Roddenberry and Alexander Courage both are displayed in the credits? WHOA, that's obscure. That's obscure. But I don't usually watch credits, so I don't even know who could that whatever off the show? Yeah, your history? Yeah, lord, no idea he wrote?
34:57 He didn't he composed the star Trek. You say, okay, okay, right there, considering that it went from the nineteen sixties, I want to say that time frame nineteen sixty. It was the last time was on TOS. That's right? Good? Can I have my promotion back? All right? Well, let's just stay well, let's just stay so Paul for a tough one. All right, my browisansome Mount plays T. K. Bellows, the creator of the Last Frontier? Who is he your characterture of Oh?
35:39 When I hear the name Bellows, I immediately go back to my syndicated reruns. I dream of Genie because you know doctor Bellows of course with the infamous Supreme Officer on that show. But of course anyone who can look at the outfit that. Yeah, audio went down. We lost you, Paul, you got I got my audio one. I know the answer. Wait, all right, are you really gonna steal it? What's the answer? V? Yeah, because I got ripped off of my second question there because it was a duplicate. Anyway, he is a character of the one and only Gene Rodenberry. That's right, He's Gene Roddenberry, exactly right. So we'll have to swing back to that one. So Charles, here's a tough one. Who directed this week's episode? Did we lose Charles two?
36:40 Yeah, gott to hit that mute button? Oh? Let me think. Wasn't it done by two takes freaks? Yes? It was? And oddly enough, he was directed as the director of the fictional episode as well. If you read the complete credits in the episode, he's credited as just director as well. So and Eric, you get the final question. Okay, I'm ready double jeopardy. I'm gonna nail it. Paul Wesley plays Captain Maxwell Saint. What Star Trek actor?
37:24 Is he a character? Uh? Well, I mean, of course. This is Paul Wesley's finest, in my opinion, finest interpretation of our dear mister Shatner. He does all of the things, he does all of the pauses, he does all of the poses, he does all of the the weird lines that kind of makes sense but also kind of don't make sense. So yeah, yeah it was. It was William Shatner. It was William. Yeah. The only thing he didn't do was have a strategically. Yeah, or like try to kiss somebody against their will.
38:09 But he did lose his brain cells, so yeah, we need our brain cells. I got that one line where what does Chample say. It's something like we need them for science reasons. Something off. All right, So guys, that was trivia with Uncle Jim. We hadn't done that in quite a while, so maybe we'll start doing it again, who knows. But at any rate, now it's time for our cadet training with Charles. And this is the part of the show where Charles let you guys know what episodes you can go to watch to catch references that refer to this episode. So take it away, Charles.
38:51 Okay, I'm hoping I'm back connected because I got kicked off. Okay, let's stirn off with Star Trek six The Undiscovered as somebody made a trivia question when Stock Spock quach Sherlock Holmes. I didn't catch chance to grab him. But the first thing I thought when I saw this episode was Black Mirror. Two episodes from that series. T A s Wait, what Black what's the connection? To Black Mirror. Sorry I missed that, Allister. I thought about those two episodes when I saw this episode the first time. That reminds me.
39:42 On Star Trek. Yeah, I see, yeah, okay, okay, got it. Another trivia question came up was tas the Practical Joker season two, episode three, the first use of a recreation room. And then of course TNG and Canter Farpoint first season first episode was the first holidack we saw data walking through it, trying to whistle ah, TNG that bid goodbye. Season one, episode twelve, the first use of Dixon Hill, And of course.
40:27 I've seen an investigator and that ties into yes. And then TNG elementary to your data where data goes in? Is Sherlock Holmes an investigator and they want to challenge that's going to challenge data, not Sherlock Holmes. And TNG actually had about fifty six shows and references to holidacks. Voyager had ninety seven shows and references to holodecks, so those are too serious. That are very common for holidecks.
41:09 Of course nine had hollow sweets, which would be confused with. They require much more cleaning than a holid deck does. Yes, and there weren't as many episodes in reference to those as there were the other two the other series, because Enterprise references at once, Discovery story references the card references. But how many times does does Quirk say the word hollow? Sweet? That's what I want to know, Charles.
41:50 Many the things you learn on this show. I'm just like, it's educational. Can you hear me now? Can? Yes? We can? Sound good? You sound perfect? Perfect? W TAF. Paul I got kicked off too. It's Friday. Oh good. I feel so much less lonely now. Okay, So, as I said every week over on our Facebook page, Truck Talking and Beyond, we asked you guys what you thought about this week's episode, and Eric is going to tell us our fan reaction. I certainly am. Josue Torro said, loved it, exclamation Point gave it a ten. D Cole said, I very much enjoyed the show. It wasn't the classical format that I go for with all the technology. I started watching expecting to be disappointed, but I wasn't. It reminded me of some of the Holideck challenges in the TNG series, of which Charles just reminded us. I really did enjoy how they made a bit of fun of the sixties era TOS show. It was a fun watch.
42:57 Hey, thanks. D Tory the Roads said five. Not my favorite episode. Seem more like an expose for the actors to showcase their range of acting abilities more than anything to do with the actual with actual star trek. Not terrible, not great. Yeah, that's solid mill middle of the road right there. Janella Roye said ten. Loved it, great fun. Laurie Johnson said this episode was so great. Loved the lesson for Scotti on asking for help. Yeah, Laurie, I can't wait to talk about that. She gave it a nine. Rob Bellow said a for effort, but I'm tired of gimmick episodes. The prototype Holodeck just another fan service gimmick. Wish we could see strange new worlds instead. Yeah, five, thanks Rob.
43:46 Michael Kaff said one bad episode. If season three continues this way, they should stop the series with this season. Michael, Michael's very angry. His little Bruce said that was brilliant too, exclamation points more. What a spectrum of opinion we have there? Well, you know, there's there's a lot. It's like whiplash here you know, everybody's got their own thing going on. So yeah. Ten plus from Hazel and Aaron Ray wrote us a little mini pedagraph here. I thought this show was fun and great. The meta commentary of the episode was fantastic, and it seemed like the cast had a lot of fun stretching their acting muscles a bit to do something outside of the box. Well written. I really loved the character Anson Mount portrayed. I didn't even recognize him at first. The Kirk parody was hilarious strange. New Worlds is so much fun all caps, and I liked how it doesn't take itself too seriously all the time.
