15:34 Oh, thank you, Jim. Maybe this week's a little bit thin in cadet training. That's like, really couldn't find a whole lot of Easter eggs. But definitely one that came to mind with TNG's Starship Mind season six, episode eighteen, that a mandatory hazardous and lisail Berry on Sweet Treemove accumulated radiation build up from the hull requiring the full, full full cruise evacuation, and that's where they had the people trying to sneak aboard and write and h bercard coming back in and kind of working against them. And then another one was lower Decks, where's the where pleasant Fountains Lie? Season two, episode seven, we discussed Prince Billups Lieutenant Phillups, who is a at the time a virgin and his parents want to devirginize him so that they can make him king. So, Paul, would you like to talk about this episode?

16:49 Thank you, Charles. Absolutely, well, we're gonna chat about the seventh episode or the first season of Starfleet Academy tonight, and not a lot of heavy lifting with this one. So it's fairly straightforward, which is nice. So we'll have a chance to i think, spend a good amount of time chatting and then we'll move over to news. But the episode title iszine or cosine however you want to say it, and it refers to a coyonean tradition. Kyonea is, of course, one of the planets one of our characters is from, and in this tradition, basically the cosine or cosine is acting as an assistant or support person for a bride or bridegroom during a ceiling ceremony aka wedding. So it's a lot like being the best man or maid of honor in good Old Earth culture. Here, this episode is a little lower stakes compared to what we just had the previous week. It's more character focused in tone because we had a lot of dramatic events in that last episode, including a character demise. So when this episode begins, it's been about a month since that havoc ensued and everyone's kind of recovering. The cadets are all ready to hit the road and leave Starfleet Academy for what's all World's Day, some kind of a big celebration.

18:03 It's basically as far as Starfleet Academy goes, it's like spring break. Everyone's going to go and do their thing right. And so we had kind of are faced with a dual plot in this episode. The first of all is where Darreham is from Coyonea and he's pulled into this arranged Coonean marriage and it's kind of crazy. He is seemingly abducted at first by this mysterious figure through some kind of a portal, and Jaden is like, what am I seeing here? And because he's a good guy and he values his friends, he follows him through the portal, only to discover it was not an actual abduction. It was marital abduction, which is a zany tradition from Darreham's people. Again, the Cooneans, So he's sort of there at Coonea with him right, and he discovers that Darreham is actually a prince.

18:57 He's royalty and he is betrothed to a pre vices Kira, and due to his parents planned abdication, there's been an acceleration and the wedding has been moved up, which makes an awkward situation for Dream because he has to choose between his royal duties and getting married and his life is Starfleet that he's been planning to do for this whole amount of time. So the theme really emerges really quickly in terms of like what are you know you what do you want to do? Versus what are your everyone else expecting you to do? Which I think is a big theme that a lot of people can relate to. Now. Eventually later on during the episode, during the ceremony, Jaden, who we saw previous episodes is really you know, have some Twitter patients when it comes to like public speaking, right makes him very nervous. One of his responsibilities as this best man figure is to deliver a big moving speech right at the end and toast the groom. And so he finally does it, and he delivers a speech about the man that Darren has actually become at the somebody who values service and earned leadership. And when his Darren's betrothed, Princess Kayro hears this, realizes his heart's really in the academy. She releases him from his marriage, vows and nulls everything, and lets him return to Earth. So that's the main plot there. But meanwhile other stuff is going on because Caleb and Genesis have decided to stay at the school during spring break, kind of a Hermione

20:29 Granger Harry Potter type deal, I would say, So they're staying on campus. Genesis is trying to alter her personnel file after being recommended for the pre command track by Chancellor Ake, which is like a real vote of confidence. Right, Oh, we're recommending you pre command. All of her aspirations are about to come true. So she convinces Caleb to help her sneak onto the bridge of the Athena. And now Caleb thinks they're just having a lot of fun being silly and rebellious and flirtatious, and what now Genesis is actually trying to use the access on the bridge to kind of delete her academy application letters of recommendation And why would one do that? What does she got to hide?

