As David intimated, we are having craziness out here in the Pacific Northwest. A big atmospheric river of apocalyptic proportions has been hitting us on the chin these last couple of days, a big, big wallop today. In fact, if you remember how brainy it was at the end of Apocalypse Now and Colonel when Willard is sneaking into Colonel Curtsi's compound, it's that kind of rain. It is just super heavy and torrential. So hopefully we none of us lose power. But it's getting crazy, getting crazy out here.

2:49 We had eight inches of snow and now it's raining and it's going to melt all the snow away for Christmas, no more white prison. And it's going to be fifty, which is unbelievably warm for hard neck of the Woods. And let's stick with our Portland theme and swing on down the eraic. How you doing tonight? I am doing pretty good. I'm getting excited here because I'm about forty eight hours away from seeing a Klingon Christmas Carol at the TPS Center Theater up in the Seattle area, going to a show Saturday night. I don't know what to expect, but if you mix a Christmas Carol with Klingon's nothing but amazingness can occur.

14:55 So tell us just what you think. Get together. We will all try, all right, Robby Lenna. So I'm going to jump up on my soapbox here for just a minute. I had put up a post on our truck talking page about Starfreed Academy, which was like the most popular post we had well well over one thousand plus responses, and it hit me thinking, what is going on? What is the problem? Why is starfred Academy such dividing the fan base so much? So I wanted to talk about that a little bit here, and I just wanted to say I wanted to throw out the conversation by saying, I remember when TNG came out, things hated it. It was at conventions where they booed, oh Faith came out. We can't have a show without the enterprise. It can't be on a space station. Boohoo, who Voyager came out? It's Star Trek. It's not every time the show comes out hater come out and droves.

16:03 But it seems to me like because it will be different since well, of course now we have the Internet back and we didn't. And you know, I'll be the first one to say that not all Star Trek is wonderful. And we all have different opinions. Just as an example, my favorite movie has to be okay, this one, right, I love this movie and a lot of people don't, but that's my opinion that it's my favorite movie. There's a difference between opinions and just hatred for no reason. You might not like Start for five I do, But in my opinion, all Star Trek is Star Trek, and the core of Star Trek is something that I happen to believe in, something that I do with and I see infant diversity and infinite comminations, and Star Trek has a message that I strongly believe in and I think we need it more than and that's acceptance, empathy, understanding, all these things that seem to be lacking today. And even the worst Star Trek at its core is based on those simple ideals. So when I hear people say it's not real Star Trek, I want to say, well, obviously, if you're going to say that you have no idea what Starstrek really is. Maybe you don't like Discovery, that's cool.

17:23 Maybe you don't like strange New Worlds, that's cool. But to disparage everybody who does because in your opinion, it's not real Star Trek. That doesn't fly in my book. And I am completely excited, beyond belief to see Starfleet Academy because I feel that Starfleet Academy is giving us exactly what Star Trek does best, has done best, and continues to always do best, and that is give us something different, give us something new, and show us something we haven't seen before. TNG did it? When after tos Face nine did it? Voyager did it? Enterprise did it? Every Star Trek series that comes along is always different than the one that we had previously. And that's what keeps Star Trek alive, That's what keeps it changing, and that's what brings fresh new blood into Star Trek. If it wasn't for JJ, how many Star Trek fans wouldn't have discovered Star Trek. I mean, I told the story a while ago. I don't think my current trucks births were around well, child may have been. When Star Trek two thousand and nine came, I wanted to go see it.

18:35 My wife didn't want to see it with me, but my daughter did. She was in college at the time, and her and her friends said, oh yeah, we'll go see Star Trek with you. And I said, you want to come see Star Trek with the old man? And we did. And we're at the theater and after it ended, all the kids, anybody that's younger than me, they're hanging around out in the lobby and I'm like Yoda, the lies of will save, you know, sharing wisdom about Star Trek that they didn't know because they had never seen it before. So if it wasn't for JJ, a lot of these kids wouldn't be in the Star Treks. So we don't the spare people that want to enjoy Star Trek and uh, you know, give them the chance to enjoy it the way we all got to enjoy it, And don't judge people. If you don't like it, that's okay, but you know, don't don't spread hatred because that's not what Star Trek is all about, infinite diversity in combination.

19:34 So I'm going to forego the Starfleet Academy Paul that we did and you know, just get some opinions from my truck experts about the situation. So that's that's where I stand. I'm really psyched to see a Jaden car, a full blooded Klingon who wants to be a doctor. I'm really psyched about that because all we've ever seeing Klingons do with way back around and had people on Wednesdays. So I'm really psited to see, you know, a Klingon doing something other than killing people and being a Klingon fan. I'm really excited to see what they do with that character.

