0:48 About the series coming to mind the tree services. Now talk about the series. Cows of the show. Well, good evening, Trekkies and Trekkers around the globe. It It's Thursday, December twelfth, twenty twenty four, and this is episode six hundred and fourteenth Truk Talking. God, I love that theme song. You guys love that theme song as much as I do. It's a dance to it. It's a banger. Is an awesome song.
1:29 That really is an awesome We should excellent idea. We should for sure. So I'm your most excellent host, Uncle Jim, And this is Trek Talking. Thank you for tuning in. We have a great show planning for you guys tonight we're going to be talking about Star Trek Lower Decks fully Dilated, which which is a really great episode. We also have a section thirty one comic book and a section thirty one trailer to talk about and start news, as well as our Star Trek birthdays, our fan shout outs, and of course our scores for the episode. So we've got a lot going on. Don't go away. But before we get too far, I want to introduce to you guys my awesome, my incredible Truck's first and we'll start out with Eric. Eric is out in Portland. How you doing tonight, Eric?
2:17 I am doing pretty good, you guys. You know, I just had a chance, finally today to watch this episode. I am very much looking forward to talking about it and very much looking forward to like where Trek talking is going right now. Man, We've got all kinds of changes happening. We got riverside, we got possible video, possible Patreon upgrade, we got all kinds of possible stuff. So we'll have to see what's going on here. But I'm really excited. Yeah, trek Talk and I think twenty twenty five is going to be the year of trek Talk and we've got a lot of pokers in the fire, don't forget that. On the seventeenth we're going to have Tim Russ on the show. Mister Tubac himself is going to be here to take your questions, and there's going to be a lot of stuff going on, so you definitely want to be be a friend of trek Talking in twenty twenty five.
3:00 We also have with us in Portland. It's got to be the water our very own toy guy. Paul, Welcome to the show. How are you doing tonight, Paul. Hey, uncle Jim, I'm good. I'm good, brother, I'm good. Things are in the mad chaos of the holidays right, A lot going on, absolutely, and if you are one of those people who has, you know, family that has a birthday during this particular time of the year, it gets doubly crazy with all the orchestrations and whatnot. But you know, I think I gotta just say we have never sounded better. I mean some of the audio that we used to listen to the shows and how our MIC's used to be was just like, oh, Mike, I mean the theme song at the beginning has never sounded clear, it never sounded better. I mean, the audio upgrade is great.
3:43 And so I think the lesson we should all take from this is sometimes when bad stuff happens, you're like, oh, oh, change scary, you know, O, you know, our house is on fire, we're losing our whatever, right, not necessarily always just leading to a bad outcome. Sometimes unexpected change could be really good. Because I think this is infinitely better than where we were hanging their hat before. So yeah, I echo your sentiments of optimism. I agree. I think that blog talk radio failing was a great thing for us because now we have this video feed, we have full HD, We're going to be doing some great stuff. And speaking of birthdays, Paul, December nineteenth, which is next Thursday, is my wife's birthday. Then we have Christmas, and then at three fourteen on the thirty first, we have my daughter's birthday, she'll be turning thirty, and then we have New Year's all in that same week for me. So I know what you're talking about about a busy December.
4:39 Oh yeah, for sure, I hear you. It's good to be it is good. It's very good. And also from Portland. He's getting in on that Portland water, is my mister Scottie the man himself. David, how you doing. David drinking out Poling water? Pretty good, it's pretty good. Give me your he's got cotton. Yeah, so David, you guys are going to see some pretty amazing stuff tonight. This is our test run and David and I have been working on this show all week for you guys, so I hope you enjoy it. And last but not least, from Vegas. And remember what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. We have Charles.
5:21 It's not so great at the Lake Water. Yes, there's new news on Patreon, giving Uncle Jim a little bit of a break, and I'm taking over with a brand new pond. We get some new memberships and get some new people joining in and all kinds of fun stuff hoping to share. With it, and I do probase my members. We won't let you miss Tekita night, definitely not. I don't want to miss Tequita. Yes, that's right. Our uh yeah, we're we're still having problems with Facebook, guys. Their AI is still out of whack.
6:03 The trek Talking page is up. You can go to it, but I can't post on it. It's really weird. But eventually we'll get that figured out and we'll get our Patreon information out there to you guys. So we're looking forward to that. Speaking of what's going on with trek Talking, you can go to trek Talking dot com, which I highly recommend anyways, And when you go there, in the bottom right hand corner, there's a little blue talkback mic. And why am I telling you about this because on the seventeenth we're gonna have Tim Ross with us on the show. If you would like to ask him a question, go to trek Talking dot com, click on that little mic and record your question for Tim Russ. We will play your question for him live on the air and have him answer it on the seventeenth. So please head over to trek Talking dot com and leave your questions for Tim Ross. Oh well, not only Tim. You can go there and tell us how great we are, tell us what you thought about an episode, tell us you love the theme song, tell us what a great job David did with the presentation we're about to see anything.
7:05 The fact is, we love to hear from you guys, because we're fans like you and we love to hear from our fans. All right, Yeah, what else do I gotta say? Yeah? So, when our Facebook page is back up and running, you can go there and tell us where you're listening from. You will see pinned to the top of the page they live long and prosper saying hey, dudes, where are you from. Eventually that will be back up and that's where we get our fans shout outs from. So Eric, would you like to get us started with our fans shout outs this week? Oh? Yeah, absolutely. Jim. And last on my list is w Cleve buck Doll from Salt Lake City, Utah. Paul, who's on your list?
10:26 All kinds of folks, my friend all over the globe. First of all, we're gonna say hello to our good pal Sharon. Maltby. Sorry, that's a very fine font there. I'm gonna work on that. Sharon Maltby from Nottingham, England. Good old Sherwood, Sherwood forest. Denizen's there the land of robin Hood, where the rich are robbed and their wealth redistributed. Kind of liking that idea, Sharon. Love Robin hood when I was a little yeah, I mean too. A big Arrow Flynn fan. So I'm gonna have to go over there to the old home soil and see what the all the real McCoy looks like. So great to know that you're out there listening to us and being a fan of all things track Sharon and saying hello.
11:07 Also to Marla's Eloisa Gloria Kong living in Switzerland currently but originally from Hey, Charles, Las Vegas. How about that, right? So you two Charles could leave the desert lake water blight behind you and moved to Switzerland like Marley's did. So you know she's an exemplar role model. You could get out of there, buddy. So who knows she's paving the way. And we were just talking about Costa Rica a couple of minutes ago, and here is a fan from that very land, that magical, enchanted realm. Fernando Chada is from Costa Rica, a phenomenal place to hang one's hat and visit. And if you've never been there, oh my god, visit it's great. Highly recommend it. And lastly, for me, I'm keeping the Continental flair. Here we have Vaklov Dolonski from Chechia with f proudly unfurled. So club great to hear from you and from all of our friends on all corners of the globe. Let's see how many crazy denizens that Uncle Jim is going to greet today.
12:16 Yeah. First of all, we'd like to say thank you to Eric Anderson, who's listening to us right now in Houston, Texas. Hopefully Houston doesn't have a problem. We also want to say thank you to James Carrol Diamore from Michigan, USA, and Cindy Luke Carter from Jersey City represent dog represent and last but not least, Joshua Lee Rushing from Los Angeles, California. If you guys would like to hear yourselves mentioned on a future fan shout out, please head over to our Facebook page when it's fixed and drop us a line. And yes, this is my puppy dog, Leyah, who you just saw a minute ago. She's ten months old today, so happy birthday to Leya. And luckily my cat Anakin is not in here right now. I locked him out, so it's just me and Leah doing the podcast with you guys.
13:07 Another birthday for December. Yeah, it's another December birthday, but she's not too demanding, all right, guys. So now it's time for our Star Trek polls. With me. LiNpO Lino Lin you know me like no Wind, what you thought about the show? Then we try. To share your. Opinions with all of our minions out there because they listen worldwide. So tell us just what you think. Get together, we will alter Canara and Robulin A.
13:49 Well, I don't know about you, but I'll be cracking some of that kling On blood wine myself. But uh, yeah, what do you think about that song? That sounds sounds pretty good and full stare yo, doesn't it? Yeah? Not too bad, not too bad? All right. So on our Facebook page, I always throw out some poles, and because I've been locked off the Facebook page for about three weeks now, I've got to rely on old poles, which I guess is fine. Old poles are better than no poles, I guess. So, Eric, what was our first poll question? Honestly, Jim, this is one of my favorite pool questions You've ever asked. What do you like best on Riker?
14:30 No Beard, Beard, wild Beard or gray Beard? And this is a fantastic question because there really is an evolution of Riker and a couple of one shots like wild Beard here. So I just I just love this question so much. Okay, so here we go. This is what the fans have have said. Coming in in fourth place. Out of those, we have wild Beard with only four percent of the vote, which I think is fair. I mean, it's one episode and it's only what like maybe thirty seconds of that episode, maybe a minute of that episode, so we haven't seen too much. Riker won't go back. But but what we saw was pretty amazing, and the wild Beard is probably my personal favorite.
15:18 So four percent of our listeners like wild first season. No, you're you are mute to Jim. Oh no, he's talking to the dogs. See this is why video gets us into trouble. I got to not be like a professional. I'll get used to it. Guys. Coming in in second place, we have or excuse me, I guess in third place, we have no Beard Riker from first season, of course, with eight percent of the vote, which is you know, nice clean shaven Riker. It's actually the one that I think Deanna prefers, if I remember correctly, although that may be untrue by the time we get to pocard. So eight percent of our listeners like no Beard Riker. Five percent of our listeners like Graybeard Riker from the Picard era, you know, distinguished riker. And you know, we're not talking about fake gray Beard Riker from back in the nineties. We're talking about real grape like after Jonathan Fraake's actually aged. What did he look like? And you know, I mean, he's a nice looking man. And twenty five percent of our listeners agree that he's their favorite Riker. But by far everybody's favorite is season two through season seven Riker, regular beard Riker with that suave look, that amazing hair, those blue eyes. I mean, who doesn't love this guy? Who doesn't love sixty three percent? You know beard, regular bearded Riker like sixty three percent of our listeners. So pretty good poll, pretty good spread. I
16:50 think there I got with my. With gray Beard. I think he looks very I like how Rikers kept himself upper cards. And some of that's getting a little older, the gray look down. Nice kind I kind of liked the gray Beard Riker too, if I remember correctly. Isn't he the one that told uh commodore o that that he would love to kick some romulant ass. Wasn't that the Great beard Riker? Yeah? Yeah, I kind of like the Great Beard Riker with. His thousand copies of the same ship. Yeah, the ning Tower, Nick Singhau or something I can't remember. Zing hey, right, yeah, I kind of liked him.
