Well, you know, speaking of the weather, we only got two feet of snow, which is pretty cool. And it's only eighteen hole zero. That's pretty cool as well. It's going to be below zero for the next couple of days anyway, So yeah, whatever. Ill and I had, I had put this in the chat, but our good friend Chris GM. Chris texted me and told me that up in turn Toronto they were going to experience minus forty two, which, as everybody knows, is the point at which celsius and fahrenheit actually cross over on the temperature scale. So ridiculously, ridiculously, So.

4:15 You know how they say that boiling water freeze and turned to snow to throw it up in the air. Yeah, I saw some idiot that tried that and guess what it did turn to? You know what darwinism, man Darwin. Is Well, I'm battling a cold, so I son I am stuffy and I've got tissues. We are. Yeah, we're having some unusual weather. We had snow followed by ice, the kind that falls down from the sky and we're not used to that, and luckily we loose power, but it's been really cold. Stuff hasn't really been able to melt.

Yeah, well, you know, also we have with us also was out in Las Vegas, where I'm sure you don't have to be the snow, we've. Been dealing with about a half an inch to several inches of sun, so we get We dropped for a couple of days into the thirties in the morning, six fifth high fifties, now in the sixties in the afternoon.

So this is the part of the show where we would go on over and have Charles do our cadet training. We have no fancy graphic for this either, because David has that on his computer, so we have to suffer and have child just jump into a cadet training.

16:07 Okay, thank you, Uncle Jim. As a reminder of cadet training is where we go I go through and review different Star Trek episodes that are connected tonight's show in some way or another. As an example, we saw the cadets in training in the gym well Discovery, let's a season one episode six. We saw Tilly working out towards her command training, and then I don't think I've seen this episode. I'm sure Eric has the animated series The Practical Joker Is season two, episode three, which the picture I saw was something about Kirk is a jerk written on the back of his shirt, so I says the episode probably was based.

17:01 On a lot of practical jokes. Oh, and we talk about different games that they're playing. Well, the one that came to mind was TNG's Future Imperfect season four episode eight, the first time we saw Pereze Squares being played, and then definitely a couple of fun ones in here, ts Private Little War season two episode nineteen, and Lower Dix Magatu Uh Magatu Gomoto season two episode four, where we see the Magatu and that of course is the mascot for the Military Academy and TNG the Most Toys These season three episode twenty two, where we saw the Lapling, which is a small furry creature which is a mascot for the Academy, And those are the things I kind of picked out for this episode. So I think Paul might want to talk about this episode.

18:21 All right, friends, let's do a little recapping of this. Just I'm hoping that everybody listening got a chance to see the episode. All Right, We've had our the first week with a two episode premiere. This is episode number three. We're getting to here now things change up a little bit. The episodes titled Vitus Reflux all Right, which kind of almost sounds like it would be a lower Decks title, if you will. But with episode three here the focus shifts away from bigger galactic crises to more of the smaller internal growing pains of the cadets as they engage in kind of a high stakes prank war, if you will, with the rival school, the War College at Starfleet Academy.

19:04 So there's that conflict between the classes there almost you know, you're kind of getting up and walking next up to like the Gryffindor Slytherin type of if you were hard to avoid thinking of that. So there is a rivalry against students from the War College. They are an institution that prioritizes combat readiness during the era of the Burn while Starfleet Academy was closed. So it's important to consider that so real quick, just kind of go through the episode. We start off with Darren and he is determined to be the best he could possibly be, getting up in the middle of the night to be the first one awake, only to find out that Genesis has beat him to it, and he is getting up even earlier than he is the gymnasium. This rivalry between the two schools starts to a little tense and we hear that the War College folks have earned the moniker of the warholes really and provoke our protagonist Caleb with a big basketball to the head, and of course our cadet master has to break things up with her usual a plum there and things gradually escalate and we realize we're getting into a full on prank war when all of the cadets get beamed into the different locations that are usually water based of the school, like fountains or what have you, in various states of undress.

20:24 So Thoc is concerned about this prank war and goes to captain Ake, but she says, it's not really my place to shut this down. These are all kids who've kind of, you know, come of age during the burn, and it's kind of up to them to figure things out and work it out amongst themselves, which is a very enlightened. I thought that was really great. She does kind of take a moment to take her favorite group of cadets, you know, our heroes to a little lesson in botany, including a rep introduction to the titular plant in question. Here, the Vitis reflex, this cute little fungus that will actually repeat whatever is said to it in a high pitched, kind of cartoony voice, which is interesting. A centerpiece of this episode is all the cadets trying out for a game called Calika Okay, and the respective Calika teams except for Klingon jaden Den, who doesn't participate in violent stuff, so he's going to set this one out.

