Welcome to episode six hundred and thirty one of Trek Talking. Can you guys believe it? So many episodes? Wow? Incredible. I'm your most excellent host, Uncle Jim. And before we get started, I want to go around the horn and introduce my awesome trek experts. We'll start off with Eric.

1:33 Eric's out in Portland. How you doing tonight? Eric? Well, you know, Jim, the funny thing about me is that I'm great at surviving. I've been not dying my entire life and I haven't screwed it up yet. So that's a step in the right direction. Yeah. And also out in Portland we have Paul, our very own toy guy. How you doing tonight, Paul. Hello friends, I'm doing alright. It's been an interesting week. It's been a very very busy week and uh, and it's been curious curious weeks and curious curious there and curious or if it gets any more curious or I I'm not quite sure how to how to grapple, but we'll just gonna say.

2:19 My investment guy called it mister Toad's wild ride. Yeah, there's stuff going on in the geosphere, the political world and all that. That's nothing compared to what I've been going through. Man, it's just crazy, crazy times. But it's okay, It's it's all right. You know, I'm I think this week was brought to you by niche. If this week doesn't kill you, it'll make you stronger, right, I mean it's been that kind of uh this week it was brought to you by Sisyphus. It's like, you know, it's been so. What's next? Man? I'm pretty much just like every day I opened the windows and look out the front lighters. I don't know, have the gigantic, city sized flying saucers landed yet to enslave us and have a harvest goldfish or whatever our new jobs will be. I don't know, But nothing surprises me anymore. But as you can see, I'm prepared for just about any weird thing that may happen. So, you know, I think that may be the longest answer Gym's ever gotten in terms of how are you doing this week?

3:34 That's a hell of an answer. Well, let's let's stick with the Portland theme and check in with our miracle workers. David. How you doing tonight? David? And I'm pretty hard speaking of surviving though, I think he pretty much died the red shirt yesterday or something. But you know, I'm gonna have to I'm not have to start bringing my glomer to this podcast. We're talking. I'll have him right here on my shoulder. He might get kind of angry though, looking at that trouble, he might just be. Like and not. In Portland, we have our very own Charles, and we can see the palm trees waving in the back grown. How are you doing? Tonight, Charles, I'm sorry.

4:23 It's been a long busy month this past. Week, like several weeks since Monday, and then to turn around it's like, yeah, here come the heat wave. We want to go back to the sev eighties until. May, I'll send I'll send some snow your way. How's that it'll melt before it gets here, probably to come down and rain. 8:49 We are heading down Ondo to start with, and we're saying hello and thank you for listening to Shelley Bell, who's saying hello to us from Tugulawa in Queensland, a place that I would love to go. I'm not sure where an Oregon, hopefully Portland, but if not, that cool. Last time my list is Maureen Bilkki from Holland, Michigan, USA. Paul who is on your list?

12:21 Thank you, David. I appreciate that. Well. First of all, we're going to jump multiple longitudes and latitudes to some of our international fans here, and I like, first of all, oh to a place I so fondly wish to go. Is the beautiful country of Italy. A flag flying proudly from our friend Alice Confelonieri. I don't know where Alice is at. Is she Piedmont is she Tuscany, We don't know, but she's somewhere in Italy. Maybe she just considers the entire country her home, as some folks do who drink deep of Italy's pleasures. So Alice, great to hear from you, Thanks for being a fan. And then a very wonderful and historic part of the world. We have our friend Dave Mallin checking in with us from Puttily in North Wales.

13:10 Amazing country with a great, rich history and great language as well, very fascinating place to live. A very happy looking attention getting emoji that Dave is sharing with us. So great to hear from you in Puttally there, Dave, thanks for being a fan and sharing your enthusiasm for Star Trek. In the Czech Republic, we're hearing from our friends Zuzanna haskez Kolva. So great to hear from you, Susana, and I just love knowing that there's folks watching Star Trek and all kinds of different languages all over the world right and united by the enthusiasm of a hopeful vision of the future and exciting, adventurous storytelling. And this is a great message here from fan Farshid our dobb L Farshie. Farshid is originally from Iran, but he is living in Sweden since nineteen eighty eight. That's a big change, far Sheet, real challenge of acclamation to the weather there, but has lived there since nineteen eighty eight. He has watched Star Trek the original series since childhood and has continued watching every series in all the films too. Have loved, love, and always will love Star Trek once a trekye, a lifelog trekie with a photon torpedo spread of Vulcan salutes and hearts so great you'll give you exactly. I mean, we're overwhelmed with Marshid's enthusiasm. Is nothing better than a really enthusiastic Star Trek fan who's just you know, drank

14:42 deep in childhood and never stopped. I'm right there with you, far Sheet, So we are united brother in terms of that. So I just love knowing that there's just that appeal across cultures that Star Trek has is a wonderful thing. So great to know that this folks all over the planet who like a lot of the same things that we do. That's in times like this, it's really encouraging to know that there are things like that that can unite us and there's yet more fandom to be celebrated, and that celebration is going to come from Uncle Jim. Yeah, well, I thank you, Paul. And you're never going to guess what caught my attention and that last fan shout out? Could it be all those awesome emojis?

15:28 That could be impossible. It's very very possible that it could have been all those Look at those good looking dudes there, Eric, that. One in the red outfit is is that Riker exy guy. He's one of the evil Admirals, isn't he. Look now, he's gonna have to breathe eventually. Right, he's touching my bat with. Everybody wants to touch my bat with. Yeah. So, guys, we're talking about all these awesome fan photos that you're not seeing right now. And if you guys have a fan photo that you want to be featured, just send it to us on our on trek talking dot com and we will get it up here on our feed so that everybody that's watching the show we'll see your fan pictures. So please please do that. Leah, stop it, stop it, Leyah. Leah wants to play with me right now, and she's whacking my computer.

16:22 With you know what happened the last time that dog came through, We lost you know, like an hour, so. I know I'm trying to get her to go bother the cat. Go find Anakin, Go go find all right, guys. So on my fan shout out list, we'd like to say thank you to Bruce Bolan, who's listening to us in Boston, Massachusetts right now. Thank you, Bruce. We also want to say hello and thank you to Alexander Zarte, who says originally from New York currently living in San Antonio, California. We also want to say thank you to Ian Maher who's listening to us in Upstate New York. And last, but not least, on my list, I want to say hello and thank you to Roy Scott Becker who's listening to us in Durham, North Carolina. And that, my friends, wraps up our fan shout outs. Please head on over to trek Talking dot com and there you can find a link to our Facebook page, tell us where you're from, and send us your pictures. We'd love to see a picture of you up there on the screen. And that wraps up that and now it's time for Star Trek open.

17:36 You know me like no Wind, what you thought about the show? Then we try to share your opinions with all of our minions out there because they listen worldwid. So tell us just what you think. Get together we will. All Terre Canara and Romulna. All right, guys, if you head over to our Facebook page every week, I throw out all kinds of fascinating, stimulating, enticing, titulating fan questions. Sometimes I might ask one like you know which which beard of rikers did you like the best?

18:18 That's a great question. Actually we haven't asked that yet. We should ask that question, you know. Just some some fun one and sometimes. I mean there's only one right answer. But sometimes I get a little deeper, like we did last week with Captain Picard wiping out the boorg. So you never know what you're gonna find. So you want to head over there and answer our poll questions. So David roll it. Okay, let's clip it. Here's our first. Dream him. Some of tas.

19:00 Is son convicted of three But your host family will one day rule the empire. But U. But not to days. I love the face, I love the eyes. This child's family wrongly took your name and your honor from him. In return, I give his life. To you.

20:14 Yeah, all right, So Paul, I think people are not pauw Eric. I think people already know what our pole question is. But what is our pole question? And how did vote? Man? I love adding the clip to these pole questions. That's so cool. It refreshes everybody's memory. In the TNG episode Redemption, Gowran gives Warf, son of Mogue, the life of tal, son of Duras. Wharf spares it. Do you agree with his decision? And I feel like this is a sort of uniquely cultural centric question because we're asking a bunch of humans this question, right, And so ninety one percent of the humans who were responded to this poll said, yes, of course we agree with Wharf's decision, because you know, killing a child is probably not the best look. Nine percent of our responders I assumed that those were the three Klingons who answered this pole said that they did not agree with Wharf's decision. So, you know, from my perspective being a human, it's kind of hard to like fathom how killing not really a teenager a teenager will restore my family's honor, and Wharf gets a lot of crap for this decision too, But in the end, I think he feels okay with it, right, He feels like he made the right decision. And so I'm kind of

21:45 with Wharf man. I feel like, from my perspective, I agree with Whorf's decision. Had I grown up on Chronos, I might feel differently. I would like to recognize that though. All right, how about you, Paul, if you were Warf, would you have killed the little bastard? Well, here's the deal, right, and when when when Torrell first walks in there, he looks like cousin Oliver from the Brady Bunch, right, he is, so one day we rule empire. You know it's like, well maybe after puberty hits Torrel, you will, but it's you know, it's just so. But Eric makes a good point because you get the cultural lens, right, And here's the thing. Wharfs there, right, and then you know, David plays a clip right, and then one early on like we said, you're alive, you he belongs to you, right, and then like a minute later, right, there's this cutting. The cards are all serious, right, and you know Wharf's like, oh ship the card's watching me.