21:12 And comes to light that because she altered them to hide what they really said. If she's motivated by fear of not being good enough, because it's kind of been an expectation in her family. You know, her dad's in the admiral, right that she would have course the cream rises, you will be in commander like everyone else. So she's got all that angst about that. She really wants to keep that what she did to those records, you know, tampering with records kind of a big deal. So she wants to make sure that people do not find out about that fear that she has. And of course, if you do things like this, friends, I know it's shocking, but prepare yourself. There are consequences when you do things like that, right, and they're caught Amander jet Reno, who says, paraphrasing, you're in a world of shit, friends, I remember saying it.

22:03 Chancellor Ake is not happy, and so she punishes Genesis by removing her from consideration for the command track, and she sentences both her and Caleb to academic suspension and two hundred hours of menial labor. All right, So that's one plot ended up more favorable. One plot less. So again, where everyone's recovering from this big trauma in the events of the last episode, right where they lost one of their fellow cadets in the violence. So there's a lot of themes of healing from the trauma going on here. Caleb, in addition to hanging out with Genesis, is still struggling with his feelings for Trema. Sadal. She's out there on Beta's ed, recovering in a coma right, and he's having a very hard time sending a communication to her because he keeps writing these heartfelt missives and then deleting them.

22:57 He's having a very hard time expressing him much like Jaden has a hard time expressing himself as well. So finally, by the end of the episode, he finally works up the nerve to send her an honest message, admitting his vulnerability and how difficult it is for him to reach out and connect the themes of this episode that I think would be good for us to talk about themes of obligation, themes of friendship, and the choice between personal dreams and familial expectations, right arranged marriages, your parents pressuring you to go into a particular line of work, those kind of things there, duty versus individual choice and desire.

23:39 So that's kind of what we have for this particular episode here. I'm super curious to hear what our fans thought of this episode. Eric, do you have some choice quotes sliced up on your bread board for us? Well, luckily, Paul I do. In fact, Drew Nicholson gave it a nine It's a wonderful moment gathering breath after tragedy before plunging into what is likely to be three tightly knit episodes closing out the season. This episode deepens relationships, expands characterizations, and teaches us about leadership, expectations, and failure. Thanks Drew. Brian birch Told said seven point five for a light episode. It was definitely not as action packed as the last one, but we did get some great character development for Darrem and Genesis, two characters who haven't gotten much focus yet. It was interesting to see Genesis and Caleb both let their guards down around one another. Caleb, interestingly was more naturally open with Genesis than Terrema, who just brute forced her way unintentionally into Caleb's head, and it was fun to see that brief hint at the potential triangle between Caleb, Genesis, and Torema. 26:19 And Troy Shockley said it was fine. It was another character building episode and they're often not as strong, but you need world and character building to develop a new show. Give it a six point five nothing inherently wrong, entertaining, enough to watch, but not one you want to watch a second time. And that gives us a Amalgamated Fans score this week of seven point seven, which is actually our lowest for the season. Interestingly, still very respectable score, but the lowest for the season. Wow, what are you at all? So who wants to David? Would you like to jump in and go first? Maybe?

27:05 Yeah, sure, I'll jump in. So this particular episode I didn't really enjoy that much. I have to kind of agree a little bit with William Swartz there who said that it was kind of slow and boring. I kinda just I don't know something about this particular episode. It was just really dragged on to me for some reason, and it was kind of pointless to me in a way to a point where it was just like, so I know that there was like a lot of character development stuff, but it was just kind of pointless when they went through the whole wedding ceremony, because for one, they didn't really go through the whole ceremony. It was just like kind of giving through here and there, and I was like, wow, they got married already, because the next thing, all of a sudden, you see him kissing.

27:57 It was like okay, but yeah, to me, this episode didn't really get to take it from me, I I was kind of wanting to watch something else almost because it just felt really. Slow. Was really slow for me, That's all I could say. But other than that, Yeah, one of the some of the points I guess was they introduced a new alien species, the warped slug. I thought that was kind of interesting. And then uh, we know had like a big toe problem thing that was going on, and apparently she was talking to uh my gosh, what was that Giminar's name. Yes, And I just thought that was a little strange how she was panicking about like a dub toe something or whatever happened to her to I don't know that part would never really lane, but I guess that was supposed to be for last as heard, but it just felt a little out of character to me about why she was panicking like that show. I don't know. This episode just didn't really did it for me a show. I'm gonna probably give it a four point five.