20:15 It was Warf that got me into Star Treks, so I'm interested to see where they go with that character. So he's the one that I'm really excited about. Obviously. The the Klingon Jim Hadar, we talked about a couple of shows ago. I'm excited to see where they go with her character and to find out some of her backstory as well. So that's that's my take on it. So how about you, Eric, Yeah, you. Know, I'm kind of in the same boat with you. Jim. I'm pretty excited about it. I think that there are specific things that I'm interested in like these characters that you've been talking about in ways that they can kind of thirty seconds centurize more, you know, more of these alien races and stuff. You know, there's no secret that I think that some of the trailers have caused me to be a little bit cautious about my optimism. But I always go into every new Star Trek situation, hopefully with an open mind, and judge a book after I've read it, not just by the cover of the marketing.

21:24 So so yeah, anyway, that's about all I have to say about it. I'm I'm pretty excited. I think it's going to be great. I've been surprised at how you know, surprise, not surprised at how many people have been kind of not really into it. But you know, there are plenty of people who were into it too, So it's just you tend to be really loud when you don't have much to say. I think you know. Something else to Eric is that Starfleet Academy is going to be the first I don't know the years because I don't follow you know, the fake This is the first Starfleet Academy class since you know what in Star Trek world, what two hundred years or something since Earth left.

22:08 Yeah, yeah, it's like one hundred and fifty or eighty years or something. We have a whole a whole time that we know nothing about, that we can explore, and we get to see this first Academy class. I'll graduate from the Academy. I think it's going to be something special and something good. So I'm really I mean, one thing that Starfleet Academy has the opportunity to do here, I think, with its new setting and with this diversity of caste and that kind of stuff, is hopefully tell us new types of stories. You know. I think that on occasion, newer star Trek goes back to old wells and relies on reference points a little bit.

22:50 Those are fun. Those are great as little aside things as as seasoning on the beautiful piece of meat that you've growed perfectly, right, but the beautiful piece of meat has to be good, right. Well, how about you vig what you think? Yeah, I am looking forward to watching it. But what you said was perfect about you know, whatever I mean you had that It just totally went out of my head. But when I was listening, it's like I agreed with everything you said the whole infinite diversity, infinite combinations, which I've seen some really nasty comments out there, not necessarily in our page, but on the I try to scroll past.

23:35 In fact, sometimes when I see starf Lead Academy mentioned and I have to scroll past so I don't see something ignorant and hateful that somebody has said because I don't want to get into it with them. But you know, that's it's true. It's like, if you don't understand the basic principles Starfleet and star Trek with you know, Gene Roddenberry's vision, then I don't understand how you can be like, are you just a fringe fan and you just are there because you've got the cool pew pew, you know, alien stuff. I don't know, but I'm hoping. I just don't know how people can be so negative with only seeing a couple of trailers. But like you said, they did the same with all the others. I recently watched the documentary that was done about DS nine, What We Left Behind, and they were reading because then it was You've got letters, and they were reading some of the letters that that people had sent, and I'm sure there were plenty of hateful ones there, but just just very disparaging.

Yeah, yeah, So anyway, I am looking forward to it. I just. Well, let me just say that some of the stuff that's being said that is uh they're complaining about, oh this is all DEI and this is all woke, And I know exactly where that type of comment is coming from the sort of people, and I just say, I'm sorry you're like that. One of these days you will realize just how wrong you were about, you know, spewing this hate because somebody led you into it, or maybe it was there all along. I don't know, but just just give it a chance and just you know, be kind, uh be kind to people, because I mean, that's what we say at the end of the show. But I don't know, we need we need kindness and acceptance and love, especially after this rough week. We need it more than ever.

26:06 So all right, I'll get off my soapbox. Now, who else ahead? How about you, Paul? What do you think I always I get excited anytime this new content. Right, I'm you know, diehard star Trek fan. There's a lot of stuff that I'm you know, less than enthused about from some of these shows. Like you know, for example, I do find for the last you know, three or four years under like the Kurtzman production aesthetic. There's a sameness to the way a lot of the episodes look in a way, a lot of the stories are told all right, and I hope that this show has a chance to break out of that a little bit and go more towards the direction of like Eric's talking about more fresh stories. You got a lot of money showing up here. They've already got season two Roland, so season one must have been fairly satisfying and had some good dynamics to them and gave.