22:41 I can't go there. You just here, Otherwise I would slip his coastards throat. But no, but John, you know the cards there, I got it. A high minded thing, fine, right, So I mean I get where he's kind of torn, right, and so you know Western values, human human values, Yeah, you got you know. I can see where the uh uh, where the minions are, right, I get it, right, I do think though culturally, you know, I would like to offer a third alternative. Though to me, often in making a plot, the third unexpected door is the better one, right, So I would like to offer a third alternative to this, do something the toral that is worse than death. I would, you know, I'm I would. I would throw him in a in uh. I would. I would do a two part thing. I would throw him in a you know, like a big arena of targs enough to know that he would be scarred from his experience, right, he would be scarred, and then he would be banished. Right, he would be banished for the rest of his life, to have to walk elsewhere, be a klingon not welcome on Kronos. Uh, to basically be like a Ronan in exile, you know, who was you know, you know, a breaker of the vows, breaker of the faith, an apostate from the kling On empire, right,

24:12 and just a fate worse than death for you know, because it's like you know, Dura, they didn't kill Wharf, they just besmirched the memory of his father, right, So let the punishment fit the crime would be what I would say, right, do something to just ruin to Rale's right, right, so that ideally he walks the earth for like thirty years and then comes back in like a sequel movie to wreak havoc and get revenge. Right, So you want to think ahead like that, then it's a little bit better satisfying for everybody, you know, watching then and then watching in the future things. So you're setting up your sequel and you're good to go. I'll take my royalty check now, Fellas, that'd be great, all right? Well for me, I've always felt that warf On star Trek was a lens for our humanity. They used Wharf as a way to show what humans would do, which is unfortunate because Wharf is a Klingon. So you got a conflict right there. In this particular case, I think that Wharf probably should have killed her off. That's what a Klingon would have done, that's their cultural thing. He should have killed a little bastard. However, Picard was there.

25:24 It's not the Federation way. He was raised with humans, so he's not gonna kill him. So there's there's the clash of the cultures. In this particular pole question, and in this particular Pole cash, the Federation wins out and he spares him, and was that the right choice to do? Well? Son of a Duras does come back on Deep Space nine and the Sword of Kles and is a royal pain in the ass later. So had he killed him, now, maybe that wouldn't happen, But at any rate, you know, I think that he I think that for the character of Warf he made the right choice. For a Klingon, he didn't. So I'm going to answer both questions at the same time.

26:11 Yeah, I mean that was the whole point of Wharf, right, was that he had his like genetic kind of makeup, but then he had the people that he was raised with. And so he's a great allegory for anybody who's adopted or mixed race or like has you know, alternate gender identities or anything like. You could put all of this into Wharf if you wanted to, and say that Wharf was trying to keep one foot in each camp the whole time. And in this case, I do think the presence of JLP makes a big difference. Well, And and what what happens next in that clip? By the way, do you guys like the clips? David? David messaged me, he said, how about we do a clip.

26:53 The way to do it? Do you guys ask the idea. Doesn't remind you of the yes. So what happens next is his Worf's brother Kern, who's one purebred Klingon. He comes down, picks up the doc tot and he's going to kill He's gonna kill Torrel, and Warf stops him. This is no. You gave his life to me and I have chosen to spare it. So, you know, the Klingons wanted blood, you know, and Wharf didn't give to him. So and so takes the brunt of that like cultural hit, right. But because he's Wharf, and because he's so strong and rooted in his own convictions, he's able to take the heat and still keep going. That's what I don't. I mean, that's one of the great things about Worst's character.

27:38 In a lot of ways, I think Wharf is really more of a Klingon than a lot of the Klingons that we run into. I think Wharf is like the textbook version of a Klingon because he was raised amongst humans, whereas a lot of the Klingons that we bump into are just you know, crooked, backstabbing alcoholics, and they're you know, without honor. Or just emotionally unhinged. Yeah, they're just not you know, war If, I think is the ultimate kling Op. He's learned some regulation. Right. The thing is, that's the problem with most of the other Klanons, Right, It's just they're they're they're kind of childlike in their extremes, right. They have no governance in terms of how they are able to. Maybe Gran does a little bit because he's more of a game player, right, he's more of a tactical person, right, you know, sinking big picture. But but most of them just I have an impulse. I will go do it. I do not like you. I will punch you. I will you know you have a gallon of ale, I will drink it. Right, you know, but you know, they just have no there's no regulation, right, They just you.

28:43 Know, except for maybe Martak. Martalk seems to be pretty well centered. But all right, Charles, well, what do you think would you have killed him or would you have spared him? Well, I think it would have been great to get a lower decks tie in there and make him a far hand, make him a farm handed, a tard farm where they're producing the blood wine. Yeah, I know one. Farm who kind of gave up, gave up his cling on anger for the peace. I agree with the Minions on it, as you guys made a good point for phrase with as we not use the term humans as much as Terrans. He grew up with a Terran family.

29:33 He got their ideals. We don't kill everybody, and sometimes we need to spare a life and deal with the repercussions later. I agree with the minions saying I think there was the right thing, especially with also with Pricard there, Yes, but I think it's a point too that I think Key figures. Also, the blood's not worth it. The blood in his hand would not be worth what was already done to his family. There are other ways a deal, There's other ways of dealing with the Dross family.

30:15 Dirast. Yes, let's not forget the sisters. You get to bring up the caboose on his one, David, are you with dominions or against dominions? Well, apparently worth with an influencer, So technically, uh yeah, I actually agree with the minions. I do agree with Paul's statement too as well, that you know, maybe just send him off to something far worse than desk, like I don't know, the imulant orphanage or something. But yeah, uh so, yeah, I would have to say I think he did the right thing. But at the same time, it has to be a cultural thing, like you guys have always been talking about Cleon and their culture or honor and killing and everything. So if John Luke wasn't there, probably he might have done it. But at the same time, he probably wouldn't have done it if he was wasn't there.

31:10 So but I do agree with him because I'm human, I'm not clean. I mean, that's the interesting Like we can almost do an entire show about wharf because Warf shows many examples of being influenced by who's in the room throughout the series, I think, and because he's kind of always torn. He's the kind of guy who's looking outside of himself for influence, and you know, most of the time he's on the enterprise, so he's getting that influence from JLP or from you know, from the counsel or from a riker. Like yeah, I mean, he's he's got a lot of outside so he's the he's like an amalgamator. He can he brings in a bunch of information and then he's like, Nope, this is a decision I'm gonna make. But you could almost argue with him and force him to make a different decision.

31:56 It's interesting that you brought that up, actually, because I was just thinking, they've done it half Vulcan. They've done a half cleanon they've done almost every race half. But this is more than a half of culture. Like he's half Cleanon culture and half Federation culture. So I mean, he's just like he's struggling with those two. Look at if you guys, look at if you guys are looking good. Good. Look at the video where he had the back injury and he was sitting there and wanting to kill himself and then got convinced to. Not give up. Hmm. Well, you know if You guys are are having fun with this question. Next week's pole question is just the opposite, So you'll have to tune in next week to find out about that one. All right, David, why don't you roll the next one for our for everybody, Eric's clipping.

32:54 Captain Bettilla's in need of immediate sedation. Yah, welcome you to. Stay this feel sick. There's one I would stop it. I need to take you. I'm not giving up on I have no intention of doing that. You've trure to have been deemed up by the going all right, so, uh, you've seen the clips, so I guess you know what The question is just a little reminder because we're anxiously awaiting Strange New world See three, which is going to pick up right here. So Eric, what is the poll question? And what did our minions have to say.

34:07 On the second season finale of Strange New Worlds? Captain Bettel was infected with gorn eggs? You do you think she will survive? And you guys, this is split straight down the middle. Fifty percent of our responders said yes, she will survive and fifty percent of our responders said nope, she'd done for that's a good pole question. Yeah, there's not enough evidence to like really know either way. So uh, I like to think that they would save her. But also, we live in twenty first century television land and Game of Thrones and whatnot, and so if they killed her off, I wouldn't be surprised, not one bit.

34:59 How about you, what do you think? Is she going to survive or is she going to bite the dust? Well, it's hard to say, it really is. It's it's a tough one. I mean, it's certainly not a question about Betel. It's really a question about Pike. Right, Well, she doesn't have plot armor like all the other characters do. I don't know that it's a plot armor thing. Well, I know what you're saying, but it's just because it's kind of a different universe th things happen a little differently. So I mean that's you know, and everyone can always somehow come back from from something. I'm just killing time while I check out her IMDb profile to see how much work she's got lined up as a clue to see if she's Yeah, I see that's just passed in the lead of an upcoming HBO show. Now I'm just making it. But she gets a lot of work Melanie does, and Melan we're talking about the actress Melanie Graffano. Please don't mispronounce the Italian names, thank you, just like to make sure that we cover that. But yeah, tough. I think that probably my guess is that she I mean, just in terms of it, it looks pretty serious, right, and uh it's great that uh uh Chapel's in there trying to do her thing right, doing everything she can.