44:47 Jonathan Fraakes should get a nickname like mister star Trek or something more clean clever that I haven't thought of. Nine. Thanks Aaron Ray, that was a great review. Elizabeth Boo Deck last but not least, gave it a ten. I really enjoyed this episode. It is now my favorite little huggy emoji, little livlong prosper emoji that apparently and I haven't I forgot to double check the math on this, because some of these are a little weirdly mathed. But theoretically this gives us a fans score of seven point seven for this one. But you know, if you if you were to what is it in statistics where you like eliminate the top one in the bottom one, it feels like it's like it's like an eight. Yeah, basically our fans are saying like eight.
45:32 So there you go, round up, right, round up, round up, round up. Not the weed killer, but you know, the. Swiss, the what not? The chemical children. Yeah. No, so that's that's pretty solid score. So we should probably talk about the episode. We could talk about it absolutely. Yeah, Paul, do you want to, like, uh kind of remind us what happens in this one? And Jeffrey yeah, yeah, yeah. For me, the biggest takeaway was, you know, we watched that clip from the previous week's episode right where Spock is talking about, you know, recommending strategy, and he says, I recommend a slow approach, right, I'm quoting him correctly. Well, apparently that same advice does not apply to mister Spock's love life because he is just like books on right, it's like by Christine and he's like, you know, now he's on the Noonian sing train man and he's like, you know, he's taking the dance lessons and doing all kinds of I believe the technical biological word is canoodling with so during the course of their lessons. So, but that's to be discussed later. A Space Adventure hour is basically a kind of have your cake and eat it to episode, right, because we want to be able to have fun and riff on things that previously had never ever ever been part of the original series canon, which of course gets a lot of people's kill wrapped around their testes. You know they can't handle.
46:59 A yeah, but. I don't want in my. Head, well me, welcome to the show. Okay, I just. Oh, you're welcome to do the gender equivalent anytime. So anyhow, the idea was that, okay, we would have a situation as Eric intimated on the animated series, we've had references. To something akin to the Holodeck before, and well, at some point when they first got the whole deck, you had to like try it out right and see what it was, put it in beta mode and see what happens and give it a trial run. And so that's what happens here. The Enterprise is sort of chosen to test a new hologram Holo deck excuse me, And who better to do that than a dance instructor and Goren enthusiastic lah on Nudian sing, right, And so she decides to do that, and she gets the idea much as Data was very fond of playing his version of the Conan Doyle Mysteries, as Charles reminded us ad infinitum that she was apparently fond of some crazy sixties detective series, right, And so she decides to do that, and you know, see if she can basically create a mystery that would
48:33 be very challenging to solve, and of course the ship programs itself accordingly, but they also have to be parked right next to a neutron star and that happens to create all kinds of power drain stuff that threatens everything. So Lawn and company, including mister Spock, who manages to take his tongue out of her throat long enough to be able to solve the mystery and fix the Holodeck to restore power and uh, and they end up discovering a surprising connection between the holidex AI and and so, yeah, it's interesting. So we had a lot of stuff going on. I you know, I'll let others put their opinions out now that I've done a summary, and I can share mine later if you want to hear them. But but I think we should go to I think we should go to the Yeah, we are all freaked out. Now we've talked about horror movies and genitals, the freaking bail.
49:31 I want to see what other buttons. Yeah, yeah, I'll. I'll have to tell you something later about the whole kilt thing that after the show, well, I loved it. I in fact watched it like three times. And for the people who criticized it the raby at a one, come on, it is not a bad episode, and then the whole thing. If the season three continues this way, they should stop the series with this season. Nope, sorry, they've already green lighted it through five, so you're just gonna have to endure. But like my current favorite Star Trek show, DS nine, you have those episodes that are fun in between the serious ones. And I think the way they did this with having the stereotyp not stereotypes, the caricatures of Gene Roddenberry, except they didn't want to get it too close to the real deal. They just they had suggestions of Gene and then of course Shatner and then at the end with the whole bloopers, which reminded me of.
50:56 That. Sorry, my brain just shut down. Stargate SG. One. One of my favorite episodes was Wormhole Extreme, where they did a show within a show and they had all these hilarious sloopers at the end. So I'm I'm sorry, But for whoever thought it was, you know, bad episodes or a gimmick, eh, it was great and you can't go wrong with Franks directing it so true? That true? That Yeah. I just I read a lot of comments. I just want to ask you guys this question. Why is it. Why is it that every fan that hates it premise is their answer by saying, I'm a huge fan of TOS, But but why is that? Why is it that people feel that if they grew up watching TOS, that everything after that isn't Star Trek, and that they're justified in saying everything stinks because they're old enough to remember TOS. I don't understand that. I don't be enough to remember TOS, and I've never started a sentence like that, Oh, well, you know, I grew up watching TOS, but.
52:12 Just you know, there's a highly likely thing. I mean I did too, man, I mean a lot of us did, us old elders, right. But I think there's a certain degree of thing where there's nostalgia right where we remember. I'm sure we all remember the first time we saw, you know, Devil in the Dark to reference something I know, Eric is it is fine, right, we all have our favorite things. But I think a lot of times what happens, my theory with certain kinds of folks, not everybody, but certain kinds of folks, right, is you know, there's nostalgia, and then there's your perception of what the rules of life and your memories are, and if somebody veers away from that and does something differently, somehow, your identity becomes threatened, right Because I think I thought about this a little bit, and I think this is a lot of what we saw during the Discovery years, because boy, howdy did people freak out over that show. You know, It's like, oh my god, the Klingons looked different. I think I need to like go and you know, have an enema. I mean, it was just ridiculous, right, I mean, and I think that we have the same kind of thing going on here.