17:30 I thought he was pretty cool. Cool, he was pretty cool, all right. Well, moving on to our next pole. I guess this is I would imagine, probably one of Jim's favorite polls that he's ever asked on. Is that true? Jim's Yeah, it's right there. Yeah, yeah, that's right there. So which one of these three klingon to her masters is your favorite? Kang cor or Coloth? And uh, let's see drum roll please, Uh of course we have coming in third place, we have Kang Classic Kang always just a little bit behind the scenes, but an important contributor to the whole Harrormaster thing. No question.
18:11 Percent of our listeners chose Coloth as their favorite, which I think is pretty cool. He's got like a ship named after him and a bunch of other cool stuff that he's done. But you know the one that everybody really in the end completely loves through and through with their heart I think is Core and that's probably uh, you know, he's a leader. He's got his own house as far as I know, House of Core, right, and sixty two percent of our listeners chose him as their favorite klingon the Horror Master, so they're. Having I think they all have the name named after himself to the House of Kane and coloth I believe it. Well, oh yeah, you're probably right. And do you know why Core is everyone's favorite, right. Because he hangs out with with the Dobble girls.
18:56 Yeah, he's just looking at that face, right, look at that guy, right, he's just out of control. Right, he's the most he's the most unhinged and emotional and demonstrative of all of them. Right, it's like thanks kind of like become like you know, Clint Eastwood, and you know, like what what was the El Camino? Right, get off my own kind of like you know, turning into a grumple still skin right, And and Colath is I don't know what happened to him because it's like he used to be like, you know, kind of cool and really like, you know, ridiculously up to no good in original series, right, very much up to No Good and it's like he's almost become legit. He seems sort of like, you know, he sort of comes across like he's lost his stones or something. I don't know, he's all he's been neutered.
19:40 It feels like neutered Colath, right. But Core is just getting wilder the older he gets. He's just like he's ready to just you know, you know, pick up a letter opener and gouge your eyeballs out with minutes. So that's it's great. And like you said, he's partying up a storm. He's just like he is not going quietly into the good night. So I think people like his energy. Yep. And I was telling Paul and are in chat there. I was watching Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, the original nineteen sixty one movie, and I see Michael and Sara Kang in the movie and I was like, wow, that's Kang from Star Trek. I was like wow. And he walks around carrying a dog through the submarine, through the whole episodes, through the whole movie. But at any rate, I did see him in another movie, which I thought was pretty cool. But yeah, I do like Core. And not only that. Core was in the most episodes as well, so he got more more exposure than the other Klingons perhaps, and and Core played Boltar in Battlestar Galactica too, so he's got to get some points for that.
20:49 Do we know how the discovery cor is, Like, is it the same Core. That he's from the House of Corn? That? Yes, that was that was Uh that. Was Core, but uh it was Core named court court Cha or he had like another Yeah, it was Decor or court Cha something. Relative like Don Junior, right, yeah, lesser lesser than you. Know, Yeah, he was a Core, but not the Core. He had a similar attitude, you know, he had that kind of like. But we don't know. We don't know if if Kor actually died when he took on that Dominion fleet, he could have survived.
21:32 Could be I mean, Lord knows that ship has won me enough games in Star Trek Attackling he. Could still be out there. I can attach to that, all right. So now we're gonna now we're gonna go to our cadet training and. Low your shields and your ships. We will add. Logical distinctive storwn. Your culture will adapt to serve us resistance. Fut So, because I don't have the cadet training I had to play that. So this is the part of the show where Charles shares with us really fun, insightful tidbits about this week's episode.
22:19 So Charles to take it away. I'm trying to get a new cadet training audio and I got some ideas. Okay, several definitely one shots on this episode. Let's start off with one of the obvious ones that we all enjoy. DNNG The Inner Light Season five, episode five. All these episode really needs an explanation. I think everybody remember dnng's Time zero season five episode twenty six and season six episode one. Oh Data without the Data missing, the rest of his body, just. Coming Data stuck in time and CNG thoes thine own self.
23:05 Season seven, episode sixteen, Data revisiting a pre war society. It's the first time. Data spent time my another planet with. A strange group. Voyager Gravity season five. That's of episode thirteen, Mariner references Dileminar three, Garrison two bout Kraftland on a desert planet for several months. Ah. Nice classic. You knows City on the Edge of Forever Season one, episode twenty eight. Take me the fact that Spock's having to use random parts to create tech just Atinua and then episode. We had some fun talking about on this show. One Time Enterprise Carbon.
23:50 Creek Season two, episode two, You've got Vulcan stuck on Earth, another group stuck on a foreign planet, and heaven tout a way from there. I think Eric would love to talk about what the fans thought when he turns his mike. On absolutely on uh yeah, and on our Facebook page when it gets going, I ask you guys to score the episode one to ten and then we talk about what you guys thought. So Eric, you want to take it away. I absolutely do. And Charles, you know that was just my dramatic pause before the real presentation. So Corinthia Klein, a top contributor to our Facebook page, said, excellent episode all around. I liked in particular that Mariner has had a chance to calm down and mature this season, but that her essence in the new place was still making buddies in the brig Packy Anderson, another top contributor, says, look at to Lynd's massive melons, I mean the grapes out line a line like I mean, We're going to talk a lot about this episode but that line was just one of many real singers. Leah Marie Longbreak, a top contributor, said, I can't believe there wasn't a nice melon's joke. Oh wait, there was a massive melon's joke, but it was Yeah, there was Ellen smock. To me, this is one of the most star trek episodes of the series. It's really about characters. The comedy is secondary.
25:21 Joseph Finn, a top contributor, said, get a job, Snell. Michael O'Sullivan, a top contributor, said my favorite episode so far this season. Brian Bunch said, as soon as our sneaky local spoke, I rolled my eyes and laughter. I know that voice, and only good things shall follow. Mac Davidson, I love episodes with the three main girls here. They are usually the best for me. And Spencer Cooley, a top contributor, said, the jokes landed better than the character stuff this episode. Honestly, I feel like the Mariner subplot would have made more sense for somebody else. Snell was a lot of fun, though I still feel good about the season, but this isn't one of my favorite episodes.
26:07 We have a fan score this week everyone of please eight point two eight point two and eight point two ain't nothing to scoff at, but it's not at the top of our list of episodes, so kind of interesting. Yeah we should. We should talk about. That, Yeah we should. What do you guys think about the slide show that David put together for us? Isn't that cool? It kind of the mood? Yeah, I think I kind of like it. David is demand, thanks, David really is he is demand. That's cool and the best is yet to come because he's got some more magic up asleep. He's my miracle worker, yo. Dog, I promise I won't disappear, all right?
26:49 So who wants to start us off? Charles? You want to get us started with? Fully dilated or not? Maybe Charles is muted. Charles is muted. He's talking, but we cannot hear him. We have a lot of notes on this one because I didn't get a chance to see it till definitely gave me flavors off. Early carbon free. Definitely. Though there does seem to like getting herself in trouble. I do like the competition between our two gals. There's going to be a new leads a head of the news, head of the science department, and I like how each of them is trying to go their own way and not realizing that Tiend's so worried about trying to do her best and Delenne just doing whatever she can do, which I think to Len, I think reminds me a little bit of spot Tilly remind me of just.
27:50 Trying to find all the time she could to try reproducing for City on the Edge of Forever with them too. Yeah, made a note on my comments like, oh time Data's head. It's like as I go through and realizing, oh yeah, time zero was the episode I was looking at. But that was a good We always talked about the great episode of Best of Both Worlds going from is Righter going to die? I mean not record you card going to die from that? And yet we kind of wonder with Time. Zero, what's gonna happen with Data?
28:30 It's origin of dining at How'd I deal with Time? The one thing that kind of got me in this episode wasn't the gals what's the boy? It's like, Okay, you're not supposed to have in the transporter room and they approved, why you don't need. You don't bring through the transporter room. And this attempt to clean up that that the pal just kind of brands worthy a little bit. But okay, that's kidding just way, and. Just find some towels and cleaned up. Why are we stripping our uniform off to clean the table when you probably.
29:12 Go and find a replica replicator? Bring it, Make us a. Couple of towels. They go on water planets, they're going to use towels to dry themself. Anyway, Charles, there are no replicators in the transport. One by in the original series, Eric, was it really Yeah? He makes like a cup of soup for the guy for the security guard in season. One while he's in the transporter base. Soup, right, and well there you go, and the guys like, no ship, What the hell have you been? Wo? Ts, Yeah, you've forgotten your history, man, I have Wow.
29:58 Wow, I can tell you that our twelve episodes of Gus that I know really really really well in there somewhere. But I like data kind of guide Chilly and I like how he kind of. Helped streaming out and kind of giving her a good recommendation to what direction to go with. And it's a trope. But I truly kind of liked Mariner. And the Fleet because I thought that was a fabulous dedication too. In your Life that's a special episode. I think that was a nice dedication for the episode. And by the ways, I'm talking about this.
30:40 When we talk about the Patreon page last week and this week's Cadet Cadet. Posts will be on that page. So if you want to go back and see the stuff I talked about, go visit because I'm want to try getting many. Of these new ones out there. You can see what we're talking about. As for the episode with the guys, I'm messing this one. Very respectable, very respectable. Well. I love this episode. Not as much as the Klingon episode we saw a couple of weeks ago, obviously, but this episode I think was was pure star Trek. It was. It was really really good, really fun, really engaging. I love the whole Mariner and the jail thing, making buddies with her my friends in jail.
31:30 You know, she comes black, She's like, yo, dogs, what's going on? You know? Did you miss me? And then she has to go and learn how to play a flute. You know, it was just it was very well done. She chooses to do that, right, she's got the time, and so she's like, what would I do? And in her mind's eyes, she does what what I would do, which is what would the card do? Yees, yeah, it was it was great. It was It was very well played. It wasn't over the top. It wasn't like throwing references out there just for the fact of doing it. It was actually part of the story which I really liked. And I love the to Len to Len and the melons, and it was just hilarious. And then she makes hair tonic and everybody in the town has long flowing air and it was just it was a really good episode. And Schnell of course gets his at the end and they say, get a job, you drunk bum uh you know. That was all great.