29:18 All right, I believe that's the lowest score we've ever gotten on any score of Starfleet Academy to date from many of our minions. So, uh, all right, how about you, Charles, what do you think can you beat? Can you beat a four point five? David? I can be the four point five? But I agree with some of the fan posts that it was there was some character development. Yes, we did give some character development. We did find out a little bit about this one culture and their beliefs and having the royalty family and having the wedding and okay, yeah, Mom had a little bit of a scare. They think they want to retire, then they got to get a new king and queen.

30:14 Should be interesting where they have a group that's going to be led solely by a queen and not a king and queen. But that one I could see the story in there, But the story did kind of drag a little bit. I did like it where our best man did return and give a good speech that kind of promoted him to thinking, especially especially her, to where his focus really is. And he's got a more interest in Starfleet than he does dealing with the royal family and having to deal with the people of planet. I'm not sure. I'm not sure I'd want to go into a game of poisonous or not poisonous, sticking our hand toxic or non toxic, sticking my hand to a random jar.

31:22 It's like, okay, yeah, let's put in. It's like, okay, yeah, it's toxic. Okay, let's put some put a few drugs in our system to go prevent us from passing out and releasing this poor warp slug which was contained probably for a reason in the first place. I did like the visits of explaining where people were going. I liked the idea of each cadets and the chances they're talking about where they're going to go, visit what they're gonna do for their little spring break, I guess you'd call it.

32:09 So that was one seeing that and seeing them all come back and getting a look at the nice meteor shower that occurred. Uh, definitely, we learned a lot about our cadet and things she's hiding she does. We definitely have known to seeing her being a risk taker. Well this point she did take even more risk trying to get herself kicked out of the academy just to go in and try changing her records. And it'd been interesting to see what would have happened if they got ahold of her records to seeing what would happen with the interviews, so I could see the probation, poor little bit more probation and.

33:01 To what he already had already. But I'm going to go with this one. Definitely my lowest of the season so far. I think I like that one fans of a seven point five. Seven point five, So I guess we'll continue going in the direction that we're going and I'll jump in here next. So a batlift club. That's awesome. I want to know more about the batlift club since we only have one Clement who's teaching the batlift club. I'm really interested to know. But they do have a batwidth club because I saw the poster on the wall.

33:47 You know, you know who must be part of it, Uncle Jim. Das right, Ah, yes, absolutely, yes, she's probably responsible. So there was a blift club, and what could be better than that? Actually, actually, Eric han has touched my back lits. I got to pay it out there. Eric had touched it, Paul never touched it, David never touched it, and Charles never touched it. But Eric did, so Yeah, Eric touched it. In fact, I might even have pictures of Eric touching it taking around somewhere, So yeah, I want to know about the batlet. So that's one thing. Jaden, man, he there is that picture that he was going to bash the crap out of that dude with that big rock for abducting his friend. He was not a happy camper, which I think is awesome. Actually, yeah, look look how big he isn't imposing?

That was a great answer. So yeah, and I I agree with David. I thought that Jaden's speech was just was was was awesome and it said a lot about his character, his friendship with Ramie and Uh, it really was the canablys for the episode for her releasing him from his marriage. One thing, though, this is an awful trophy thing, because how don't we seen orange marriages on Star Trek on many other episodes like Deanna Troy and Uh and that dude there and Haven and then Spot into Onto Onto Pale. We've seen this before, so yeah, I.

35:50 Mean, I mean, I mean, sure we have Jim, But I guess if you look at science fiction as kind of a reflection of the real world and real cultures and real people, plenty of cultures on the planet practice that. So it's you know, it wouldn't be out of line to have more than one culture that shows arranged marriage as part of their base belief. And I'd just like to throw in gentlemen also if I could. It's like we'd say, Okay, we've seen that before, right, we've seen that before, right, But a lot of times we've seen that before. It maybe from like ten to fifteen years ago. There's a constant stream of new audience members coming up who are of different ages, and they it's new to them. They're going through their life at a much earlier spot than we are, and so it's important for them to know. It's like, maybe you know, some show from like fifteen twenty years ago, they're probably not going to have seen right with as much dogma as we've got. But it's like, you know, you're like nineteen and you're currently dealing with the whole idea of my mom and dad are pressuring me to marry this person because of you know, family tradition or whatever, it's gonna resonate to you. So maybe it's on something that's been done before, but it hasn't been done for the current audience before. And because you know, they shouldn't have to, you know, constantly be refreshed, right because they're just showing up on the scene. So I think it's important to keep that in mind if things seem repetitious, right, because can new generations coming up they need the same lessons.