27:06 Them a lot of confidence. Right. So I mean all we've really seen so far is marketing, right. I mean, so you know, and some of the marketing is always going to be like, you know, we want to make it as big and exciting as possible so that people will turn in. So they're going to show them more extreme you know, if you will. Cheap seats scenes to kind of get people enthused, right, That's normal marketing, right, I want to I'm not going to judge judge it to I've seen it, right, and they got ten episodes of the first season, so that's a lot of real estate to cover, right, So I'm cautiously optimistic. I mean, there's been some scenes that look a little clanky. We're going to have to just be okay with the idea that this is a younger group of actors, a younger group of characters, right, who are coming up. I think everybody who is a next gen fan remembers with a lot of funness, how great the Starfleet Academy episodes could be. Like when Wesley Crusher was there.

28:00 You know, some of those episodes were just pure gold, right, and this is going to be a different Academy to some degrees because it's far off in the future, but it's you know, young people going through the trial of growing up and understanding the world is a great landscape to tell stories, you know, it really is. And I really want to compliment the casting folks on this show because you know, you've got yeah, a lot of okay. Some people have joked around that as a nine O two one zero look to it, right, But over here on the other side, you're counterpointing with two just heavy hitters acting wise, right, Paul Giamatti and Holly Hunter. Right, I mean they're great. Holly Hunter in particular is just so formidable.

28:42 She's just awesome. So give them some time, right. You Know. The one thing I don't think is a good idea to do is to watch episode one and then judge it right away, right, and just say, okay, well that's what the show is. You know, very often with television, right, you need four or five episodes to really find your right. First season of like The Expanse had some clunker stuff going on in it, right, and it ended up morphing into one of the most brilliant, sophisticated science fiction shows ever. So give them some time to explore and find their way, right. And I think it's you know, I want to support it and be optimistic, and I think most fans do as well. I mean, you know, I'm not going to blindly follow it, right. What I don't like is where there's the blind obedience to following anything. We've seen that cause a lot of problems in our culture lately. Right, It's just like, but it's the recognition syndrome oh, look, I recognize something that they're making a reference to from whatever, season three of Starturing Voyager. Right, Therefore I recognize it.

29:46 I am going to like it, and that makes it good. We see that a lot, and just recognizing something you're familiar with is bad critique. Don't just you know, fall in love with something because it contains an element you recognized, right. We see that on lower decks way too often. So, like Eric said, you know, the core prime principle is good writing. That's what I want to see is I want to see good writing. I have a lot of faith in this cast to pull that off. And you know, we live in a really toxic environment these days, friends, we really really really do, especially and you know I'm a big Star Wars fan as well, and you see just as much stuff there. You know, they cast a person of color, Oh my god, the racists come crawling out. Of the right. We're seeing a lot of that right now. We're seeing all and not just that, right, We're seeing a lot of folks who just hate women, right, or hate women who don't correspond to their idea of a female esthetic right, who maybe are a little bit uh, you know, different shape than they're used to, and they just come out with the vitriol and the rancor and a lot of the hatred that Jim's talking about. Right, So my recommendation is when you run into somebody like that, there's this marvelous button called block. They've lost the privilege to communicate with you, right, block them. If our face Facebook group is a privileged, magical space, we want to cultivate it and make it a warm and welcoming place for everybody.

31:06 Somebody joins that Facebook group and they are behaving in a way that we don't like. Out cut them out, Yeah, out their We don't need them, we don't need If somebody's coming in here and they start with the anti you know it's too woke andd dird she's too fat, those fuckers. Need to go. I mean, no warning, they're out. We don't need that, we don't need that. Society is in danger of falling apart, and we want a better society, a society more like what Star Trek's Ethos spouses. So if somebody misbehaves, act like a bartender eighty six there ass that's what I recommend, And Uncle Jim's got the power. But just you know, don't don't take it, don't don't put up with that bullshit, right, just throw them out. We don't need them. We don't need them. We want positivity in this group. And respectful critique is welcome. Respectful critique. If this is something you don't like, that's that's part of the whole thing. Right, we can disagree, but disagree like somebody who's you know, got a spine and a soul. Don't just be a blanket duf us, right or a shit it. We don't need it, you know, and just get out. You know, we have plenty of other fans who know how to bay of themselves, and a lot of them live in Europe.

32:17 So but you know, so looking at you America, I mean a lot of very toxic fans behaving in a very inappropriate way. So if you want to hang out with us, we want to hang out with you, but be nice. Clean up your egg, you know, as I bought it for a long time. And yeah, and my you know, my mantra we used to have tending bar was very quirky and right. Be good or be gone. Yep. So I think that's that's kind of how we should be in this group. Right, So I'm excited as hell. I mean, after the Christmas holidays, we just got a couple of weeks. This show looks I mean, you know it's going to be perfect right away? Probably not, but is it going to be entertaining and just you know, wow, give us a lot of stuff to talk about. Absolutely, I mean, I'm I mean, just it's we've had a bit of a drought of no good startup for a while since the last season changed the world. I'm super excited to get talking about new shows again and to see some new stories.