32:23 Oh and of course let's not forget about to Anna. When she's up there the doctor, she says, she says, uh, you know, I'm a doctor. I'm not What the hell was it? What did she say, Eric, I'm a doctor, not an. Fing She said, whatever, the. Yes, that's it, that's if you ask me. So. Yeah, I love this episode. All the way around the Purple Enterprise. Data's head was purple. He had to get back to Jordi. The whole Data's head thing I thought was great to paying paying homage to Time's arrow so that we know in this alternate Purple universe that Data does lose his head as well. So yeah, overall, I really enjoyed this episode. I really really did much better than the zombies on the Star bas episode though that we had to endure last week. So I'm right there with Charles. I'm gonna go in an eight point eight on this one. I really really enjoyed it and I thought it was a lot of fun.
33:23 So how about you, David, Yeah, this presentation really actually brings back a lot of memories. I'm glad we're kind of doing it because I'd kind of forgotten about the Purple Enterprise and I'm like, oh, yeah that happened. Because engineer did a spectacular job putting this show together. By the way, tape was huge. But yeah, so this episode I really liked. I do agree with Charles that it did have a very clubbing Creek vibe to it. And there was another episode that you guys mentioned for during a Cadect training about where Data lutes his head. Yeah. There, you know, it does have a little bit of a trope in a sense, but at the same time. It's just like it was really well written, really well put together, and the pating just went very very good.
34:18 I liked it. I I can't remember exactly what my favorite part was in this episode, but I do remember that the melons was really funny. Oh yeah, and also. Mariner was trying to act exactly like Captain Piccard what would he do and all this, and it turned out the flute she made was soap. Somehome made it out of soap. And I'm like, okay, because it's a prison fleet, man, you ain't got there. You get away from you with that flute. But yeah, it was. It was really, really, really good. I'm gonna give this episode a nine. All right. Well that that brings us over to Paul Well, I gotta concur fellas I thought this was. It's a terrific episode.
35:01 I really did. I enjoyed it very very much. I think that, you know, the whole I just loved the whole idea of riffing on the whole bit of you know, going to a pre war civilization you know that we've seen before, right and not having we want to make sure we don't corrupt them with our you know, superior technology, who Watches the Watchers kind of thing, right, and of course things you know, break down from there because they're all pre industrial and whatnot. But it was great. I mean, the the Brent Spiner cameo was just priceless, right, It wasn't just a knockoff. I mean, I thought they used him to the lovely effect and it was a really nice, really nice I thought, respectful and you know, purposeful.
35:49 You know, it's not just a lot of times the show, we get down on it because they just do you know, shtick cameos that don't really have a point. I thought this was really nice use of him, right, was was well written and everything. I loved a lot of the gags that were in there, and of course, no surprise, a lot of them come from Mariner, right, you know, when she's complaining think about being thrown in jail. There's some ETO level bullshit going all the way back to like Justice in season one. I thought that was great, you know, and the oh you are fully functional of you know, we're an a Greek situation, right, All of that stuff was just you know, really really uh really funny, and a lot a lot of the references and the riffs to uh to other episodes, it didn't feel like it was just kind of thrown in there is it so often can feel for me, I mean, and I felt like this one was done. The writing was just so much better.
36:47 Uh. I gotta agree with Charles though on the whole, Like you know, looking off the transporter console ad nauseum, that was just like endlessly tedious. For me, I just got no where with that at all. I was just like, come on, Fellas, enough is enough. Funny title, you know, fully dilated, you got a love that, that's that's great and uh, you know, and for me, it's like if there's a trend, uh for me, I think that uh to Linn episodes rock that seems to be uh my, you know, uh takeaway from here, Right, every episode where she's had a little bit more prominent role in the last couple of seasons tend to be better episodes, right, because she has a little bit of character growth, right.
37:33 She's character and like this in this episode, she was like zing zing zing right, like all those dry zingers, Like that's she's just kind of starting to develop that and I think it's from hanging out with the other four, right. Yeah, and she's trying to do these humanistic things to create rapport with people, the things to to help you know, make connection, and and and she's it. It doesn't seem to always work, but you know her the sort of like is it is it not competitiveness with Tendy. I just love that, right because it's like Tendy is so neurotic about it, right, and and in her way, you know, to Len's neurotic about just trying to do a good job, right, And I just thought that was a nice counterpoint. So uh, you know, could have done without the extended time dilation transporter console no sense that was just you know, not so great for me. But but I generally thought it was very clever, you know, really nicely done. If like like like Jim said, this felt like Star Trekka, and this felt like good Star Trek. It didn't feel like you know, twenty something's trying to you know, sorry agism, trying to recapture what they thought Star Trek was. But but no, this felt like legit Star Trek was felt he was written from people who'd been you know, long term fans who get it right, and so I I enjoyed it very much. The Purple Filter on everything is kind of like blowing my mind. Like everything is sort
39:05 of a little purple. I'm like, did I get dosed? And I don't realize it? What happened to me? It's very purple? So she put me in the eye. You know, it's just all yeah. I mean, I'm sure in their society, like when you horn somebody like you're it's like slapping them with a gauntlet, right, you're like ready to go. Yeah. I thought it was a standout episode. So it really was a very very good work all around. The I really have nothing, uh you know, all that negative to say about it. So despite the nonsensical shenanigans in the transporter room, I'm still feeling like this just because of the references were so purposeful and they weren't just thrown off.
39:52 I thought it was just done in a smart way. I think this one deserves a nine. I really do. I think it was, you know, just an example of like, you know, yeah, it's comedy, right, but but it's also you know, done with uh you know, some taste and some and some lack of taste when necessary, right, you know, good Mariner, you know, doing Mariner. So happy to give this one a nine. Thought it was really fun. And who knew to Lynn knew how to juggle, she didn't. Know, she didn't even know. It's just good popping off. That was great. So I just thought it was really fun and it just felt.
40:36 What I like about this show is when it when it really is I think in the sweet spot and this is you know, it's a scripted show, right, this is hard to pull off, but but it's I think for me, this is when comedy feels like comedy, right, is uh, it's when the episodes feel spontaneous. Right. Sometimes they feel like overly, like Okay, we've like orchestrated all of these callouts and cameos and references, and it just ends up becoming just a real slog and it's it's more like, look what I look? How smart I am? I know this as opposed to the spontaneity of the unexpected, which is what humor is, right, the unexpected, and it feels like fresh and in the moment, and so you laugh, and I think that's that's the hallmarker with an episode.
41:22 So good stuff more like this, please, well. You know you know what I like about it, Paul, is whenever you watch Star Trek well, not just Star Trek. You could be watching a horror movie and they do the stupidest thing and you're like, haven't you ever seen Nightmare on Elm Street. You don't do that same think in Star Trek. You know, Mariner referencing other shows. I mean, you would have to think that they've read the logs and they know about the ETO, and they know about Carbon Creek and they know about these things. Because that's one thing Star Trek never does is reference itself, which I would think they would do more frequently. And lower Decks pulled it off perfect in this episode, be perfect and hilarious moment. I don't know. I was just like this is you know, sometimes there's little things that seems so perfluous. I just thought it was hilarious, like when you first realize, Okay, they're gonna be here for like a long haul, like months or whatever. And Mary was like flopped down on the floor with their feet up on the couch and I don't know if you noticed this, but they like animated like dust just like fall, you know, coming through like the sunbeam of the window above her right, Just a little thing, but you know, and it wasn't distracting.
42:31 It was kind of a nice with all the weird purple, kind of a cool, surreal intent. So I was just like somebody had that. I go, oh, no, animes of dust. Well I'm at it, and it was just hilarious. So I just thought it was really you know, uh, you know, and nothing just drug on, right, nothing really drug on. It was fresh and lively, so really really fun. It was a pleasure to watch this one. There was a good one. There is a lot of purple. I've ben't been real I looking at the presentation, I'm like, I never noticed that before. There was a whole lot of purple. I guess this whole you know, it's the leeching out from the other dimension or something. Yeah, it's a lot. Man, I'm gonna have to deep purple, purpleze myself purple.
43:16 All right, Eric, Well you got the caboose on this one. If there's anything left to mention, uh well, I. Mean there's all you know. I mean, I can talk about anything, but I think the Paul I was like he was at the end kind of summing up your thoughts about it. And the thing that I wrote at the top of my review was effortless comedy. Like, to me, this just felt effortless. Like I was watching the episode, the comedy flowed. I wasn't like it. Nothing came out of left field. There wasn't anything that felt like it was forced. I mean, to me, this was my absolute favorite episode of the season. And I love that Klingon episode for sure. There's no question that that was a great episode. This one was my favorite because I felt like the writing was the best we've probably seen so far this season. You know, there were not only the well, okay, so Lower Decks is always great at using the references, but one of you guys said something about the way in which they were used, and that was That was the thing that I kind of took away from this was that all of the references that were used were used in sort of like meaningful ways or also effortless ways that kind of like fit into the plot and.
44:27 Didn't. It wasn't just for the sake of the reference. It was because, oh, Mariner has knowledge that Picard had this experience in his life, and so therefore it informs her decisions about what she's gonna do or you know, those sort of connections. So I just really really liked that but the comedy man, like, right from the get go, I think like when tannas like genetically transforming them, you know, into the alien species, and she's talking to Tilinn about her advanced scent receptors, She's like you want me to. It's like yeah, Len's like yeah, that'd be a good idea actually, which, of course, you know, references back to the like smell things that we've seen about bulcans in the past, which I disagree.
45:14 But there's there's a lot of kind of like subtle stuff that goes on in the in the background, and like Paul was just talking about the dust on the couch. I know that not Alli y'all are a fan of the whole beard thing, but like now that Rutherford has a beard growing, and they had that kind of moment in this one where they talked about how good Rutherford's beard was coming in and how you know. I think Boimler said something about like, I'm not sure mine's the same. And Rutherford because he's Rutherford, because he is infinitely supportive, because he is a good friend. He's like, no, no, it's you know, it's gonna be okay. Maybe it'll be okay. Man, don't worry about it.
45:55 Yeah, So I just love that support from Rutherford. He's just like he's gonna row the most amazing beard, right. That thing is going to be thick and lush and beautiful, and he's gonna put beard oil in it. It's just going to be like amazing, and and poor Boimler is still going to be stuck with this like scruff on his cheeks. So I don't know, anyway, I love that kind of connection of friends through through beards. You know, I'm a guy who's pretty much worn facial hair like as soon as I could grow it up until now in various configurations, So I understand connecting over facial hair. Were saying we should have a rout the Fird's beard pole next time, Yeah, maybe or as beard pole.
