I'm gonna be up in the northeast part of the country. Oh my gosh, and there Charles. Anyway, that's my big plan for next week. So I'll still I'll still be on the show next week, but I'll be broadcasting from some city in the northeast. It's where it was cold and crappy and snowing. Perhaps perhaps, Yeah, all. Got to see some really great new upcoming movie trailers for things to look forward to later in the year, which kind of makes you feel like maybe there will see still be some normal eventually.

So when I was kind of in a dark place this week, as many folks might relate to, I found that there was a little bit of hope thanks to Hollywood. So grateful for that. DNG The Bonding Season three, episode five, The Rizia i cling On's Rusty Rizti was a Klingon ritual of bonding in which two Klingons are joined together to come brothers, which is the same ceremony we see in this episode in three hundred Nights Discovery. This is a little flip in here, but when they were on the charts and they mentioned the v Navar. I was like, that sounds very familiar, and I looked it up. It's like ah, Discovery Unification three, Season three, episode seven, Navar formally known as Vulcan till after the Burn. So this was the new planet, new name of the planet after the Burn, which is why it sounded familiar. When we got into the shuttle landing, I said, I am not even going to try looking that up because that's too many different episodes that you could hit with people trying to land shuttles. And then

16:43 I looked at the city they went down to and two things kind of got reminded me of Pericard Start Us RAG season one, episode five, and the episode seventeen second season three, episode three, and of course Jim from seventeen seconds. Jim always loves one of the quotes from that movie, which was the beheadings are on Wednesday. But that's kind of reminded me of what this city look like. It's those from those couple of those episodes. And then there was an interesting one in here Discovery Red Directive and Under the Twin Moon season five, episodes one and two.

17:35 In there they had a planet a Kumal. It was a large settlement frequently by couriers. The residents uses sand runners to travel the planet's desert terrain in which and why am I using that reference? Well, that's because our captain decided to Paul Aquamal, so that's actually referencing this planet. But that's taking a ship close to the surface bypassing its natural field, and that is what I picked up from this episode. So I think Paul would love to discuss this episode.

18:25 Thank you, Charles. Well, this is the part of the show, folks where we typically kind of frame things up for our discussion with a brief recap and summary of what happened in this episode. And as we mentioned earlier on, this is a episode called the three hundredth Night. This is the penultimate episode of this first season of Starfleet Academy. Things begin. Three hundred to Night is a big celebration. The USS Athena is traveling debates ed the new seat of the Federation government, and as Charles already mentioned, jad En and Dreima are performing the USA Klingon bonding ritual kind of the years wrapping up, right, so they're kind of solidifying their family bond. Meanwhile, what does that sound?

19:16 Is it an unmuted sound? Is it like traffic? I don't know what that was. Meanwhile, yeah, it was distracting. Meanwhile, Caleb has made it discovered with Sam right where he's finally cracked this old encryption and discovered years and years of hidden messages from his mother Anishamir, of course, to be prolayed by Tatiana Maslani, and she is hiding out on this you know, kind of trader's market on the planet Ukek, which is supposedly about to be annexed by the Venaria Ral. He is unable to get any help due to this federation wide lockdown. So what do you do when start, when you can't do the stuff that is getting in your way and you don't seem to have any other options. You steal a starship? God damn it, because that's what always we've learned in these last two or three iterations of the franchise. You just steal something.

20:15 So Caleb steals a shovel to go rescue his mom, and he is joined by Sam, somewhat intoxicated drem and Genesis Lithe, who basically is kidnapped by Sam to keep her from reporting on them is what I took away. So they're on their way to try to find Caleb's mom, who they've finally got in contact with. Meanwhile, Admiral Vance informs ana Ake that noose Braka has stolen these Omega forty seven molecules, this synthetic, highly destructive varigant of the Omega molecule that I believe we learned about in Voyager on an episode called the Omega Directive. If I'm not mistaken, I'm sure that Eric will correct me. But I believe that's correct.

Caleb reunites with his mom in the crazy black Market market, but the group is soon discovered by Venari raw soldiers. Oh no, and there's a firefight and lots of things, and Anisia is shot. Oh dear uh. Chancellor Oke defies orders, though, and she brings the Athena into the planet's atmosphere. As Charles intimated to beam them up just as they're about to be captured. Suspenseful as we're coming to the end here. So they escaped of anari ral ambush. Right but Chancellor, OK, because we always love a good separation, right short, is an emergency saucerge separation?