53:18 It's just like, you know, for years and years they watched syndicated reruns of original series, and it became like, you can't write a new chapter of the Tora guys, I've memorized the old one, right, And somehow it's really threatening to have your people fear change, I think sometimes, and it threatens their identity to have things that be different than what they knew and found comfort in for so long. I said, I don't understand that myself. I really don't. Does that make any sense? Do you think this a validity in that assessment? Yeah? Well, I think I think that they look at it. It's like it's like the holy Grail and God forbid you should try to change it somehow. And I don't know, I just.
54:05 Like it'ious change yeah, sacrilegious. Yeah, like, oh my gosh, how dare you? And I have to admit, for a brief time after TG came out, I didn't want to watch anything else, which is why it took me a while to watch Voyager and DS nine and everything like that. But I, you know, I embraced you know, I finally watched the shows and I wound up loving them and kicked myself for not seeing them sooner. So I guess people, you know, the whole thing with with Star Trek to me is well, it's also you know, going back to the infinite diversity in infinite combinations, and so that's that's kind of what the I mean, that's what the show is. You have to see it in different in a different light. And I know that Franks Jonathan Frake's went into that show with the best of intentions and having a great time showing the actors, you know, show seeing their their range, their acting range, and just having a great time. And I don't I don't see what's wrong with that. I mean, they still honored the show, and yeah, I don't know.
55:21 If you don't like it, I'm sorry. I guess it's you know, I want to invite you to my Star Trek party. I think I had something they'll do with a lot of what you guys are talking about, I think if I want to put my input here, but I think it has a lot to do with canon. When people see a show, they're like, Okay, this is great, and then when they start changing it, it's like the level of like this kind of like starts to wobble and then once something really does change all of a sudden, it's just like goes up and down. And then, for instance, for me, when I started watching Enterprise, it took me a while to get used to and I'm sorry to say this, but what the cleanos looked like? And I was like, what what did they do that for? Could it was supposed to be you know, all this stuff about them looking like humans and whatnot, But then they made a really interesting take on why they changed and everything.
56:13 So to me, I think a lot of that has to do with people want Cannon. They watch it before Cannon and take a look at Star Wars, right, what happened with that? So I oh, it was just a lot of things that people like and they just stick with it, and then if they change it, they're like But then, like with V said, you know, it took a while to watch something and then you end up liking it, So it's like, yeah, yep. Well. I also I think that people confuse can't what's the word. If you're watching TJ. Hooker, Okay, he's driving down the road in his cop car and in the very next scene he's in a trans am. You know, his car just changed from one to another. Is that cannon that he was driving a cop car a minute ago and now he's in a trans am with no explanation as to why the car's changed. Or he pulls out his pistol and he's shooting at the bad guy.
57:07 They cut back and now he has an M sixteen in his hands. Now that's called up. That's called continuity faility. Yes, And I think a lot of times fans confuse continuity with cannon. There are two different things, and I think I think fans confuse it all the time, you know, justified or unjustified, and they just do it. But I loved this episode the I thought this I actually I got done watching it. I'd go back and watch it a second time. I never laughed so hard. When Chapel says we need our brain cells for science stuff, it's like, oh my god. Or when they're on the holid deck and Ortegas says, damn it, I'm an actor, not a doctor.
57:51 Oh my god. I was just hilarious. I thought it was great. I thought that Paul Wesley doing his inner Shatner was placeless. How could people not like that? I'm you know, it was done with so much fun and so much affection. It wasn't meanhearted, you know. I thought it was very tasteful. I thought it was great. And the alien holding up the eyeballs on the little poles and you could see the eyeball poles. I just it was just it reminded me of to Os, you know, every minute of the way it did, you know, And when who was it Chapel or Otagas walks up to the. Door, Yeah, we lose.
58:41 My dog is like layers right here with me. Here are you going to Leah? There she is? There, she is, you know, when she's trying to get in the door and the door won't open and she's pounding on the door to get the door to open. You know, I thought it was very tasteful. I thought it was well done. The story. The story I thought was was very good too. You know. It wasn't just your typical Holid Deck story. There was a little bit more to it, and a lot of fans just couldn't get past the fact that, well, it's another Dixon Hill, it's another data with it. It was there was more to it than that. If you opened up your eyes and watched and it was fun. It was an enjoyable and you know I had. I loved it, So I'm going to go by Now I gotta go let my dog out, So I'm gonna step away for a minute and I'll leave the mic to you guys. I'll be right back.
59:28 Back and real quick. I did read about they filmed it in an actual mansion. They didn't have a set. They wanted to find some really bizarre out there mansion and they looked around and they found one somewhere there, somewhere, and I think it was Hollywood, but yeah, so they really went the extra mile to find the perfect place to find it, to find a place to shoot. So cool. Well, the who done it sort of collect all the people in the room and figure it out thing is definitely reminiscent of Clue, right, and the Clue movie is great, And of course we've all played the game probably multiple times throughout our childhood, so I instantly got a clue vibe front it. But from the very start of the episode, I loved the design of the Final Frontier ship. It had these great like real to real tapes that were spinning and just trying to make everything look very dynamic and futuristic right from the beginning, So they visually brought you into it, and the quality of the sound was dulled too, right, they kind of went to mono sound.
1:00:39 It had that kind of like tiny, poorly recorded sort of vibe to it. So I think all of those kind of visual and auditory cues pull you into the mood of the of the show. And then it was like a dramatic change when the first actual strange New World scene starts where Lawn starts doing her low about the neutron star and stuff, and so you got to see the juxtaposition of the old way of doing things in the new way of doing things. Great fantastic opener to this episode. Of course, I love this episode. I might not love fun episodes of Star Trek. I'm never gonna watch the zombie episode ever again. I've watched this one twice and I'm probably gonna watch it three, four or five times again in the future, much in the same way I've watched Subspace Rhapsody million times. Just very interesting and fun to me. I loved on sort of like Carmen san Diego, look right, she had the red hat, and that was a show that I don't know, one iteration, many many years ago, was really great, and then they redid it that when my kid was a kid and we watched the new version of that. That was very fun.