46:36 Yeah. So, you know, best jokes the subtle things that are kind of like questions that we've always wondered. Like there was that one line in this one. Yeah, Data is talking about where they find him or how they dig him up in Time's Arrow, and he's something like, uh, you know Picard myself and some guy in a great jump suit dug me with all waded, Like who's the guy in the great jumpsuit, right, asking questions that we've that we've always asked. There was one thing that came out of this episode that I didn't remember, and you guys will probably remember and can remind me, But Delynn was banished to Starfleet. Can you remind me?
47:20 Yeah? I was. I was worrying about that too. I don't remember that. Yes, in the episode, in the episode Lee George where they had to kling on ship, the Vulcan ship and the board ship. Remember she she was fooling around with Justice shield modulation and her commander said, don't do that, and she did it anyways, and. They said, because you're overly emotional, right, Yeah. So they kicked her off the ship and she ended up on the critos. Okay, I had forgotten that that actually that that actually happened. So so she's she officially Starfleet. Did she get adopted in the star Fleet? Is because she got promoted to A Yeah, I would say so, because she's now. Communicator stuff And does she have to pip.
48:04 Yips? I think it's like the office Exchange program. Oh yeah, okay, it might be yeah, could be Okay. I think it was Paul who said something about Mariner being kind of like the Star. I mean, this was absolutely a great I mean just Mariner's just great overall, but like this one in particular I thought was really great for Mariner. And the moment where she starts fangirling big time over Data I thought was really special too. I mean, I I feel like if I was to meet you know, Data's head, you know, one hundred years after what I how far is this after TG? This is like this is probably only like ten or fifteen years after anyway, as number of years after TG, I would still be super excited to you know, to meet him and to be able to talk to him. Tendy powering him up with a crank is amazing. That whole reference back to Guardian Forever. I thought it was great.
49:04 So yeah, I mean, the jokes were great, The writing was really really good. You know, I can't disagree with the kind of like b story of the two guys in the transporter room. Sure, you know, a little bit of whimsy and like ridiculousness thrown in there. The good news is that I don't think they spent two well maybe they spent fifteen percent too much time there. They didn't they didn't like spend extensive time watching them wipe the screen, right, they kind of bounce back there for like a minute or two and then and then go back to the main story. So you just know though, that in that writer's room on this show, right, because you know, you know, there's one person you know, we're well, you know, it's just like there, you know, I mean, one or two writers get credit, but there's a writer's room. Everybody yells and gets it there. And you know, in this particular show, somebody in that writer's room loves like vomit comedy, right, because there's something gross happening in prettically every episode, right, they just cannot resist it. It's just like, you know, it's just like you know, they'll be mapping out the show and then you know there's gonna be that one guy, whoever it is, right, It just like nothing gross is happening, right, they have to like, you know, somebody has to get something shoved up their butt or something, right, you know. Yeah, so in this case, it was licking the transporter, you know.
50:22 Yeah. Yeah, now so there it is the other thing I like about what to just presentation reminded me of which everybody had long, beautiful hair. From from Lens Melons. Well, so, yeah, I, like I said, this is my favorite episode of the season. It's not a perfect ten, but I'm going to give it a nine point five. I just told you this. I'm gonna watch this episode multiple multiple times, probably find new ways to laugh at it every time, and it just mixes like perfect sweetness and character development and comedy and just all sorts of things together. So yeah, nine point five from me. Well, Eric, I got to jump in and tell you an Uncle Jim's story, because what would the podcast be without an Uncle Jim's story.
51:06 This is one of the best parts of the podcast, right, So everybody get around. Yeah, I got around the campfire, guys, the old guy is gonna talk. So I was at a convention. So in front of Ours got a job writing on Star Trek the Next Generation in nineteen ninety one and invited Karen and I out to Paramount to watch them film an episode. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, it happened to be the same time that they were filming the top secret wharf scene from Star Trek six, so the set was closed because they didn't want anybody to know that. Michael Dorn was doing Wharf, so we didn't get to go on the set, so we were disappointed. So we're hanging out in the Star Trek and the Paramount Commissary and who who walks in?
51:57 Now you gotta remember walked in Data Jordy and Riker. Now when I say Data, Jeordi and Riker, I'm not talking about the I'm talking about the actual characters. They were in their full garb. Data was all gold. They were in their uniforms and they came walking in and I'm just sitting there at my wife like, holy shit, look who walked in here? And we were trying to be cool because my friend that got the job said, if security knows that you're a Star Trek fan, they'll throw you out, so you gotta be cool. So I was like biting my tongue with coolness and just watching these and I'll tell you something else. These guys are the funniest. They were ragging on each other and just they were such I was I wish it was I wish I had a digital camera on my phone like I do now because it would have been all over YouTube.
52:49 But so I know what you're talking about when you say if you met data because I did, and it was cool. It was awesome to see them in their full Star Trek garb, you know, and not at a convention, so that was pretty cool. So, uh, Charles, what is the overall fans score versus the truck Spurts score for Star Trek lower decks fully dilated and. You're muted by the way, That was eight point two. And gave it a nine point oh two, which were around to a nine point Oh. Wow, wow, that's a solid score. And what did you guys think about David? Did you like David's slide show that he put together for us?
53:33 Oh? Yeah, yeah, it really helps. You know, we're talking about the episode and there's images of the episode, I mean, and nicely animated, sir, I gotta say, very well done. So and uh, you know, sharp images which is great, not you know, blurry lore as they were well done. Yeah, he's my Scottie. I gotta yeah. They gave me so much, giving me so much to talk about later just. Look, I know, or bring stuff back as you're watching. Is this so you guys, I think we're going to continue to do this from now on? What do you think? Yeah? Okay, so yeah, I think we'll keep it all right. Good job, David, good job, all right. So now this is the part of the show where we do our Star Trek birthdays and you know what that means. No Wharf says that every week, but we don't care. So this is the part of the show where we get to have a lot of fun and go back and revisit all of Star Trek with our Star Trek birthdays. And we always start off our Star Trek Birthday sadly enough, with those members the Star Trek family who are no longer with us, and for that we turned to.
54:41 Eric, Yeah, Jim. This week we're going to remember seven members of our Star Trek community who have gone before us. The first is actor Ted Knight. Ted Knight voiced the part of Carter Winston in the TAS first season episode The Survivor. However, he did not receive any screen credit for that episode. He is best known for playing the buffoonish newscaster Ted Benkster on the nineteen seventy through nineteen seventy seven CBS series The Mary Tyler Moore Show. He also starred in the nineteen eighties series Too Close for Comfort, and made appearances in myriad television series throughout the seventies and eighties, including he was in Caddyshack.
55:22 Actually, yes, taddy Shack one of the best movies ever. It is one of the best movies ever. Yeah, and it was cool to see him in that. I remember when it came out and hey, so yeah, Happy Birthday to Ted Knight are Carter Winston from the animated series Happy Birthday as well to Vlaura Nolan. That was, of course, was the stage name of Volura Baum, the former or the actress who played Darris in the TOS second season episode Patterns of Force. In addition to star treg Nolan was seen on such television shows as The Rifleman, Wagon train Man from Uncles sort of like that, a lot of those shows from back in that era. She also had a small part in the first two of William Asher's popular beach movies, Beach Party from nineteen sixty three and Muscle Beach Party from nineteen sixty four. She left Los Angeles and the acting business all together in nineteen sixty eight, soon after finishing Patterns of Fourth so that was kind of her last little acting for a So Laura Noland would have had a birthday December eighth, nineteen forty one. Happy birthday, Velaura. Happy birthday as well to Cleig W. Hoyt, the American actor who played Pitcairn in the TOS first Silot episode The Cage, which, of course we didn't see until later. He made his feature film debut with an uncredited work in the movie Mohawk. Also appeared in the nineteen fifty seven biopic The True Story of Jesse James. A few other film credits here and there.
56:53 He was in al Capone in nineteen fifty nine, et cetera. So Cleig W. Hoyt birthday, December tenth, nineteen ten. Unfortunately we lost him when he was only fifty six years old. Happy birthday, Clegg. Happy birthday to Joseph Bernard, the actor who appeared as Dark in the Los second season episode Wolf in the Fold. Bernard also made guest appearances on such television series as The Twilight Zone, The Untouchables, and Mission Impossible. He taught acting at the Lee Strasburg Theater Institute in Hollywood, and later opened his own acting school, the Joseph Bernard Acting School, in Las Vegas. So there you go, Charles. Joseph Bernard would have had a birthday, December twelfth, born in nineteen twenty three. We lost him back in two thousand and six at the age of eighty two years old. Happy birthday, Joseph, Happy birthday as well too. Well, three more people who I think are really heavy hitters. Not that everybody's not a heavy hitter, but gosh, these three people in particular, I think there's just a lot of Star Trek connection and a lot of resonance that these people bring to the franchise and the fans. Alexander Sandy Courage Junior probably heard of him, the Academy Award nominated, Emmy Award winning composer, arranger, conductor, and orchestrator who wrote several scores for Star Trek the original series. Among yeah, the main title theme. I know, you guys know that one because it's the thing that
58:24 comes to our head when we think of Star Trek. Right. He even made the woosh sound heard, you know, made by the Enterprise in the opening screen credits to that to that show, which I think is just of course. So you know, it was Jerry Goldsmith who recommended Sandy Courage to Gene Roddenberry originally Roddenberry Aske Oldsmith to score the Cage, but he actually had to decline due to some other commitments that he had, and he suggested Courage, who was mostly just an arranger at the time and not a composer, but he just had a lot of confidence in him and so Roddenberry gave him the job.
59:05 Later on, they rehired him to score the second pilot where No Man Has Gone Before. He also contributed scores for the first to the first season episodes The Man Trap and The Naked Time and some cues left in MUDs Women along the Way there. But during this time, Courage discovered that producer Gene Roddenberry actually wrote unused lyrics to his Star Trek theme in order to get half of the royalties for each episode or other usage of the main theme. This resulted in a long feud between the two men, and despite efforts by Robert Justman to rehire him, Courage refused to work on the series any further.
59:48 And I've got this quote from Sadie Courage. He said, what happened with Gene? And I was I got a phone call once. It was Jeane's lawyer. He said, calling you to tell you that since you signed a piece of paperback there saying that if Gene never wrote a lyric to your theme, he would split your royalties on the theme. Gene and I weren't enemies in any sort of way. It was just one of those things. I think it was the lawyer probably who put him up to doing it that way. And it's a shame because actually, if he'd written a decent lyric, we have both made a lot more money. Oh, he was upset that he wrote the lyric. I mean he was upset that he wrote a crappy lyric. So you know, I don't blame you, Sandy.