21:57 Try to say that ten times fast after you've been drinking some romulan ale, if you will. Emergency saucer separation, mers episode? Is it? So? Anyhow, they leave the ships and the cells and Atrium in the enemy's hands, right, So the episode ends with the Athenas saucer section hiding out in the nebula and noose. Braka is successfully walled off the entire Federation with minds containing this omega particle right inside sick Bay. Anisha wakes up to find who is she face to face with her sort of mortal enemy, Chancellor Ake, the woman who originally sentenced her son to her to prison and separated her from Caleb twenty years ago. And that's I think enough of a recap to kind of set the stage for where we're at, Season one, episode nine, three hundred a night, and I'm happy to chime in with score and more thoughts of this episode later, but you've heard enough of me talking. My good friend Eric is now going to let us into the Corpus Colossum. The twin Hemisphere veil of what our fans in the audience thought of this episode, Eric, did they like it? What do you think?

It had a bunch of great moments, but it does feel like a penultimate episode. The first part of a two part episode. That's not a bad thing.

This gives us apparently an aggregated fan score this week of nine point zero, which I think is the second highest after last week's episode, which was the highest that we had logged. So people are really digging the end of Starfleet Academy's season one here. So I, you know, is that warranted? Perhaps the Trexperts should render our own opinions, don't you think, Jim? I was busy looking for other things, so I missed the Omega one At the be gend of the episode, I thought this was running a little slow, how they're doing this ceremony, nice ceremony they're putting together with Caleb and Jay just walking away from it, and I thought that was a little bit off putting. It was an interesting interaction with with he and Tamara and the elevator.

27:07 So the beginning was a little bit slow and I think was a little bit off putting with the way he acted. But as he got to. His room. And Sam helping him trying to figure out what that key was that he never could figure out, the episode is starting to get a little better. Okay, we found mom. Okay, Mom's out there. He's got an idea where where she is. It's going to take quite a while to communicate with her, and with a situation going on, that may not be easy to do, so let's go find her. So he kind of goes and try to say his goodbyes to people and hijack a shuttle. Now I agree with Sam in the point that, yeah, try escaping a ship that's in warp and escaping the warp bubble. I'm not sure if that's been done too many times, because I know you should bring a ship out of warp before sending a shuttle off. So I'm not sure if that's actually been attempted before or not, but that was interesting to set the harmonics of not getting yourself destroyed by going through that bubble. So we end up with several of

28:43 the friends on board the shuttle with a couple of people missing, and off they go trying to find mom. As I said, the city reminded me a lot of rag City, and when we found wharf I could throw in section thirty one. We get this grungy looking area that's outside of Federation space, which is definitely an interesting US part of where we visit. We get through some rough issues with here. I warn't welcome a little bit of hostility, and the station's getting taken over. The station, the planet's getting taken over. Okay, we're gonna have to deal with this.

29:45 We get. They try to escape to get caught. That brings Caleb back to his friends, knowing he can't leave them to be sacrificed, and after almost getting caught, does a incredil little plan I like of somebody's off here selling uh, selling off communication back communication Delta's starfleet deltas like this one. He holds up and holds up in the air, and I thought that was an interesting way of doing it, and the distraction of course, the cat. Of course, the ship comes in. They find the only way they can do it is to actually break into orbit within in the in the into the stratosphere of the planet and come in and rescue. And we find out from the rescue.

30:51 That it's. A bigger issue than they thought and a cliffhanger. I know Jim Will mentioned this, but definitely Reno does a good job on the bridge this time. I love that character up there. But for this episode, I think I'm gonna go agreeing with the fans with a little bit the opener could have used a little bit of help. I'm going to go with them, agree with a nine. All right, not respectable, respectable. Let's let's see what Moldy Cheese and the Water has to say.

31:38 David Well previously on Last Talk Talking episode, I have to give the last episode of two. So that's my score? Wait, are you serious? The one that everybody gave a ten? You gave it a two? Yep, we predicted that was gonna happen, right guys, there we go. Yeah, So for this particular episode, it did take me a little while to get into it because last week's episode or I guess two weeks ago. Wait, pretty bad. But I started getting into it the moment they started to bream down to the planet. It started getting a little bit more Star Trek vibe, and uh, from that point on, it was just kind of like.