36:23 But you know they because who is with her right now that's captured, right, it's Ma Benga and who else? George Kirk? Yeah right, So I mean we know Mabega's going to be fine. We know George Kirk's going to be fine. Right, there's something that but you can't have all of them be fine, right, that's just kind of annoying, Like all the people her hostages are all fine. Right, It's just like, no, somebody's going to draw the short straw otherwise it doesn't this no. Half, I mean, it's rights. I just don't I don't see that they that they pull that off or you know, more likely what I would see them do is probably like it sort of seems like maybe she's okay and You're like, Oh, she's gonna be all right, good deal, Right, But then she's in a situation where the only way to save the enterprise is to like, you know, blow up the ship.

37:10 He's on, right, and she dies heroically and tragically. You know, well, I love that. That's more like the kind of thing that we typically see, right is and so he Pike is kind of you know, he that's on in keeping with his character, right, love of his life, and we've seen over several seasons dies tragically. I question, it's not right? Yeah, yeah, so that's if I had to put money on it, That's what I'm guessing, right, it'll be something like that. I don't see her coming out of this though, So I'm I'm on the sadly because she's done a great job and it really is really but how also, guys, three seasons in, right, how long can you sustain the captain of a starship having a steady girlfriend the whole time?

37:53 Right? At some point I just don't, Yeah, why load it? But you know, eventually, eventually, you know, you gotta you know, somebody's got to pay. And it's not gonna be one of her record characters, you know, I kind of wish it was Pellia. Did I say that out loud? God? All right? But uh, you know, critique of the writing, not the actor. So but yeah, I don't think she's coming out of this one pros. I don't. We'll see. I'm excited to find out, though, I mean, you know, I mean it's a you know, I dig closing the season on a cliffhanger, always like that. It's a fun move. So we'll see a couple of months. Well, for me, I hope she bites the dust because if she doesn't, then that means they killed off hem Or for nothing, and that one really ticked me off if they pulled out some miracle cure to save her.

38:45 But they let Himmer die because Hemmer was my favorite character, and they often with the gore and eggs. So she's got to bite the dust. She has to plain and simple. So I like seeing her. And not only that, she lost her ship, She lost her crew. Captain should be going down with the ship, and then the ship went down, So you know, I think she's toast. How about you, Charles, Well. Jim took a little bit in my Thunder when I'm gonna say it's like, oh, but with Star Trek lose any of their major characters. Oh, that's right. They killed off Hammer. So it's hard to say I'd be on the fence for that one.

39:28 But I'm. Would not be surprised if she doesn't make it. Now, maybe she does do a sacrifice, Maybe she's contaminated, but she sacrificed herself to help the ship get away or get somebody saved. Yeah, that might be a good good help the ship. But yeah, I'm not positive she's gonna make it. All right, David, you get the caboose on this one yet again? Should she day or should she go? Now? Well, I think we should open up a bedding pool. So you're going to say the Paul answer of the third option, like she dies but then comes back, but it dies again but is defied.

40:14 Actually, the Gorn make her into a queen, right, That's what I'm saying, Queen of the Gorn. Right, and she becomes she becomes Pike's nemesis for like the rest of the season. Right, you know, she hangs out with torol Man. That's got some that's got some juice. Okay, Well, I. Actually think she will bite the dush and I think this is going to be the beginning of why they call the Red Shirt the Bad Luck Crew. So what's the how many Red Shirts die in this episode? But yeah, I think she's going to bite the dush. Well, there you have it, guys, and that wraps up our Star Trek polls. I like the videos. I think we'll stick with that. I think David came up with a good idea. He's the Miracle Worker, and I like that because it refreshes everybody to what we're talking about.

40:58 So we're all in the same page, all right. Well, that brings us to the meat and potatoes of tonight's podcast. It is Comic Corner, and we are going to be talking about Lower Decks. We're going to be talking right now about issue number two, and as usual, we're going to have Paul give us the recap. Make sure I'm off mute. Thanks, Okay, Lower Decks Issue too. From our good pals at IDW continuing to rock hard on Star Trek. So this is kind of a chapter two from last week. We kind of come back in there. Basically, we had all the situation we're in before and this one is this is that issue three that we're looking at images for.

41:45 Though no that's issue. No, no, no, that's first first page. It is okay, oh that's right. Sorry, my bad. A lot of repetition on this comics. So we start off marinerd to Lynn, Rutherford, Tendy and Boieler. Okay, off the Bonaventure on to a strange planet, right, and that strange planet. Uh, fans of the original series will soon recognized it is Scotti be a click click right, which is a classic episode the Savage Curtain right on there, and uh it's the crazy uh just my body temperature displease you. You know those crazy hot lava cats, right, the ones who really walked right up to the freaking camp door where it could have been just so awful but somehow made it cool where they ended up having you know, Kirk and Spock, you know, team up with Abraham Lincoln and and you know, uh so rac right to fight the legendary evil uh worst worst of the galaxy, right, especially my favorite Colonel Green. You gotta love Colonel Green. It was like, why have we never had a Colonel Green time traveling movie? He was such a badass. Oh that's right, because he's in Congress currently. Sorry, sort of seems like he should be right with his whole And sorry I have to say this because it's really I'm that guy.

43:03 I'm so annoying. I will do these digressions given any opportunity, So just throw me out the airlock. But did you know fans of the Savage Curtain of which we're kind of talking, so I have an excuse, right, the uniform that Colonel greenwars, that red uniform, it ended up becoming Morc's spacesuit on it is the exact same. It is precisely the same, pulled out of like paramount storage. Anyhow, it's the same thing, right. The Excalbians want to staye a spectacle to learn which of your values is this right? So they match up Ruther for tend Ee tole in all them with a bunch of legendary characters jed Zeia Dax, Scottie Janeway, jlp as here is being referred to this week, right and Paul right. And the idea is they want to find out how mentoring works this time instead of you know, which is better good versus evils? Right, except that they wanted to be exciting like WWE wrestling, right, So they wanted the mentors to convince the mentees to kill everyone, right, because the Excalbians must have spectacles, right, And so it goes on for a bit of each of the mentors trying to convince the mentees to do that, and the mentees resisting because they're enlightened, peaceful and natives of the Critos, and eventually the you know, Boimler makes an impassioned speech to try to like, you know, make everyone realize that we don't need to kill everyone, because

44:35 I'm making a big, dramatic, impassioned speech like I've always wanted to. And the Excalbians say, wow, you know, your speeches are really boring, and that we find that the violence of the mentors get better ratings, right, and so they basically send them packing right to the Bonaventure. And on the Bonaventure and the Critos and all of their crews, everyone's okay, very long technical explanation about what happened, YadA, YadA, YadA, and and everyone on Excalby is watching the mentors fight violently scene. So that's what we have issue number two. All right, So what did you think about about it's Paul?

45:17 What do you think about the art, the story? The oh? I I mostly liked it it's it's hard to critique the art just because it's basically, you know, it is exactly precisely, you know, like the show is right. So it's not like they're doing anything really differently. What's different is the way they rendered the Excalbion, which is interesting. They put more of a mouth on him than on the original show to I think, give him more personality. And I like the fact that it referenced, you know, kind of a what just some folks would say is a really daffy old episode, but I'm very it's one of those older episodes I'm very fond of, right. I mean, it's really it's really fun and interesting with those bad guys you know, out on this planet. It's kind of like, you know, a pulpier version of a right, And you got to love the Excalbion. He's just really cool, nasty alien, very fun.

46:06 So I like that. I like that they chose to do that. It's kind of strung into the middle of a longer, more complicated plot that seems to involve a lot of confusion over multiple the touch line through here. What we saw on issue one as well is references to the career of James T. Kirk right, so they seem to keep bumping along in their adventures, sort of buffting around timelines. That's a very weird rendering of Scotty in that image. By the way, he looks very hot. James Kirk is going to somehow play a part in this, but we don't know to what degree yet because we've seen his log recording from the animated series. In the previous comic right now, we're seeing other things that Kirk was involved in and his adventures with, like Excalbia and whatnot. So that's going to be the woven in through all these issues, but we don't really know how yet. So of these two issues were doing tonight, this was the one I liked the best. I enjoyed this. I thought it was fun.