37:24 Threw that And one thing I didn't understand is why aren't the cooneans Ionians. It's a great question, Jim, Like. Wouldn't they all be blue and scaly? Why would they be retaining their human his age if they're on their home planet. Well they talked about that, okay, so why they did They did talk about that. Yeah, I'm in a paraphrase. They're on like a right now. It's like where Kyonea is, right, Aren't they on like a moon for this ceremony? Yeah, they're on the stupid red moon. Yeah, and it used to be like an aquatic moon.

38:06 But then there there was like more, uh. They they said there was another planet that they normally are on it's like their current home world and that's where they normally reside. They come here for this particular that. But that doesn't explain why they wouldn't show up in their natural. Form because it's not a water environment. But why would they be in human form? I mean, that doesn't make any sense. I don't know, That's just that was That's just what they explained on the show. I mean they didn't address it. Well, they they addressed they addressed why the and actually David try it, you know, was mentioning like the how the wedding was small and whatever. Remember we didn't get to see the wedding. We saw the pre wedding because it was called well yeah, and the pre wedding was going to happen on the moon and the real wedding was going to happen on the planet and the really.

And now let's let's jump back to uh to Genesis. There she is and Caleb. I thought it was this was a great episode for developing their their friendship. And I don't I don't think that there's more than a friendship there. I think there that they are just very close friends. I don't I don't see a love triangle there, as one of our fans had mentioned, I don't. I don't see her in Tarima uh getting jiggy with it with Caleb.

39:38 I just don't see that. So, you know, I just think they're good friends. So there's that. I don't think that that that's there. Jet Reno stubbing her toe and talking with her her little space kit, and I found that humorous. She's like, well, I only have one toe and you have multiple toes, and she fixed her toe. She had to stay back hind and watched the reject at the academy. The work slug thing was interesting. We've never seen a warp slug, so that was fun. But Genesis changing her admission letters kind of cast some doubt on that character. I still like her. I still think that she definitely has that command style. I would follow her.

I think that's where they were going. Wasn't it Hawaii that he's he was going with Kyle? They were going to Abiza, the island of Abiza, which is Yeah, I think that is a small it was supposed to be a small island somewhere. I don't know if I don't think that's a real island.

So I would have loved to see Jaden, you know, catching an edge of doing some Hawaii five O serv right, so we know that Kyle and him are definitely I really like the way that scene ends where Jaden says You're still an asshole when he walks away and leaves leaves remis standing there. But yeah, this episode was a I think David was right. It's a lot slower, but like Paul said, we just came off of a of a really heavy episode where you know, they lost one cadet, Sam got fragged and their teacher got eaten alive and shot out the airlots. So that last episode was really heavy, heavy shit going on. So, you know, to come down from that with some light character development I think was definitely necessary after that, and the cadets are still dealing with that, with the you know, the drama of what happened, you know, the stress that they were under dealing with all that. So I didn't mind so much that they went in a lighter direction with this particular episode. I found it humorous to watch Holly Hunter try to pack

42:46 her bag and have Caleb had to sit on top of it to get it closed. I thought that was funny. But overall, yeah, I think I'll go to seven point five or my score on this episode. It wasn't the best, but I think it was necessary. So that's that's my score and I'm sticking to it, all right, Eric, how about you? We'll keep going right along, all right? Uh? Well, you know, this episode has some good and some bad. For me. Right upon the opening, we say that the setting that we're gonna have is the galactic meteor shower, and I hate to be like the person who's like, oh, science, whatever the fuck is a galactic media.