1:00:32 But Sandy Courage born in December tenth, nineteen nineteen. We lost him back in two thousand and eight and certainly one of the biggest stamps on all of Star Trek, just being so integral to the mood of the show and to what we think of when we think of Star Trek. So happy birthday to see any Courage. I'm surprised that Jim let me say this one, but it's probably because it's a remembrance. So thank you, Jim. Happy birthday as well to actor John Polakos. He's, of course the Canadian actor who played Corps the first major Klingon ever seen on Star Trek, and then reprised that role from the original series into Deep Space nine. He was his first season episode, Errand of Mercy was the first time that we saw him, and then later, of course we see him in the Trouble with Triples and Day of the Dove. No sorry, he was to return in both of those episodes, but they actually couldn't like make their schedules work out, so we didn't get him in those, But regardless, he was able to reprise his role in three more times on Star Trek Deep Space nine. In a career that spanned over five decades, Colocast performed in nearly one hundred film and television projects. His appearances core in Deep Space nine's seventh season episode once More Into the Breach in nineteen ninety eight, was among his last acting roles star Galactive fans you were talking about this gym.
1:02:02 Of course, fans of this series remember Colicos as the traitorous Count Baltar who sold out humanity to the evil Cylons. But you know, I admit that the first time I ever saw John Colicos was in the soap operas. My mom used to watch these in the afternoon, and I would sit and watch them with her. And soap opera fans from the eighties may recall him as Mekos Casidine with wife Helena, portrayed by Constance Towers. He was a madman bent on deestroying general hospitals, city of Poor Charles, and I have to say I do remember those episodes. I just can't help it. So John Colicos, one of the most influential Klingons of all time. Happy birthday to him.
1:02:46 Born December tenth, nineteen twenty eight, lost back in the year two thousand and last, but not least, We're saying happy Birthday this week to Terry Garr, the actress who played ROBERTA. Lincoln in the TOS second season episode as Signed and Earth. She earned an Academy Award nomination in nineteen eighty three for her supporting role in Tutsie, and is also well known for her roles for her role in Young Frankenstein from nineteen seventy four. She was born in Lakewood, Ohio, but was raised in North Hollywood, and her father, Eddie Gar, was a comedic actor. Her mother, Phyllis Lindar, worked as a costumer in films, and so that's kind of how she got into the movie business and her youth. Gar was trained in ballet and other forms of dance, and made her initial film appearance as a background dancer in beach party films featuring oohs, often accompanied by her best friend and roommate at the time, Carrie Foster. She appeared uncredited in no less than six Elvis movies from nineteen sixty three to nineteen sixty seven.
1:03:49 So happy birthday and lots of love going out to Terry Garr lost just this year, October twenty ninth, she has missed. I would have liked to have met her, of course. Don't don't forget Close Encounters of the Third, which also has some Star Trek models hanging up in his living room. If you caught them really quick and you got young Frankenstein right, I'll never forget that. She was incredible. Yeah, I got that. Yeah I said that. Yep. Uh. So that that does it for our remembrances, the sweet guys. And so I'm going to pass my flaming birthday candle here.
1:04:30 I got a list to go. So let's sorry about the Happy Birthday to Leon Russam Actors actor who played Commander in Chief and Star Trek The Undiscovered Country and by Side Wald Todman and nine Surgeon episode to Die. Let's give a big, resounding happy birthday to the lovely Terry Hatcher who we all know. Who is an actress who played BG Robinson in the Next Generation second season episode The Outrageous Okona, which has been getting a lot of reviewing lately thanks to that character's appearance on other arms of the franchise.
1:07:10 Happy Birthday also to Rachel Entherill, actress who played Commander d None in Star Trek Discovery, and a very sentimental and heartfelt happy birthday goes out to a good friend of the show, Stacy Abrams, American politician from Georgia who made a guest appearance as President of the United Earth in Star Trek Discovery's fourteen episode Coming Home. That's like Emperor of the Known Universe in Dune, essentially, right, I mean the top banana, the whole Sunday and am I'm not mistaken? Didn't Stacy Abrams call into the show one time and just Y her fondits for the way we have reverence for discovery that.
1:07:54 I thought that was like just I was like, what is happening right now? Yeah, I'm just making sure because that's what I remember. But there you go. So happy birthday, Stacy Abrams. Don't give up, don't give up, don't don't surrender, keep keep being who you are and uh and know that there's gratitude out there. Happy birthday to Catherine Black, actress who Played's mother in the Strange New World second season episode ad Astra per Aspera. So there we go, expanding the Una Chinriley family, which, by the way, if you we're going. To review this one of these days, but if you are an Una Chinriley fan, the new book Star Trek Asylum is excellent and it is a Una story, So if you haven't had a chance to read it, I suggest reading it and hopefully in a month or two we'll find a time to do a book nook and we'll review that book. It's it's most excellent.
1:08:51 Is it a comic book with pictures. Eric, this is one of them novels. Oh, I'll take a wow. I'm good at that book learning, but I'll try it for you. There's also a very excellent audiobook adaptation that I would recommend, which only runs it's like eleven hours or something. I never listened to an audio book. I gotta be honest with Well, that's you know, Charles and all the Virtues. Yeah, yeah, I got to hear the voices in my head. Let's get together for a beer, and I gotta tell you on your phone. I've listened to one either, but I have to recommend Patrick Starts to make it so read by the man himself. I'll just read the book. I know i'd hear I know i'd hear him in my head if I read it.
1:09:34 I know I would. Well. The other one that's really good is a Stitch in Time, read by Garrick himself. I mean, that's one of my favor Yeah. I've been trying to pick that up. That's a hard book to find. It's a very difficulty. Audiobook is read by him, so high high secondary value. I just like to seeing him on the shelf, right, you know what I'm saying, moving on with our birthday cavalcade of nonsense, We're saying happy birthday to Hillary Shepherd, who played Hoya in the Deep Space nine fifth season episode of the Ship and later played Lauren in the sixth and seventh season episode Statistical Probabilities and Chrysalis. Happy birth goes out to Liam Hughes, actor who played the young Spock in the Star Trek Discovery second season episodes brother Light and Shadows, and if memory serves so, a lot of Young Spock action there back in the early seasons of Discovery, So I want to go back and watch those early seasons again, especially season one and season two.
1:10:39 I think those were for me when I was the show was just really doing a lot of cool stuff, really enjoyed that a lot. Happy birthday is it today? It is today? Today is our good friend. Machen Ahmik's birthday December twelfth, actress who played the teenage form of the being known as Anya in the Next Generation second season episode The Dove Fan. Though moving TV fans of a certain vintage are going to recognize miss Amic from her work in the various iterations of the Twin Peaks franchise, amongst other works. She works a lot, and it's done a lot, but twin peaks, officionados tend to be long lived and keep track of all these, so a lot of stuff there, But that's definitely where she was really ubiquitous for a while, and super happy to be able to wish a happy birthday to this last person on my list, maybe not quite yet a household name, but a household name in my household, the delightfully wonderful and talented Gabrielle Ruiz, whose birthday is also today. Happy birthday, Gabrielle Ruiz. Why am I celebrating her so enthusiastically well, because she is the actress who courses tillin It's family program, be respectful to our lovely guests Uncle Jip, regardless of their melons. But she's the one who voices to LN
1:12:11 and a lot of other anciliary characters when in need of a paycheck on lower decks. And as I said earlier in the show, a tellin episode is a good episode. I think pretty much that has been proven to be true for me in these last couple of seasons. Every time her character is on there and plays like a substantial part of the story or the plot I just feel she nails it and brings that the right vibe and kind of gets everybody else to kind of sing at her level, if you will, so, really big fan. I I know that supposedly this is the last Lower Deck season, right, but I still have hoped that somehow somebody else will pick it up and do something with it.
1:12:54 But I cannot be done with that character. I need no more of Lynn. We have seen in the past live action iterations of Star Trek Lower Deck characters appearing on strange New worlds. I don't know if we would see that again, but man, I'd love to see to Lynn do that and pull that off. And I think that would be a really cool thing. So happy Birthday to all you December Maven's and mad Men, wherever you may be. I hope you're hoisting your favorite Syntha Hall or or regular hall and doing it up like you should.
1:13:34 And now I'm going to take this sharpened batleath from out between my butt cheeks and pass it over to Uncle Jim. You're the one who just said family show. Yeah, I was about to say, everybody wants. To I'm trying to keep you on your toes, right if the show become Eric, this show becomes predicted. Well we're sunk. Well the red one will obey all rules. Oh wow, that's gonna short circuit everything. We got to keep them wondering what's going to happen this week? Oh my god, you hear what the guy said? Holy yeah, yeah, remember that night I lot up the gynecological chart during the episode in like late January of twenty five. I remember that, and it was amazing. You start talking all about like, uh, doctor Crusher and the ghost candle. It was crazy. I never knew that we'd ever ever have a show like that. So good stuff, all right, Uncle Jim, to batlet is yours?
1:14:36 Well, you know when I go to conventions and I waved my batlets around, everybody wants to touch it. But I don't think they're don't want to touch it anymore. They know where it's been. There's not a lot of chairs here. Eric got to touch it though. I have Jim's batlet, and I'm not admit it. He did. I think we have a picture of you holding it, nonetheless, don't we subscribers. Yeah, that's channel write that down up. Okay, Oh boy, well guys, Uh, I only have two birthdays, but I take the best because I can. So you know, first of all, I want to say Happy birthday to Rex Holeman. And you're saying, geez, uncle Jim, who the hell is Rex Holman and why would you do his birthday? Well, I'm about to tell you because Rex Holman was in what I think is one of the best Star Trek movies.
1:15:39 And I'm not kidding. Yes, if you guys have ever listened to the podcast, uh, you know that I'm talking about Star Trek five The Final Frontier. I truly love that movie. You know, we had the opportunity to talk to Cybach himself. It was great. And Rex Holman was in Star Trek the Final Frontier. He play John, who was the hairless, toothless dude that shows up at the beginning of the movie who's drilling for holes in the sand. But I think most people would know him from his Star Trek the Original series third season episode Specter of the Gun where he plays Morgan or so, Happy birthday to Rec's Holman. And of course this is the coup d'ta right here of Klingon's the one, the only, the man. Uh.