47:06 The whole mentoring thing is a little you know, I don't know if that's the you know, I don't know, but overwhelming. I thought it was very good. So out of a scale of one to ten, I would happily get it an eight because I think it was generally very successful and enjoyable. So for me, an eight powered by all that good old school tos love, but eight. From ball excellent. Well I'll jump in here and say that for me, I found the I know last week we talked a little bit about it, but I found the what do you call it, the liner notes on the bottom of the page, like more enjoyable than the actual comic book itself. I love the liner notes that they put on there, and the comments they were making and how come everything always takes exactly the amount of time as a commercial, I mean, stuff like that, and I enjoyed that. I hope that the Lower Decks comic books doesn't keep hanging on toos episodes like this. They did tas last time. Now they're on another one. You know, I want to see them do their own thing and stop relying on on nostalgia, so you know. But having said that, I did enjoy this one. I thought the artwork is like Paul said, it's phenomenal. It looks like you're watching a comic book of the show. I mean, they copied the animation of Lower Decks to a t.

48:35 So if you're a fan of Lower Decks, I can't see why you wouldn't love these comic books because it does feel like you're reading an episode. The writing is perfect, the characters are great, they look look at this. I mean, look at it. They look just like they came off the show outstanding, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought they did a great job and I liked it. So, you know, Paul, I'm going to go with just because I know Paul loves it, I'm gonna go with an eight point three. You know Paul loves the death meals, so we're gonna we'll go with an eight point three. So how about you, Charles? Okay, exactly rete this picture right here or sums up.

49:19 But the first thing I was going to talk about. I love how they debate, well, what Shack's gonna do? Shack is the only one on board ship, what's he gonna do? And it's interesting where they he actually was going to do what they thought thought he was going to do, which I think well defines Ransom. Okay, Ransom, So how Ransom would act? How would Ransom do what he does? And that they actually predicted him very well, which I did like. I also liked the picture towards the end where Mariner is sitting there saying, well, oh I've done done something life changing, and it really was interesting to what happened, and the doctor's there.

50:14 Like what. Go put in the log. Quit talking, go put in the log, which sounds exactly like how the doctor would act. And I really do like what they did with the last. Page where I don't tease anybody, but somebody, somebody in that group finds out about the event that's being broadcast and. Spoiler alert, yeah, spoiler learning the screen. But yeah, somebody finds out about it.

50:55 Somebody finds out about it. It's like, yeah, don't bother me. I want to go watch I'm liking this, let me go watch it. It's like, okay, yeah. I also want to say I think it's interesting that the week we chose to do this, one of the actors has a remembrance birthday today This week I thought was perfect. Eric Will mentioned that later, but I thought it was perfect that we did this episode this week and what birthday shows up? Oh what would I give this one? I'll go with an eight point eight.

51:37 I do like what they're doing. I like what they're doing with this series. Paul loves those decimals. They make him so happy. All right, David, you want to jump in here next? So yeah, I. Remember reading this a couple of nights ago, and I completely forgot about it, but now looking at these videos actually do help. I'm starting to remember a lot more that came through. And yeah, I really like how they copied and paste a lot of what the actors or the characters would have done in the show versus the comic book. And I agree with the all that they did a phenomenal job of keeping with their characters and so, and like half few of you mentioned already, this would probably the better one out of the other one that we're going to talk about. We'll probably show you what we mean in the next segment, but other than that, Yeah, that's a particular one I enjoyed mainly because I thought it was interesting that they brought together the different characters from the other series. And I thought it at first, I thought it was like a time travel because when I was putting the slide together, I didn't actually read it before I posted it. But the third one I read it and then I posted the third, so that one's more of a chronological order. But this one in particular,

53:09 I wasn't really picking and choosing which slide to put through. But yeah, I actually thought of the time travel. But then the rock came alive and I was like okay, and I had to get help, and I believe it was Jim who told me that it was from a Teo West episode of the e Xalaban or something like that, and I was like, oh, yeah, I remember that now. So there was just a few bits in here that got me confused with the particular comic books. But I'm not much of a comic book rooder myself, but I'm getting into it now since we're doing the comic corners. But other than that, yeah, I like it, and I'm gonna have to go a little bit lower. It was the score here, but I would do a decimal that's for everybody else's shake. I'm gonna go with a seven point nine.

53:57 All right, We got three decimals and you know what that means. Eric brings up the kaboos. Yeah. I think on these lower decks comics, my personal rating on them is not measured on the sort of meaningfulness of the story, which is unlike you know, Star Trek Defiant or the main Star Trek title that's ongoing from IDW. But this one I tend to measure on how many times I laugh out loud when I'm reading it, and it's no secret. I've said it many times that I think Ryan North is a fantastic writer and he makes me giggle just about every single time I read him, whether it's Squirrel Girl or Fantastic Four, like any of the other things that he's contributed to in the past.

54:42 And so I really dug this comic, man. I think the footnotes were hilarious. There's the one that I just want to read out loud, and I know this is a little bit of a spoiler, but it just was so fucking funny to me. It says, if you're opening note star it really should invest less in revamping uniforms and computer systems every few years and more in monitoring legacy technology in case that's the exact circumstance that happens again. But let's recriminate each other later. We're just happy to be here. What Lower Decks does in the animated show is it takes all of these like Star Trek tropes and it makes fun of them, and the comic is doing exactly the same thing. It's just like making fun of all the things along the way. And you know the fact that we've got Bonaventurians here who are in different uniforms. That makes that footnote I think, hit even a little bit harder. It also references back to the animated show itself. There's that whole comment about, well, you know, we've sort of learned how to separate two beings from one another, you know, a La Tuvis, despite the fact that that Mariner says something to Jane Wayne this one about yeah, that's the guy you straight up murdered. So I don't know. This issue made me laugh a ton as I was reading it. I do think the art's good.

56:07 It's a little flat to me, Like I tend to like Jack Lawrence's, which is the next issue we're going to talk about art, just a little bit better. It has heavier ink lines around some of the art, which to me like just brings a little bit more depth, not like, you know, story depth, but just like artistic depth to the characters. I'm not saying Derek Charms not totally nailing it too, because his visages are very accurate and that sort of stuff. But I just like Jack Lawrence's style a little bit better myself, probably because he's you know, a long lost cousin of mine. I think I do like the introduction of bringing all these old mentors into this and making them kind of go crazy.

56:50 You know. I think Mariner mentioned something about it being like a Holo Deck, you know, she's like, why can't you just make this more than just a bad Holodeck episode or something. But oh, and also I loved Boiler's kind of like, you know speech that he gave. There's that one image somewhere in here where he's like he's got his fist up and he's sort of telling a story about what's going on. Uh. And then I guess lastly, what I'll say is I think one of the things that Ryan North writes, or one of the characters that Ryan North writes the best in these comics is one of I think all of our favorite characters to Lynn, like he is just completely nailing. Yeah, that's the image.

57:35 He is just. Completely nailing to Lynn for me in this issue, Like, oh, there's the one part the very beginning where they're talking about like what they think the ex Caliban is gonna say, and like to Lynn's internal dialogue is I fucking nailed it? You know, Like I love that she's a Vulcan, but she has that kind of like internal dialogue that we get to see in things like the comics. So yeah, I really liked this issue. I definitely think this is way better than the next issue we're going to talk about, but we'll we'll talk about details on the next one.

58:18 So I I totally dug this issue. I think the writing was great. I thought the art was very passable and very good. So I'll give this one an eight point five. Look at that four Deac mold. Wow. All right, David, you want to roll the next one and we'll have Paul do the intro. Paul, we have lost your audio, buddy. I'm not sure what's going on. You do not appear to be. We got. You don't want to hear me, you know, either swearing or parting or whatever I'm doing. Right, I didn't know exactly what you were saying, but I it was awesome.

59:03 It is bitter, so bitter, Oh my god. Yeah. So we are at issue three, as we had to set up here, and basically in this situation, the Cerritos is embarked on good old second contact as we seem to have happening a lot here. This one is a lot more focused on Carol Freeman to start off with, right, and they're having second contact with this kind of old school sci fi civilization, the Clerew, right, and the joke is that it's ah, you know, how did they describe it? Everyone has their perfect role in society. But the society has developed precisely as ancient Earth's early science fiction authors represented.

59:47 So there's a lot of big, clunky robots and streamlined you know, monoails and whatnot like that, right, but they're basically you know. And then also everyone's so enlightened. It's a planet of guidance counselors, right, is the joke, right, But as they're leaving at the end of their mission, the aliens the Klrew, and I thought that must be like an anagram or something. I was beating that thing backwards, trying to figure out what is that? Is there a joke in the clue? C A L A R E W. I was trying to figure out I could, I couldn't. Figure it out. So I don't know. It's just a very odd name. And when something stands out like that, I'm like, there must be something going on there, but I didn't find it. So anyhow, as a parting gift to the crew of the Cerritos, they give Carol Freeman the gift of a career and personality guidance reports prepared by their personality analysts, which is very odd, right. And so basically the idea is everyone has a report that talks about like what they would be most based on their personas, what job they would be most suited for.