43:36 Nobody knows what a galactic meteor. This sounds like some kind of like a meteor shower is something that happens on a planet. Anyway, I just sort of set me off at first, but that was okay because then they had this story that they were going to tell me of spring break and sending everybody home, and immediately I started to think about, oh, yeah, this is gonna be like this is gonna be like Family from Next Generation where Picard goes home and he like you know, talks to his brother and you get like all this cool character development, or it's going to be like the episode of Enterprise where like Archer goes back to Earth and then you know, you find out that he's been involved with Erica Hernandez and you know, so I was like, Okay, this is great. We've got Caleb, he says he's going to stay with a host family, so we get to learn a little bit more about his host family. We've got Genesis who says that she's going to go and check out her family, and so we get to learn more about the Admiral and the mom and all this kind of stuff. We've got Sam who's glitching. She's going to go somewhere to get repaired, so we're gonna learn more about her. You've got Darren who's going home, so you're gonna learn more about him. And like, as the as I started to realize that I was not going to find out most of what I really wanted to find out in this episode, my interest just kind of started a plummet. So I started then to like watch this episode more critically. I couldn't help it now. I did watch it twice just to give it a fair shot.

45:03 The first time I watched it, I was like, Jesus Christ, what's going on? The second time I watched it, I found more more good things. So okay, So beginning the setup is great. Unfortunately most of it is unrequited. We only get information kind of about Dream and a little bit about Jaden and the whole Genesis, Like, we never get to meet her family, we never get to meet any Caleb host family, We never get to find out anything about Sam. I did like at the very beginning, during that first scene where Ake comes to Genesis and she offers her the command track thing, and Genesis says what she's like everything is yes, yes, yes, it's you know, she just like super enthusiastic about it, And that to me was a great moment where you get to really see her character not just being enthusiastic, I think for the sake of her family, but it really felt to me like she was enthusiastic about that. He really wants to achieve this thing, you know, for herself. Of course, it gets a little derailed during this episode, but I did like that moment. Okay, so then we move on.

46:10 We've got the scene with the packing the suitcase. I picked it apart against I was like this, like, this is exactly my suitcase in the thirty In a thousand years from now, they don't have like some kind of thing that is a better suitcase than this thing that you have to sit on and zip up and wheel away with a handle. So you know how some people say, like when somebody on the show says sane or they used colloquial language that is contemporary to the twenty first century, that pulls them out of the moment. That suitcase pulled me out of the moment. Man. I was like, there's got to be a better way to do packing in the thirty second century anyway. Okay, so then we still kind of like get into the two stories. We've got the Dremn story and we've got the Caleb and Genesis story on the story side. Here are some of my initial thoughts. I couldn't figure out why they put us on the moon, Like why didn't we just was it was?

47:10 That? What it was, Paul, So they didn't have to go to the planet to show us the real fish people because they have to be human people on the dry moon or something. You're muted. But yeah, it would have been a big effects dollar sign. Okay, they're doing what they can with their equivalent of like the volume and stuff, but it always looks like hell, right, and it always looks fake. Okay, you know I think is this you know, makeup and blue and digitization. I think they tried to say, how do we do a show that's really inexpensive after last week? Right? And I think we'll send everyone on break. We'll do that, and you know, they've only got to really use a half dozen actors and you know this crazy projected wedding thing with you know, right, except. One of the places that you're actually going is the home world of a like aquatic species, so we're not going to go there. We're not going Yeah, it's kind of.

48:01 A they kind of wrote themselves. Who knows what the first draft of the script was like, right, you know there's the stories, good, but no fish people, right, because there was just you know, you can just imagine, you know, the brain trust, the paramount with their ledges. So so let's let's put aside then the special effects and why they aren't actually on the planet and they're on some stupid moon, which probably all has to do with money. The entire season so far with Darream's character, he has been shown to be somebody who's beholden to the expectations of his family. And the one episode where we go to his home planet and we can potentially meet his family, we never meet his family. We never meet any of the dads, any of the mom's anything.

48:49 It was like the biggest letdown that I could possibly imagine for this character. It was it was really irresponsible writing as far as I was concerned, So not meeting Darream's parents and then kind of having this like half fake wedding and stuff, all the Jaden stuff. Like I thought his speech was great. I love the idea of him coming along and becoming the cosine kind of off the cuff. That's kind of a surprising thing, and that was a fun part of the show. But the way they just actually like put together the story of the wedding and stuff felt really really clunky to me, and I didn't like it very much. Okay, so story B. Then you got the Caleb in Genesis story once again. It's very convenient that they both end up back at Starflate.