32:27 Yeah, pretty good, pretty good. And then from that all the way to the end, though, it was just for some odd reason, I'm like, wait a minute, how did he mind the entire Federation border? That doesn't make sense to me? And I'm like, it's gotta be hundreds of thousands, or maybe not thousands, but hundreds of light years for sure, and the rolley Roll or Venario all got to be a pretty big empire to produce that many minds, and on top of that, at the same time mine the entire border. To me, I was just like, that doesn't make sense, but yeah, I don't know. And the entire time, for some reason, Galaxy Quest kept coming into my head for like the Omega thirteen particle of like, yeah, they talked about the Omega's particles and Star Trek before and the idea that seven of nine was like saying that she could contain it and everything like that. So I was like, Okay, it's pretty cool. But at the same time, it was just like it was just I don't know, the ending of that episode just kind of ruined it for me.

33:38 I was just like that part right there to kick me out. I did not like that story plot of mining the entire federation. It was just like, oh man, it's gotta be really weird writing or something. I don't know who came up with that, but yeah, I did not like that at all. And so to me, this particular episode to me was I do have to agree with Charles was a little slow. Probably it took me a while to get into it, but I did not. Yeah, I'm gonna have to probably give that episode last week's episode. I guess I can't remember when it came out, but I'm gonna have to give that episode, uh a five.

34:21 I think. Yeah, it was just a little too slow in the writing at the end. I just did not. It really took me out. I was like, Okay, that's just weird, but yeah, five for me. All right, so we got a nine, we got a five, and we got an eric. All right, let's see. I will say I did like the opening scene with Jaden quite a bit. It was kind of a cool moment where Jaden is, you know, opening himself up to his friends that he's made here at school. He's like sharing a cultural thing with them, and to have Caleb kind of uh reject that really shows you how far into his own thing Caleb has gotten.

35:07 And I like that they showed that because I think his character sometimes has gotten sidetracked by his relationship with Tarima, but essentially, at his core, it's always been about his mom, right, And I think that this episode really ends up highlighting that. I still don't understand how Jaden's teeth are so amazing. I guess he's always had really good goch his whole life or something, but like, he's got the cleanest teeth of any any cling on I've ever seen. It's got it's gotta be, it's gotta be. So uh. You know, when they first brought up the Omega molecule, I was like, oh my gosh, we're back to the like I immediately remembered Omega directive and like Seven's whole like fascination with the molecule and how it's supposed to be like perfect. You know, the board considered it like a perfect thing. This of course they like came adjacent to it a little bit by calling it a synthetic version that Omega forty seven. But they were able to, I think, effectively use this kind of like galactic peril, which I sometimes I complain about galactic peril and how much of it there is in Star Trek these days, particularly throughout the end of Discovery and that kind of stuff.

36:22 But in this case, it was galactic peril that a struggling and by the way, very small federation and I'll come back to a point that David made in that regard, but a very small federation developed this like incredibly deadly weapon and then couldn't even keep it contained from some pirates, right, like they deserved to have it stolen from them. And this creates galactic peril that is a reflection of the people who are now in danger. It's akin to like us creating a bunch of weapons and then selling those weapons to people who then shoot those weapons at us, right, which happens like in the real world quite a bit.

37:02 So I thought that was a really cool little bit of storytelling there, And you know, it was kind of cool that we never actually see in Newsbraka the whole episode. He's not actually in this episode. His name is just kind of flung about, and I thought that actually worked pretty well character wise. I really like Sam's journey that she's on right now. You know, we talked a little bit last week about how we're getting a little bit of a different kind of Sam. We get even more different Sam here, who is doing things way differently and less naively. She does say one thing that kind of bugged me just a little bit. So she says something like I've never done anything I wasn't programmed to do or something like that. And she said that, but she says it after having experienced an entire lifetime with the Doctor right as of last episode or a couple of episodes ago. So so I get the like sentiment, this is her first like real branching out, but just like, they could have been a little less clumsy with the way they brought that into the story because obviously, you know, the Doctor didn't make her only do things that she was programmed to do during the seventeen years that they lived together. Right, Okay, So anyway, enough about Sam the other character stuff. You know, we get this guy right here, what's his name, Darren. I don't know why they made

They get to the cool like blade Runner planet and they find Tachiata Maslani, who's amazing. And I thought the scenes between Caleb and his mom were really really beautiful. You could kind of like feel the fact that they hadn't seen each other in like twenty years. I thought both actors just did a fantastic job kind of playing that out.