33:18 So bring it on, Bring it on. How about you, Charles, what do you think? What are your what's your take? Well, there's one of the comments that I've heard and complaints. It's like, Okay, we're reusing all we're reusing all material. Okay, we went to DS nine, which still was in the tng Era, in Voyager that was still in the tng Era. Then we went to Enterprise. It's like, okay, well Enterprise went back in history, but it's still covering currents. He'll get reaching towards current material, and Discovery was kind of backtracking a little bit and then moving towards it, and then strange New world is kind of still hitting in some of the reoccurring history. Strafliet Academy is brand new world. Yes, we're reaching a little bit of Discovery era, but it's still all brand new worlds. We don't we haven't discovered most of what's out there yet. In the uh Strafiet Academy era. We're seeing species we wan't. We don't know what's that we have species. No, we haven't seen a Klingon in a while. We haven't seen a Romulan in a while. What's happened to all these species that we were used to back in the twenty third, twenty fourth century.

34:52 We're gonna get a chance to see these species again. See what's happened to some of the different people. Yes, we do have mixed of a Jim dar mix. Okay, well, okay, maybe there what's the story? What happened to this? What happened to these species? Yes, because we're getting new views, it's entirely different culture. The only thing, the only thing we've got from here into the future. We do know that Discovery is going to disappear and get lost sometime in a couple couple hundred years. Well, I don't think we're ever going to get.

35:34 That far into the show with that. So I want to see what they're going to do with these series, and I'm looking forward to it. I want to see what they're going to do with it. Yes, we might be trying to get a little bit of a younger audience at the same time, but hey, let's keep the original original audience and get a new audience and get a bigger, bigger build a bigger fan base. Let's just not try to find the negativity and what's wrong with this series? All right, Well, David, guess what you get to bring up the caboose on this one, Buddy, Hello World.

36:20 It's been quite an adventure trying to get from here to there. But I do have to say I'm actually super excited about this show because, like you guys all said, it's it's new trek h. The idea of new content coming out is always super exciting, and I have to agree with a lot of everybody else, you know. So this was episode nine, the finale that wraps things up, and for folks who maybe been following along this whole thing starter Khan, basically it happens to cover everything that was supposedly we never knew about between the end of Space Seed, when you know, Kirk essentially maroons Con and his followers on this planet, and then in Wrath of Khan where we see that oh Con turns out it is still alive and he's got still with him many many years later, so this is kind of filling in that bridge story. Originally, this was written as a mini series for television from Nicholas Meyer, who conceived of Star Trek Wrath of Khan and who was one of the all time greatest guests of this show. Have so great to see his work being reinterpreted from some new voices here, because Nicholas Meyer is a rock star. So anyhow, we're talking about the final episode of the of the radio pod series called Eternity Space, Okay, and we start off

So anyhow, after defeating Ivan, the ship launches. But wait, first of all, com a, I have a heart a marvelous moment of clarity where I I cannot go with you, with you, Cuddy, my daughter. I must stay here with my followers and take a higher purpose and lead them. So he decides to stay behind, which freaks his daughter out because she's

And he's like feeling a guilty conscience, I guess, And so he's gonna stay behind with his followers or whatever, and so maybe they'll like him now that he's killed Ivan, right. So he watches the venture take off, but there's like a big ion storm or whatever the hell, right, one of the those you know things that only happened since that, And it appears appears that the that the ship explodes, and so he thinks that Collie has been killed, right, and it's like, oh my god. And rather than wait a few minutes to confirm this, he has a big, overwrought emotional meltdown and he destroys the radio, right, you know, kind of you know, like Gilligan's Island stuff, just kind of breaks it with a run, right, And so he has no idea, but he assumes that Kalie is dead and that he's overwhelmed with grief and he's devastated by the loss of his daughter and the loss of all hope, and so he is basically the beginning of his transformation into the eventful con that we see in Walth of God.