1:00:46 Right. So that's that everybody gets one of those. And so there's like a little aside of everybody, uh, you know, kind of navel gazing about their personality reports. Right. And the funny part is when they're in the cafeteria or the mess hall, they're eating what sort of looks a lot like McDonald's, right, except there's like a red you know, French fries with the delta shield thing on it if you can see that. So I thought that was pretty funny. I don't know if we've seen that before, but that would be what they replicate. Was kind of funny to me. So they're all talking about these personality reports, and and Rutherford takes center stage, right of course, because he does that, right, and a lot of self conscious Oh, I should be better because I have an implant and I'm you know, almost half cybernetic, and how I should be doing better? And he's just is never good enough, right, and and Tendee's very supportive of him no matter what. No, you're fine, You're doing a great job. And then the mission at large seems to be there trying to figure out how this missing star system okay, and then there's this great, big round abyss, right, a kin to almost like a black hole, right, and then more stars start disappearing as well, and then to Lynn comes up and does this really incredibly dry PowerPoint presentation that's really what it is, right, And it's basically, this huge abyss is a bubble of what she describes as like nucleated meta stability, right.

1:02:16 And then as they're approaching it in this soritos all of a sudden way out of character, to Lynn takes charge, abruptly leaps over to the helm, you know, as opposed to giving the captain a chance to give an order, right, and just takes control and gets them out of there, because she said there was no time to go by normal procedures, right. And apparently it's kind of like what we see in every season of Discovery, right, this massive you know, existential threat that's going to destroy the entire universe, right, because you can't just have a modest, you know, simple problem has to be like, you know, universe rendic. It's what she just decribes us, like some area of vacuum collapse, right, that's eventually going to destroy the universe. And so they get the idea, after doing all this talking and testing and just an insane amount of techno battle that will make your guacamole drip out of your ears, I mean, just just annoying to the extreme, they get the idea to use, rather than blow up the warp core of their own ship to try to slow the Bubbles expansion, they show out, shove out all the shuttle crafts and use their little warp corps to try to slow the bubbles expansion. And they do, you know, a little bit, you know, a small amount, right, But then some kind of unknown energy emerges from the Bubble Universe, we don't know what yet, and it ends with a to be continued as the panels gradually get darker and darker, appearing

1:03:48 that the Thridos has gotten the Bubble Universe's expansion. And I just thought this comic, this issue was just like watching paint dry. I thought it was incredibly tedious, and you know. I mean, we joke about all different parts of the Star Trek universe being full of techno babble, but this was just almost nothing. But and it wasn't even funny, right, it was just like technobabble on top of techno battle is boring. It was tedious. I didn't get much out of it at all. You know, there's really no funny memorable moments for me at all. It's like, okay, done, move on to the next issue and hope it's better. But it had nothing really that seemed to serve as connective tissue for me to issue too, which was much better. Right, There was no I didn't feel like the plot was advancing at all. I felt it. We were just like, you know, it just felt like wow, you know, Salisbury Steak again, right, yeah, you're giving me again. We just had this like earlier in the week.

1:04:50 What it's like. No, it's just yeah, not a good effort for me. So I'll give it a three because it just wasn't very good. And if you liked it, that's great. I'm awesome. If you can you're able to take an enjoyment from that, I am more power to you, you know, I'm just not. I thought it was just like, you know, I grade content from any franchise based on other content said franchise has produced, and they've done much better, and this was really mediocre. So it gets a three and let's move on. All right, A three from Paul and moving on. Well, you know, yeah, this one was not as good as the first one. I agree, the issue too, was much much better. This one didn't feel like a as much as an episode of the show as the first issue did.

1:05:41 This one just felt to me to be slow and sloggy, And yeah it didn't. It didn't have the punch or the bite or the humor of the first issue and didn't really feel like lower decks to me. So I'm with Paul. But as usual, well I gotta I gotta go with a four point three, you know, I gotta throw in that decimo because. Paul loves those. Yeah, and also to guys, and see if you had the same reaction Jim, right. I mean, you know, Rutherford's a likable character typically, right, you know, he's he's he's he's genuine, he's he's self effacing, you know, he's he means well, he's pleasant, right, But here that he's just drawn to be so one note and he's very annoying. He's just he's just you know it, just yeah, tedious, and it's just it's just the whole I'm like, reading it again, I'm like, oh, so repetitive, you know, and just like panel after panel of him like oh you could be better, and I'm like, yeah, so I'm sorry.

1:06:42 Yeah, it didn't feel like an episode like the first issue did so. But I mean the artwork I thought was fine, you know, I thought the layout was fine. I just thought the story was just not engaging at all. So that's what What about you, Charles, what'd you think? Okay, kind of pulling my issue in looking at it well brought up one of the things that I thought about too, with like why does their meal in the lounge look like McDonald's. But interesting, it's like that's exactly what it looked like. And talking about their careers now they said everybody said, oh, there's nothing real memorable in this one. There was one, and Eric who disappeared would probably agree with me. I like the one scene that in the side notes let me even click on the side notes, which I love what they sell here.

1:07:49 A vulcan raises. One eyes eyebrow is if not routine, then at least precedent, but a vulcan putting both eyebrow into full raised red alert status. That, my friend, is when you know something has gone very very wrong. And I love where it's like, okay, both eyebrowes go straight up. It's like, okay, you know something's wrong. And to Lynn. Comes across the bridge over one panel, right into the navigation and starts putting commands in, pushing Boemler out of the way, And I love how the Bruce cruise kind of fighting over what she's doing and not realizing I was singing surpriseddn't they fight her. It's like, okay, she's a vulcan. I think she might have any clue what's going on. And when Carol Freedman kind of goes like, well, what are you doing? She says up to Carle Friedman, it's like, oh, I'll be back. And I love that look because then you look in it's like, oh, she's starting instellar cartohotography, and it's like, okay, she knows about some of this stuff. It's nice to actually see a captain who's like, okay, I've been there. I want to

1:09:19 put some input because I understand what's going on. I've researched this topic. I know what's going on. To Lynn's to Glynn's examination. Yes, was very dry and I'm very confused. They put the little video up explaining the dummies guide to this material, and that got me even MOREKT music I love Killed. Yeah, I think I should have looked at this video before we ran it. And the rescue's like, ooh, this is good. It's like, Okay, we could tell some of the level of intellect to some of the crew with times, but I definitely to be continued what's going on as these stories are gone, So I think the next one's going to be a little better. I do agree this one wasn't as good as the last one, but because of some of a couple of interactions with the crew, I'll give it a seven.

1:10:30 All right, What about you, David, Yeah, this one. Didn't really fit the vibe as I was saying the last time with the other comic. The art style just threw me off. Continuity for me just kind of like took me out of the element of actual lower decks. They didn't look at all to me like themselves as they were being drawn. As you can see, Boimler just kind of looked a little goofy almost in my opinion. But I mean it's just for some reason, it just seemed a little it just took me out of the element.

1:11:10 I didn't like the story plot too bad, too much, because I mean, like you guys said, it has it had been done before, and New Trek would be really cool to see even in a comic book. But uh, yeah, I mean it had some surprising elements. It had some funny parts. I did like what child were talking about, like the whole you know, interaction video with that cowboy something or other. But yeah, just kind of like thrown out to the old western type vibe that Posh had. So, I mean it was kind of an interesting comic, but I don't know canon it almost felt like they were from a different alternate universe to me. It didn't feel like the actual comics that we've seen in the previous one.

1:12:04 But we have to see what to be continued about part four, I'm a summing show. Yeah, I don't know. I'm gonna have to give this one probably a two. I didn't really like it all that much. All right, We got a two from David, and that brings us back to Eric. You got the caboose this time, buddy. Yeah, I am pretty much in line with you guys. There's this universe ending component to this one which actually feels a lot like the We haven't talked about these yet, but the ongoing Star Trek title right now kind of has this same theme going on, and I am not loving it as opposed to the Defiant title, which I think is totally nailing it. So the the premise of the entire comic is not really that interesting to me. Yeah, to back up a little bit, I guess on that very first page there's always the kind of Badgie recap of you know what's going on? And number one, in the past, I've already complained about the two point font or whatever, which is almost impossible to read by anybody who's over forty five years old. So, you like, the graphic design looks great, but it needs to be you know, when a leven buy seventeen comic to be able to read it without at least number three readers going on.

1:13:33 And in this particular case, Badgie is particularly brutal and biting, and I I mean, I've never loved Badgie as a character, and this to me brings out all of his worst qualities where he's just kind of like mean and brutal and not very Star Treking at all. So I don't love Badgie, and having him introduce each one of these comics is kind of like a it's Badgie again, Okay, here we go. The footnotes, which are one of my favorite parts of Ryan North's writing, did not hit in this one. There was one that I thought was particularly good, but that's because it contained an extremely bad pun that made me laugh out loud. It's the one where they're talking about that they have to like confirm the existence of this thing before they go there, and they say, confirming the existence of a system in your navigational database before you travel to it is just good praxis. So to me that was a fantastic like Star Trek six reference, and I did laugh at that one. I laughed at zero percent of the other ones that were in that were in the issue, So yeah, I don't know, man.