49:30 Of course they have to for this story to happen, right, But Genesis once again like all season high achiever, the one chance we get to meet the admiral. Right, she's not actually gonna go home. We can't actually meet her dad. So it just really felt like a lost opportunity to me. Most of Caleb and Genesis's time together just felt like them goofing around and there wasn't like really too much happening. I don't mind the flirtatious stuff going on. I think that anybody who's in college is going to have those like flirtatious moments where it may or may not mean anything and it doesn't really even matter. Like I hope that there's never like a a what they call it a triangle moment or anything like that. I don't think the show really needs that, but it is normal for these kids to be like feeling things for each other when they're in an emotionally intimate moment with one another, So that part doesn't really bug me at all. I did like Genesis kind of like ultimate learning moment in the end, you know, after she betrays Caleb and kind of like, you know, the punishment she gets from Ak feels like she does learn something in the end, So I did like that. Finally, I just want to address kind of like the other sort of like romantic tension in the room, which is the Darren Jaden one, which I think a lot of people online are talking about.

50:54 In this episode, we get Darren giving Jaden his coat right because Jaden's cold, blah blah blah, they're talking. I just want to be clear, I am not feeling like a tension between those two. I think that it's just two people who are really like starting to grow close to one another for various reasons. There was the breathing thing before. Now there's like this, oh my gosh, we ended up in this really weird scenario together and we're kind of feeling it out to want to together. So it still feels very platonic to me, and that's the way that I read the scenario. So I was disappointed that it was only a pre wedding and not a real wedding. That's okay, Like I said, the Jaden speech was okay. So in the end, I think at the start of the episode they said something about all World's Day.

51:44 I still have no idea what that is or why it even mattered for this episode. It was literally nowhere else anywhere. Kyle shows up with a sunburn because apparently in the thirty second century they don't have sunblock anymore. So I don't know, just a lot of like little drop balls for me. That kind of made this one just a little bit less enjoyable. Decent character development, but like enough holes in it that I can't give it better than a six. I started with a five, and I kind of like, after the second time I watched it, I was like, no, I think it's a six. I'll give it a six because I did like it enough. I'll probably watch it at least one more time. It just didn't knock it out of the park at all for me, so Paul.

52:27 Yeah, Yeah, some interesting points that everybody made. Yeah, it was an interesting episode. I mean it's it's tough if you come in on the heels of a big action episode where there's a lot of big, dynamic plot elements, including character death, right, And this is like the slow meditative you know, exhalation between you know, the next series of events. So it kind of just suffers a little bit because of the structure of that. So, but I admire the under endings of the theme though I liked it. A lot of the focus was about like trying to find your own how do you charge you because everyone's juggling with this in this whole set of characters, Right, how do you juggle being true to yourself when the expectations of everyone else has for you, including your peers, your parents. I mean, probably nobody has got a tougher road to hoe with that than Jaden, really, I would say, right, because he's really swimming upstream against you know, the larger forces of klingon society and expectations and gender and all those things. Right, So I find it interesting that they're addressing those things thematically, and I think this episode looks a little bit better when you've seen the subsequent episode next week that I'm super excited to talk about. We're a week behind or so in terms of our reviews because of guests, so I'm really excited to talk about next week's episode when we convene again in here next week.

54:01 But I think that, you know, I like to fit them together, and I think that this one kind of compliments where we're going in a good way. I still think that I I like the wedding itself the least of this whole episode, right. I do think it was kind of like, you know, okay, let's get those projected special effects and make it look like we have a huge thing. And these costumes were, you know, kind of they felt instantly assembled. And I felt like the writing seemed like it was like either a first draft script that didn't go through enough subsequent drafts, right, or it was a draft that had been at some point trying to do something bigger and it really got cut to the ribbons because of budgetary constraints. I don't know which of those two situations it was.