They do the Athena rescue and right, this is like oke Apparently dumping all the cadets off somewhere else and then taking the big bad ass to like school flying school across the border to do a rescue. What it got me thinking, you know what they need The Athena needs a defiant. They need a ship that they can go out and do like missions on that holds like twenty twenty five people, so they don't have to take the flying School everywhere they go. So I don't know, Season two, maybe writers give us, give us a defiant because now half of the Athena is in the hands of the pirates, right the saucer got away, which I'm always up for good saucer separation.

40:21 I like that. But the probably the best scene in the whole episode was that very last one that Paul described during his during his recap, which is the one that's kind of in slow mo. Ake walks into the room and Caleb's mom sees her and sees the woman who you know, essentially separated her from her child, and it appears so far in her interactions with her child after, especially after she found out all her all his friends were Starfleet, that she's not really comfortable with that, right, So I expect to see some fallout from that at the beginning of the final episode, and I am excited to see how that works. So, David, just relative to your point, remember, the Federation is really really small, so I and the Venari rawl appeared to be like a really powerful entity right now. I think what we lack is like one of those maps that kind of shows like who's controlling what right now. But remember in Star Trek Discovery, the Federation was literally like the little warp bubble right like, it was like that's all they were in. They were in like this light. They had no other planets. So the Federation is very very small at this time. They now have Beta zed we now right, they have Earth presumably maybe they've captured some of these other small planets like Alpha Centauri and stuff. I don't really know exactly how many planets are in the Federation right now, but but it's not like where most of the Alpha Quadrant is Federation at this point in history.

I just thought still, even in Star Trek Discovery, they talked a lot about like what Pecid were joining, and they even had an entire episode about a bunch of aliens in one room in Star Trek Discovery where they were all joining and signing the Federation charter and everything all over again. So it just seems like there was multiple alien races, and we did actually did get to shield map of what the kind of looked like with all the minds rounded. It was pretty pretty big, and it was like probably I'm assuming probably a good hundred planets if not more. I thought it was well done, well acted, and just a really good scene. The thing about this episode that I really liked was the characters. They're they're starting to bond and become a family, which we've been watching through all the episodes, and we're starting to see the glue starting to gel. It's coming together now and they're starting to really become Starfleet. They're growing into their starfleet cowm badges.

And I really really like that a lot, because that's the endgame of season one and they got there when you look at where they started in episode one and where they are now and you can see that progression, So kudos on that. On the planet when they got captured, I thought Caleb was being a real dickhead when he found his mother telling them all off. He runs off to leave them behind to be killed, and he was a real dink but body had a change of heart and he came back with his mother and they saved him. Now, the scene where brings the saucerge section in, did it not have a Wrath of con vibe? My only one that got that vibe when when the ship came When when the ship rises down through the steam of the atmosphere, did that not have a nebula effect like when when the Reliant shows up. At least that's what it reminded me.

It wasn't one of Freak's best episodes, but you know, seeing Caleb get back together with his mother was something we've been waiting for and to see that was cool. And you know, she didn't she didn't freak out and turn green and hulk out, so you know, for those of you who know who she is and what characters she played, so I thought that was cool.

I think the the whole I've got to steal a ship to go save my mom thing, the stealing of a ship thing, and there's never any consequences for it. It's just we have done that. That is, you know, if there's a hallmark of the last like five years of Star Trek, that's one of the things we just constantly see again and again and again. That drove me nuts. I did think that the the Omega you know, whatever number it is, the Omega forty seven molecule, right,

Right, this Omega forty seven thing was again, we're going to start ripping open subspace as the results of this thing, and is very awkward. But the worst for me was this for Cocktaup Planet, Oh my god, Okay, I just hated it, all right, It's just I understand the whole wanting to find Caleb's mom, and that's great, but oh my god, this is like I lost count of how many different episodes of like Picard or Discovery you'd be in some black market planet where things are sort of sketchy and there's bad guys running around. I mean, or Section thirty one did a lot of this right, which was just appalling. And there's a lot of tarps and everyone's badly disguised wearing their like ponchos and you know, crazy tarp things, and everyone's sort of rough, and we're gonna wear black colors to show that it's a rough and tumble marketplace, black market planet. Oh my god, I can't believe they went back and did that again for this.