1:16:29 The reason why I'm into Star Trek as much as I am because of him, and we want to say God blah and Happy birthday to Michael Dorn, mister Klingon himself. And I don't need to tell you about him because you already know who he is. But I remember watching TNG the very first episode, Encounter Farpoint, and when I saw a Klingon on the bridge of the Enterprise. That was it. I was sold. They had me at Klingon and uh, that's all it took, you know. I was just hooked because here's the mortal enemies of the Federation and the dude is on the bridge of the flagship. I got to get to know this guy and I fell in love with it, and I've been a kling On waving my battlet around ever since that time. So happy birthday to Michael Doran. And I do have to tell you Michael Doran's story. Of course, what would it be without Uncle Jim's long on the tooth stories. So I was dressed up as Michael Doran at a Star Trek convention in Buffalo back in the early nineties, and this woman was stalking stalking us and it was pretty scary. Actually, if we get on the elevator, She gets on the elevator, We get off the elevator, she gets off the elevator.
1:17:40 Finally she comes up, taps me on the shoulder and says, I know who you are. You're that guy from Star Trek. You're that Klingon guy. And I said, no, no, I'm not. She says, yeah, yeah, yeah, you're that Wharf guy. My husband loves you, and she has me sign a picture for her husband to Bill Wharf. So I I've only signed one autograph in my life, and it was that one. And somewhere in Buffalo, New York, there's a dude named Bill with a picture of Wharf on the wall signed by me. Maybe when Trek Talking takes off and truly is international, more people will want my autographer. Right now, the lady Stalker from Buffalo is the only one who asked me for an autograph. So there you have it.
1:18:27 Happy birthday to Michael Dorn And without any further ado, you know what time it is now, that's right, it's time for Star Trek News and Eric has our first story. This is my favorite segment of the news section, which, of course, says Shatner says, because Shetner's always got something that he's got to say that you know, may come out of left field. You never know. Forty five years ago, William Shatner was sure that Star Trek the Motion Picture would fail. Star Trek has definitely lived long and prospered. Though the original series' late sixties run only lasted three seasons and was canceled due to low ratings, reruns when into syndication around the world, earning the show legions of fans who clamored for more, and on December seventh, nineteen seventy nine, they got Star Trek the Motion Picture, which is now celebrating its forty fifth anniversary. The film marked the first of several big screen adventures for Captain Kirk's Bock and the crew of the USS Enterprise, and despite a number of problems, including a script that was not completed until production was already well underway and mixed critical reviews, when the film was released, it helped reinvigorate the franchise, leading to multiple sequels and spinoffs that have become a cultural phenomenon. When William Shatner attended the world premiere of the film, he was not exactly optimistic about its success, seeing the completed movie for the first time. Shatner was struck by its slow pace and thought it marked the
1:19:57 end of the Star Trek journey. He famously remarked, well, that's it. We give it our best shot. It wasn't good, and it will never happen again. He recalled his initial reaction fifteen years later and added, shows. You what I know. So you know, originally I didn't think it was going to go anywhere, but of course it has. And I think now and like, it's my personal opinion that the motion picture has achieved cult status. It's definitely one that, like, you either really like that movie or you really dislike that movie. And I think very few people are sort of on the fence about that. A lot of it has to do with the pacing and the fact that it's made sort of like a late sixties movie instead of a late seventies movie, given that, you know, movies like Star Wars had come out two years before this and been all about the action and stuff. So and now I think people find it a breath of fresh air and when they're kind of going back to those old tos days. You know, everybody's watched Wrath of con a million times. Everybody's watched Star Trek four a million times?
1:21:05 How many times have people watched the motion picture? I think it's it's become more interesting to people as time has gone by, and uh, you know, I've gotten the opportunity to see it on the big screen here in uh in Portland, and it's it's pretty cool on the big screen, Like that's really the way that movie was meant to be seen. So if you can't see it on the big screen, just sit really really close to your television and check out the new four K director's cut because it is. Ritual screen and see it. You'll get a good saying. I think at sixty or seventy in screen, it was poorgeous, you. Know, I think Eric, I think that it has the best opening sequence of any movie. You know, when you start off with the with the theme song and all the names going by, and then we have that famous quing on March theme song and the beautiful incredible klingon battle cruisers that lets you know right then and there what you were going to be expecting, and that Star Trek was back. It was real and it was looking real good on the big screen. So that that opening sequence is incredible and Mark Leonard as the Klingon Commander just awesome. Okay, so Charles gets our next story here.
1:22:25 Charles Georgia to be told. A Section thirty one comic book tie in Any of You is announced first merchandise tie in for Section thirty one movie, with what they're describing as exciting single issue spin off comic books. Set to be released. Fert details on it are a good stand right now. But here is this snopch just from IDW The issue of. Features Empy phill up at Georgio and a brand new an exhilarating adventure is possible. The new comic will help you some of the blanks, notably what has happened at Georgio between when she left, which she was last seen traveling behind back in time in the thirty second century and Star Trek Discovery season three and the events of the new movie set in the Lost Years in the early twenty fourth century. The new book is being written by Alissa Wong in her first Star Trek outing, coming from Star Wars Doctor Alpra for Marvel and Spirit.
1:23:36 World for DC. Art is being done by Megan Levins, who. Is working on Starture comics for a decade, including the most recently IDW's ongoing Star Trek series. The comic is priced five ninety nine, and you can reserve a copy now at t FAW with a fewer discount of price of four nineteen, and also reserve a copy of the b post. Or cover variant. Sure I think thirty one where premiere Friday, January twenty fourth, twenty twenty five, exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US and international markets where service is available. If there's anything compared to what we saw, this car very much looking Forda's comic book, because those of us that god chance to see the Percard prequel to the Percard series and read the novel, really we're ready for the series and had a good feel what was going on before the story started.
1:24:37 Would you agree, Eric, Well, oh. Yeah, absolutely. I really like these kind of show tie in one shots that give you just a little bit of information about the either the before or the after, and we've had a few of these in Star Trek along the way, and you know, I'm obviously, like I'm like many of you here, we're all going to get in the comics when they come out, So I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Hopefully we can review that on a future comic corner once we get up and running fully. Well, we're gonna stay with the Section thirty one news right now. Michelle Yo gets back into action in Star Trek's Section thirty one. Paramount Plus has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming Star Trek spinoff movie, premiering, as Charles just said on Friday, January twenty fourth, twenty twenty five, which is a shame because our podcast is on Thursday, which means we have to wait a whole week unless we do a special show.
1:25:33 But I'll deal with my co host with that later. With Oscar Award winning Michelle Yo reprising her Discovery role as Emperor Philippa Giorgio, Giorgio finds herself joining a Black Ops Starfleet division on secret spies known as Section thirty one, along with a ragtag bunch of operatives. Craig Sweeney pen the movie, which was directed by Altunde Osami, and two served as EPs alongside Yo, Alex Kurtzman, Aaron Byers, Frank Scucco, John Webber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth and without any further Ado hit it David.
1:26:16 There's a customer, hope it for a word with you? Bring him? What are you doing in my space station? I'm giving you a chance to get back in on the actually on a galactic scale. What a cute idea. The only way this works is if I know exactly what I'm dealing with. We're facing a threat unlike anything Starfleet's ever seen. Billions of lives are at stake. Gather your people, who are going to need every one of them. Thirty one is a black Ops division.
1:26:57 Spy work was just a place for people to Then the moves start lad this year to make sure noone commits murder. Whatever you believe your mission was, it's worse than you thought. How do we stop it? Work together? Then? Don't get dead. I'll try my hurtest. You. Ready, let's get messing. You don't answer her questions directly, she will punch. You in your face. What you said that she was gonna be doing a face?
1:27:37 You have no idea what you've started. This is gonna be bad. One we survived together. M hm. All right, So guys, what do you think about actually physically being able to watch the video versus just hearing it? I think David did a great job of getting that up there. David, thank you so much. Yeah, it's really cool. Like I think all of the visual stuff is just really it's gonna be a podcast better.
1:28:18 Yeah, I think it's going to really improve everything tremendously. David is themand I'm going to get him a box of donuts for sure, maybe some moldy cheese. I'll send you ideas on where to get the good donuts in Portland. There we go. So section thirty one, we got the comic book, and now we got the trailer which just dropped and I wanted to take a minute to talk about it here. So the last time. I'm a little bit confused. Maybe my co host can help me out here. But in season two of Discovery, end of season one, wasn't Georgio invited to join Section thirty one when she was given the black and silver badge by what's his face there?
1:29:01 That turned you whose name I can't remember who? Leland? Wasn't she invited to join Leland to join and she was with Ash Tyler in Section thirty one at the end of season two of Discovery. The Discovering Crew, I mean, when she disappeared in time she was no longer than a part of section thirty one at that time period. So I'm thinking, and again I might be overthinking this, but I think when Carl aka the Guardian of Forever sends her back where she can be more useful. I'm trying to figure out where in the starts your timeline does this fit in. Is this after Discovery or before?
1:29:45 Like has Discovery art has Discovery left and come to the future, and this is and she's been left in. The past of the Enterprise c in one point, Yes. Rachel Garrett, Yes, you see Rachel Garrett in see right. Okay. I mean some people on Reddit and that sort of thing have said that they feel like it's supposed to be set in the early twenty three thirties. Okay, I'm just trying to trying to wrap my head around it. And we do get to see a share on in this episode, which has been a lot of people have been going crazy about that. For you people that don't know, that was the half black, half white race that we saw on TOS that was supposedly wiped out.
1:30:33 But again, you know, who's to say that some of them didn't get off the planet. We know a lot of Vulcans got off a Vulcan before it was destroyed, So this character that we see could just be one of them that escaped the devastation. You know, we don't really know. We don't have a lot. This trailer doesn't really give us a lot of information. We do know that Michelle Yo is going to be kicking some serious which she does the best. You know, when she kicks Lurca in the face and he's standing behind her in season one. I always am amazed with that. But we don't really know a lot about this. The trailer doesn't show us a lot. We do know from the teaser trailer, though, that there is going to be a lot of stuff with young Georgio. And if you guys remember in Discovery, when she goes back in time with Carl, she has a lot of emotions about sacrificing or well, we don't know if she sacrificed him, but I think it's her son.
1:31:32 Maybe they don't really tell you who it is, but she has regrets about what happened to either her son or her brother somebody in the past. And one of the early trailers that we saw last year, they showed her as young Georgio with the blood on her boots, So I'm hoping that maybe they explore her background a little bit more, which I think they will. But it was a weird looking space station too. It didn't look like Deep Space nine. It was a weird looking station and I can't really say too much about it because they didn't show us much. But I am looking forward to it, I really really am. Last time we saw Georgio in Section thirty one, she was preventing to kling On Empire from crumbling when Cole Shah tried to take over from Laurel and ash Tyler, and she showed up and kicked all their asses and stopped that from happening.