54:47 I mean, it seems they had to write to match the budget, because why else would you put something on a weird moon that looks exactly like Vulcan from Strange New Worlds. Why you know, why else would you not like make the Coyonians blue. I mean, there's so many other creative ways I could have done that. Money was a problem, right that basically, like they could all be know, the princess's betrothed to, you know, and the two guys. They could all be trapped on a shuttle craft together going back to the home world. Right, that costs nothing. You just put them in a shuttle and they have a bunch of dialogue scenes, all right. But to have this you know, kind of nonsensical faux effects thing that they do a lot on the Star Trek shows, right, with a big projected volume type effects, and it's it's it's it's tarting to look pretty transparent to me. So but I still I love this cast. I think it's a really engaging cast. I like all these actors, I like all these characters, so there's a lot for me to like. I am trying really hard these days to like things more than not like them, if I can. I think it's necessary in these times. So I think I'm going to land with a solid seven for this episode. I was tempted to go a little higher, but I want to save myself for next week because I was quite fond of the subsequent episode that we had there. So let's call it a seven and uh and leave it at that, and we'll see what we have. Tonight is bizarrely, tonight is the penultimate episode of this season. That blows my mind.

And for any you know, sci fi fans who have read any authors of color, sci fi authors of color, surely you've read Octavia Butler, and she's got this novel called Kindred, which it just really reminded me of because of course, seeing Kindred, there's a young black woman who's living in nineteen seventy six California, and on her twenty sixth birthday, she gets transported back to plantation life in the eighteen like tens, and so there's this kind of like paradigm shift of oh my gosh, I have this one way of living, and now I have to live I have

Phanom has also announced upgrades to its shipping and distribution in the United States. That's an attention given. Therefore, subscribers in that region can expect better distribution times. May I translate that sentence for you? Allow me to basically that means that shipping and distribution in the United States has gotten a lot of complaints from many people. And this is the company desperately trying to write the ship see what I did there, so that it's not like the United States is some little region. We have a lot of We tend to spend a lot of money on crap, so we're perfect for something like this, right. The USS Athena, which is a badass and cool looking design. I love the Athena, a variant version of the Freedom Class version of the USS Cerritos, which I think a lot of people are going to want. From Strange New Worlds, There's going to be the Enterprise's Galleo Shuttle, which is a cool looking model. There there will be also a USS Cerritos XL size with the whole remove like walking around it's underwear. I don't know what that looks like, but we'll find out. From Star Trek Prodigy the Nova Flyer, which is cool. The USS Adventure twenty one. I do not know where that is from, so that that is curious because there's no parentheses to educate me. The gord Hunter, which I suspect is from Strange New Worlds just a hunch.

Got some hef to them. You could bludgeons to death. Of the Voyager it's so heavy. The front hall is like this monster. It's always top heavy, falls off the shelf. It's crazy designs. What's wrong with the lack of sleep? The xls are about eleven inches or so long. Fan Home is work with production teams in the Star Trek Archive and brand management team at Paramount, which is responsible for shoring high accuracy. The designs are all based on the original visual effects models that we used to produce the shows. Wiseman reprises her Discovery role as Sylvia Tilley in Starfleet Academy and we'll be talking about that episode real soon, and she has had this to say about the cruel criticism aimed at the new streaming series. It is a really difficult thing to be confronted with an online presence of anonymous individuals who can work out some of whatever is going on in their own lives, being age or you know, self loathing, and then put that onto you. It's shocking. It's like you always want the power of invisibility so you can see how the world feels about you. This kind of situation is like getting that power. Wiseman, who returned his Lieutenant Tilly in Starfleet Academy's eighth episode, The Life of the Stars, which we'll be reviewing next week. Fans, continued by saying, you see the worst things people could say about you and the kindest things people could say about you, and that's how you find out you don't want the power of visibility. Actually, so it's really jarring when it first happens. But I hate that anybody else has to go through that, especially young people, especially anybody just starting out.

So it's just kind of like we welcome everybody in Star Trek, right, we really do as our lovely guest on Monday's special show said, Star Trek is forever. If you're in that show, you're in it forever.

I mean, let them watch it and let them experience it without being torn down and you know, uh, you know, be told this is not Star Trek. You know, Gene Roddenberry swimming over in his grave all this other bs. Well, let these new fans, Let these these young fans make their own mind. Let them watch Star Trek, Let them decide if they want to go back and watch the Space Nine or Voyage or the best Star Trek movie ever made, the Star Trek here. Let but basically, let let them experience it themselves, Let them explore it and

It is a scary time to go through for anybody right now that we're living in so but I just I find that it shows like Starfleet Academy, I want them to succeed badly because I think we need it. Right, I think that young people coming up right now need it more than they probably are afraid to say so. To fans out there, feel like they want to like poke fun that actresses like Mary Wiseman, or make fun of people for their appearance or whatever it may be, or if it's like that's not how it was done back when I was pumping gas in nineteen sixty nine. I mean, you know, maybe just consider

And you know, if you look at Starfleet Academy, because that's what we're talking about, you know, here's this group of kids that got together. They weren't friends in the beginning. But we have a very wide, diverse collection of students, and we've had the opportunity to watch them grow, watch them develop, watch them build friendships that will be long lasting and overcome their differences whether they're Klingons or Coyoneans or you know, princes whatever, and they become friends.