21:17 But there's a you know a little bit of a rivalry to see who's going to be captain of the team. Of course that ends up becoming, you know, another competition going on there, and we got a really cool briefing about the rules of this. It's kind of like basically live action laser tag is really what Kalika is kind of like. One of the characters even refers to it as that. And both teams have a mascot that's sort of like the equivalent of goalie, in which case the War College uses the Magato as Charles referred to, and the Lappling is the hilarious giant headed mascot costume for the academy, So everybody wants to be captain of the team, right, So Darren and Genesis face off in the showdown and he kind of Darren kind of cheats and uses reference to Genesis's daddy issues to kind of rile her up and take the team captain spot. Except he's not such a great captain, is the problem. Caleb takes a little moment to kind of reconnect with Tarima when he sees her practicing and playing basketball there, and there's a little bit of you know, coolness now between them. She's trying to be more disciplined, right, and she kind of treats him like a stranger. There's a blooper reel of all the cadets on the Kalka Field that gets viral and broadcasted throughout the academy, and Ake goes to the commander kellek or Kel rec rather he's head of the War College, and says, hey, you know, this couldn't have even gotten

22:49 out without your help, So you're kind of cheating things here, and he doesn't really care. He's where there was weird tea rituals and whatnot, right, So things keep escalating and eventually you gotta each ange is the War College gang to a secret late night mench in the atrium, right, which they have very little chance of winning. Darham outlines his plan to be really aggressive, right, but he doesn't really listen to his teammates. He doesn't listen to Genesis, who gives good advice, right, and he gets taken out really quickly, which puts Genesis in charge. And she's really good at being a leader, and she uses bits of strategy she picked up during practice and did things like creating a smoke screen and uses Sam's hologram powers to kind of work to their advantage, and they actually managed to score. And then there's a great bit where in the middle of the night Talk and Reno arrave to break things up and provide a little perspective about empathy and as signs some manual labor everybody for doing this craziness.

23:49 And we learn that Thalk and Reno are actually a couple, which is kind of a great surprise and which I think has gone over really well with folks. I think most folks I talked to quite delighted with that. And there's such an odd couple, it's just kind of hilarious. But it works, So everybody starts to realize, particularly Genesis, right, that Captain Ake is we dropping these hints on how they can win this prank war kind of on the sli right, giving these various tasks to show the war college losers who is the boss. Darren gets some great life advice from Reno where she shares some insight to how she and Thock find a way to make things work out right, and he joins rejoins the group and kind of has had a little lesson in vulnerability and humility, which I think any leader needs to have. We suck as a leader, frankly. And that's basically a quick overview.

24:45 This episode reminded me a lot of an old Deep Space nine episode in places take me out to the Hall of Suite with a crew and a face off with some snooty Vulcans, right, because in this case we have some very up to no good Shenanigan's building Navarre these two bullies, a Vulcan cadet and a Romulant cadet that reak a lot of the habit. So if you're wondering why are Vulcan's smiling, well, don't rush to conclusions. So there we go. That's kind of the the layout of the discussion points for us here tonight. Very interesting episode. I'll pop back later to give you my score, but there's where we are. Who wants to jump in there? Eric? You you're nodding enthusiastically.

25:26 Are you batting order? Well, I don't know if there's a total batting order. I mean so, I you know, I think for me, this episode really pointed out the the the kind of you know, emphasis on college shenanigans, right, like the whole thing's based around a prank war. There's It kind of took me back to, you know, high school things that might have happened, people messing with each other. When I first started watching the episode, I will admit that I had a reaction of, oh, this is very Starfleet or you know, this isn't utopian or like that kind of stuff.

26:19 But then then once I got into it, I was like, you know, the thing that I'm realizing about Starfleet Academy is that it's taking real world situations now that are are timeless in a lot of ways, and it's putting those to the forefront, and it's exercising those and it's putting them in a context that's you know, socially and politically relevant for today's world, and so in that context, I thought it was a delightful episode. I mean, there was a lot of competition sort of stuff going on. I really like the fact that those two is it Halob been Tema at the beginning, that are you know, fighting each other for like who's going to be dominant.