The only reason I stayed with it is I thought the acting, as I mentioned before, was really solid between Titani and Masle and Sandra Roasta is Caleb Meir. I think He's doing a really good job with the Caleb Miir this season. I think it is great. But man, that tired cliche of the backwater black market, you know, Tarpaul and Poncho planet off. Yes, indeed, an animated Firefly series is in the works. Stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tutik, along with the rest of the cast, announced the news during a big cast reunion panel at DC's awesome con just this last Sunday. A video popped up right after on Instagram with Nathan Phillian saying that not only does he have creator Josh Wadon's blessing, but twentieth Century Fox Disney is also excited to see Serenity Sore again. As for showrunners, Nathan Filliane has Tara Butters, Agent Carter and Dollhouse and Mark Guggenheim The Arrow and Flash lined up as a couple who met and married through the series.

A script has already written and an animation house has already lined up Shadow House, So right now they've got all the ingredients, but they need to find a home base to land their ship. You know, we keep seeing animation get more regard as a form of I mean, I don't know if it's gonna be cell animation or the kind of animation we see on Disney Plus with shows like a Mall Shadow Lord that's about to unspool in a couple of weeks, right because all the Rebel or clone wars, all that kind of like more three D animation is really build up a fervent following. But you know, look at the success this last year of K pop Demon Hunters. Right. It may be a silly title, but not own to me. Did that movie ever, like, strike a cultural nerve, right, and strike a huge I mean it just they needed a truck to carry away all the oscars they won Sunday, right, so the big stuff, So don't be smart. Animation. Animation is a huge art form and it allows a lot of creative freedom. You can do things a lot cheaper in animation than you would if you were having to film everything with you know, conventional special effects and a huge crew. So this gives him a lot of latitude to really deliver some interesting space storytelling. I just hope the dialogue is as crisp and amusing as it always was on the show. But with this group involved, I have zero doubts. I know they're going to pull it off.

Yeah, So, I am, of course very excited about this huge Firefly fan. You'll remember, Paul or maybe have a little reminder that between so this, I believe this animated series happens between the end of the season that we got in the Serenity Movie. And so at the beginning of the Serenity Movie book has actually been living on the Haven mining Colony and he kind of kind of comes back to rejoin the the crew.

1:38:01 So I expect that hopefully, well I expect that since we don't have Wrong Glass anymore, that he will be away on the mining colony and you know, and the rest of the crew will get to have their adventure here. But man makes sense, Yeah, yeah, And so I'm very excited about the fact that the animation is a viable way of actually bringing these characters back because remember, we haven't seen these guys for like, what's it been twenty thirty years or so. Twenty five years? Yeah, so twenty five years. So animation allows us to bring back these characters and put them in a scenario wherein we don't have to see their faces. It's kind of like putting Jane Way into Prodigy, right and having the younger version of herself be available. Because it's an animated show. So I know that not everybody's in the animation, but I do think it's a viable format. And as a person who's read all the books, read all the comics and everything, I'm just excited to have more Firefly.

People have been looking hungry for more for a long time and this is a wonderful group of actors. Right put them together, who knows what they'll come up with. I want to say one thing really quick. When I first saw a Firefly, I thought it was an adaptation to Star Wars because it just reminded me so much about it, and I thought it was just another part of the Star Wars universe. And just like the ship boys like named the shwy was named Firefly because of the ship and everything. I was just like okay, Stalward, But it turned out to it for me. I was like okay, so yeah yeah. And if you watch the animated show Star Wars Rebels right, which came afterwards, Star Wars Rebels feels like Firefly. I mean it really does. There's a wacky band of like cohorts who are kind of like a found family that all live on this ship and get involved in different adventures.

If you don't know either show, you're gonna love it if you love one, right, because Rebels, this fantastic Star Wars storytelling doesn't get enough credit, you know, but it is kind of a spiritual successor at the Firefly. Spider Man's coming out at the end of July. Doing three is coming out in Christmas. Right, you want to see these trailers and try to find them on the biggest screen you can, especially the one for Doing three. I'm super excited for both these pictures. After seeing the trailers, they look amazingly cool.