Yeah, yeah, I just you got to see the forest for the trees, man, It's not It's not a world of vitriol out there.

But you know, if you have a legitimate right, but you don't like it, you've give an episode of four or two or zero because of this and this and this, you're welcome to that that that's fine. And all of the comments that we read on the show, and all the comments that are in our section, in our comments section on our Facebook page are legitimate from fans. There's no ay on there's nothing there that these are legitimate fans. And I think it's kind of fans that we attract to our page because that's the environment that we want to foster on Trek Talking. Everybody's welcome here. It's a Star Trek family, and that's the type of fans that we attract, and that is why you don't see so many of the negative comments and the hate in our section because those aren't the fans that are attracted to our page. So I hear a lot what you guys are saying, and I do agree a lot of the things that have to do along with like, people have their own unique abilities, their own unique everything, and everybody's different. Everybody has their own likes dislikes, and a lot of it is based off of opinions. But from what I've noticed in shows looking back on even like the Andy Griffiths Show, for instance, right so old shows, black and white movies, anything that seems to be longer than a certain amount of time seems to lose a lot of what's the word I had in my head canon, if you will, continuity.

1:50:56 Continuity seems to start to anticipate the long a series starts to go, and over time it just starts to you know, because we're getting new writers, we get new directors, we get everything that's coming through. People want to put in their own work into a show. This is Kochman track. This is what he wanted to make, you know, trying to stay with continuity as much as possible, of course, and look at TNG compared to GOS, there was just a lot of different a whole lot of different variety between the two. So to me, looking back over all these different types of shows that lasted a very long time, and Star Wars is starting to see that right now.

1:51:45 There's a lot of angry fans in Star Wars just as of right now, because people are just kind of like, I don't like that, you know, or they did it wrong because it's not part of continuity or canon or whatever you want to call it. But to me, Star Trek myself, well, if I grew up watching Star Treks, when I first started watching The Next Generation, and I told Eric this, I've told I believe Charles and Uncle Jim if they were there, but I think, Paul, this is going to be coming to you for the first time. So as I grew up, Star Trek to me was really important because I suffered trying to find out my identity. I had trouble trying to find out who I was. I had a lot of dreams that apparently never came true because of my current condition. And as I was trying to explore myself, Star Trek came on and I was like, Wow, this character really inspired me and empowered me well to the point where I was just like, Okay, yeah, Star Trek is full of hope, is full of the future and whatnot, and it's just going to be what we all hope that it will become. And to me, Star Trek, when I was watching it, it was just like more and more things started popping up here and there that was just constantly trying to tell me about who I was and what I could achieve as follows my limited condition, a limited of my condition could achieve,

I really was struggling a lot growing up, and so finally watching Star Trek kind of opened my eyes to a lot of the future, of hope and dreams of what I could have achieved because I really wanted to be an accident when I grew up. I'm not gonna I wanted to go step on the moon and I just wanted to go to different planets, and to me, I can't do that now because of my condition and apparently you have to be very super healthy to get up the space and all that stuff. But hopefully in time technology you know, my help. But overall though Star Trek, to me, I loved Star Trek. It's one of my favorite franchises out there, and it's sad to see people bad talking about it. And yes, I agree with that.

I do have conversation with a few of my high school friends who do have sometimes some negativity towards some of the shows, including Academy. That's also the fact that they've.

Tostn G all of the Legacy series, and I think a lot of them that's that's their comfort that's their comfort level is the old legacies and so when the new series are coming out, it's out of their comfort zone, and so they're not as crazy about seeing what the changes are occurring. I, for one, sit there and say, Okay, I'm gonna go outside my comfort zone and I want to see what changes they're gonna make and why I am enjoying seeing Starfleet Academy.