27:07 You know, Caleb does the the the dirty pool thing where he mentions her her dad, her you know, Admiral Dad, and so I think we're all kind of okay, Like every episode they've mentioned the Admiral Dad, So I think we're we're interested in that for sure. So yeah, I mean, for me, it felt kind of like a fun episode. There were some great scenes between between our chancellor and I'm sorry I forgot the other character's name, but the one she spent so much time talking to during the episode. Does anybody have that guy's name anyway?

27:47 The War College guy, cal rec hel Wreck. Okay, yeah, thank you. So I liked their kind of interactions with each other. I do like this concept in this show of there being something like the War College, something that is the remnants of the violent nature that was needed by Starfleet kind of during the burn years. That's an interesting concept and I and I dig it, and like I said last week, a little reminiscent of the Makos and Starfleet Enterprise or star Trek Enterprise. So oh, let me before I ask one question that's kind of a like deeper question. I will say thought and the relationship with oh my god, Jet Reno that amazing like superpower couple, right, But let me ask you is was the what? What was the kind of like overall purpose of the prank war from your perspective, I'm not sure what it was. I think it was team building, like in general, but it just couldn't like pinpoint why. It kind of meant, you know, at some point it kind of became obvious that it was engineered in some way, But what was the overall purpose of it? I I

29:19 will leave my review to ask you all to comment on that. But overall, I really enjoyed this episode. I thought it was quite good. It didn't like have the total shabang that the first two did for me, but I thought it was quite delightful. So I guess I'll give this episode to seven. Yeah, what did I? Oh, it's probably supposed to do that first time I started talking about it, Jim, I couldn't help it. Well, okay, so I guess now I've already done my review. So sorry about the out of orderness. But yeah, our Facebook fans, we always asked them, of course, what they think about it, and on a scale of one to ten, David core Covert said he gave it a ten. He loved the cheerios stuck to his shoulder. Sean Grant gave it a nine point nine to twenty significant digits, which is ridiculously accurate. It is the best Glory B two star trek Scott Kirkessener. Kirkessener said, honestly, I say a ten.

30:31 The show keeps improving with each episode. Jayden's voice wasn't as rough, and we got an ensemble episode, which was a welcome change from the other cadets taking a back seat. In episode two, we got some insight into Darren and Genesis, and overall it was a clever and fun episode which is needed. Thanks Scott. J. Robert Bravo said, interesting, I feel the completely commenting on somebody else's comment, just Scott's the previous comment, said Scott, Hey, interesting, I feel the complete opposite. I feel that this episode was the worst. I was surprisingly pleased with the debut episode kind of like most of episode two, and was supremely disappointed with episode three. So predictable. Cocky white male gets his comeuppance by his female classmate. She shows how much better a leader she is than the cocky white male. Administer gets his comeuppance from the female administer, and both toxic white males are put in their places per ideology of the producers and writers. Again, so predictable, and of course the war college was outwitted.

31:40 L O. I am, I mean takes takes all colors. Amy Edmunds also gave it a five. Slightly less verbose. Great sci fi, but it's full of Hollywood cliches about high school or college, like the fact that they have to do physical training. Yeah, super military like that was the other thing about this episode. It had like more of a like real military kind of feel to it. Willem Archers said I solid seven out of ten. A good episode without a doubt, but I enjoyed episodes one and two more. That's kind of where I am. Willem, thank you. Justin Potten said nine. It was such a fun and energetic episode TAWOOI ELOI said a ten real I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the episode, I mean with the whole beaming people in different you know, different stages of undress was hilarious. And let's face it, who doesn't want to do that to some people too, you know, humiliate them. I can think of some some people I'd like to do that too, So that that was funny. The plant did anybody else get a little Shop of horrors? Vibes? And Audrey with the way the shape of well quit yeah, I mean the opposite voice that I don't know. For some reason, that cracked me up. That it had that little squeaky voice and repeated what people said and got it just went out of my head. I was going to say something else, all right, And I feel really extremely stupid that I somehow missed that Laura and Jed are a couple and I think that's fantastic. So I missed that part.

So yeah, the whole thing with with Ake just quietly in the background saying, you know, uh, in so many words, I can tell you how to win this, and nobody's listening to her because I think we've all been in that situation where it's like we're trying to tell you just listen to us. Oh, well, you're not going to listen to us. You're going to lose. So I guess overall, but you are right. It was full of energy. It was funny. I think, what was it?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, that was great.