1:01:53 There's all the bits and all the fun stuff, but like, what was the show really about? And to me, it all comes down to that scene where Uhura and what's her name, It's like something Flossy or Glossy or I can't remember what her character's name was. But she gives this kind of speech about the show, the meta show, the show within the show being canceled, and she's like, you know, this show was conceived as as a way to do social commentary with rubber masks, and she essentially is describing Star Trek, right, but she's describing it within the context of the kind of meta which, by the way, the whole idea of either fourth wall breaks or inception style like meta shows that I love that stuff too.
1:02:44 If somebody looks at the camera and tells me something is the Watcher, I practically lose my shit because I just love that stuff. But that speech that she gives, I think was the whole purpose of this episode was to kind of highlight you know that that start. It's not making fun of Star Trek, but Star Trek is this thing that started as just kind of people trying to get a paycheck and doing their jobs and doing the silly science fiction show, and it grew into this fifty nine year old franchise that became so important to people. And that's that's the way things work, right, They're like little tiny changes along the way, little tiny things that mean stuff to people. So that I thought that speech was an absolute necessary part of this episode to kind of not make it just silly, but to give it to sort of clue people in. And if you were watching this episode and you didn't really get it, I hope that when she gave that speech, that's when you were like, oh, okay, now now I get it. Now it makes sense to me. So yeah, anyway, all the great references, I mean, the Captain's chair had a cup holder.
1:04:01 That's fantastic, and of course it didn't. You know, you all were talking about Cannon and David mentioned that people care about Cannon. I think that's absolutely true. I also think that people have their own concept of what the canon is. And for example, a lot of people haven't seen who are die hard Star Trek fans say that they love the show so much never seen the animated series, wouldn't have any idea that there was an original past version of the Halo Deck out there. And so, you know, I was reading comments on the internet too, where people are like, oh my god, I introduced the holid Deck eighty years too early and blah blah blah blah blah, this and that. I'm like, yeah, dude, but it was there, and we know from episodes of Voyager, for example, this whole idea of what Scotty says at the end of this episode, which is that the Holideck requires its own computing power and its own power supply, so literally, when like the main computer on the ship goes down, the Holodeck still runs because it's a totally independent system within the ship. So there was there was absolutely no cannon breaking by bringing in a Holodeck episode this early into Strange New Worlds. I think people just weren't really aware that the animated series episode existed. So so many other great things to talk about, but I want to make sure everybody else has a chance. I just know that I loved this episode. It was it was right up there in my I mean, of the four episodes we've
1:05:32 seen so far, it's one of my top two. I bet you can guess which one the other one is. And Eric, I just I wanted to throw in because a lot of these haters didn't watch Discovery, and Discovery had a lot of holograms in it. And if you if people remember when we're introduced to Pike and the Enterprise and season two of Discovery and they have to tow it back to Earth. What was the reason why they had to tow it back to Earth? Do you remember? Was it because the they had was that well that was before he ripped all the holograms out of it. But yeah, the holograms were causing were havoc with the ship and they had to they had to remove the holograms.
1:06:13 So hologram technology was around during Discovery and TAS, two shows which most people that love Tas refused to watch so they would know that. So yeah, cool, all right, back from walking le She's all set. Those of you who are wondering, she's happy now we. Might be saving Paul for the end. Charles, do you want to mention your thoughts on this episode? Okay, one of the things, and it took somebody else's comment that I sort of realized what the show was about.
1:06:57 And I think one of the thing is that really caught me was then rewatching and hearing Unachen Riley's speech of Sonny Lupiana, which then I realized after hearing had the comment looking like, oh, that's the seal ball. So we sit there and recognize the lady of Star Trek that, yeah, oh, as you admids saying I wasn't taking money from the I wasn't taking money from. The mob.
1:07:38 I took my own money because there's money that I sold the house and money that I'd gotten from my divorce, and realizing oh, we're getting into the Desi reference as she ran the studio. So I love the reference, the fact that, yeah, we're doing a great talk about referencing her. One of the things I looked up as we're talking about the recreation room. The concept of the Holidack originated in nineteen sixty eight, when Gene Bronberry came up with the idea of a simulated outdoor recreation area on the Enterprise for the third season of Star Trek, the original series.
1:08:22 The idea never came to fruition, probably because of budget constraints. Roden Berry thought about that back in tos. He just didn't have the money to do it. So that concept is out there. I think they just don't want to admit the fact that that concept still going and should be out there. I really enjoyed the episode. I think the only downfall I had the episode was that I didn't like the new relationship hip of Spock. So Spock's head the one relationship ends with the Vulcan, and now it's Christine, now Leon. It's like, okay, is this a flirtatious Spock who goes between the girls? I get to this our new riker.
1:09:22 He's just dating around man dating rounds. Okay, yeah, Christine is the one who dropped him. It breaks Cannon. It breaks Cannon because Spock never had any interest in anybody. It breaks Cannon. I'm sorry, breaks Cannon. I'm done. I'm out mic drop. But I love the references to some of the different actors and characters from the creation of Star Trek, So I enjoyed that part. It's just the dancing part. I ended up skipping the Blue real last night because it's like, Okay, yeah, I'm done. I don't want to see the dance scene another time, and another kiss.
1:10:09 So. Nobody's given him to me yet, but I'm going to give this one a nine. Love the episode. I just didn't need the relationship storyline in there, but I love the idea with specially pushing Scotty. We get to see a lot more of the miracle Worker from Scotty, and that characters really getting a good boost. I just hope that he replaces Pellya soon because I find her voice just like like fingernails on a chalkboard. I just don't like her character at all, and I want to see more Scotty and less of her. Oh yeah, by the way, I'm right there with you. I'm going to give it a nine point eight because Paul loves the decimals, so I'm going to go with a nine point eight.
1:10:58 Yeah, me too. Waffling, Eric, what did you get it? What do you think? Vige? Oh? I forgot to mention, if I can say real quick, as a former competition ballroom dancer, like one hundred years ago, Spock and on are dancing tango, not just any tango, but an Argentine as they say tango, and that's very intricate. If you watched it, you could see the moves. So they really had to know those steps very well to be able, because I've tried, you know, the whole walking and chewing bubble gum thing. Well, dancing, especially of an intricate dance like that, and remembering their lines. I thought was a great achievement because that's not easy. And I still I still liked it. I think it was hot.