1:32:28 That's the last time we saw her her in action with Section thirty one. So yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with this myself. And being a movie, it's got to start out. It's got to be quick, it's got to be sweetened to the point. They're not going to have a lot of time to fool around on a lot of backstory stuff. They got to get right in, get right out, and it's got to be visually stunning if it's going to keep pace with what we see in the movies today. So I'm looking forward to it. I'm hearing a lot of fans that are already, you know, pooh poohing on it, but not me. I'm not one of them. I want to see it. I love Michelle Yo, and I'm looking forward to it myself.
1:33:09 So what are you going to be? Twenty three thirties this was John's Picard and his twenties. This would be when just out of starfleet. This is an. Early star trek. This is this is a little definitely a big hole in time frame because if I look at at a timeline. Twenty two to ninety three is undiscovered country. Jhonath's Picard is born in twenty three h five, and the Enterprise I see it destroy in twenty three forty four. Then we hit TG in twenty three sixty four.
1:33:49 We've got a big hole in time here that we don't know much details on. It's a good filler spot to what's going on in start in the Earth such at that time period. Absolutely a lot of stuff that they could could cover for us. What about you, Paul, what do you think? I try to be cautiously optimistic until i've seen, you know, seen the material, right. I mean making trailers for a TV movie is a very specific act, right, a very specific craft or purpose. It's not like making a movie.
1:34:30 It's it's marketing, it's advertising. And yeah, style and preferences are a little subjective. Right. When you were reading your article there, you mentioned the director oldatunde Osunsanmi. Right, Well, that gentleman has done a ton of Discoveries, Okay, a ton, and I think a couple of Strange New Worlds as well, but mostly i've seen his name on disc right, So as you can see in this, you're getting a really similar look to Discovery, right, a lot of kind of flashiness. I it's the tone isn't what I expected from I mean back in you know, through all the iterations that we've ever heard of. Section thirty one, I mean, they're they're painted is a very dark organization, you know, kind of a black ops type thing kind of I was expecting when I first heard that they were going to do this picture, right, or originally it was a series and they were going to go, Okay, well maybe not a series, because but we'll let you do a movie.
1:35:37 And I don't know if that's a good sign, right, because It's like if you originally thought you were going to be a series and then they're relegating you to just one movie. I think it's kind of like, well, let's see how this does kind of a thing, right, and then it's a wait and see and they're going to give you a shot. But it doesn't project a lot of confidence, right, And I think that they're getting a little nervous in terms of like fan reaction to some of the things that they've done in the last few years. Right. So I'm hopeful it's good, but I expected something that was a lot darker, more of like a you know, like a Mission Impossible or a Captain America Winter Soldier, you know, a darker conspiracy thriller kind of thing. But when you know, I'm getting all this flashy nightclub nonsense, right, I mean immediately, I'm back with all the the nightclub nonsense that we had in la like the last Star Wars movie, right, Rise of Skywalker, there was so much crazy.
1:36:44 It seems to be a thing that you have right now with a lot of fictional shows. Oh there's to be exciting nightclub scene, right, because well, who's writing this stuff? Right? Where are they getting the whole idea that that is what the audience. I never see a nightclub in Star Trek. That's fine, I don't understand why the urgency to make sure that you're seeing it in due prophecy right now as well, where they sort of feel we need to appeal to the younger folks who go out and drink a lot. We're gonna, you know, have an exciting scene in a nightclub. It looks really cool, and we'll have a close up of someone's exotic looking shoes, no fellas. I mean, I want to like it. I hope it's good, but based on the footage I'm seeing here, I'm a little reluctant. It's just not a very good trailer. It doesn't look like a very good story to me. I mean, I'm hopefully I want to be wrong, and like I like I said, this is the trailer. I'm not judging the finished product because I haven't seen the finished product, right, I'm just judging what I have and what I've seen here.
1:37:45 But I'm hesitant. I'm a little nervous. This doesn't look like what I would expect the section thirty one movie to look like. Eric, help me out, what do you think I'm an old man yelling at clouds over here? Now, is that who I am? Or do you have a similar vibe? Well, I mean I think I think cautious optimism is a great like phrase to sort of start out with. I mean, I am I glad that this was made. Yes, am I glad that Michelle Yo is in it. Absolutely like she's freaking amazing right and she's like at the top of her game right now too, which so it's special to still have her as part of the Star Trek universe, even though she's kind of like almost even bigger than the moment. So so that I'm excited about I you know, I have some of the same misgivings that that that Paul has with just with the trailer, and this is like so but okay, let me back up.
1:38:51 It's not just the trailer. The concept of this show or what became a movie, I think from the beginning has made me a little bit uncomfortable, like the times that well, so the most deep Space or the most uh section thirty one that we ever got was on Deep Space nine, right, And in that one, it was kind of like these these side stories that were happening along the way that allowed character development of characters like Basher and that sort of thing, while plugging into concepts of the Dominion war and kind of secrecy and all that kind of stuff. So Section thirty one was kind of a vehicle to tell different parts of those stories that were part of kind of a larger hole. What we've done now is we've taken our focus and we've pinpointed and we've laser focused on something that is supposed to be secret. And so I'm kind of with Paul, my expectation would be, then, Okay, it is going to be mission impossible. It's going to be super secret, like there's going to be like undercover stuff. And the trailer reads as action, action action, which I get, like you got to have that in the movies and that sort of thing. But I hope that it doesn't lose its star trek soul, and I'm hoping that it doesn't do what it could potentially do, which is glorify things like like the concept of I have power over you and therefore I can do what I want. You know, there's
1:40:22 like a fine line, I think in section thirty one between I'm helping the good guys and I'm an absolute fascist and you know Georgeau, I mean Emperor Georgeou we already know, has a history of committing genocide. And yes, she went through kind of a character reformation and she's a different person now, thank you, Michael Burnham. But there's just a little bit of danger in that, kind of like glorification of fascism in it. So anyway, I'm excited about it. I'm gonna watch it. I am not saying that it's going to be terrible. The trailer does not totally make me have warm fuzzies in my belly, So that's my opinion. Okay, David, you get to bring up the caboose on this one, buddy.
1:41:04 Oh uh yeah. It was the first time watching it, to be honest, it's a lot to take in. That's wait a minute, what about all the all the hours we spent setting this all up and getting the timing right. I didn't actually watch it all the way through. That's fair, that's fair. But yeah, so the beginning and the end I did see, but the middle part was a little too much to take in all at once, and it was like I am kind of in the boat with uh Eric and Paul Hughe the fact that it doesn't really give me, you know, the one fudgy feelings, and I'm hoping that they don't destroy it. The last section thirty one preview that they did like what a couple several months ago that didn't really connect with me at all. I was a little I was scared for the franchise, to be honest, hoping that this done good. But yeah, like Paul said, I'm gonna be optimistically uh castrous, So well, we'll see, would go. I mean coming out in January twenty fourth is not that far from yeah, right about another month's show.
1:42:15 But right around the corner. Yeah, hoping that that's good. Uh, it seems like they're bringing back a lot of uh nochealdic like that what do you call him? The show on or something? Yeah, I mean it. Does really well because I'd love to see them make more one shot movies based on different concepts. That would be that would be super cool. Yeah, I mean, who knows they could end up turning this into a TV series. Wow, Michelle yo I is a very high commodity. I don't know if they could afford her. For a TV series characters or something. Yeah, maybe I was kind. Of hoping we would see ash Tyler, that was what we were originally told, but it's maybe we're not going to see him.
1:42:58 Well, I mean the trailer doesn't reveal everything, of course, I mean, yeah, yeah. Caul said that he hasn't been able to see the whole material, so he can't really put a finger on it, you know whatever. But to me, I'm in the same boat. It's just just a material that we see right here that is just not the whole picture. And they might end up putting in characters like what Charles Wood mentioning, you know, this is a timeline where if it is going to be set in the twenty three thirties, what if we do see a young Captain Picard or something. No, maybe he's off gets mentioned or something and off with his ship that he had, the Stargazer. So, I mean, the Strait is supposed to be the Enterprise she which is the technically the flagship at that time for the Federation, and once she gets destroyed, if Chexta thirty one has anything to do with it, how it got destroyed.
1:43:55 Well, I wonder if they'll actually bring the Enterprise see into this movie. Is that I mean, is Rachel Garrett in this movie. Is that? Yeah, that's definitely they actually bring the enterprise scene in that would be. And I think that these I think the scenes that they show us might actually be on Georgia's space station. Maybe it's not clear. Yeah, anyway, I am really curious though, who is that bang looking character? I mean, well, so there was a guy from wasn't it the motion parture from Star Trek six that the s gameloid the woman.
1:44:37 H David's talking about the guy with the machines on his head. There was a guy from like motion picture something that hades on machines on his head like that one there, Because I remember the first time I ever saw him, I thought of that guy from Star Wars that has the the like metal thing that kind of comes. With yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, he's one of the rag tag misfits that they like, like, you know, it's just like that to me. It does not if you say, who is hey, Paul, what are the folks at section thirty one? Like? Right, I'm picturing like you know CI agents, right, or you know the equivalent right of like you know, time traveling cats, right. The most elite of the elite of the elite of the finally tuned machine. That is the secret you know, control entities of Starfleet, right, the ones who are running without really any yeah, and the ones who do the thing that nobody else does but but highly elite forces. Right. That does not sound like rag tag misfits, right, And it is not sounds like a bunch of like, you know, are we getting Police Academy or are we getting you know, section thirty one? Which is it? Right? So, I don't know, I worry this is going to be like one of those uh, you know what was that weird Netflix movie Jim from uh that was very Star Wars couple of.
1:46:00 Oh uh. Yeah, I worry we're going down that road, right, sort of like flashy and nonsensical and and not a lot of great you know director. Right. So, like part of me is like, Okay, the director of this thing is amazing, and the star is amazing. So if the writing is halfway decent and it's all about is it Star Trek or is it a Star Trek universe Star Wars movie, that's the. Question for me. That's what I'm really worried about myself, because if they change the flavor it's going, I might actually spit it out. Maybe maybe, I mean, is it okay to have like one Star Wars the Star Trek thing.