But you know, if you would just basically left the radio alone, because it sure sounds to me like your daughter was trying to get back in touch with you from the radio, right, And because she was not killed, surprisingly she was survived, only they were way out into space. Whatnot? Right? And guess what. Fans of the framing device of this particular radio podcast where we've been whatever happened to doctor Lear anyway, the historian who's really obsessed with the finding out all these things about and wants to keep going back out, Well, guess what, Oh my god, plot twist, spoiler, My mind is blown. It turns out that doctor Lear is the daughter Collie. This whole film we didn't know. Well, super huge surprise there, and to me, I mean that was a big surprise, But that was actually one of my favorite aspects of this show. Was at the very end of the finale, once CON's all taking care of nonsense, there's a really great scene with doctor Lear and Tuvac right, a good friend Tim Russ, a friend of the show who's been on here before, right, And it's a really great scene and it really felt more to me like legit star Trek writing right where it's just like, you know, She's like, I'm an augment and if you know you, if I leave this planet, you'll turn me in and I'll have to go to a penal colony. Right, And and God bless him, Tuvox write you know no, I

And I was just like that last scene between them kind of really brought me back. But I really loved that last scene with the two of them there, and it kind of to me validated the fact that, yeah, this has been Collie this whole time, trying to dig into her past, and it makes sense that she's a historian, and I really liked that dynamic there, and so to me, that was a great way to Jesus Christ, whoa.

That's why we keep him so anyhow. That is my super ham fisted and recaffeinated recap the final episode of Star Trekking. It was pretty goofy. I think, uh, if I was going to grade the series as a whole, I think i'd give this episode probably like a seven and maybe bump it up to an eight, just because I really did love that last scene. Tim can save the whole episode for me. I thought it was just like that was I almost felt like it was a different writer. But I love that moment with him and Layer at the end. That was really so I would give the series as a whole at nine, I would say, because I think people need to support this kind of thing.

Did I love all of it now, but I just the voice talent, the production value. I think it was just like very much like a fun comic book, right, and I dug it, So I would give the whole thing a nine. And I think this is a neat format to explore other corners of the Star Trek universe that maybe we normally wouldn't get into.

Yeah, so once again Marla's star Trek or Starfleet technology comes to the rescue, but conveniently, yes, conveniently, that's right.

Star Trek information and actually, if you wanna, if you're not tired of radio dramas and you kind of like this sort of you know, dramatic interpretation of a story, you should definitely go check out the The Star Trek Card No Man's Land audiobook thing, which is a Rothie Musicer and seven of nine story, which actually, unfortunately, I think is a little bit superior to this in terms of like it's actual overall writing. I just what

1:27:20 I really want to do is I really want to talk to Nicholas Myers about this series, because I want to know, like how much of what was done was his stuff and how much was added on. You'll remember that he originally designed a three episode you know, visual extravaganza that would explore the concepts that we got in this and it got expanded to nine episodes by people who were not necessarily you know, who not only were adding things to that story, but were maybe reinterpreting parts of that story. So it got three times longer than he originally anticipated that it was going to be. And to me, there were times during this series where it felt like things were filler, like it just they were kind of filling in stories in this episode was a little bit there for me, you know, Okay, so big overall picture, I've always had a little bit of an issue with the aliens in this Star Trek con story.

1:28:29 And now that we've heard the entire story and I feel like I can get a thirty thousand foot view, I can definitely say that the aliens were completely unnecessary. How much cooler would it have been to have Khan be the guy with his superior intelligence who figured out a way to build a ship that would get them off the planet, right, and then he builds his own ship which he puts his daughter on, and then he thinks the ship like. There are just so many reasons that aliens were not even close to necessary in this story, and I can't believe that that was part of Meyer's original story, but I wish I could ask him about it.

There was also a moment in this particular episode where it felt like a super weird bait and switch situation to me. And then and he does it, and then like from a writing standpoint, it just like all of a sudden switches and he's just like, by the way, I'm not going and I gotta stay with the people. And it felt very awkward to me the way that they made that transition.

Like, We've seen so many different versions of of Con. And. I guess I feel like in this case they it just felt like an awkward transition for me. So I felt like the whole series was had a really cool concept. I love that they made it. I feel like it probably could have been four to six episodes instead of nine episodes. So yeah, overall, this episode, I it wasn't the weak, but it was kind of a little like I was unsatisfied with Ivan coming like I even comes back out of nowhere.

It's fun to listen to audio dramas where you get like, you get to build pictures in your head of what's happening, but it's augmented by the sound that you're hearing and that kind of stuff. It's I love listening to it in the car myself. So yeah, eight point five overall, but a little bit of the week episode for me.

But ah, I agree with a lot what you guys were saying, like it doesn't make sense with this and that, and I'm just like, yeah, listening to you guys, I'm like, Okay, I think I got my score now. But there was such a couple other things that didn't make sense to me too, like the whole idea of the even coming back. You guys already talked about that, but I don't know, there was just something about this particular episode it just almost felt like it was just kind of like Eric said, you know,