1:12:00 And my my idea is that Bock is logical, so he's that logical brain is able to get over people quicker than the average person, so that's why he goes from person to person. But yeah, solid, I would say, let me do a nine point nine. Why not? Mh. But still Spock falls prey to the most sexy of dances, right like. Yeah, that's that is one that that is the dance of love. You know. Well, Paul Paul gets the caboose on this one, buddy. You heard what everyone else has to say.
1:12:40 Did everyone get their scores out? No? I didn't. Actually Leo went because I took her. I quickly go through. And I liked the spoof on the Star Trek show of it being from the nineteen sixties. I'm who doesn't like a good you know, uh spin off of a show, But I also liked that the I actually like the relations of house Bok is slowly getting into relations with Lawn, and I think that's pretty good.
1:13:24 The other thing that I want to say is that why did they do to testing next to a neutron star? What the heck? I mean, it's just supported to be in the future. Don't they know what neutron stars can do? Right? So? I mean that point of the whole show is just like, Okay, I know it put to be like a bee story or whatever, but it was just like, don't be next to a problem that you got already a problem going on. That's going on. So I mean so that the captain didn't know what was going on with the Holler deck or anything like that, but I mean, just testing something you shouldn't take it out to a danger with don and be like, yeah, okay, let's try something. But anyways, uh, overall, I like to show it was fun. I enjoyed it.
1:14:10 Who else Okay, this is gonna be a spoiler part. Who else didn't know that it was Spock as the killer? You know, the whodune situation? Did anyone else figure that out before what happened? Now? I think it was at the very end that I realized it. All right. Yeah, for me, I didn't know. It actually took me by surprize. Mm hmm. God. I think they did a really good job. And just for that, I'm gonna wade just through at ten mm hm. And you know what that means, don't you, David. That means that there's a perfect recreation of mister Spock floating around in some holidecks somewhere. They could be recalled at any moment in any Star Trek future like Starfleet Academy, for instance, you could show up just.
1:15:03 Saying just saying, okay, go ahead, Paul, all right. No, I think we covered a lot of ground certainly on here. Uh. My initial take was it was I was a little slow to warmed to this one. Right. Eventually I think won me over, but it took a while for me. I think one of the fans uh commented when Eric was reading their quotes that people had given that it really seemed like it was a design to give a lot of the actors a chance to do something different and kind of have fun. We did you lose my audio again? Uh? Oh, no audio, you're back now, Okay, it was this program anyway, you got it?
1:15:52 Is it okay? All right? It seemed like it was, you know, a lot of built with a lot of attention. Let me let me jump and I'll come back. I don't know why do He sounds really good for a minute and then he just drops out on us. Yeah, we lost you again. I also like that he uses the word for cocta because I know what that means. I like the kilt thing myself. Oh yeah, yeah, I know that I lost it over that. I'm yeah, and uh. Yeah, I said afterwards, I'll tell you about why that's going to make me make it difficult for me at work tomorrow.
1:16:41 I think that one of thet I gotta say I was when we saw the original trailers, I was concerned for this episode. I'm like, oh my god, but I got to say. One of the strengths of Strange New Worlds is that there we go hear you're perfect and. I don't what the hell, but guys, sorry about that. It's connected. Maybe's only somebody of us can be on here at one time or something, but anyhow, I'll try to be brief in case it doesn't go. It took me a while. I think it was a really fun showcase for a lot of the actors to do things. Totally love Paul Wesley. It was like he was basically, you know, responding to like years of Nudnick's you know out there. You know he's not shutting enough. I don't like him, and he was this is basically just being fuck you. You know, he just like did the greatest you know, I oh no, I mean he was just so chewing the scenery with his shatter impersonation I and you know he's wearing basically the same outfit Robert Wagner war and it takes a thief and it was hilarious, right, I mean it was just you know a lot of great fun reverence for sixties television in here, for sure.
1:17:44 So I really liked what he was doing. Want to echo what somebody else said, who I can't remember, but really loving Scottie in here. And I'm with you, Uncle Jennifer Elliott was out the door today, I'd be like, that's okay. So yeah, I think he's bringing a lot of energy and he's not mimicking James Dewan. He's bringing his own very authentic interpretation of Scotty to the role. So I really like those two quite a bit. I did not like I don't want to bog down in Minutia, right because I hate that. But I did not like Lawn's wacky Carmen san Diego look, and what was up with the makeup they gave her. It was really distracting.
1:18:25 It was like they threw it on thirty seconds. It looked like she just did not look good. So but it was fun. I mean, this is one of those episodes you either embrace the fun of it or just get out right. I mean, there's really not a lot to beyond that. I do have to say, though, it really kind of felt to me like the first like twenty minutes or so of this. I'm like, okay, going back in time here a year and a half or whenever they shot this thing, Right, somebody really enjoyed the hell out of Uss Calistair over on Netflix, as Charles pointed out, right, and this was like their version of that as a way of getting a hold of the story. I don't think it really stands quite as tall as the level of satire and homage that that show does.
1:19:09 That's working on a whole higher level, you know. But this was fun, and I think I get what they were trying to do. It was enjoyable. I could not care less about canon. It's like I just do. So it's fine for me that they were you know, test driving the Holy Deck, you know, on the whole though it was a little uneven for me. It wasn't always as hilariously gut busting funny as I think it was for everyone else. And that's okay, you know, comedy like any piece of artists objective, right, But I enjoyed it. I'm just I really need to get back to exploration, which is what I really watched dar Trek for, right. I need to see them getting out there and having their minds blown by something that you know is less than familiar. There's so much reverence and homaging going on to things we already know, you know, the Gorn and Roger Corby and Trelaine and I know this stuff, right, It's like, I get it. I really need some exploration, though, and I need to see something that we have not seen before, or see something that we do know about, but look at it from a new way that seems fresh and original. So I think this was a fun episode.