1:14:53 There was like a fun concept of the whatever it was, the Star Trek Starfleet rhetoric something or other or the Starfy core of rhetoric engineers, which I thought was kind of a fun idea. It's like the spin Doctors of star Fleet, but the story wasn't that great and the character writing wasn't that. It kind of felt like they phoned it in. Like in general, it felt like they needed to produce an issue and they were just like, Oh, let's get this stuff into the issue and just get it out. And I didn't like that. I recognize, and I'm going to back up what I said in the first issue. I recognized that the style of the art is a little bit different and that the characters have slightly different proportions. A lot of them have a lot narrower proportions than we see in the show, and that kind of stuff. As a frequent reader of myriad comics throughout various publishers, stylistic choices don't really bug me that much.

1:15:55 It's like, how are the panels laid out? How is the perspective look? How do the character is actually? Like? Can you tell which character is which? Like in the last issue, Scotty didn't look like Scotty at all to me, So I I that bugged me. In this issue, I can tell who all the characters are. I like all of the characters so while they look a little bit different from the show, it doesn't really bother me that much. So, yeah, this issue was pretty lukewarm to me. I didn't think it was like awful awful awful, but it definitely did not hit like the last one did. And I'm a little bit concerned as we go for I mean, we're going to talk about future issues here, but like, I'm a little bit concerned of where the comic's going right now.

1:16:41 So I will say I think I can solidly give this one. I'm going to give it a four. I think it deserves a four. It certainly does not deserve any better. And I think that's mostly on the strength of the art that I personally like and a couple of good jokes here and there, But the story in general is garbage as far as I'm concerned. So there you go, four four, all right, Charles. So overall, what do we have our final scores for both of issue number two and issue number three from from the Truck Spurts.

1:17:26 Well, you can definitely see an opinion on this one. Issue two, we gave it an eight point three. Issue three, we gave it a four point oh six. Wow, that's that's low. How low can you go? Pretty low? That's pretty low, all right, guys. So that wraps up our Star Trek lower decks comic corner of issue number two and issue number three, and that brings us up to stop our Trek birthdays. That was not al song, all right, guys. This is the part of the show where we do our Star Trek birthdays, and we always start off our Star Trek Birthdays are remembering those members of our Star Trek family who, sadly enough, are no longer with us, and for.

1:18:35 That we turned to Eric, Yeah, Jim. This week we start out with someone who Charles was mentioning earlier. We have Lee Berger, who was the actor who played the ex Caliban's recreation of Abraham Lincoln in the TS third season episode The Savage Curtain that ties directly into issue number two that we were just talking about. Lee Berger was a World War II veteran in charge of entertainment services for soldiers serving in North Africa during World War II, a very important theater. So it's kind of cool that he had that sort of influence not only over the war, but over the morale of the soldiers that were positioned there.

1:19:17 He's perhaps best known for his portrayal of Joseph Arlington Ainders on the television series Dynasty, which of course is a nighttime soap opera, so to speak, from nineteen eighty one through nineteen eighty three. He also briefly appeared on another nighttime soap opera, Falcon Crest in nineteen eighty one, as Justin Nash, but generally speaking, appeared in more than two hundred television shows, including such shows as The Munsters, The Adams Family, The Man from Uncle Mannix, Mission Impossible You Name It. From that era, he was probably on the show so Lee Berger was born April tenth, nineteen twenty four, and we lost him back in two thousand and seven at the age of eighty two years old.

1:19:58 Happy birthday to Lee Bearshaer, Happy Birthday as well to Ted Gering. He played the role of a policeman in the TOS second season episode Assignment Earth. Interestingly enough, Garng also played a New York police sergeant in Willie Dynamite in nineteen seventy four, and also played a Los Angeles police detective in Out of Bounds from nineteen eighty six. Later had a reoccurring role on the show Alice, which we have all seen at one time or another. Ted Gering born in April sixth, nineteen twenty nine. We lost him back in the year two thousand and seventy one years old. Happy Birthday, ten. Happy Birthday as well to Anthony Caruso, the actor who portrayed Bea Okmonics from the TOS second season episode A Piece of the Action. For more than three decades, Hollywood defaulted to a small core of group actors when it came to casting convincing mobsters, gamblers and racketeers. And Russo provided a reliable source of menace and was amply utilized in films and in countless television episodes beginning in nineteen forty one. I mean, look at it, it looks like a gangster right. In nineteen thirty four, Anthony decided to forego a career as an opera singer and instead took up acting with a stock company in Long Beach, California. He appeared in numerous feature films, most notably the nineteen forty crime drama Johnny Apollo and

1:21:30 the nineteen fifty film noir The Asphalt Jungle, But honestly, to get through his list of credentials on IMDb takes a solid seven to eight spins of the mouse wheel. In stark contrast to his screen image, Caruso was the consummate family man in private life, happily married for sixty three years, and enjoyed the simple pleasures of gardening and cooking. So I love that about him. He played such a different character from who he was in real life. Anthony Caruso born April seventh, nineteen sixteen lost back in two thousand and three at the age of eighty six years old. Happy Birthday, Anthony, Happy Birthday. As well to Stanley Adams, the actor and writer of stage and screen. In nineteen sixty seven, he played Sereno Jones in the TOS second season episode The Trouble with Tribles. He also co wrote the third season episode The Mark of Gideon, and went on to contribute his voice to Star Trek the animated series first season episode More Tribles, More Troubles, reprising the role of course of Sereno Jones. He was born in New York City and made appearances in several films during the nineteen thirties thirties, but continued to work primarily in theater along the Way, not in television. During World War Two, he served as a staff sergeant in the US Army Corps of Engineers, and his acting career resumed afterward when he recreated his stage role of the bartender in the nineteen fifty one film version of Death of a Salesman

1:23:02 that he decided to pursue a consistent career in that medium of theater. One major film credit includes Alfred Hitchcock's North By Northwest from nineteen fifty nine. He was also in Blake Edward's Breakfast at Tiffany's from nineteen sixty one, and he was in the nineteen sixty three drama Lily's of the Field. He worked through the seventies and unfortunately eventually suffered a back injury that kind of cut short his acting career. But Stanley Adams, what a great face, what a great voice, great personality. He was really enjoyed in all the things he was in. Born in April seventh, nineteen fifteen, lost back in nineteen seventy seven at the young age of sixty two years old. Happy Birthdays, Stanley Adams.

1:23:51 Happy birthday as well to Arthur Batanatis, who played Lieutenant de Motto in the original series third season episode That Which Survives. Botanatas got into acting after performing stand up routines in front of fellow gis in Europe during World War Two. He was a stocky general purpose actor, a prolific face on the small screen during the nineteen sixties and nineteen seventies, having made numerous other television appearances like Happy Days, The Odd Couple, The Wild Wild West, and The Outer Limits, but he kind of had a thing for epics. One of Botanatas's early motion picture appearances was in the nineteen fifty six biblical epic The Ten Commandments, and in nineteen sixty he also appeared in Spartacus and if you haven't seen either one of those films, you should go check them out. Other notable appearances include as a henchman in the Twilight Zone from nineteen fifty nine.

1:24:54 He was in Twilight Zone The Mirror in nineteen sixty one, the Mongol leader Batu in The Time Tunnel from nineteen sixty six. So Arthur Batanatis Happy birthday April ninth, nineteen twenty three was when he was born. We lost him back in two thousand at the age of seventy six years old and last, but not least, on my list. Tonight we say happy birthday to Frank John Gorshan Junior. You recognize that face. He was an impressionist comedian and actor who played Commissioner Bel in the TOS third season episode Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. But I originally, of course know him for his portrayal as the Riddler in the nineteen sixties television series Batman, for which he received his first Emmy nomination, the only Emmy nomination for the entire series, and he's the guy who got it.

1:25:53 After serving in the army during the Korean War, Gorshon had a role in the nineteen fifty seventh film The True Story of Jesse James, which of course also starred Jeffrey Hunter and Frank Overton. A couple of uncredited uncredited movie appearances along the way, and in nineteen sixty five, Gorshon had a supporting role in the popular Disney film That Darn Cat. In nineteen seventy nine, Gorshon appeared in a two part episode of the cult science fiction series Buck Rogers in the twenty fifth Century, and in two thousand and three he reunited with most of that surviving Batman cast, including TV Catwoman Julie Numar and movie Catwoman Lee Merriweather in the TV special Return to the bat Cave The Misadventures of Adam and Bert. But the kind of last thing that I know Frank Gorshon for was in the early two thousands, there was a great animated series called The Batman in which he starred as doctor Hugo Strange. And if you've seen that that show recently, you'll know that he's kind of the last villain that you see in the final episode of that series. So fantastic actor, very iconic. I love this episode. Let that be your last battlefield. But I really really love him as the Riddler as well. So Frank Gorson Junior born in April fifth, nineteen thirty three. We lost him back in May of two thousand and five at the age

1:27:23 of seventy two years old. Happy birthday to Frank. And that you guys does it for our remembrances this week. Okay, thank you Eric. Awesome. So let's go on a few birthdays. Let's start off the Happy birthday Alexander Enburg. Actor best known is star Trek fans or his recording role with Insynboric in Star Trek Voyagers, one of our recognizable Vulcans in that series. Birthday to Mona Grunt, Norwegian actress and model who played Entign Graham and TG's four season episode Identity Crisis. Happy Birthday to Ca c Rawl, actress who played Rachel Garrett in Star Trek Section thirty one, and last one of my list. Happy Birthday to Casey Biggs is the actor best known for portrayal as Jamar in Star Trek d Space nine, as well as several other roles.