1:46:48 Yeah, kind of got jj Abra movie that would kind of more of a. Wars through line of the like teamwork, and I mean there was more action, but I don't. Yeah, I'm not averse to action. I just I would like it if that, you know, whatever this story ends up being, and we don't really know, we don't, it'll be some kind of threat, you know, and it'll be some kind of thing. But whatever it is, right, you know, the whole universe will be in peril, right, because that's what they do at Paramount. Yeah, you can't just be a little threat regular Company. Every atom of molecules must be right. I just want this whatever version of section thirty one we're getting, I want it to align and fit with the versions of this organization we've been talked told about previous episodes like guy. Yeah, yeah, exactly. I mean it should fit, right. You should sort of morally questionable people who do you know, stuff that that most people should not know about.
1:47:45 Not glorified, but who believe that they are doing the right thing every single time. And the one liners and quips for God's sake, keep it to a minimum. And that is the trailer, so hopefully. The one thing I do like about this trailer is that it brings everybody together to talk about it. So we're doing we are. Doing that, yeah, And you know, it's fun to think about it, right, We don't know, right, and it's and it's just like you know, and and if some people have like a lot of caution at first, and one person's really enthusiastic, right, that makes for a good conversation. It just gets things going right, and we're really curious. So we're more invested in watching it now than before. It makes. So far, all we've seen is her briefly walking in the desert with a sword overhead, stepping in a puddle of blood, could be anything, and then a bunch of fight scenes in a bar. That's all we've seen. We don't haven't seen anything about the story or this big threat or nothing, so they're keeping it under wraps. So I'm looking forward to it.
1:48:41 And deep down, once we find out who's real real pushing it behind the curtain, it's just a giant triple. That could be or a giant donut. Giant donut and I believe, I believe that Paul has our final story. Yes, Paul has our last story of the of the evening. So take it away, Paul. All right, Well, if you're working in Hollywood and the creative endeavors, you're hoping it eventually you'll get acknowledged for your work. And what better way to get acknowledged and be acknowledged by your peers. And it is delightful to be able to say that the Star Trek, Discovery and Lower Decks have both been nominated for Saturn Awards, because as we turned into the Caboose at the end of the year. Here as we wrap up twenty twenty four, we're heading into awards season and things are kicking off for Star Trek with the final seasons of two shows picking up Saturn Award nominations, while Discovery and Lower Decks are being recognized that franchise isn't getting the kind of love from the Sunns and hasn't previous years. What's more of going on there? The nominations for the fifty second annual Saturn Awards were announced by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. Since nineteen seventy two, the Saturn Awards have been recognizing extraordinary programming, performances and special effects in genre entertainment.
1:49:53 That would be your science fiction, fantasy and horror sean. This year, Star Trek brought in two nominations. Trek Discovery was nominated for its fifth and final season for Best Science Fiction Television Series. It's going up against three Body Problem though that was a big one. Ahsoka over there on Disney, The The Arc which I don't know, Dark Matter, and Fallout, which is done pretty well. Last year, the third and final season of Star Trek Picard won this award because season three was pretty great. We lost several others. All four previous seasons of Discovery were nominated for Best Streaming Media Television Series, and the first two seasons one how about that now? Star Trek Lower Decks was nominated for Best Animated Television Series for its fifth and final season maybe final season on Paramount Plus. Maybe there will be another season someplace else, Let's hope. All right, I'm looking at you, Dealynn. It's competing with Batman, Cape Crusader, Gremlin's The Wild Batch, Kaiju Number eight, Star Wars, The Bad Batch, and X Men ninety seven Snickety Snick Lower Decks was nominated last year as well, but lost out to Bad Batch Were Were There were no other nominations for Star Trek this year. Last year, the franchise picked up fifteen nominations across the Card, Lower Decks, Strange, New Worlds, and Home Media. The total nominations is the fewest for the franchise during the new Paramount plus Star Trek TV era starting in twenty eighteen, when Discovery picked up six
1:51:23 nominations for its first season winning too. The Saturn Awards ceremony will be held on February second, twenty twenty five, at the Hilton Universal City Hotel. When in luxurious downtown Los Angeles stay at the Hilton Universal City Hotel. It will be streamed live on Electric Entertainment's Electric Now platform. Sorry, say does that need batteries? Does anyone have ever heard of that? Yeah? I would say no to that. And on the Roku channel, which I think is still out there next to AOL right and all are. I pressed the Roku channel that it takes like a couple of minutes, but he does something the.
1:52:04 Same use to power data is dead? Right? Isn't that how it works? I'm pretty sure that. I'm sorry. Isn't it great to give me a news story? Isn't that? Isn't that just? What's even better is seeing your face while you read it. That's my favorite. Well I like this new video thing, I really do. It's it's and all the stuff David did, and I feel like we're hanging out in the bar together, right, and we're a little looser. I think it's. Yeah, so I have a serious this article though, Yeah, bro, Yeah, So Star Trek Discovery was nominated for its fifth and final season, So that didn't come out in the last year, right, am I misremembering things? Is Star Trek Discovery's fifth season?
1:52:52 When did that come out? Well? When did it come out? Or when was it done? Because remember the when did it finish? Oh? Was it this? Yeah? Not too long ago? Okay, so I think it was like at the beginning of this year. It kind of seems like it would have been nominated for this this cycle, right. That's what I'm just it just felt like it was longer ago, and so I got a little confused when it was more with more contemporary things like three Body Problems just came out a few months ago or you know. Okay, okay, Well, remember they finished it and then they canceled it, and then they went back and refilmed the ending and we had to wait a long time. That's right in the final episode of the of the finale series. Finale aired on May thirtieth, twenty twenty four.
1:53:34 So just this last minute. Okay. So you'd think it would be among these nominations, right because this is the current cycle, but it was not. Yeah. So I don't know, it's a little too bad because the fifth season was. Good. Good, like there's some good stuff in there. Yeah, yeah, it was. It was. It was better than three. Yeah. Yeah, I don't even know what it was. Yeah, we could do a whole thing. Talking about we can talk about that sometimes. Anybody else, is anybody else trying to endure doing prophecies or just me? It's just. Yeah, I am.
1:54:15 I love those those doing movies. I love those first two doing movies, The Death. I think they're brilliant and I had high hopes for this thing, but man, it is just like a snoozefest is just tedious and. Well Patrick start there is Gurney. Yeah, you know, sure, Sean Young is looking for work. I mean she bring her out. But yeah, it's just I've had such high hopes for it, and I'm just like, you know, boy, it's it's a slog fellas. Sorry. Well yeah, oh well it was fun. And you know what I say, I say, to hell with our old platform, uh you know, with the blog talk radio, you know, and uh you know to us, Yeah yeah, long what you used to say in the Roman times death to like long live the Emperor or whatever. But yeah, but this new platform is great. I really like it. It's fun, it's engaging, and kudos to David and Jim for putting all these visuals together.
1:55:16 It's did a hell of a job. Yeah. I don't know you can keep this up every week? My god, you know, but but I surely you over time, right, you know, we all figure it out, right, every week, got of gram stuff in. But it's great. I really think. It's just it sounds so much better. The audio quality is just so much better difference. Yeah, yeah, right, So I'm really glad this worked out. It seems it seems like a wonderful, nice turn of events. So you guys like the video and the pictures and stuff, and we'll keep this format. I can't wait to see what the what it looks like on the tail end. I mean, yeah, I'm very curious. This is all kind of an experiment for us.
1:55:56 It's a little weird, right Whenever you'd play a trailer something and we were just hearing it, and it's just like people can't see it, right, And now now you play a trailer or footage, you can see it. I think it's great, so really really. Nice, and I got I can't say enough. David did a great job with all of this. We've been talking on the Phony spot every every night this week, right David every night? Yeah. Yeah, I just wanted to make sure I got it all in order because I didn't really chee. I couldn't see the list that we were reading off of. But I was like, okay, so we got to do this one to know what it furched, and in this one and then that probably I don't know how long did it take, Like maybe an hour?
1:56:37 Yeah, But I think it came out well and I think we'll stick with it. I hope the fans like it. I got to tell you though, the podcast is going to come out as an audio only on Spotify and iTunes and all that stuff. The video stuff that we're filming. I'm gonna have to mess around with that, set it all up, and we'll probably release that, maybe on Charles's new Patreon channel. When we get that set up. Maybe I'll put some snippets on YouTube, maybe Facebook if they ever get our page fixed. I haven't decided what we're going to do with the video yet. But how YouTube gets crazy hits, I mean it's just I mean, that's just like you want to build an audience, man, YouTube is nuts. It really gets a following. So if we want to grow back the audience we lost off of the first hit to the first Facebook group, I mean, that's a quick way to do it.
1:57:29 Yeah, so we might we might go to YouTube. The web page. I think that'll get us some interest, and the and the Patreon so those links in there and they get attention to all that. So we're going to keep the format. I think it worked out great and I'm happy with it. So. Oh so, if we get any kind of block from YouTube, there's always another free feet platform where called Rumble. I don't know if you guys ever heard of that, but they're more open to allowing people to just post pretty much whatever they want. And it's exactly like YouTube, but it's more open for stuff. So just in case we like get you know, blocked from YouTube for some reason, I don't know why we would, but a lot of.
1:58:17 It comes in copyrighted, but you're allowed to use it. I've got some stuff on my channel that is allowed of that material. Okay, so guys, next week we're going to be talking about the what's the next episode Upper Decks. We're going to be talking about Yes this is Yes, there we go, There we go. He's gotta do this thing. See, David's on the ball here. He's more on the ball than I am. He's got a thousand more. So next week we'll be talking about Upper Decks. And we've got some stories about a lady in New York who's been getting tickets in Long Island matter of fact, because of her license plate. I wonder what that could be. And Captain Janeway Kate mullgrew herself was rallying for some characters on Voyager, but she was overturned. We're going to talk about that a little bit as well. And I think we have another Voyager story that we put in, Yeah, we do.
1:59:22 We have another one that I put in there just for well, either be Paul or Eric about the possibility of Kate Willgrew coming back doing a live action Janeway's story similar to what we saw with the cards. So we'll also have our fan shout outs and our Star Trek birthdays. So next week's going to be a lot of fun, and we're going to have our wonderful video by David, So we'll have our slide shows and stuff going on, So you guys definitely want to tune in for that. Make sure you check out our Facebook page and leave a message for Tim Ross. He's going to be on the seventeenth, so you got some time come up with your question. I just go there to Truck Talking dot Com, click on the blue microphone which is in the bottom right hand corner, and leave us a message and we will play your message for Tim and have it answered right here on the podcast. So, guys, without any further ado, I'm your most excellent host, Uncle Jim.
2:00:18 Just letting everybody know please stay safe and be good to each other, and always remember Star Trek fans are the best. Paling frequencies are closed. Good night, everybody. Hey, y'all, he's not really human. He's an alien under that