1:20:17 I got to, you know, great all of the episodes next to each other though, next to everything that's come before. And while this was fun, I can't get much past to seven. I think seven is about honest for me on this one. So that's where I'll leave it. And again, what's up with this bock thing? Right? I mean? Is apparently flirting isn't a contingent on like confar and the seven year making mating cycle? I mean, or is it? Or is he just right now at beginning year seven and then seven years later? Is amok time? Is that how we're gonna retcon? The math? Is that it? Because he seems to be really going having a not quite a very calm pond. Far Lee hasn't thrown anything yet or punched anything, but he's really a horn dog. I mean it seems like right, he's just like you know, you know, you can't keep it in your pants for a week's bock? I mean you know.
1:21:09 Yeah, that's the way I said. He's half humans, so half of seven years. Good, I guess. So yeah, it's just you know, I mean, great on a curve or something. But I don't know, but I'll be curious to see what they what they do. I can't see that he's gonna have another god police, pardon the expression, full blown relationship with Lawn like he did with Christine. That would seem odd to me, but hopefully that was like a brief thing and he's going to go reflect and think about it. But very interesting. I'm curious to see what's in the opera for tonight. So yeah, something for me, but enjoyable, A nice, a nice thing, you know, good work cast. Well. You know, one of the things I like about Strange New Worlds, Paul, is that they can have complete mood swings from episode to episode, and they're not afraid to do something like a singing episode, which I was one hundred percent positive was gonna sock and it was one of the best ones. You know, they can do different things and make it work, and that's something I like about the show. You never know what you're gonna get from week to week, and generally speaking, they're good.
1:22:14 So kudos to Jonathan Frakes and the people at Strange New world So Charles. Our fans gave it a seven point seven. What about the Truck Spurts. Drek Spurts gave a nine point one. Experts liked this episode. Trek Spurts liked it. That's cool. Well, I think it was that one guy that gave it a one. I think now, yeah, you know that pulled it right now that that hurt? All right, guys, So there you go, and then that's our review for this week. There won't be a show next week because I'm gonna be on vacation, so we can take a week off and reflect on tonight's episode. All right. So you know what that means, don't you. It's time for our Star Trek birthdays, which means which means this.
1:23:23 That was not a clemon song. All right, guys. This is the part of the show where we remember our Star Trek family members who, sadly enough, are no longer with us, and for that we turned to Eric Jim. We start our remembrances this week with actor Paul Lambert. Paul Lambert was an actor who played Mellion in the Next Generation first season episode When the Bow Breaks. He also played Howard Clark in the fourth season episode Devil's Due. This gentleman got his first big on screen role in Spartacus in nineteen sixty What a way to start, huh, and primarily a stage actor, so Tons and tons of stage credits to his name. He was also a play right stage director. He wrote, directed, and acted in his own play at one point called Interior Hollywood Day. You should go see if you can find that. I know, I want to. We lost him all the way back in nineteen ninety seven. Paul Lambert would have had a birthday August first. Happy birthday, Paul. Happy birthday as well to Barbara Townsend, the actress who played Vice Admiral Canal Rosa in Next Generation four season episodes Suddenly Human. She got started in her television career back in the forties and fifties, and you know, mostly did guest star stuff along the way. She's got, you know, some some work in there, not a ton of ton of work. But
1:24:53 of course she was on that show that was after Mash, called After Mash, which I never actually saw, but I don't know, I don't know if it was if it was any good or not. I know it was a sequel to Mash. But anyway, Barbara Townsend would have had a birthday August fourth, just a few days ago, and we lost her back in two thousand and two. Happy birthday to Barbara. Happy birthday as well to David Bryan, the actor who appeared as John Gill in the TOS second season episode Patterns of Force. He was born under a different name, Brian James Davis on August fifth, and graduated from college and became a dorman and then eventually ended up in an acting career. Has seventy seven credits besides Star Trek on his resume, including things like The Untouchables, I Dream of Geenie, Rawhide, Gun Smoke, Mission Impossible, all them shows from Back in the Day, Happy Birthday to David Brian, and last but not least, this is a big in this week. We were just talking about the first lady of Star Trek here and Lucille Ball's birthday was just yesterday. She was born at August sixth, nineteen eleven.
1:26:07 Unfortunately we lost her way back in nineteen eighty nine. She of course, is the actress and comedian best known for her titular role on I Love Lucy, and then became the chief executive of Desilu's Studios, which is often credited with saving Star Trek from the trash heap. I think we all know a lot about Lucille Ball. Of course, her former husband Desi Arnez. When Desilu actually bought Gide Roddenberry's pitch called Star Trek Is in nineteen sixty four, she in effect became the first identifiable individual, legal and commercial owner of what would become the Star Trek franchise.
1:26:52 I think that is pretty cool. She's famous for so many things, not only her show, her involvement in Star Trek, but also her USO tours along the way back in the day. So I think we all owe a huge debt to Lucille Ball for saving the franchise that we all have grown to know and love. So Happy Birthday to Lucille Ball. And that does it for our remembrances this week, so I will pass this flaming birthday candle over to Charms. Thank you, Maren. Let's start off with a Happy birthday to Doug worked as the actress who appeared as Jack our Crusher as Star Trek's next generation family Violation and Journeys.
1:27:42 And Happy birthday to brigid Ron, actress who played Ruby and Star Trek Enterprises second season episode First Flight, Happy birthdaye Owen Joan Cassidy, actress who played tu Less and enterprises four season episode Home and Awakening. Heavy birthday to Clayton Runner, actress who portray Admiral Mark Jamieson and TG's first season episode Too Short a Season. Heavy birthday to Buck Tanita, you mean Ray Bucktaneda, actress who played Dios and DS nine this season episode by the Inferior Light.
1:28:38 Happy birthday, one of my favorite ones. Happy birthday Catherine Hicks, actress who played doctor Gillian Taylor and Star Trek for the Voyage Home character that disappeared from Earth. And then I added one more to my list which I really wanted to add in here. Happy very happy birthday to Sir rock Lofton, actress who played Jake Sisko in seventy one episode of Deep Space nine and very active in the community and the podcast world. Paul, who's on your birthday list. As I hand you this flaming.