1:28:36 Let's just talk about, real quick, how great of a character Goldemar is and how much Casey Biggs completely knocked this character out of the park. I mean, I'm a huge DS nine fan, and as as character arcs go, Goldemar has probably one of the greatest arcs in Deep Space nine, and his portrayal of this particular character is so on point. I just want to say, Casey Biggs, if you ever hear this podcast, I love you, man, and I would love to talk to you because you are one of my favorite all time characters from Deep Space nine. Yes, sounds exactly.

1:29:17 Eric. Eric is he the one who discovers he's got like a half Bajoran daughter. Uh no, that's that's Golducott. But but he's the one who like is a heavy, heavy drinker and like eventually kind of comes around to having more empathy for the Bajorans and kind of their entire cause along the way. Yeah, okay, so he kind of like the faith he does does. He starts out hard ass Kardassian, and as the series goes on, he just like evolves and you sort of see and it's and it's his it's because he's constantly kind of being berated by people like gold Ucott for his heavy drinking and that sort of stuff that he's he like starts feeling. He starts off feeling really bad about himself. But then as he kind of sheds the shackles of this drinking, he kind of discovers himself and he sort of finds who he really is inside himself, and you see the evolution of his character happened very quickly.

1:30:15 Yeah, so it's almost like one of those Nazi officers who realizes absolutely, I've been guys. It's like, you know, and they have an enlightenment. As usual, they killed them off immediately after the enlightenment. Yeah, we also apparently. Was he also the ex husband of Hanna Dohnson Dohnson Dawson. Maybe I don't remember that part. Yeah, yeah, when she was on Voyager and then she dropped. You mean in real life? Okay, Like I have no idea, I know a lot about the character.

1:30:58 And klingon on. Yeah, well, sorry to digress, Continue on, Charles. Actually, I'll pass the candle over to Paul. Alrighty, Charles, thank you, sir. Well, let's continue these April cavalcade of birthdays in the Trek universe here, friends, and we'll say happy birthday to Alexandra Lighten, actress who played the role of Jammel in the Classic Enterprise fourth season episode The A and R. All right, excellent For those of us who are big Andrian aficionados, Eric's given a big thumbs up. Would you say, one of the greatest Androian episodes ever?

1:31:39 Eric, Yes, I love any Andorian episode, but this one in particular is so great because it has such like cultural racial implications at which Star Trek Enterprise doesn't often touch on. And to me, this is one of the ones. It's just like, WHOA, you're blowing my mind right now? Yeah? Yeah. Different. Also, the first genervation of the an, right, I don't think we've ever heard about them before. Nope. Yeah, very cool. Love those episodes when when Enterprise uh hits its sweet spot, right, it's really cool, and I think it just doesn't get the credit. I think people are finally discovering it, but I don't think it gets that. It does feel like that, Like I've heard a lot more, I've seen a lot more things online where people are like, you know what, Enterprise was actually pretty good and despite the whole like temporal cold war, which people still are pretty cold on, there's a lot of episodes in those first couple uh seasons that are really good.

1:32:33 A freaking theme song really torpedo to them. My people couldn't get they couldn't get passed through. It's true, You're right. It's just it's like if you you know, see something without their pants at an inopportune moment, right, you're like, oh, and I think I kept people from it. It did a lot of damage. I mean they you know, not that it's the worst song in the world. I mean, you know, but still it's. But you're totally raped. It sort of sets you up, like mentally when you go to watch an episode and you hear this awful theme song, You're just like, ah am, I even gonna like this? Right, it doesn't. It doesn't have the gravi toss that so many of our Star Trek themes actually have. Yeah, it doesn't say epic adventure of exploration. Right, just kind of says, hey, folksy uncle that I don't really enjoy going to pick.

1:33:19 Next with singing with his guitar. Yeah, I really gotta go. Anyhow, let's media use that man, get a battlet up your ass pretty sooner. Okay, but great episode. Let's continue the birthday cavalcade. Happy Birthday to see a Valenza actress from New York City who played to Shanik in first season Next Gen episode Coming of Age, and she came back to the Star Trek universe to voice the computer of the Shenzu in Star Trek Discoveries. Early is so pretty cool on there, and I'm seeing that she was also in Space Above and Beyond. Very not a lot of people are hip to that show, but a very cool early precursor sci fi show. They did some cool stuff way before the you know, Ronald D.

1:34:18 Moore Battlestar Galactica. That I've literally never heard. Of that, and I think even before even before I think I could have my timeline screwed up because it was right around the same time as Starship Troopers. I think maybe Space Above Me Beyond came first. But it's pretty cool and they had a pretty cool nemesis ongoing, you know, uh space war thing, I you know, I mean, I just put up there in the watchability zone with. The battle Ar two years before A Starship Troopers. Yeah, YEA Beyond was ninety five. Starship Troopers is ninety seven. Because you watch it, you go like this came before Battlestar. Really, I mean, it's really interesting.

1:35:00 That is seven point eight on IMDb. That's they weren't on for a long time, but they did some cool stuff when they were, so definitely it's it's one of those unsung gems, right, you know, came out at a time when you know, there wasn't as much attention for these shows and they flew off the air really quickly. But definitely check it out. Love Coming of Age. I think that's a really good, uh first season episode of Next I think a really cool one. So Happy Birthday to see you, Happy Birthday also to Judy McConnell, actress from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who played Yeoman Tankrist in the second season episode Wolf in the Fold. We are always talking about young ladies who ended up getting threatened by Minister Hengus there and his Jack the Ripper possession. Right, she's like high on the laughing gas there is. She's being inappropriately contained. Ye bad, It's like the stuff people think it's okay. It's just boggling in my mind.

1:36:01 For those fans who don't know, he voiced Piglet and Winnie the Pooh, So if Piglet was holding a knife to you, you'd probably be laughing to. Yeah, well, you know, maybe maybe he should have, you know, maybe you know, not treat the ladies like his own personal jar of honey in that case. So it might be my advice, that's what I'm Yeah, but you know, it's a it's a great thankless time of culture for actresses in the sixties who were attracted and god war, they were just treated like. I can't even imagine what they treated like furniture. You had to have like a thick hide. Man. I don't know how they pulled it off back then. It's just crazy. So let's leave the sixties behind Gillimore contemporary here with somebody who I I always wonderful see more of in the Star Trek universe here because it's kind of made a pretty dolible initial first impression. And that's Ed Spiliers. Okay, just this week April seventh, English actor Ed Spiliers, who played Jack Crusher and the third season of Picard, right, a season that I think kind of resurrected the Picard Show for me and made it you know, certainly it's it's you know, it's fair to say, right, it's just you know, it's season eight of Star Trek the Next Generation, right, I mean it's kind of is.

1:37:17 But he was cool. It was an interesting uh uh father son dynamic was John Luke there and uh And initially we're like, what do you mean Beverley had a secret son? And everyone was like, including me at the beginning, right, it was like canon, oh, you know a lot of yelling at clouds ensues. Yes, but I think he did a really good job and he hung in there and he worked a character and built really good rapport with Gates McFadden and uh and I think, you know, made a good character. So really fun, and so I I think, you know, whatever we end up iterations, we see if they'll ever be a Star Trek legacy. Uh, you know, we don't know, right, there's a lot of chatter. You never know, but I think this is a character that would be worth continuing to explore. Maybe. So Happy birthday, April, friends, and we may have one or two more from Uncle Jeers.

1:38:16 Well, I thank you, Paul. I only have one, and I usually saved the Klingons for last, and this guy was a Klingon amongst other roles. We want to say happy birthday to Phil Morris. And there he is right there. He's the actor who played a Mary Native in The Star Trek the Original series first season episode Mary. He played Cadet Foster and Star Trek three the Search for Spock. You guys might remember him. He's the guy that thought they should have had a hero's welcome when they got home. And he also played Rama Kalan in Deep Space nine six season episode Rocks and Shoals. He also played John Kelly in The Voyager six season episode one Small Step.

1:38:58 But I'm going to send out a hearty law to him and remember him from the Deep Space nine fifth season episode Looking for Parmak in all the Wrong Places. Outstanding episode. And of course who did he play? There's his picture right up there on the screen. He played Commander Sooppak in that episode. And that, my friends, wraps up our Star Trek birthdays. And now it's time for our Star Trek News. Priority one message from Starfleet coming in on secure channel. Incoming transmission Enter authorization code, command codes verified.