Think that's one of the cool things about thok right is like she offers the opportunity to like have that dry humor where a real person might not even say that line, but because of the way this show is written, it's a. Yeah, it was funny as fuck. I got there. I said it. I just I was cracking up because it was her delivery. It was like, was that a joke or it was? It was perfect. And I love her relationship that the two of them have. You know, She's like, well, I joined you for three reasons, and she tells her the first two, and they said, well, what's the third. Well, his crazy teeth fetish Okay of all the things that fetish.

36:34 So I think those two have a really great rapport. They really play well off. Of each other, and I loved I think she's a great addition to the show and the jet renal thing when she comes and she calls her kitten, what are we having for dinner? Kitten? And she says Chinese jem Hidar klingon combination or something. I forgot exactly what the combination was, but but jet Reno says something like the combination. I never thought I would like something like that, something like that. I have to watch it again. But just she's hilarious. She is hilarious, and her and jet Reno play so good off of each other that it's a great combination. And I hope they keep it up for a good long time. That that romuling chick there at the War Academy, and she deserves to get her ask picked. I think she's the instigator of everything, you know. And what's his name? Lloyd?

Did anybody else think that was an homage back to Kyle from t O s like kind of like this blonde, you know, young blonde kind. Of boy Kyle. Yeah. The the laser tag thing. I forgot which characters said, I'd have to watch it again, characters like laser tag. The very next scene that we and I was like, yeah, just like that. And the very next scene we see they're on a battlefield with explosions and flames all over them, and there's Sam hugging this rock saying this isn't laser. The other guy the Betazoi guys, it's like, yeah, that's lady. I'm great. I loved it.

38:45 Great line when they were talking about bones and she just like kind of quickly interjects, I don't have bones, and I just like, it's not even that funny of a line, but like the way that actress is delivering those Sam lines. I think it's hilarious because it's totally nonchalant. It's kind of in the background. You might miss it, but if you get it, it's like, oh damn, that's a. Singer, Sam. I love Sam. I love Sam. Yeah. So, I mean, I think that theme of empathy and mutual cooperation, solving problems together, growing through cooperation, right, is a huge part of what's into not just this episode, but this whole series. Right, So I think that's a lot of what was trying to be conveyed. So sorry, but I hadn't mentioned Finnegan because it's just like that's I mean, the Temple's always been there, right, always, you know, So and you know when you bring it back to Tapestry too. In the Tapestry episode, I can't remember her name, but when Picard's remembering his old the girl that he used to hang out when they're up to Shenanigans all the time in that episode, right where they're they're you know, misbehaving and I'm going to show him and they're getting into fist fights and all kinds of They're wild and rambunctious, like

Do you do you want them to develop a you know, a new future hip lingo that kind of like says, we're in college. We're using this kind of language that.

But it's when you get into the colloquial stuff that's really modern, like dumpster Fire is very now, right, and you just it takes you out. It's like, I want this show to be, you know, find its own identity for young people. But don't make it so that if I took your script, I could basically turn it into a WB show just by changing the character names, right, because it feels too written for a contemporary audience. That way, you need to maintain the the membrane and the suspension of disbelief that this is hundreds of years in the future, and you can't do that with contemporary dialog. So it's just like that's something that you know, I'm not a Kurtzman era hater. I appreciate the shows that they have done on there a lot, but underneath is tutelage that goes on a lot in the writer's room, right, Picard did it all the time, and it's just you've got to stay away from that. And I think, you know, most writers I think would agree with me, hopefully, But you know, I just wanted to stand the test of time.

I don't know where they did all the location shooting for this particular episode, but man, they really made use of it with like the gymnasium. You know, I'm with Uncle Jim. I'm I think this show has just been tremendous each week. You know. As soon as I'm done with dinner tonight, that's what I'm doing. I'm sitting down watching Fur because I'm super looking forward to it.

She starts her last night, you know, and we talked about the star and so, you know, the people at the school, the teachers at the school that are watching this are really liking it, and they're watching it with their families. And I think that's what starts for getting and I think that's what Starfleet Academy is delivering. So I couldn't be well.

The first season of Starfleet of Star Trek Starfleet Academy has just begun, and RDIDW Publishing has announced a new tie in comic series set to beam down after the season concludes this spring, Debuting in April twenty twenty six. Starfleet Star Trek Starfleet Academy Lost Contact will be a five issue limited series starring the lead characters from the new television show. The series will be written by Lane Morgan and illustrated by Korally Espouna and Nora Serrano. Here's a description of the Lost Contact storyline.