1:29:25 Casile, Thank you, Choernles appreciate that. First of all, let's say happy birthday to English actor Stephen Burkoff, who played hey Gath in Deep Space nine's fifth season episode Business as Usual. Stephen Burkoff is quite an acclaimed acting teacher in addition to as many theatrical credits, and during the eighties and early nineties. He was a bad guy in a lot of movies. He got cast as the heavy and could be very menacing performer. So a lot of cool roles that you'll occasionally encounter. Man, So very happy birthday. Indeed, Happy birthday to Molly Hagen. It played e Reese in Deep Space nine second season episode The Gem hadar introductory episode there. Happy birthday to Leland Orser, actor who appeared as a guy in Deep Space nine second season episode Sanctuary as Lovak in third season episode The die Is cast, de Jarin in the Voyager fourth season episode Revulsion, and Loomis in the Enterprise third season episode Carpenter Street.
1:30:32 So what is that? Four spokes of the franchise wheel that leland Orser has been in. Wow, getting a lot of work there, friend, Pretty impressive. So Deep Space nine, Voyager, Enterprise, all over the place, very impressive. I guess that's three because two of them are Space nine episodes. I suck it man, just by the way. Happy birthday to Angus Imrie, British actor who voiced Zero Star Trek Prodigy, which we kind of miss. I think a lot of us were hoping there would be more Prodigy, but I think what we've got is what we're gonna get that, but Zero's super popular character there, which was great. Happy birthday to Louise Sorell, actress who played Raina Kaipik in the third season original series episode Requiem for Methuselah. And let's go back to Prodigy again and say happy birthday to Brent Gray, American actor and singer who voiced lead character Dalrell in Star Trek Prodigy, who was fantastic and did a wonderful job of giving that character a lot of depth and resonance across all the episodes. Big fan of the work.
1:31:43 There. Excellent protagonists for that show. And that'll wrap up my serving of birthday cake. Let's see what Uncle Jim's got. Why, thank you so much, Paul. We're going to start off with perhaps one of the greatest Star Trek films. We want to say happy birthday to Melanie Shatner. And if that name sounds familiar, it should. She's the daughter of William Shatner himself. She's a former actress who appeared as a jogger in Star Trek for the Voyage Home, but she also appeared in Star Trek five. The Final Frontier is the captain's yeo men, and happy happy birthday to Melanie Shatner. We also want to say happy birthday to Melissa George, the Australian actress who played Viena in Star Trek Discovery second season episode if memory serves, and if you guys, if you haven't seen that episode, there's an awesome, awesome flashback at the very beginning of that episode that shows Anson Mount's Captain Pike reflecting on Jeffrey Hunter's Captain Pike and gets that transition between the two to tell all those fans out there that was screaming that it's not it's not Cannon, They're different, blah blah blah, to pull your heads out of your asses. This is the same character and here's the proof. And that was the episode. But I practically I know her from the remake of Amityville Horror. She starred in the remake of
1:33:17 Amityville Horror, which is a pretty cool movie. Happy birthday to Melissa George. And we have another great one here, the awesome, the incredible Michelle Hyo Oscar winner Michelle Hyo Chinese Malaysian actors who played Philippa Giorgio in Discovery as well as the Mirror Universe version of Philip Georgio, and of course she came back to star in the spinoff movie Star Trek Section thirty one. She's awesome. That scene where she kicks Lorca in the face and he's behind her just blows my mind every time I think of it. Happy birthday, Michelle Yo. We're lucky to have her in our Star Trek family. And usually I do the Klingons.
1:34:03 I think Michelle Yo is pretty close to a Klingon. She'll kick your button take names, but I do have a couple of cool ass Klingons on my list. I will start off with Shannon cochrane. She's the actress who had a supporting role in Star Trek Nemesis as Toalara. She's one of the ones that melted in the beginning of the movie there. She also played Khalita in the TNG episode Preemptive Strike, but I am remembering her as Sorilla from Deep Space nine. You were cordially invited. We had a trivia question about her and Dex a little while ago, and she is the wife of General Martak on Star Trek Deep Space nine. Sopla to Shannon Cochrane.
1:34:52 And although most people don't know our next actor as a Klingon, I sure do. And we want to say a happy happy birthday to Bruce Horrick, the Canadian actor and artist who played Hammer in Deep Space I'm Sorry in Strange New World season one, and he reprised that role as zombie Hammer in season two, became Black as Garcog, the dancing, singing klingon in Subspace Rhapsody, and I got to say he was so much fun to talk to. If you guys missed that interview with him, please please go and check it out. You can find that over at trek talkin dot com. He was a lot of fun to talk to. He played cancer, he does gobblin Shakespeare.
1:35:39 Very informative, very fun guy, and we had a lot of fun talking with him. So happy birthday to Bruce Horrick. And that, my friends, wraps up our Star Trek birthdays for this week. And now it's time for our Star Trek News, which means I have to find there. It is. Priority one message from Starfleet coming in on secure. Channel incoming transmission enter authorization code command codes verified. Define parameters of program level nine authorization. Required, specified parameters, transfer updata is complete.
1:36:22 A blank alert, A blank alert. All right, guys, this is the part of the show where we do some Star Trek news. You can find these stories in their entirety at Truck Talking and Beyond and who has our first story tonight? Looks like Eric has our first story for tonight. All right, I believe that this is news out of visit Star Trek Las Vegas. That's my guess. Cybok teased a tas episode scrapped and more Star Trek Strange New Worlds. There were a couple of hints from the showrunners about some returning characters, without identifying which season. A Season one episode tease the appearance of Siebox Box half brother, introduced in Star Trek five the Final Frontier. So when asked by the Hollywood reporter if we will see him again, the co showrunners indicated we will, but a bit cryptically Keiva Goldsman, it's interesting you should ask, and then Alonso Henry Lonzo Meyer says, you very well may see Sybock a version of Sybock. Yes, they tease that Romulins will be back as well. Myers, you saw Romulins in season one, but you may see them again. Regarding the puppet episode, you may wonder how exactly did Pike and crew get transformed into puppets. Co show runner Akiva Goldsman explained, there might have been an unexpected and terrible transporter accident which might have had some unexpected felt like effects. Love it,
1:37:55 but we look forward to learning about it in season four. The show runners confirmed that they have already broken down the six episodes planned for season five, which should begin production by the end of this year. Kiva Goldsman has already indicated that they plan to end the series in season five by showing James T. Kirk's first day in command of the USS Enterprise, and the show already has much of Kirk's crew aboard already, especially with the addition of Scotty played by Martin Quinn in season three. There are still a few key characters missing, including doctor McCoy, Sulu, and Chekhov, who of course didn't show up until season two of the original series. Goldsman noted that he sees the start of TOS as where no man has gone before.