1:39:42 Define parameters of program level nine. Authorization required, Specifying parameters. Transfer updata is complete. Blank alert blank alert. I just want to beat to that. I want to add. Parameters, parameters, specify parameters, parameters, parameters. To alight, I'm game, all right. Well, Paul is going to start us off with our first story tonight, take it away. I am because I am a fan of the craft. Yes, so we are going to talk about the great pleasure that Paul Giamatti takes in being the villain, teasing his upcoming work in Star Trek Starfleet Academy. The great, magnificently talented Paul Giamatti is going to be menacing both students and faculty alike in Paramountlus's newest Star Trek series. Excuse me, Star Trek star Fleet Academy. However, Tal's details about the series have remained very top secret so far, but we do know a bit of his villainous character was said to have a mysterious connection to his Starfleet Academy student, he said, talking about his character, he takes great pleasure in being the villain. He likes it and it's very much a part of this thing that he's all, Oh yeah, I'm the bad guy. Oh interesting. Giamatti also talked up the show's sets on Toronto's Star Trek Stage with Star

1:41:15 Trek veteran Jonathan Frakes, recently described as the most massive set of any Star Trek series ever. It's one of the biggest. I have been on and been on some big sets, most of them are outdoor, and this is the biggest indoor one, and I can say it's a central part of the show. However, that wasn't the only set that wowed Giamatti. He also discussed the show's starship, the existence of which was also recently revealed by Frakes. The bridge is really impressive in this one, he explained. As impressive as the huge one is, I think the bridge is more impressive. How did Paul Giamatti end up on a Star Trek series anyway. Well. The actor attributes it to his press campaign surrounding his Oscar nomination for the Holdovers. With the production of the show's first season recently rapping, Giammotty did take souvenir home from the set, but he didn't have to resort to villainy to acquire it. He told Colleider, I was actually given something of my characters. They said, do you want to take this?

1:42:09 And I did so I did. I didn't just lift a phaser or something like that. He then gave one final tease of the series that should excite Star Trek fans. To my mind, it feels very very old school Star Trek. My character is a very fun villain. He reminds me of a combination of classic track villains. That's all I'll really say. That's very encouraging, Paul. Starfleet Academy will take off where the recently departed Star Trek Discovery left off, with the Federation rebuilding from a massive disaster in the thirty second century. The Academy has reopened its doors after a long period of inactivity. Excitement, adventure, and danger await its new class of students. Those students will be played by Zoe Steiner, Bella Shephard, Caris Brooks, George Hawkins, Kareem Diane and Sandro Rostap. Meanwhile, the fact they will included Chancellor played by Holly Hunter, including star Fleet veterans Jeff jet Reno, tag Notaro, Sylvia Tilly, Mary Wiseman, Charles Vance as in Admiral Vance, oded Fair and Star Trek voyagers. Holographic doctor Robert Priccardo, along with Trek newcomer Gina yeshire Or from Black's Tatiana Masline and professional professional wrestler Becky Lynch will also play in unspecified roles on the series. We don't know when Starfleet Academy is coming or airing. We believe though, we're going to be finding ourselves waiting until twenty twenty six. It sounds like assuming civilization is still.

1:43:41 A thing, but we have but we have the return of the Silver Fox, Charles Vance, so you know. By that and you know it's still it's like you know, I mean, we get excited when a new Star Trek comes together, right and whatnot. But you know when I you tell me you got Paul g and Maadi and Holly Hunter on the show. I mean, I'm like, I'm willing to give complete benefit of the doubt and just see what they got, right, I'm going in. I mean, I hear it's very comedic in places, right, I mean I have heard that. I've heard it's very comedic. She's done a lot of work on the show, writing it. But she's also you know, Tony Newsman is pretty smart, you know, and so she's like, she's good at good comedy, right.

1:44:26 And and Paul Giamatti, if you've not seen Sideways, you want to see his comedy jops, you know. So it's like, you know, I would normally be a little skeptical about throwing too much comedy in my star Trek as we started to see that happening in Strange in the World a bit. But but with you know, and Holly Hunter from Raising Arizona, these people can do both sides of the street drama and comedy, so maybe this show can do that too. But hearing him describe it as being very old school is kind of cool because that's good Paul storytelling, you know, forget the you know, just just the kind of storytelling that used to tell. And there series very compelling and exciting, and you know, I think it lends itself to a younger group of characters who are finding their way right. So I'm excited to see where this goes. But a big fan of Paul Gi and Mahdi Man and would love to get him on the show. That would be incredible. Get a couple hours with this guy, Okay, And I think that's the end of that story. So let's pass this on to Charles there on his palatial rooftop estate. Charles, take it away.

1:45:32 Oh thank you, Paul. Star Trek actress Michelle Heard to be honored the twenty twenty five Los Crusis International Film Festival the Lost Crisis International Film Food Film Festival as Michelle hurds with superstard lineup. Herd received the Outsting Achievement in Drama during the festival awards ceremony at seven pm Saturday, April twelve at The Theater in downtown Las Cruses. She will also be headlining a panel star Trek bulla Golding from Script to Screen from two to three point thirty Saturday, April twelfth the Rio Grand Theater. Heard recently starred a post Patrick Stewart for the three seasons of Star Trek Bricard she All Swiss started along Sidney Swaeney and Glenn Powell and Anybody But You, an independent film somewhere in Montana with Graham A.

1:46:35 Tavish in theaters now among many TV credits heard will appear in the fifth and final season of You. For Netflix. Film cres include the Plus one opposing Cedric theatertainer, bad Hair opposed Blair Underwood, and Veneza Williams being Frank opposed Jim Gaffigan, be Afraid We Don't Belong Here with catherineet Keener and may Rudolph and Search Engines which in the Dark Girls mostly likely with Christine Wig. The LCIFF is now the largest student run film festival in the country, Like proctately eighty to one hundred and MSU students in the Created Media Institute and Created Media Technology Programs and the Donna Anna Community College will work together putting on this film festival. Sounds very entertaining.

1:47:39 Sounds amazing. I'll tell you that I've seen Michelle Hurd on stage in a panel here in Portland at a comic con, and if you put her in Gates McFadden in the same panel. It would probably create some kind of like nuclear chain reaction that would power the United States. Because both of them are two of the most dynamic, incredible women that I have ever seen on stage. Like Michelle, Hurt does not mess around, She does not pull any punches. She tells you exactly what she's thinking, and she's extremely progressive in her vision for people and women in the United States. So I just I love her so much. Yeah, this is very exciting for me.

1:48:30 Well, wasn't she leading the rally of the troops with the actors strike. She was run the front line, right there in front, and I think Gates was a little younger, she would have been up there hand to toe with her doing it. The first event kicks off on Friday, April twenty fifth, in just two weeks, and continues with select nights through Sunday, May eighteenth, twenty twenty five. The main Star Trek component for Fan Fast Nights will be the brand new Red Alert experience, which will quote boldly take guests on an immersive adventure aboard the USS Enterprise NCC seventeen oh one D on a mission to prevent an interstellar threat woo. The scripted walkthrough experience includes costumed actors playing the parts of the crew, special effects, and the actual USS Enterprise D bridge set used for the third and final season of Picard. In addition to the new experiences for each franchise, Fan Fest Nights includes themed food and beverages designed to complement this breakthrough event. The Star Trek culinary choices will be available at two main locations. For eating like a Trekkie, you can visit Quarks Cafe at Hollywood and Vine. Oh, Hollywood

1:50:47 and Dne excuse me. Here are the Trek food items that they have created for the event. Klingon targ legs, char suis honey poor wings served with kimchi fried rice, but Jorin hasparrat, slow cooked spicy pork, gonjuang pickled vegetables with serracha mayonnaise delicious. And Dorian red bat sandwich, which is herb marinated chicken breast on a bow bun with garlic, aoli char and charred red onion. Vulcan fritters, fried mushroom fritters served with hummus and dusted with red spice vulcan logo.

1:51:31 I love it. Triple Truffle Trio a trio of chocolate truffles topped with coconut. Yeah, that sounds pretty good, David. I would give that a go. Clingon Blood Wine a popular clingon wine and Dorian Ale. This blue colored alcoholic beverage is made with gin, blue cracao, lemonade, lemon slash, lime soda and garnished with blue vanilla cake frosting and pop rocks. I love it. 1:52:12 Yeah, why not? But jorin Ale a traditional Quark cocktail served with and without alcohol. Canar a popular Cardassian liquor made with aged rum, pomegranate juice, black cherry syrup, lemon juice, and soda. Water That sounds much more accurate than the Canar wine we tried romulan Ale. These, you guys, are the articles that make me kind of wish just a little bit that I lived in the Los Angeles area. I mean, I still wouldn't want to deal with the traffic. It's like, Oh, that's gonna be huge event. I might share with you guys if I find some good link to people who do some good videoing of the event. You totally should. This sounds like a really big deal and I am all about the culinary experiences. And I wish I could have one of each of these drinks.

1:54:12 I'd probably be messed up at the end of the night, but they all sound delicious. As I've seen with viewing from Disneyland, you gotta hit the food because some of these food festivals just are incredible. That's what I'm saying.