1:38:41 He elaborated how that impacts the way they will be introducing more members of Kirk's crewe. He says the full og cast doesn't exist at the very front of the tos era, so we are going to get as close as possible while not jumping deep into the tos era. And Meyer says, you're going to meets some of them for sure, and there's going to be some surprises. Ethan Peck confirmed that as the series moves into that final season, his performance will grow closer to that of Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock on the original series. Ah see, this is all of this relationship stuff. Now they're honing him into the emotionless character we will see later. Ethan Peck says, Yeah, I'm going to try and get more nim Oy.
1:39:25 Like. It's funny since at the very beginning, I've done my best nime Oy and the writer has a lot to do as well, because the writing makes room for emotion, and I guess they'll write it in a way that will make less room for it and it should be much more computational. The showrunners also talked to The Hollywood Reporter about an episode they aren't doing, but said they came close to making an episode in the style of Star Trek, the animated series. Goldsman says, we consider doing an all animated sort of tea version of the show, and we abandoned it. There are a series of ideas we just end up not We only have ten episodes per season, so that was one we really dug pretty deep into but ultimately abandoned. Meyers says, we love the animated series and we were looking at ways to bring it into the show, but we are not always capable of finding something to do in every format we want to do. It's more about spending a lot of time on what's an interesting format we have not seen on our show. That's what we spend our time with. Yeah, see, that's kind of interesting. We were getting that feel anyway.
1:40:36 Production on season four is complete and it's expected to arrive in twenty twenty six. Filming on season five should begin by the end of this year for a likely twenty twenty seven debut. And yeah, that's one thing I've kind of been noticing. It does feel like this season especially a little bit of a revolving door of formats, like they just sat in a room and they said, Okay, we need to do this type episode. We need to do this type so we need to do this type of episode, rather than focusing on what, for example, Paul was talking about, which was exploring right, forget about the format, just go and explore some planets. So anyway, I'm still liking it. But but it is interesting that they consciously made that decision.
1:41:17 Sounds to me like they're a little bit more concerned over style than story. Yeah, exactly, that's and that's probably you know, it's like it's like, you know, it's like we're oh, we're format, right, or just like they want to like give all these different you know, artistic disciplines a chance to you know, focus. But at the at the expense of what it's a very it sounds more like a producer than a writer's perspective, which I'm really surprised at from Henry Alonzo Myers because I expect better from them. But yeah, I just hope that they let story and character and you know, fresh ideas start to get you know, a little more prominent in the remaining episodes.
1:42:01 Again, yeah, I agreed. Butbo come on, did you did you not hear the I've been waiting since we first saw him there the image that David has up there on the screen where we see Sybox's back staring out the window, Oh my god, I've been waiting for. To me, that was the whole point of the story. Sybok will be back. How are they going to work that into the story. That's what I'm interested in seeing, because, as you all know, Star Trek five is the ultimate Star Trek movie, so we didn't know that.
1:42:42 Yeah, speaking of. What I want to see, all right, Yes, I'm excited and I'm just I can't wait for when the fans rate this episode, because for the one step didn't like the episode we reviewed tonight, I'm sure they're going to have They're going to trap the proverbial brick over this one. But Star Trek Strange New world spent more than six months turning cast into puppets for season four. With the San Diego Comic Con came news from the Trek sphere that Star Trek Strange New Worlds will be turning their main cast into puppets for a season four episode who.
1:43:34 Fans also got a first look at puppet Pike aka Andson Mounts Captain Pike in puppet form. Showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonzo Meyers shared more details. I want to say there was easily more than six months of work on it, Meyers reveals, alongside all the other prep meetings for every episode, there was always a separate puppet meeting. I would like to be in. That sounds fun. The duo began conversations or began having conversations about puppets around the making of season three, which is currently dropping weekly on Paramount Plus. I was familiar with how to do some of this stuff, Meyer said. In production, we'd have long conversations with our director in mind, specifically specifically about how to handle puppets. Yeah, we had to have a lot of conversations about making puppets. We had to have a lot of conversations about how to handle our crew because we also have to have a whole crew of puppeteers.
1:44:44 It's just like doing a very different type of episode, and it requires a lot of time and care to do it. What was it like seeing the crew and puppet form for the first time. You cannot believe the Chrissy puppet. There are no words, Goldsmith's as referring to the Christina Chong Lahn puppet. Insane is the word Shong uses to describe reading that episode for the first time. Pure joy. Jess Bush Chapel ads, it's an amazing script. Rebecca Romain number one comments, there's so many things that are hard and challenging about this. Meyer says, but then you'd go and look at the puppets and everything was okay.
1:45:30 So there you have it. I look forward to it. They're not puppets, so they're muppets. I know, I was reading Puppets and I wanted to say bumpets. Yes, yeah, let's be accurate here. But you know, I think Paul's you know, I think Paul is right. So far, though these episodes have not been a let out like Subspace Rhapsody, you know, the crossover episode with Lower Decks. They've all been good at sisodes. But you know, we need to be out in space. We need to be looking for Sidebox. You know what I'm saying. You know he's out there. He's looking for shak Kyrie.
1:46:15 Well you know what you know what Sidebox connection is with Lucille Ball, don't you. Yeah, we had uh he's married to. Yuh. We can't hear you, Jim. Your cat is blocking your microphone. We can hear. Struggle. One of those moments that maybe we were better, you know, having off their. H well, anyway, I just think it's cool that he was Sibock and being married to Lucier and as Lucy's daughter, so there's that whole connection within the connection eh my cat.
1:47:08 Yeah, we know. That they take turns the cat the Anakin and then Leya Anakin and then Leya anyways, so I guess that that's a rap. Guys, huh mm hmmm.
